On the road again….

Spring break, summer break, holiday breaks. Whatever the reason, travel is around the corner and soon families will be hitting the road for vacation. Family road trips can be a great way to spend time together, but they can also be long and tedious if you are not prepared.

How do you make a car ride fun?

We asked some moms, how do you make a car ride fun? There were plenty of fun answers to make a long road trip more comfortable.

  • Charge electronics before a trip so they kids can have screen time
  • Pack a lot of snacks
  • Purchase new toys and games for a car treasure chest
  • Watch a movie on a car screen
  • Download audio books
  • Plan pit stops at fun places

While we agree with many of these ideas, some of them could become quite costly. Instead of adding everything to a very expensive online shopping cart…. Instead of everyone putting on head phones and looking at their tablets…. Put the electronics down and try some low-cost verbal games with your family.

We put together some fun car games for families you can print today! What makes this set of 12 road trip games unique is that they require very few supplies. They are also perfect car boredom busters creating family fun for everyone – young and old.

Some popular road trip games include I Spy, 20 Questions, The Alphabet Game, The License Plate Game, The Counting Game, and Road Trip Bingo.

Here’s a quick overview of how to play car games listed in our printable set.

I Spy: This classic game is perfect for young children and can be played by anyone. One person starts by saying, “I spy with my little eye something that is (color, shape, texture, etc.).” The other players then have to guess what object the first person is thinking of.

20 Questions: This game is similar to I Spy, but instead of describing an object, the player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The other players then get to ask 20 questions to try to figure out what the player is thinking of.

The Alphabet Game: The goal of this game is to spot objects in alphabetical order staring with letter a, then letter b and so on. For example, you might see an Acura, balloon, and cat. The next person would then have to find something that starts with the letter D.

The License Plate Game: This game is played by looking for license plates from different states. The first person to spot a license plate from every state wins the game. It’s hard to get 50 state tags when you involve Hawaii and Alaska!

Animal Name Game: Perfect their spelling you start listing this series of animals. Let the fun continue when each player list the name of an animal that starts when the ending letter of the alphabet from the pervious animal listed. See if you can stump the next player!

Car Cricket: Pay attention to the color of cars and try to score the most points when you are up to bat. This game has no skill but see who will get lucky racking up their points to 100 winning the game first.

Connections: Connect words in this fun ongoing game. It will be quite insightful to see how the whole family sees different words and how different things string together in their mind making each invidudal unique.

Conversation Starters: Get to know your family with these conversation starters. Perfect for the dinner table, they also can be used in the car for road trip fun!

Sing a Long String a Long: Warm up your vocal chords and try to catch a tune. String the line of a song with a new song when you connect words from lyrics

I’m Going on a Picnic: In this game, the first player lists something they are bringing on a picnic. The second person repeats their items and adds one of their own items. The game continues with a string of items added to the picnic basket. (Don’t worry – it doesn’t have to fit inside, get creative with ideas!)

Impersonation: See if you can identify the actor or character your carmate is impersonating!

Alphabet Categories: MORE

What makes these the best car games is they can easily be adapted to younger kids, older kids and even adults. In fact, I was reminiscing playing with my youth group leader as a teen driving cross country. That means, both a 15 year old and 35 year old found this engaging and fun!

These frugal friendly games are mostly spoken word games. So the driver can use his/her mind and engage on the fun too. When a checklist is needed, a passenger can keep track of their score.

On your beach vacation, be sure to download a free Beach Scavenger Hunt printable and beach craft. Keep the kids busy with a sand bucket & cute outdoor treasure hunt!

Okay, we all know vacations aren’t always relaxing. Often family vacations are echoed with “what’s next?!” While the sand and waves are really fun, it’s possible you will hear cries of “I’m bored” or my favorite “I don’t know what to do!” If you are looking for activities for the beach, take a look at this fun list of beach activities for the kids (and kids at heart!)

What are some fun things to do at the beach?

Summer is the perfect time of year to head to the beach. If you are looking for fun beach activities, we have a really good checklist of ideas for kids of all ages. From games, to water play, contests and more, you will have so much fun you might have to set a timer to remind you to reapply sunscreen! It’s easy to burn when you are distracted!

