STEM Printables - STEM Building Challenge and STEM Scavenger Hunt

Making learning fun is always a goal for parents and teachers alike. You want your kids to be entertained, but nothing’s wrong when there’s a little education going on at the same time. It helps make the most of playtime. There are many STEM toys out there that are great at helping foster skills and learning concepts while also being fun for kids.

Speaking of STEM, however, your kids can have fun without buying special toys. There are many building materials you can use that are found in your own home! Things like:

  • LEGOs (okay, this is a special toy, but most already have these painful blocks at home!)
  • Q-Tips
  • Aluminum foil
  • Toothpicks
  • Paper plates
  • Straws
  • String
  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Plastic wrap
  • Pencils

It’s amazing what you can build with when you get a little creative!

STEM Challenges for Kids

We have put together a fun printable STEM Challenges pack for kids. We hope your kids enjoy building these different items using household materials. There’s also a fun STEM scavenger hunt included!

Once you print these fun STEM worksheets, you will see a number of fun activities. Clip the cards for more handheld fun or leave the paper as is. We recommend you print on cardstock paper so the challenge cards or sheets stand up to long-term use.

You’ll see the supplies list within the STEM Challenge cards. Your kids can refer to this each time they go to make something new.

Examples of building STEM Challenges for Kids that are included:

  • Catapult
  • Robot
  • Tall Tower
  • Marble Maze
  • Straw Rocket
  • Hexagon

You can always add to the challenges by coming up with more things for your kids to build and create!

STEM Scavenger Hunt

STEM Challenges classroom Scavenger Hunt for Kids Printables PDF

Give your kids a break at building by taking them on a scavenger hunt in the classroom! This classroom scavenger hunt printable offers a list of STEM-related items that your kids can find at home or when out. Print the hunt again and again each time you go somewhere new!

When doing the scavenger hunt, your kids will have to find things like something…

  • With wheels
  • That needs a battery
  • That cools items
  • Reflective
  • Symmetrical
  • Asymmetrical
  • That can dissolve in water

All of the items in the scavenger hunt uses one of the fields of STEM, so they will be learning why they are searching.

How do you do a scavenger hunt in the classroom?

This scavenger hunt checklist is the perfect classroom activity. Keep it within the four walls or extend it around the school or even outside to the playground.  It extends the lesson into something fun and engaging which totally equates memorable.  Imagine that light bulb moment that will go off when taking a science assessment but connecting the test question to the science classroom activity.

Another way to extend the science lesson, once they do this stem scavenger hunt at school, have them make their own scavenger hunt activity. Use this science lesson (or any lesson that is similar) and let the kids go to down making their own scavenger hunts for classmates. I bet they get very creative and competitive! You can even use this on another subject – how about a DIY math scavenger hunt?

For team building, pair up kids in tables or teams and let them take the classroom treasure hunt checklist their peers made. Do you have science buddies? If you are apart of an upper grade, pair students. Older students can be paired with kids from lower elementary classrooms. There is a lot learned in teaching a younger peer. Let them guide their science buddy through this simple scavenger hunt and science activity.

This can be the perfect activity for online learning too. For distance learning or virtual activities using the computer (even if at school), this can be a series of images they find on the web similar to a photo scavenger hunt only collecting images and adding them to their Google classroom photo library/folders.

What makes the best teen birthday ever? Plan an epic photo scavenger hunt that will never be forgotten! Print this photo scavenger hunt for teens for a fun mall, city, Target, Walmart or public location treasure hunt. This makes an awesome ice breaker for team building, youth groups. or just a teen party!

Photo Scavenger Hunt for Teens Printable

Nothing stumps me more than trying to create an activity my teens will actually enjoy. If you have one you know teenagers seem impossible to plan for, especially when it comes to someting that might involve their friends and reputation. In an effort to solve my own dilemma, I have found a low-cost easy solution. If you want to put together an easy teen party which evokes a lot of fun, this unique scavenger hunt is your answer!

When it’s time to plan an entertaining activity for teenagers, a photo scavenger hunt for teens is a great idea to break the ice and get the party started. With a little creativity, you can tailor the hunt to any theme or location. In addition, this isolates your teens to one location and fills a lot of the party time. Once you say “go” you will find yourself mostly hands off and enjoying watching the fun. Since they all will be eager to win, they will be running back and forth to you for treasure hunt reports.

Get ready to sit back and enjoy the fun. Here are all the tips and ideas you need to help you plan the perfect photo scavenger hunt for your teen party (or even youth group and team building events!)

