fun games to play outdoors at night

No matter the kids’ age (or adults!), everyone can agree that playing outside in the dark is fun. This is especially true if you’re with a bunch of your friends or family members and letting that competitive spirit take over.

There is something mysterious about entering a dark backyard or park. What will you find? How will you use your 5 senses with limited availability of sight? I you are ready to take on a nighttime challenge, you will enjoy these fun outdoor games for the night.

If you are hosting outdoor party games, it’s also important to note that while night games are fun, don’t forget that safety does need to be considered. All of these games are fun to play outside in Mother Nature, but be sure to have flashlights and bug spray and be in an area without cars or traffic to stress out about.

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that motherly advice off my mind, let’s get back to the topic at hand – night games to play outside with friends!

We’ve played these games at sleepovers and family reunions, and they’re a huge hit!

What ages are nighttime games appropriate?

This is really up to your and your comfort level who can play nighttime games. Since most of these scary games to play outside at night include kids using flashlights, you can rest easy that they won’t get spooked from feeling alone in the dark. In addition, these games are playful and silly. Plenty of laughter will scare away the bad guys.

These games do have a series of directions, so they are best for older kids, teens, or adults. However, younger kiddos can easily pair up with older children to give them that sense of belonging and calm.

Lastly, most of these games are best after the sun goes down, so these yard games are best for kids who are still awake after dark.

What games can you play at night outside?

printable nighttime games for outdoors

Want a sneak peek? Take a look at these fun games included in the printable outdoor games.

Lawn Twister

You just need some neon paint and the ability to make a circle to get the kids twisting the night away. You can use the Twister board from the board game or just have a caller who calls out various commands. If you’re willing to get a bet messy, add a bit of colored shaving foam.

Steal the Bacon

This game does require teamwork and fast feet! Similar to capture the flag only with a faster pace. At the start of each round, a number is called, and the numbered players from each team run for the object and try to get it back to their side for one point. Who will be the sneakiest team to steal the bacon? Only time will tell!

Flashlight Tag

It’s like a regular tag, but with flashlights! Instead of tagging, you use a light to tag players. Having plenty of space to hide makes this the perfect game. Other players can untag you by crawling between your legs. Once everyone is tagged, “it” wins the game, and the game restarts. A perfect activity for the kids to run out of that energy before the midnight hour hits.

Glow Hunt

Grab those leftover Easter eggs and have a hunt in the yard! This is really fun if your Easter Eggs glow. If not, you can fill them with a battery-operated tea light. In addition, fill them with some goodies for extra fun! See if you can have a golden egg for a really serious prize. This egg might not light up.

3 Flies Up

You will need a glow-in-the-dark ball and the ability to have someone toss the ball and someone else catch it. In this game, you want to catch the ball three times to win the round. Try not to run over your friends and teammates.

Flashlight Sardines

This fun game is like hide-and-seek, but the opposite! Plenty of seekers and only one “hider.” Once a seeker finds a player hiding, they hide with the hider until there is one seeker left. The last person then becomes the first person to hide in the next game.

Shoe Pandemonium

You might remember this fun group game from youth group days. Get everyone to take off one of their shoes and throw them all into a pile. Then, see who can get their shoe first, all in the dark!

Glow-in-the-Dark Ring Toss

Using upcycled 2-liter soda bottles, grab those glow-in-the-dark rings and see who can land it on the target. Similar to cornhole, this is a fun backyard game for the nighttime.

SPUD

Grab a ball, toss it in the air, scream out someone’s name, and then watch that person frantically try to catch it. Spell SPUD and lose the game.

Fireflies

This is a super fun game that combines tag and hide-and-seek. Only the person hiding cannot stay in one place. This is great for a campsite or backyard woods. Choose a new firefly each round.

Gloweyball

Insert glow sticks into beach balls in this fun glow-in-the-dark game. It’s like a game of glow stick volleyball with a glow-in-the-dark beach ball. Split players into two teams who can be identified by their different colored glow stick bracelets. So much fun to watch and even more fun to play!

Flashlight Scavenger Hunt

Grab your flashlights and go! This outdoor scavenger hunt game can be used alone or with all the other night games. Don’t worry. As a bonus, you’ll even get the printed scavenger hunts included in this download!