Some of our favorite activities include…

fun beach games to play at the beach

  • Beach Games: Beach games are perfect for using common items you already have in the sand. Ideas include beach Frisbee golf, water relays, beach bowling and more. They are beach activities that will fill the entire day and give someone the claim of victory!
  • Sand Castle Contest: Divide in teams and see who can build the best sand castle. The whole team can look for natural decorations like seashells, seaweed and more.
  • Sand Pictionary: Use the sand to play Pictionary. Divide in teams. Teammates will draw pictures in the sand while their team tries to guess. Items can include an ocean animal, objects found on the beach and more.
  • Fly at Kite: We all know about kites but how often do you get the perfect day to do this outdoor activity? The beach is perfect for giving the right amount of wind to fly a kite.
  • Beach Crafts: Using sea shells and other beach items, turn your finds into art work. You can also upcycle trash found on the beach for a fun beach craft. Ideas include water bottle jelly fish, sand Play-doh and more.
  • Beach Party: While on your beach vacation, have a beach themed party. This can include a pirate party, kid’s baby shark party, adult white party, or even a teen glow in the dark neon party.
  • Minute to Win It Games with Water: Enjoy these water games for kids  that last only 60 seconds.
  • Have a Beach Treasure Hunt: Divide in groups for a team building scavenger hunt. Use a beach scavenger hunt list to find items commonly found on the beach.

If you are headed to the beach this summer, consider this free printable Beach Scavenger Hunt for the kids. It will busy them for awhile. Consider filling as well, their bucket with a snack and drink while they look! This is also good for red flag days when the sea is rough and you can’t get in the ocean.

Beach Tip: consider shipping beach toys from amazon to your beach vacation home. Alternatively, when you arrive at your rented beach house, see if toys were left behind. Many houses end up with renters leftover beach items and supplies. You can also hit the dollar store when you arrive at the beach and leave behind any beach supplies you do not want to cart back home.

fun beach games to play at the beach

Beach Theme Scavenger Hunt

With so many cool things to see on the beach, this beach treasure hunt is certain to be a blast. Just create a list of treasures, split into two teams, and see who can find all the items first. Make certain that you add some fun and wacky things that you’d only be able to find on the beach.

Supplies: paper, pencil, beach scavenger hunt list

Mini Golf

You don’t need a golf course to play golf. Just bring a few clubs from home (or pick up some cheap ones at a second-hand store) and make the beach be your course. Dig a hole in the sand and put or put a few cups out to try and hit the balls into. Use your creativity to play just like a real round of golf where the person with the lowest swings wins.

Supplies: cups, golf ball, golf clubs

Squirt Ball Relay

The quicker you are here, the better. Grab a blown-up beach bowl and a squirt gun full of water and see who can use the water from the squirt gun to push the ball across the sand to the finish line. Don’t worry, you’ll more than likely run out of water and have to run to the water and fill up during this time!

Supplies: beach bowl, water gun

Beach Towel Parachute

The concept of this game is fun and addicting. Have a beach ball in the middle of a beach towel. Have two people hold the tall and use it to bounce the beach ball up and down. The more bounces, the better because if it hits the ground, you have to start counting all over again.

Supplies: beach ball, beach towel

Musical Towels

The same rules apply here as musical chairs but you use towels instead. Lay the towels out on the sand, have the music playing, and let everyone walk around and do their best to scramble to a towel once the music stops!

Supplies; beach towels, radio/music player

Beach Bowling

Put those empty water bottles to good use. Line them up in the sand and then use a ping pong ball and try to knock them down. Can you do a strike? Only time will tell!

Supplies: empty water bottles

Shell Shuffle

Who can balance the shell the best? All you need to do is balance dry sand on a spoon and place a shell on top and the race is on. Who can carry the shell back and forth the quickest without it falling off?

Supplies: shells, sand, spoons

5 Hole Sand Hole

If you’ve ever played cornhole, you’re going to have a leg up on this game. Start by digging five holes into the sand and make certain to give them a bit of space in the sand as well. Use a ball and do your best to fit the ball into the holes so start racking up the points.

Supplies: balls

Flick n Sticks

This game is fast and fun to set up! All you need are 4 sticks/stakes, 4 cups (2 pairs of the same color), and a frisbee. Put the stakes in the sand several feet apart from one another. (You can decide the distance and can easily shorten or lengthen it as needed.) Split into teams of 2 and have each team stand at a stake. Take turns tossing the frisbee back and forth with the main goal of getting points. Points are earned by throwing the frisbee in between the 2 stakes and extra points are also earned for knocking the cup off the stakes as well.

Supplies: stakes/sticks, cups, frisbee

Frisbee Golf

Who says you need a frisbee golf course? Just set out some fun beach items and use your frisbee to toss and get as close as you possibly can. The one who throws the flying disc closest wins that “hole”.

Supplies: beach items, frisbee

Water Bucket Relay

Such a fun water challenge to play! Grab a cup and a couple of buckets and get geared up. Each person takes the empty cup, runs and gets water in it, then takes that cup of water and runs to the empty bucket to fill it up. The first person or team to fill their bucket wins!

