Elf on the Shelf Arrival

  • Elf Arrives in balloon

  • Elf has a Thanksgiving Day Parade

Elf on the Shelf Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

For this Elf on the Shelf return idea, we created an at home Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Just like the parade you would see Thanksgiving Morning in Manhattan or NBC.

If you want to recreate this Elf on the Shelf parade, you do need a few supplies.

Elf on the Shelf Supplies Needed

  • The Elf on the Shelf Doll(s)
  • Elf on the Shelf Balloon
  • Balloon Pump
  • String
  • Baker’s Red & White Twine
  • Santa Claus Christmas Décor
  • Tape
  • Elf Prop Stands
  • Claus Couture Collection Sugar-Plum Soldier
  • Claus Couture Snow Outfit
  • Red and White Polka-Dot Elf Skirt
  • Paper
  • Printer
  • Bamboo Skewers
  • Scissors
  • Parade Banner Digital Download
  • I also used slip on posable hand mittens and adorable elf high top sneakers when creating this scene.

Elf on the Shelf Helium Balloon

I ordered an Elf on the Shelf balloon (here and here) and took it to my local grocery store to add helium. However, at the store, the helium did not lift the balloon off the ground. Ironically it still wanted to sit “on the shelf.” You can see my child doesn’t even question why I have an Elf in the car… they are used to it.

To get my balloon to look like a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Elf on the Shelf Balloon, I had to tie it from the celling.  I would have saved some money if I had just used my balloon pump.  You can see one of the legs quickly deflated too (as the balloon was in three pieces.) Long story short, stay home. Pump it up yourself. Then use your pump to do this fun Elf on the Shelf stuck in a balloon idea.

Elf on the Shelf Standing Props

I ordered a Claus Couture Elf on the Shelf Holiday Hipster legs that sand, but they had not arrived by the time I needed to do this idea. Instead I used two 18 inch doll stands I had on hand for my Scout elves.  I used two Kaiser Doll Stands and two Qlychee Transparent Stand Supports. Were I to tell you one is better than the other, I would highly suggest the Kaiser Doll Stand. The other stand broke easily and was quite annoying.

I used faux snow and Elf on the Shelf clothes to hide the prop stands.

Instructions

To recreate this scene, first begin by taping Elf to the ceiling. You can use clear fishing line or white string. We used white curling ribbon.  I then attached red and white bakers twine to the balloon and had those string fall to the ground or right above the table. Later my elves would hold these strings.

The hardest part was proping my elves. I used stands to stand them up and covered the stands with faux snow (truthfully, this was left over spider web from Halloween!) I took the handing twine and tied it around the elves wrists or placed it in their posable hands.

As we know, every November Santa Claus closes the New York City Parade waving at the parade watchers.

For many of these Elf on the Shelf ideas, make sure you have an elf that can bend. You can do that easily with our Bendable Elf on the Shelf tutorial.

What else can I add to make Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade at home?

If you want to take this to the next step, there are a few things you can add to your home Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Adding marching bands, more floats, balloons and more will make your Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Authentic.

Giant Character Balloons

Add some giant character balloons in the parade at home. Giant Character balloons can include Snoopy, Blue’s Clues, Papa Smurf, Paw Patrol, Sponge Bob, and other character helium balloons.

Balloonicle

To recreate these Balloons on wheels, you don’t need helium. A balloonicle is a Macy’s original creation for the store’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. The word comes from the combination of the two words: “balloon” and “vehicle.” There are no strings attached to this inflatable. Instead it is maneuvered down the Parade route by a vehicle inside of the balloon figure.

Marching Bands

For your parade marchers, Scout Elf brand has an adorable outfit: the Claus Couture Collection Sugar-Plum Soldier. Look for little ornament drops to tie around their necks and take it a step further.

Floats

For added cheer, make your own floats. Or grab your Barbie Convertible cars and add some holiday décor. String lights, confetti, tinsel and more.

Parade Watchers

You could add mini brands as the spectators snack watching the performance in the public viewing locations. Add a parade route map in one of the viewers hands. It can include famous streets like Broadway, 34th Street, Sixth Avenue, Columbus Circle, Central Park, Times Square, and more. Alternatively, you could also make your map cheeky and add terms like “around the couch” down the living room, into the kitchen, etc.

Celebrities

To add famous stars or performance groups to your Macy’s parade, think about your resources. Do you have a Barbie or Ken doll you can dress up as a singer, clowns, some of the dancing Rockettes, or a famous celebrity?

….and of course you need a free Parade Banner to top off your NYC parade!

Elf on the Shelf Ideas for Thanksgiving

You’ve started the Christmas Elf tradition and now you are wondering, when does that funny little red guy return. If it wasn’t on your mind (because most parents hide him deep in the depths of their brain when it isn’t the holiday season), then chances are a little someone has asked the question…

Does the Elf on the Shelf arrive on Thanksgiving?

When Does the Elf on the Shelf Come Back?

The answer is, the Elf on the Shelf returns when you decide. In most homes, the Elf on the Shelf returns on Thanksgiving. Some families choose December 1 as a start date for Elf on a Shelf. Others start even earlier than that beginning the first day of November. If you are a mean mom, Elf on a Shelf monthly makes an appearance the last week before Christmas – wink! You might make Santa’s naughty list if you are this late, though.