Ghost in the Graveyard

This is the scariest game and likely only an outdoor scary game because of the name. In fact, you might have played this game back when you were younger. It’s like freeze tag meets hide-and-seek, with a bit of screaming involved. Watch the ghost population grows as this game continues to be played.

Potato Drop

Putting potatoes in between your knees and running is the name of this relay race game. You drop the potato, and you have to start all over again at the start line. Twist up the game with a little bit of red light, green light action.

Kick the Can (Glow-in-the-Dark Style)

Talk about a throwback game with a fun glow-in-the-dark spin! This is your typical summer camp game. The first person is “it” and counts to 50 while the others hide. It tries to find hidden players. When they see someone they say their name and where they are (I see Owen in the bush!) Depending on who kicks the can, the player can release prisoners in jail. However, if all the players are in jail, “It” wins and you can start a new game.

Marshmallow Pong

It’s like beer pong but kid-friendly. The kids will bounce the marshmallows into the cup and then eat that marshmallow once it’s inside. It sounds like everyone wins in this fun plastic cup game.

Night Statues

Freeze tag meets sneakiness meets fun. Choose one person as the museum curator. Give them a flashlight. Everyone else is a statue. If a statue is caught moving by the curator, they go back to the starting line. The first person to tag the curator wins.

Supplies

The best part about using these outdoor game printables is that you just need a few simple supplies to start! (you will need to also have a few glow-in-the-dark rings, beach balls, potatoes, a flashlight, and paint – for some of the games)

  • Paper
  • Printer
  • Outdoor Night Games Download

You can easily start with one and then get the rest as the year goes along. I recommend printing on cardstock and then laminating the printable game. This makes it easier to use over and over again!

How many players are needed for these games?

These games are meant to be enjoyed by a group of people. The more that can join in, the better! Some can be just 2-3 players, but the others are fun to have more people making it more chaotic fun.

funny adult scavenger hunt printables

Who says adults can’t have fun too? Having organized adult activities can create an instant connection. Adult games can be used at ice breakers, team-building activities, birthday party entertainment, and “just because” memories. One type of adult game that can easily become pulled together is a scavenger hunt.

Scavenger hunts are a came full of clues or a list of items that can be quickly collected. These items can be collected in an order using rhyming riddles and clue cards. The collected items don’t have to be picked up and alternatively, they can be photographed as photographic evidence. Lastly, they can be collected as physical objects. Scavenger hunts can be a race against the clock or against another team. They require a competitive spirit, problem-solving skills, and a bit of humor.

The benefits of scavenger hunts are the way they bring people together and improve relationships. The size of the group doesn’t necessarily matter. A bit of friendly competitive spirit can be found between a couple or between an entire team.  Scavenger hunts stimulate the brain and boost one’s mood. They create instant connection and a feeling of accomplishment.

Pull out that inner child and take a look at these creative adult treasure hunts. These adult scavenger hunt ideas include both virtual and in-person ideas.

How do you make an interesting scavenger hunt for adults?

When you are ready to hold a scavenger hunt for adults, you want to ensure it’s engaging and enjoyable. A few scavenger hunts require setup. Many scavenger hunts can be printed and instantly played. Before planning an adult scavenger hunt, consider your audience, your players, and the environment where you want the treasure hunt to take place.

how to plan a fun adult scavenger hunt

To guide you on creating an interesting hunt, follow these basic tips for hosting an adult scavenger hunt.

Step 1: Choose a Location

To being the process of hosting a scavenger hunt, choose your location. Will this be outdoors, indoors, at a venue, or at a special location? Knowing the location of your event, helps you decide what types of clues to have. Will your clues lead to a garden house or a popular store in the mall?

Step 2: Choosing a Theme for your Scavenger Hunt

Once you have the location, consider the occasion. If this is for a special occasion, it might easily establish your scavenger hunt theme. For example a baby shower or birthday party. However, if you have no special occasion or holiday, then you open the possibility of treasure hunt themes – let’s go camping, lake life, red, white, and blue, or even mall madness. Get creative. Your location can help you.