Supplies: plastic cups, buckets

Beach Blow

It’s time to get down on your hands and knees and dig! Take a spoon or a small shovel and dig out a path. Then drop a ping pong ball into the groves, grab a straw, and blow your air through the straw to move the ping pong ball down the path. If you don’t want to dig two paths for competition, just set a timer and see who can complete it the fastest.

Supplies: spoon/small shovel, straw, ping pong ball

Hot Potato

Since you’re on the beach it just makes sense to pass around a beach ball instead of a potato, right? Have everyone sit in a circle and start passing the ball around while the music is playing. Be quick and careful with your passes as the person who is holding the beach ball when the music stops is out of the game.

Supplies: beach ball, music player

Sponge Relay

Just how much water does a sponge really hold? You’re about to find out. Have sponges in a bucket of water at the start line, and an empty bowl at the finish line. Once “go” is said, each person then has to grab a soaked sponge, sprint down to the empty bucket, squeeze out the water, then head back to do it all over again. The team who fills the empty bowl overflowing with water first wins!

Supplies: sponges, bowls

Beach Ball Relay

Air up those beach balls and get ready to run. Have each team line up, one behind each other, and get ready. The first person grabs the ball, sprints to the other end of the beach, and then sprints back to hand off to the next person in their relay line. The kicker? If the ball gets dropped at any point in time, they have to start over and do it again!

Supplies: beach balls

Pass the Water

Do you have what it takes to not spill a drop? Have teams line up in a row and give the first person in line a cup of water. Once “go” is said, the person holding the water cup full of water has to hold the cup over their hand and pour out the water into the empty cup of the person behind them. Do this until the entire team has done it and then see what team has the most water in the final cup!

Supplies: cups

Wet Shirt Relay

Line up the teams and get ready to “wring” out some fun. Have a bucket with a t-shirt in it, ready to go. The first person in line grabs the wet shirt and sprints across the beach to an empty bucket or bowl, waiting to be filled. The person wrings all the water out of the shirt and then takes the shirt back to the next person in line who starts the process again. The first team to fill the bucket with water wins!

Supplies: beach bucket or bowl, T-shirts

Some of us just can’t stand the rain. The best thing is we can all check a forecast ahead of time and if it does forecast rain at any point during your vacation you can be prepared. Here are some of the things you can do if you plan on staying inside the tent when it starts to rain.

Bring with you some emergency board games

One of the first things you could do would be to pack up some emergency board games. These are great for evenings anyway even when you aren’t camping in the rain but they are perfect to pull out when the weather starts to descend. Games like Monopoly or Ticket to Ride are great games that take a little longer. Also consider these indoor games if you have the space. So the chances are when you are done, the rain will have stopped and you can venture outdoors.

Card games are always a winner

Card games are also great for when it starts to rain. There are many card games that are age-appropriate for kids and you could even use the time to teach them something new. Again cards are perfect to keep you entertained and occupied at night and a lovely bonding activity before bed.

Make hot chocolate

There is nothing cozier than being warm and listening to the rain and there is something quite magical about being outside yet still warm and dry. Make it extra special by making some camping hot chocolate. Pack a supply just in case and then enjoy the moment.

Use a device and watch a movie

If you brought iPads with you, which let’s face it with kids is likely, then why not download a few films to one of them in case you end up camping in the rain. You can put one on and then watch it together while you wait out the weather.

Hang your clothes to dry

It is likely inevitable your clothes will get wet. When your clothes are soaked, it might be tempting to dump them in the corner but this will add moisture to the temp and also smell like mildew.

Hang wet clothes on a DIY clothesline. under extra tarps to dry. When the sun comes out, you can remove the tarp so you clothes get direct sunlight. Add hand warmers to shoes to keep them warm and to speed up the drying process. Taking time to manage the moisture factor will make your trip a lot more pleasant.

Camping in the Rain Activities

camping in the rain activities

If you want to embrace the rain, get your camping rain jacket, wet gear and water boots and let’s make some life-long memories.

Some people don’t mind the rain and often expect it when camping. There are lots you can do if you want to embrace the rain. Here are some suggestions.

Go and explore

One of the first things to do would be to put on your waterproofs and head out in it. Go for a walk and explore. Nature looks different in all kinds of weather and you may be able to spot some insects and animals that you might not have done if the sun was shining. If you do not have the proper rain gear, grab a garbage bag and turn it into a DIY poncho.

Open water swimming

Don’t stay dry, get wet. Swimming is always a fun activity but swimming in the rain just takes it to the next level. Besides, you are already wet so you may as well just enjoy it. Open water swimming in lakes and rivers are great options for when it rains. Obviously use precaution and make sure it is not thundering and lighting.