Teen Party Invitations

When it comes to planning a birthday party for teens, snail mail is a thing of the past. You might find your child using a text chain to get the word out for their party but if you want something special, digital teen party invitations are a better way to go. They can be sent via text message or email.

There are a few places you can get digital teen party invites that are sent electronically.

  • Evite
  • Etsy
  • Minted
  • Zazzle
  • Paperless Post
  • Punchbowl

Guest List

Since this is a team scavenger hunt, you will want a good amount of kiddos on your birthday party guest list. Plan to have at least 4 to 10 kids on a team to execute this photo treasure hunt. I personally think, the more the merrier but you do want to be able to control your party guests in a public location.

Planning the teen guest list is rather important. Consider you guest list as your location is going to be in a public setting. Do you know the child, do you trust the child? These are all good questions to ask yourself before your send out the teen party invites.

Consider adding a few adults to the guest list that way you have power in numbers of controlling the wild teens.

Scavenger Hunt Location

The first step is to pick a location that you want the hunt to take place in. This can be anything from a local park to a shopping mall. Popular places to host a tween scavenger hunt include Target, the mall, an outdoor shopping center or Walmart. You could even take a photography scavenger hunt to an amusement park.

Consider how crowded the area is. how much can you control the space. Are the busy highways or roads, is security available, etc. You will be the adult in charge, so the location is very important.

Once you have the location, you need to come up with a list of items that the tweens and teens will need to find during the hunt.

Checklist of Scavenger Hunt Items

Next, come up with a list of items for the scavenger hunt. The items should reflect interests, popular themes and trends among teenagers.

photo scavenger hunt checklist

Some ideas for items to include on the scavenger hunt list are:

  • A picture of the entire team with a sales associate
  • A picture of a group member wearing a funny hat
  • A picture of a item that you can’t live without
  • A picture of something that starts with each letter of your teen’s name
  • A group selfie with all participants
  • A shot of a team member doing a silly pose
  • Find a celebrity look-alike and take a picture with them
  • Go to a famous landmarks and take selfies in front of it

These are just a few suggestions of items that would be perfect for a picture scavenger hunt for teens. Don’t be afraid to get silly- that’s the whole point of a photograph scavenger hunt.

Customize the list of photo scavenger hunt ideas for your group and the kids are sure to have a blast!

Photo Scavenger Hunt Checklist for Teens and Youth

Whatever you do, don’t stress. This is a fun and crazy game meant to lighten the mood at any party. To help you put the fun back in your party plan, we’ve put together a printable scavenger hunt list that will help you if you’re feeling stuck or you’re short on time.

This checklist is meant to be generic for any location. However, go through it. If you find there is a scavenger hunt clues/items that does not fit your chosen location, have the kids cross it off before the treasure hunt begins.

How to Play

Begin the scavenger hunt birthday party with a starting location. This can be the food court of your public setting. It gives parents a place for drop off and pickup. It also creates a meeting and emergency spot as needed during the treasure hunt. Your food court typically has bathrooms and and it will provide you seating to talk through the game instructions.

Once you have a photo scavenger hunt list of items, it’s time to start the adventure! Go over the scavenger hunt rules and give each team a list of things they need to find and take photos of. Make sure the teams fill in their start time before they head out to search for items.

On the start of go, teams will be set free in the wild like a bunch of animals. As they find items they will take a photograph (using their smartphones or cameras) and place a checkmark by the item on their fun photo scavenger hunt list of ideas. There is no order to the clues, they can find their next clue in any order.

Plan a meeting place for everyone to check in and set a time limit for the hunt. Anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours is usually plenty of time to complete the hunt. When it’s time to check in, have each team present their photos to mom and the fellow group members on the other team.

Finally, scoring. Victory is only declared when you have winners. The teammates that finish first, with all the items correctly, win. If no one finishes before times up, the team with the most points (or items completed on their checklist) wins the scavenger hunt! Deduct points for every minute the team goes over the timer.

For a variation, you can make this a photo challenge too. Take a look at the pics and vote for winners based best photos.

If you need prizes for a teenage scavenger hunt, consider $5 gift cards to perhaps a few of the stores in the mall. Other fun scavenger hunt teen game prizes can be giant candy bars, cash, small trophies, food, iTunes gift cards or even fidget toys.

Pro Tip: Run through the scavenger hunt yourself the day before. If something is not available, tell the kids to go ahead and scratch off the freebie. This will also give you an estimate of the time needed for the scavenger hunt at this location.

The point of mall scavenger hunts is to have fun, so the photos don’t have to be perfect. Just make sure everyone gets involved and has a good time.