Step 3: Choose your Type of Scavenger Hunt

Once you understand your scavenger hunt location and theme, it’s time to plan the type of scavenger hunt you want. There are two main styles – a scavenger hunt checklist and scavenger hunt clue cards.

When finding items, you can use both physical and virtual items. Virtual items mean one can pick up a smartphone and quickly find something they need on Google. Virutal can also include creating a photo scavenger hunt where only photographic evidence counts.

If creating your own scavenger hunt clues and list of items feels daunting to you, then pre-built scavenger hunt list and customize it. Some of our scavenger hunt sets include editable text for Adobe PDF. Or use pre-built scavenger hunt clues and roll with it adding none of your own personalized ideas and thoughts.

Step 4: Create a List of Scavenger Hunt Rules and Goals

When creating the rules for a scavenger hunt, consider your location, theme, team members, and goal for participation. Is this a team scavenger hunt, is this a race against the clock, or is only one person searching for clues?

Example rules for a scavenger hunt for grown-ups might include:

Time: Is there a time limit for the hunt? Is this man versus clock or team versus team? Can you keep your own pace?

Difficulty: If completing a checklist of activities or things to find, assign various points for each activity based on how hard your list of challenges is.

Participants: Make a list of tasks for the participants! Will your players work with team members or on their own?

Winners: Winners are assigned based on having the most points, completing the tasks first, or finishing the most activities in the set amount of time.

Considering all these things will help you put together your final rules

Step 5: Organize Your Scavenger Hunt Party + Event

Now that you know the location, time, place, theme, and rules, it is important to put it all together before your occasion starts. Download your scavenger hunt printable or create your own. Gather a few prize ideas and set up the clues and scavenger hunt if necessary.

Virtual Scavenger Hunts

One type of scavenger hunt that doesn’t even require anyone in the same location is a virtual scavenger hunt. This type of scavenger hunt can be done over Zoom, Skype, Google Hangout, or even over a text message. To play an online scavenger hunt, one person will act as the moderator and list an object that has to be found. All players will race to bring that item back to video chat. If doing this over text messaging, then players will quickly text a photo of that item and send it to the group over their cell phones. Points are awarded for being the first player to bring back the item, second or even third. Players after the third player get no points. For larger groups, combine into small teams for a bit of fun team building. The winners will enjoy the gloat for the rest of… well… forever. This game is a fun way for friends and family close and far since physical proximity is not necessary for the interaction of remote teams.

The truth is, if your child is not used to traveling, the airport experience might be very exciting to them. When a new environment is not enough, there are plenty of ideas for airport activities to entertain young kids. This can include visiting a play area, grabbing a quick bite, playing with electronics, or going on an airport scavenger hunt.

First, consider your environment. Does the airport have something you don’t typically have in your area? This could be trams or trains. If you have a long layover, allow your kids to ride them. People movers allow for a lot of people watching.

Second, outline your day. It’s important to say on a regular food schedule of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you are changing time zones, try to adapt to the new food pattern of your new city. This is the best way to adapt to a time change.

Third, create an adventure with made-up games. This can include games of I Spy, Mother May I, Simon Says, count the… (fill in the blank), scavenger hunts, and more.

Yes! Completely make this adaptable scavenger hunt your own.  This scavenger hunt game can be a one-player or multiplayer game. Not only will this get them excited and engaged, but it’s the perfect way to spend quality time together, too! Gardening is a great activity for kids and adults – so why not enjoy the process together? Just print to get started!

printable garden journal for kids

Garden journaling is a great activity for so many different reasons. Having the kids journal is such a simple way to get them thinking outside the box!

If you’re looking forward to introducing them to the world of gardening or just having some help in the garden – use this fun garden journal and garden scavenger hunt printable to do just that!

Today we will look at what a garden journal is, how to create your own journal for gardening and explore our super cute garden life journal for kids.

What is Garden Journaling?

Garden journaling is different in the way that it records thoughts while also helping to plan out a garden at the same time. One of the biggest hurdles of having a garden is actually getting started – and this is where having a journal specific to gardening will help.

This is a super fun outdoor activity that helps to connect the want for starting a garden with simple and actionable steps to actually make it happen. Using a garden journal is a great way to encourage freedom to explore thoughts, be creative, and make observations.