Fishing

Fish seem to come to the surface a little more when it’s raining. So if the family are keen fishers then this could be the perfect time to go out with your fishing gear. Dress up in your waterproofs and pack some warm drinks to keep you going.

Water games

Put on an extra layer of clothes or strip down to your wet gear or swim suits. Try something out of the norm like these Minute to Win it Water Games.  Be prepared for 16 splash-tastic 60-second challenges. Laminate your minute to win it directions and supply list before you packing for your camping trip.

Outdoor games

Take all your camping games and play in the wet weather. Using many common supplies found on your camping checklist, enjoy these outdoor games in the rain. You can even go on a camping scavenger hunt (just add the clues to the inside of a Ziploc bag) to keep them protecting from the moisture.

Take your dog out

If you brought your dog camping with you then why not take them out for a walk? Your dog really won’t mind the rain, and it can be a fun activity for everyone to do. You will need to prepare with lots of towels before you leave, so you can get cleaned up the moment you arrive back at your tent.

Jumping in puddles

Finally, the simple activity of jumping in puddles is fun for any age, adults included. So if you have been camping in the rain then there is a big chance there will be plenty of puddles for you to explore.

Also be sure to check out our Rainy Day Activities. This incudes a list of fun things to do in the rain kids activities for indoor (or in the tent) and outdoor fun. (Share on Pinterest)

  • Camping: this is when you set up a place outside your home where you’ll stay for the evening or weekend and enjoy nature all around you. Camping includes setting up camp with tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment and other things related to living outdoors away from your own home. You might need gear like hiking boots, backpacks, food storage containers or even a portable stove.

Glamps are always prepared for everything because they know what it takes to create this experience of being out in nature but still feeling like home.

If you’re interested in keeping your experience having all of the comforts while still being close with nature, you’ll want a tent that serves your needs. But what should you look for?

Best Things to Do at Hersheypark + Win 8 Hersheypark Tickets

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

September 7, 2021 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Social Media, Travel 32 Comments

What are some of the best things to do at Hersheypark? From roller coasters to great eats, enjoy Hersheypark hacks and tips plus how to get Hersheypark discount tickets.

Hershey Park Hacks

In the adorable small town of Hershey, PA sits one of the sweetest places on earth – Hersheypark.

As many of you know, Virginia has been our home for over six years. I can’t believe it took us this long to find the place where milk and honey chocolate flow. This past weekend we entered the park’s gates and spent the best weekend enjoying food, rides, entertainment and more.  As a girl born and raised on the outskirts of Orlando, I turned to my husband on the last day of our trip and said, “our kids are not missing out!”

Hersheypark will fill the heart of any theme park lover… get ready to learn about this slice of heaven in the heart of Pennsylvania.

What is there to do at Hersheypark?

I hate to sound cliché, but this question must really be turned around. What is there NOT to do at Hersheypark. From great eats, roller coasters, shows and more, Hersheypark offers entertainment for children of all ages – that includes you mom and dad! Enjoy theme park rides, create your own chocolate, eat some of the best bites and prepar to be amazed as we look at the many things to do in Hershey, PA.

Hershey’s Chocolate World

Looking for something free to do in Hershey, PA? Visit Hersheypark Chocolate World. Located next to the park, unwrap your chocolate cravings with a Chocolate World’s free Hershey’s Chocolate Tour. When visiting Chocolate world, you can also create your own one-of-a-kind candy bar, shop Hershey gifts and souvenirs, or enjoy world-famous milkshakes and bakery treats.

Hersheypark chocolate world family

Chocolate World is open year round and located next to Hersheypark. It’s a great way to get a taste (pun intended) of Hershey without entering the park.

Roller Coasters

If you have a thrillist that loves a good roller coaster, there is something for everyone – from toddlers to adults.  Be sure to try Hersheypark’s new ride, Candymonium®. Located at the park entrance, this roller coaster ride is the tallest, fastest, longest, and sweetest coaster in Hersheypark.

Speaking of coasters, it’s important to know how your child measures up. Located in the park is a ride height chart.  For your convenience, each ride also has measuring sticks and lists eligible riders.

Hersheypark Height Chart

Hershey Miniatures: under 36″
Hershey Kisses: 36″ – 42″
Reese’s: 42″ – 48″
Hersheys: 48″ – 54″
Twizzlers: 54″ – 60″
Jolly Rancher:  60″ and taller

To give you a general idea my 3 year old twins were Hershey Kisses, my 4 (almost 5 year old) was a Reese’s and my preteens and adults were Jolly Ranchers.