Once everyone is done, head to the food court to sing happy birthday and enjoy some cake, cupcakes or even cookies!

Ready to celebrate mom? Offer mom a cute card filled with adorable hand and footprint art. This mother’s day gift is perfect for toddler and preschool age children. Simply paint their thumb, foot and handprint and lay it down on the card. It’s the mother’s day gift that remains frozen in time.

how to make diy printables for mothers day handprint craft kit

What do you do for the mother that has everything? I struggle with this every year. While flowers are always the go to, they are a temporary gift. If you are looking for a perfect mother’s day gift that is frozen in time, handprint art is a perfect idea. Mother’s day handprint crafts can be made at home or even in the classroom. In fact, we all can agree a baby handprint and toddler handprint are the most precious thing of all.

So let’s get started. Learn the best paint for making handprint art and then download and enjoy these adorable handprint mother’s day printable cards.

What kind of paint do you use for handprint art?

When making handprint art for mother’s day, it’s important to have the right paint. Especially if you want your product to last a long time. First you must answer the question, what medium is the handprint art going on. Once you have determined if you are using wood, paper, or canvas, you can then determine the paint source. You also want to use a non-toxic, organic paint as you are applying it to your child’s hand.

best paint for handprint art

The following paints can be used on the following sources…

Paper or Cardstock: A non-toxic washable tempera paint will easily stick to paper.

Canvas: Acrylic paint labelled non-toxic is safe to use.

Wood: Milk paint is made of natural ingredients making it the safest choice.

Drywall: Choose a non-toxic interior paint commonly found at Home Depot, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams.

It is important to wash hands (feet/fingers) immediately after the print is created.

Is there a trick to getting handprint art smudge-free?

Getting the perfect handprint can be a challenge. A few tricks to help a smaller child create a handprint without smudging. Follow these five tips when creating kids’ handprint art for mom.

Tip 1: Have the right paint. When using paper, the best paint for easy clean-up is a non-toxic washable tempera paint.

Tip 2: Use distraction. If you can get an adult or older kids to help you, distract the child while you go through the motions of painting their hand and applying it to the paper. If you do not have as second helper, use an electronic or television to quickly deter their eyes.

Tip 3: Give the handprint artwork a few test runs. Print out extra copies of the mother’s day cards and practice with your little hands.

Tip 4: Use a paintbrush to evenly paint on hand and footprints. Remove excess paint before applying the child’s hand to the printable or canvas.

Tip 5: Lay down the hand very slowly and carefully. Start with laying down the pinky and slowly rolling the hand down on the paper until you hit the thumb. Once all the fingers and palm are placed, press your finger tips above the child’s handprint to ensure no part of the child’s hand is not applied to the paper. When you are ready to lift the handprint off, do this in a reverse motion. Slowly peeling the paper back from the child’s hand.

Give yourself grace. Sometimes the most adorable children’s hand prints artwork is found is in the mistakes. Then years down the road, small smudge might remind the gift receiver of a once-upon-a-time wiggly toddler.

restaurant pretend play

I remember when I was little, and I was always creating fun scenes and jobs in my head. One of the creative games that I played over and over again was that I was working at the grocery store! There’s just something so fun about pretending to scan items and help out the customers, and this is what stemmed the idea to make these super fun kids play restaurant printables.

These pretend play restaurant ideas are easy to print, which means that the kids can start creating their own restaurant area in the house (or outside!) right away. This fun and interactive game would also be great for a sleepover or a super cute addition to any playroom as well.

What are fun ways to use these pretend play restaurant printables?

This is where the fun starts! Once everything is printed off, your little one can create their own restaurant as they see fit. You get to be the customer and choose food items from the printable menu and wait for your play food to arrive! The restaurant menu promotes literacy as each item not only has visual representation but is spelled out too.

If you have a cute play kitchen or a table that you can pair up with these dramtic play printables, that just adds to the ambiance and fun.

Restaurant pretend play table printable set

After the meal is served, your child will create the guest check for you to pay for everything you’ve eaten. Use this kit as a time to work on math while counting out the correct amount of money – and just a great way to open up the lines of communication.

You can even add your own silverware and dishes and lay on top of the provided table setting. If you have a play kitchen with plastic food, incorporate some of those 3-D food and restaurant items too. The great thing about creative and pretend play is that there are opportunities for learning fun throughout the whole time!

Toddler/Preschoolers: Early learners will love being able to find their independence in running their own restaurant. This can help them build confidence and learn how to be a big helper, too! Let the creativity go wild. Use for at home pretend play or laminate and use in a preschool classroom set up for a dramatic play center. Add a Melissa & Doug waiter or waitress costume  with apron or chef’s hat.