What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Different types of hiking

  • Hiking for enjoyment and recreation: this type of hiking is just about getting outside and having fun. You can look up hikes that are close by, plan a day hike or even find some trails with more challenging ascents to get your heart rate going!
  • Day Hikes: these types of hikes usually take place in the morning or afternoon so you can enjoy them before it gets dark out. Day hikes include short distances such as a few miles round trip.
  • Multi-day trips: these types of adventures might require camping gear and planning ahead but they’re worth it if you have time off work! These could be planned on any length of time–a weekend long adventure all the way to an extended vacation. Multi-day trips usually include more difficult ascents and descents as well.
  • Weekend adventures: these are day hikes that last for a few days, including Friday through Sunday. They’re perfect if you don’t have much time off work but still want to explore! Weekend adventures could also be planned on any amount of time–from one night to even four nights (Friday-Monday).
  • Camping: this is when you set up a place outside your home where you’ll stay for the evening or weekend and enjoy nature all around you. Camping includes setting up camp with tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment and other things related to living outdoors away from your own home. You might need gear like hiking boots, backpacks, food storage containers or even a portable stove.

As you can see, there are many different types of hiking adventures that anyone could enjoy! Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just getting started with the sport, we hope this blog post will help inspire your next adventure out into nature!

While it’s possible to fill Christmas traditions for the family in an entire season, these ideas focus on “The Night Before Christmas.” Follow these Christmas Eve Traditions to create family memories for years and even generations. What are you doing December 24th?

Christmas Eve Traditions

Christmas Eve Family Traditions

As our family has grown, traveling for family Christmas is occurring less frequently. It’s always nice to have extended family gathered around the Christmas tree, but the truth is, we pretty much take up the entire circumference.  With a complete family, I have found it important to carry on, and begin new, Christmas Traditions.

Our first Christmas tradition has been Elf on the Shelf. Our family began this tradition in 2013 and we have continued it every Christmas season since. Since Christmas Eve is usually a slow paced day, I decided to roll other family traditions into this day. This included reading Christmas books before bed, making a Birthday Cake for Jesus, going to look at holiday lights, finishing our advent calendar and wearing matching Christmas Pajamas.

While many of these Christmas Eve traditions are ones that a lot of families do, also take a look at some of these unique family traditions that might be a bit out of the box. Perhaps you will try something new and it will stick for years (and generations) to come.

What To Do Christmas Eve

With places closed, there are many things to do Christmas Eve. Focus Christmas Eve on family. Stay home and follow these creative ideas including visiting Christmas lights, family game night, a Christmas movie-a-thon, baking, Christmas crafts, activities and more.

Host a Family Game Night

Christmas 60 Second Challenge Games

Have a Family Game Night (or day.) Play reindeer games, just like Rudolph and his friends. A holiday Christmas Minute to Win it Game Night would be fun, or split into two teams for a Christmas Name that Tune family game night.

Don’t make today challenging. Make a Ginger Bread House. You can purchase a Ginger Bread House Kit or make an easy graham cracker ginger bread kit.  Pull out some of that unwanted Halloween candy (since you won’t be tempted to eat it.)  Alice and Lois share the best glue is actually hot glue. They also share a graham crackers gingerbread house template. All the more reason to keep it for a pretty display.

Magic Reindeer Food Printable & Recipe

25+ Christmas Traditions to Start Right Now

Recently we moved from Florida (my home state of 30+ years) to the Washington, DC area. This put us away from extended family in in a while new world of focusing on our core family. My girls are in the early stages of elementary school and are beginning to understand the real meaning of Christmas. Santa, and additionally the Elf on the Shelf, have gone out the window (yes, he no longer comes down the chimney) and my focus is now on finding activities during the Christmas season that reflect not only family, but reason for the season – The Birth of Christ.  One of the ways we have gotten back to the basics is through our family Advent Calendar.

Erase cries of “I’m bored” with a list of Kid’s Road Trip Games for the Car. You can download this free printable Road Trip Scavenger Hunt to keep the kids busy until you reach your final destination. Honk if this makes you happy!

Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Keeping the kids busy in the car is a lot easier than when we were growing up, no? Between game systems, tablets, e-readers, audio books and movies, it’s easier to get fewer and fewer complaints of “I’m bored!” Of course, when it is uttered, we all have a long story of “Let me tell you what it means to be bored. When I was growing up….”

While your kids might have plenty of resources for staying distracted in the car, we wanted to provide you with some newer ideas to keep their minds fresh, to keep family engaged, and to just go back to some of the original “old school” resources of a paper and pencil.

Road Trip Games for the Car

Before embarking on a road trip (Or any travel for that matter), I try to pick up at least one or two new items. This often includes road trip games. Having something that is new 1.) buys time learning the game 2.) kills time enjoying the game 3.) and often gets reused because it was … well, enjoyable.

How to Play Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

We created a collection of Printable Scavenger Hunts for Kids, but one thing that was missing was a Road Trip Scavenger Hunt. Take a look at this printable game as well as Road Trip Games in the car for the kids.

Our road trip scavenger hunt is general enough, it can be played on most any adventure. You can make the game your own identifying your family’s rules and directions or follow these directions for how to a play road trip scavenger hunt.

Directions

Each player gets their own printable game board. Set the game for a certain amount of time (30 minutes, one hour, the entire trip.) As you travel down the road, check off items you see on your journey. You must identify the object out loud before checking it off. Once that object has been identified by the first player, the same object cannot be used to check off another players box. They will need to find that same object in another place. For example, if player A finds a deer they announce “deer” and check it off on their scavenger hunt printable. All other players must wait to find another deer before they can check it off. The first person to check off all their scavenger hunt boxes wins or the  person with the most checks at the end of the time limit, is the winner.

Scout Elf returns from the North Pole each evening and can be found in a new Elf location in the house in the money.