As the parent who often had the youngest kids (while the bigger kids experienced the fastest, most exhilarating coasters), I found something around these coasters the younger kids could do. From games, to smaller rides, my toddlers did not feel left out at any time.

Hersheypark Rides

hersheypark rides

The park offers man classic amusement park rides including wooden roller coasters, water log rides, tea cups and a carousel.  For our family, founder’s Way was great for Hershey Miniatures, Hershey Kisses and Reese’s. When exploring outside of this area, the Hersheypark app was great for viewing a park map, looking at ride wait times and getting directions to your next location.

Hersheypark Water Park

Ready to cool off? Make a splash at the 11-acre water park inside the park. The The Boardwalk at Hersheypark is included with all summer admission tickets. Slides, tubes, and pools of fun to cool off from the hot sun. The Boardwalk at Hersheypark.

As a Hersheypark tip, it is good to know that the are lockers around the park if you want to lock up your wet apparel or valuables.

Hersheypark Stadium

For evenings, Hersheypark Stadium provides the entertainment. Experience concerts by the most prominent names in the music industry. Sounds for ages young to old. If you are staying at a Hershey hotel, many shuttles run through the concert hours ensuring you get back to your bed safely.

Visit here for a list of artists and Hersheypark event schedule.

Hersheypark Hotels

Hershey hotels come with my nice amenities. First, they offer shuttle service to the park so you can leave your car at the hotel. In addition, enjoy their pools and water activities, a game room, s’mores campfire events, restaurants, and other seasonal activities.

One benefit of staying at a park hotel is getting to the park an hour before it opens. If you area park expert, this is great because you can race to the rides that typically have the longest lines or perhaps just enjoy the park with fewer people.

Where is there to stay at Hershey? Visit the Hotel Hershey, the Hershey Lodge and also the Hersheypark camping resort. If you have a home on wheels or want to experience a bit of cabin life, check out Hersheypark campground.

Hersheypark Halloween

Hersheypark In The Dark takes place three weekends in October. Enjoy a spooktacular-ly good time filled with your favorite rides and coasters, chocolatey trick or treat adventures, wild zoo visits, and festive Hershey Character experiences. It takes a “fall festival” to the next level.

Hersheypark Christmas

Are touring Christmas lights on your winter bucket list? Enjoy more than 5 million lights for the most merry event of the year, Hersheypark Christmas Candylane®! Deck the halls with your favorite rides and coasters, a visit with Santa and his reindeer, festive Hershey Character experiences, and more. This event takes place mid November to early January.

The Best Airplane Activities for Kids + Airplane Toys for Toddlers

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

July 9, 2021 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Facebook, Instagram, Parenting, Pinterest, Social Media, Travel

Traveling with children can be frazzling. Turn a crazy trip into a relaxing trip by prepping ahead with the best airplane activities for kids and toddlers. A list of airplane toys for toddlers, kids activities, what documents are needed for travel and more. Happy travels!

Traveling with kids can be tough! Does anyone get more scared of the plane ride over the actual trip? When I fly with my five, I always plan weeks in advance what I will carry on the plane (the suitcase contents tend to be thought of more last minute!) That being said, I did my research and came up with some Airplane Activities for Kids. These are idea for kids ages 2 and up (though many of them can be modified to fit your younger child!)

What documents are needed when flying with a child?

For children under the age of 18, TSA does not require identification. Adult companions will need a valid form of identification.

If a child is flying as an unaccompanied minor, you must organize with the airline. You will need to pay for an unaccompanied minor service. The adult dropping off the child must have identification as well as the adult picking up the child. In most airports, even if you are not flying, an adult may go through security to pick up the child at the gate. This can occur after getting a pass from the airline at the check-in desk.

How do you travel with kids on a plane?

If your child finds interest in new environments, flying might be very successful for them. Despite the distractions, it’s important to fly equip with activities and toys to distract your toddlers and kids.

When traveling, have a thin blanket, socks, a cardigan or sweatshirt for comfort. It is important to also bring snacks. Layovers, open restaurants and an airline snack cart and be quite unpredictable. A happy child is usually a full child. Bring snacks your child doesn’t have often so it feels a bit like a treat.

Airplane Activities for Kids

In order to create happy travels for kids, you need happy distractions!

Every time  the kids and I traveled, I picked up one of these Mosaic Sticker Craft Kids for Kids. They buy time. The buy multiple times because the kids will do one (which takes away), put it away and then move on to do another one later (again it takes awhile.) If you have little hands that can get distracted by this activity, I swear by these mosaic sticker art kits for kids.