Older kids: Even though these restaurant printable pretend play items are geared toward younger kids, this is where the older kids can have fun being “served” and ordering! Have them sit at the table and see what type of treats and food that they’ll get from their younger siblings. You never know what hilariousness will ensure!

Adults: Interactive play is the best type of play. Sit down and enjoy this time with your little ones. They’ll love that they have your full attention, and you’ll love seeing them take charge and play! This is also excellent for preschool teachers when setting up a classroom. Adults can use this as play prep before going on an adventure to a real restaurant setting.

Tips for Printing These Free Printable Restaurant Ideas

Fun Family Bonding Activities checklist

Family time is important for everyone in the family. Planning relationship building activities make for fun memories that you’ll cherish for years. This family bonding activities printable provides year-round ideas of fun things to do together to make great memories together.

Why Family Time?

Whether it’s the bonding time spent with siblings, parents, children or even pets; spending time with family can provide a sense of security and love that cannot be found outside of the people you love the most. In addition, memories are created when something unusual occurs. That means getting out of the same daily routine and adding a new activity to your day!

Fun family activities can overlap with Family Traditions and they can be repeated or you can do them once and never do them again. For example, every Sunday family dinner is breakfast for us. This began as a family activity and quickly grew into a family tradition.

When creating a list of seasonal family activities, consider what your family would enjoy. If you have a larger family (like my family of seven) we have activities on the list that each child/adult would like. Of course, not each activity is appreciated by everyone but we all participate.

Family Bonding Ideas

We all know we should spend more time with our families but sometimes we struggle to come up with activities that don’t end in a shouting match. Making time to build your family bond can often be pushed aside. With that being said, here are some simple family bonding activities that you can do with your family this weekend!

1. Indoor Ice Skating: This fun activity for families on a budget is great for any time of year. Lace up and have fun trying to stay upright or learning how to do new tricks. If you don’t have ice skates, try out skates or even roller blades!

2. Cook Together: Cooking with kids can sometimes be difficult because they always want to play with the food but not eat any of it. Pick a recipe that everyone will enjoy and prep together if possible. Bonus points for trying new foods.

3. DIY Crafts: When was the last time you went to your local craft store? Take advantage of great deals and create something together. Your family will love the memories you create together while coming up with new ideas for future projects.

4. Mini-Golfing: It’s never too late or too early to start playing the game everyone loves. Mini-golf is a great family bonding activity that will leave you with laughs and smiles for years to come.

5. Go For A Hike: It doesn’t matter where you go for your hike as long as it’s somewhere new, exciting and challenging. Pack some snacks, water and good hiking shoes and get out of the house. Bonus: Involve your dog and make it a family adventure!

6. Board Games: Get some old school board games like Monopoly, Pictionary, Life or even Chess and challenge each other to friendly battles of minds. As long as everyone remembers that it’s just a game, you’ll have fun while making memories with a family game night.

7. Family Movie Night: One of the cheapest ways to have fun with the family is to spend a few hours at home watching a movie. Pick a movie everyone will enjoy and get some popcorn too! If your brave, make it a backyard movie night.

8. Yard Games: Whether you call them yard games or lawn games, playing sports in your backyard can be a ton of fun for the whole family. Bring out the badminton set or play a game of football to get some fresh air and burn off some energy.

9. Go on a Scavenger Hunt: We have a huge list of scavenger hunt ideas for at home. From outdoor hunts in the neighborhood, to birthday treasure hunts, and finally seasonal hunts with fun rhyming riddle clues, these hunt are great idea for each new holiday. This might quickly become a family tradition.

10. Family Road Trip: Road trips are a great way to create conversation and get to know one another. Play car games, learn a new skill aka map reading, and discover new places.

11. Family Vacation Stay-cation: When a trip out of town in not in the books, stay in town. A staycation is a great way to get to know your city and down.

12. Forts: Take a rainy day and build indoor forts. Using pillows, blankets and your furniture, all activities for the day must be conducted in the family tent. Laughter definitely included!

13. Volunteer: What feels better, to give or to receive? Teach your child the important as well as the benefit of serving in their community, church, school or another organization.

14. Look at Family Photos: So many memories and moments are caught in photographs. In the era of digital photography, it’s not often your child holds a photo in their hands. Look through older photos and tell a story about each.

15. Use Conversation Cards: Include engaging conversation during the evening dinner. Conversation cards are a great way to engage one another and learn about one another deeply.

These ideas are just a few examples. You can add your own to the list or start with a clean late full of family fun that fits your crew.
