What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD

Snowman Cupcakes

If you are enjoying a blizzard or just enjoy the thought of snow, these snowman cupcakes are perfect for the winter season! We love the easy and cute face topper! Enjoy after school, send in for a party, or share with neighbors during a snow day!

Ingredients:

Box White Cake Mix (calls for eggs, oil, and water)
White Vanilla Marshmallow Frosting
Chocolate Chips
Betty Crocker Orange Icing Mix
Small Pretzel Sticks
Edible White Sugar Glitter
Decorating Bag
Round Tip for Icing

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350° in line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together your cake mix, eggs, oil, and water.
Fill your cupcake liners up halfway with your cake batter and bake for 15 minutes.
Remove your cupcakes from the oven and let them cool.
Stir your can of frosting and scoop into a decorating bag, and cut the tip off the bottom of the bag.
Frost your cupcakes by drawing a swirl onto your cupcakes starting at the outside and working your way in.
Sprinkle your shimmer sugar on each cupcake.
Place your chocolate chips upside down on your cupcakes for eyes and a mouth, making sure to leave a space in the center for the nose.
Lightly press on the tip of your frosting can to draw on a carrot shaped nose under the eyes.
Now break a pretzel in half and stock each pretzel half broken side down into the top sides of the cupcakes.

Kids’ Thanksgiving Food Craft – Pilgrim Hats

With the dawn of fall comes falling leaves, cornucopia, apples, and of course Thanksgiving and Pilgrims. We wanted to celebrate the fall with a festive Thanksgiving Food Craft for the kids – Pilgrim Hats. The recipe craft is simple, cookies, Rolos, starburst and melting chocolates.

These would be a great snack for a Thanksgiving class party! Just check for allergies in the classroom.

Enjoy!

Pilgrim Hats Thanksgiving Food Craft
Yield: 12 Hats

Ingredients:

12 Keebler Grasshopper Cookies (in the past we used OREO Fudge Cremes)
12 Rolos
2 Yellow Starburst
1/4 cup Orange Melting Chips (or use white and add orange food coloring)

Directions:

Unwrap Starburst and work between fingers to soften and flatten.
Cut to create 12 small rectangles to use as buckles for each hat.
Heat Orange Candy Chips in large bowl by microwaving for 30 seconds stirring and repeating until melted.
Arrange 12 cookies on flat surface.
Dip Rolo about halfway down in orange chocolate. Allow excess to drip off.

Homemade Backyard Spray

Summer is here, so are the bugs! You want your kids to be protected from bites but, don’t want those harsh chemicals on them. A natural alternative is here and so much better for your skin! This Homemade Backyard Spray includes the soft feel and beautiful scent of Essential Oils. We used Lavender, but you can use other scents too including Citronella, a known bug repellent! Summer tip: On super hot days, Put it in the refrigerator for a bit then, spray on to help you cool off!

Ingredients:

Witch Hazel
Vegetable Glycerin
Distilled Water
Lavender Essential Oil (or other essential oil known to repel bugs*)
Optional: Citronella

Other Supplies Needed:

Measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Spray bottle (we love glass if you are using this long term!)

Directions:

Measure about 2 cups of witch hazel into the measuring cup.
Pour the witch hazel into your spray bottle then fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water.
Remember to leave enough room to add the rest of the ingredients.
Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable glycerin to the spray bottle.
Add 10-20 drops of lavender Essential Oil to the spray bottle.
Shake the spray bottle until all the ingredients are well mixed.
Spray on your skin or in areas of your home you want to repell bugs. Repeat as needed.

*Essential Oils that can be used for the homemade spray include Citronella – a bug repellent, Clove, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Cajeput, Eucalyptus, Cedar, Catnip, or Mint

Cotton Candy Cupcakes

Not only are these bright and fun just like a cloud of cotton candy, but they taste just like cotton candy! We used cotton candy flavoring and food coloring to make these cupcakes perfect for a birthday party, after school celebration or any ole reason to have something yum!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 Sticks softened salted butter
2/3 Cup granulated sugar
1 Tablespoons Lorann cotton candy flavoring
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup milk
1 1/2 Cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 Teaspoons baking powder
1 can of vanilla frosting
Pink, blue, and purple gel food coloring

Materials:

Large mixing bowl
Baking cups
Cupcake pan
Mixing bowl
Hand or stand mixer
Measuring cups
3 small mixing bowls
4 decorating bags
Decorating tip kit-large star tip