This is also a fun way to explore other outdoor activities like Fun Outdoor Scavenger Hunt For Kids as well. Once you get started with this type of outdoor journal, it’ll open your eyes to all the other areas of the great outdoors to explore.

How to start a Garden Journal

The first thing that you need to do is print the journal, and the next part is to grab a pen or a pencil. Those are really the only two steps that you need to take to get started on journaling.

If you want to make it easy to organize and keep a hold of the pages, use a hole punch and a three-ring binder to keep the pages in place. You can also use a clipboard to hold the pages as well.

How do I use a garden journal?

Great question! While every page has specific steps and instructions on them, it’s up to you to decide how you want to use this journal.

There are no set “rules” for using this journal, but the guidelines are great for keeping focus and for helping foster creative thoughts.

There are also areas where drawings and notes can easily be added so that if someone gets a fun thought or sees a beautiful flower or plant while in the garden area, they can easily draw it or write it down to remember or come back to later.

The best part about journaling is that you can totally go off the radar and make it your own thing, too! This is your journal with your thoughts and your ideas, so it just makes sense to make it your own.

Garden Activities Printable

What I find really interesting about gardening is that no two gardens are the same. Some focus more on planting and growing flowers, while others will have herbs and vegetables. And let’s not forget all the various sizes, locations, and varied growing times.

In this garden printable set, have fun exploring the objects that are found, planting times, and just being able to immerse yourself in the garden scene so that you can see the beauty.

The fun part about having a printable packet for gardening is that it lets you slow down and take the time to observe. This would be perfect to combine with hiking to get outside and explore.

Included in this garden printable activity:

  • Garden Log Cover Page
  • Garden Journal Planting Log
  • Garden Observations
  • Garden Scavenger Hunt List (written)
  • Garden Scavenger Hunt List (with photo prompts)

Even though this journal isn’t editable, you can print it as many times as you want for your various gardening activities. If you have multiple kiddos or want to use it to teach a gardening lesson, it’s perfect for doing just that!

Make sure to grab this garden journal for kids! Your first time gardener will love a sweet outdoor activity. The outdoor scavenger hunt plus fun planning pages. This will give them the chance to create their own garden space to grow their own goodies!

This can also be used on a family vacation or a staycation at the local zoo! It’s a great way for parents to guide their kids on the grounds as they learn about the different wildlife.

This zoo animal scavenger hunt set is perfect for kids of all ages. In fact, the set comes in two different style of scavenger hunts – a checklist and rhyming riddle clue cards.

printable zoo scavenger hunt for kids

Zoo Scavenger Hunt Checklist

The first zoo-themed scavenger hunt is a popular zoo animal checklist. Circle the animals as you find them at the zoo. Go in any order. With zoo animal photos, this activity is very easy for preschoolers and younger kids. However, if your focus is older kids, don’t toss this zoo animal checklist. Use it for your scavenger hunt at the zoo for adults and older kids.

Zoo Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards

Is your crowd older? Then use our extra fun zoo scavenger hunt riddles. In this clue based scavenger hunt, read each of the clue cards with zoo animal facts. As you read the clue, uncover the answer. Each zoo animal answer is also found on the zoo scavenger hunt checklist – so with the name of the animal, it keeps things simple and from anyone getting stumped.

How to organize a scavenger hunt at the zoo

Having a public scavenger hunt can always be a little bit of a challenge. This is because zoos are open to the general public and hiding clue cards might be challenging when you don’t’ want anyone to mess up your scavenger hunt. In addition, getting from one size of the zoo to the other size is a hike. Most people find they have covered miles walking at the end of the day.

Because of both the size and people at a zoo, it’s best to keep this scavenger hunt on you all day long. The checklist will be easy. As you pass the animals, circle the animal you have found. See if you can get a fun pattern of circles are even turn it into a BINGO board. How fast can you get five across or five down or five diagonal.

If using the clue cards, give your child all the clues up front. They can read the clues and solve which animal is what. You can also hold on to the zoo map and before you hit a section (say the safari section of the zoo), hand them all the clues that fit the safari animals.

Alternatively, save the entire set of cards for before or even after the zoo visit. They can review animals and fun facts about zoo animals found at their zoo.