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
In a large mixing bowl beat together your butter and sugar until it has a whipped texture (about 1 minute).
Mix in your eggs and milk.
Now mix in your flour and baking soda.
Once your batter is mixed, mix in your cotton candy flavoring.
Separate your batter into 3 separate bowls, add 2 drops of food coloring to each bowl to make 3 separate colors.
Scoop in 1 Tablespoon of each color batter to each baking cup.
Bake for 20 minutes then let cool.
While your cupcakes are cooling, separate your frosting to 3 separate bowls, and add 2 drops of food coloring to each bowl to make 3 separate colors.
Scoop each color into a different decorating bag and cut the tips off the bags.
Remove the ring from your coupler base and drop the coupler into a empty decorating bag, cut the tip off the bag, and place your star tip onto the coupler, then place the ring back onto the bag.
Place your 3 frosting filled bags into the empty bag and twist the top.
Starting on the outside of your cupcakes, begin frosting in a swirl to the center of your cupcakes

Kids’ Thanksgiving Food Craft – Turkey Cookies

You know we love our fun baking ideas for kids, that is why we had to share a new Thanksgiving Food Craft. This time we used nutter butter cookies, chocolate, candy corn and some candy eyes! How precious are these Turkey Cookies. They might not be best for as classroom party as they contain peanuts/peanut butter, but they make one precious Thanksgiving Dessert Idea for the kids at home!

Thanksgiving Turkey Cookies
Yield: 6 Turkeys

Ingredients:

6 Nutter Butters
6 Mini Nutter Butters
1/2 cup Dark Cocoa Candy Melting Chips
21 pieces of Candy Corn for feathers and beak
12 Candy Eyes

Directions:

Trim three candy corn and cut off the yellow and white part. Take that trimmed piece and cut in half to make six beaks.
Heat Dark Cocoa Candy Chips by microwaving for 30 seconds stirring and repeating until melted. Allow to cool slightly (maybe 2 minutes.)
Dip Nutter Butter in melted candy.
Carefully remove from candy and let excess drip off.
Lay cookie on wax paper. Use spoon to smooth any finger spots.
Place Mini Nutter Butter on bottom half to make head.
Press 3 pieces of candy corn into top to make feathers.
Carefully place a little melted candy on back side of candy eyes and place on your turkey.
Carefully place a little melted candy on back side of your beak and place on your turkey.
Immediately place in refrigerator for 10 minutes to set your turkey cookie.
Enjoy!

Christmas Tree Rice Krispie Treats

Celebrate the season with these festive Christmas Tree Rice Krispie Treats. We love how simple they are to make and how many food crafting fun options there are with them. Mix it up this year, instead of cookie decorating make a forest of these little trees and have the kiddos decorate them to their hearts content. They will love adding icing, sprinkles and candy to make their own special trees. This would also be a fun food craft to take to a classroom party. Happy holidays!

Ingredients:

6 cup Rice Krispies Cereal
3 tbsp Butter
10.5 oz Marshmallows
Green Food Coloring
12 Miniature Reese’s Cups
1/3 cup M&M Minis
12 Candy Stars
3 cup Powdered Sugar
3 tbsp Milk
3 tbsp Corn Syrup

Directions:

To help in forming the cone shape, I took the foam that comes in a waffle cone pack to protect the cones and cut it to make a form to help shape the trees.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium to large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted.
Add enough food coloring to make mixture dark green (it will lighten when cereal is added).
Remove from heat.
Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until cereal is well coated.
Allow to set about 4 minutes.
Butter a your hands and form mixture into cone shapes.
Place cones onto prepared pan.
Allow to cool and firm up for several hours.
Mix powdered sugar, milk and corn syrup in a bowl until smooth.
Transfer to piping bag or zippered bag to pipe onto cookies.
Pipe like a garland around each tree.
Space M&M minis like ornaments onto the garland.
Pipe a dab of icing on top of tree to act as glue and attach star.
Place a Reese’s upside down on pan. Pipe icing on it and place tree on top.
Allow to set before serving.

Instructions

To help in forming the cone shape, I took the foam that comes in a waffle cone pack to protect the cones and cut it to make a form to help shape the trees.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium to large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted.
Add enough food coloring to make mixture dark green (it will lighten when cereal is added).
Remove from heat.
Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until cereal is well coated.
Allow to set about 4 minutes.
Butter a your hands and form mixture into cone shapes.
Place cones onto prepared pan.
Allow to cool and firm up for several hours.
Mix powdered sugar, milk and corn syrup in a bowl until smooth.
Transfer to piping bag or zippered bag to pipe onto cookies.
Pipe like a garland around each tree.
Space M&M minis like ornaments onto the garland.
Pipe a dab of icing on top of tree to act as glue and attach star.
Place a Reese’s upside down on pan. Pipe icing on it and place tree on top.
Allow to set before serving.