While these zoo scavenger hunt riddles cover 20 common zoo animals, all of these animals might not be at the zoo you visit. You can take out those clue cards or keep them in for fun.

Can this zoo scavenger hunt be done at home?

Why not? Turn your home into a zoo (if it isn’t already.)Grab a pen and clipboards and use each of the printables and turn your own house into a zoo. There are a few fun ways to have a zoo scavenger hunt at home. Go on a virtual online zoo tour using some of the popular zoos we listed or turn your house into a pretend zoo. Use dramatic play and place stuffed animals around your home (or print out popular zoo animal pictures) and turn each room into a zoo animal habitat. Older kids can even help set up the at-home zoo for younger kids. name different rooms as habitats like Grassland, Rainforest, Tundra, etc.

Of course, most adults can hold their own in conversation when attending a gathering. If you really want to liven up or entertain adults at a party, incorporate party games. Games lead and direct the fun. They cause people to come out of their shells. If everyone doesn’t know each other well, they are great icebreakers for getting the party started and introducing new people.

In addition to bringing activities to a boring party, they create memories which is exactly what you want from a party. Party games make an adult party interesting and unforgettable. Something guests talk about for years to come.

List of Fun Adult Birthday Party Games

Playing games at your next birthday party is a great way for your friends to get to know each other and share a laugh.  There are several group games you can play that will entertain your guests (and guest of honor) and get the party going.

To help make your night one to remember, I’ve pulled together some of my favorite birthday party games for adults.

Best of all, these games are super-easy to plan and you probably already have the supplies on hand.  So grab some friends and get ready to enjoy a night full of laughs!

Adult Birthday Party Games

These are some of the best adult birthday party games:

I’m Going To A Bar

This memory game is fun to play after the drinks have been flowing for a while. Guests will go around the circle naming what items they would bring to the bar in alphabetical order. Start with the birthday person. Then each person builds onto the list, but if you forget an item, you’re out. The last person left is the winner!

Junk in the Trunk

In this classic Minute to Win it Game, get ready to shake it to win! This hilarious game will have your guests working hard to jiggle all of the ping pong balls out of the container attached to their waist the fastest. Imagine the moves that will go down in history with this game!

Straight Face

This game of skill is a challenge to see who can read the silliest sentences without cracking a grin. Each player writes a crazy sentence on a slip of paper and adds it to the basket. Players then take turns reading a sentence aloud while trying to not laugh or smile. Anyone who laughs, snickers, or grins is out. You can also up the punishment by making offenders take a shot!

Charades

You can’t go wrong with a fun game of Charades (or Pictionary.) To get things started, use the cards included in the packet for the game. You can also give each of your guests a few minutes to come up with some funny suggestions with blank cards to personalize the game to your friend group. This game is all about creativity and using your imagination, so the more outrageous the charade, the better!

Bite the Bag

Sorta like limbo but not. This is a hilariously funny game that gets worse as the night goes on. Place a brown paper bag on the floor. A player must reach down and pick it up with their mouth. The only thing that is allowed to touch the floor is your feet (no hands, no knees) and the only thing that is allowed to touch the bag is your mouth. After every round, cut off an inch from the top of the bag and play again. This game is like limbo in reverse. How low can you go?

Two Truths and a Lie

This is a great icebreaker game or getting-to-know-you game for early in the night. Pick 3 statements to tell about yourself. Example: “I have two siblings, I’ve been to three continents, and I love cats.” Two should be true; one should be a lie. Everyone else must guess which is the lie. If you’re playing with family or friends, pick obscure details to try to trick each other to make it even more fun.

Scavenger Hunt

If you have some time, do something unusual like a one-hour scavenger hunt. Instead of doing this at home, go around town. Team members will try to find some of the strangest things like a Refrigerator box, coin from 1983, town clock, egg carton, deposit slip, take-out menu, or even a photo of the entire team in a shopping cart.

To help your friends meet new friends, pair up your groups with friends that might not know each other well yet. From the start line to the finish line, the around-town scavenger hunt team bonding will quickly create new friendships and are great ice breakers to the start of the night. Wait until you hear all the stories up on the return of the birthday hunt.
