how to make easy chocolate chip cookies recipe for kids with printable recipe infographic

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (chocolate chunks will work too)

Supplies

  • Oven
  • Bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixer or spoon
  • Scoop
  • Baking sheet(s)
  • Parchment paper

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F
  2. Sift together 2 3/4 cups flour, a tsp baking soda powder, & 1 tsp sodium salt into a mixing bowl.
  3. Cream butter with 2 large eggs, packed brown sugar, white sugar and 2 tsps vanilla extract until fluffy.
  4. In a large bowl, slowly add flour to butter mixture & gently fold in semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until combined.
  5. Scoop 1 1/2 tablespoons cookie dough balls on parchment lined baking tray.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes for a crispy edge and perfect center.
  7. Wait 2-3 minutes and move to a wire rack for cooling.

This delicious recipe batch yields about 30 of the best chocolate chip cookies. Store inside an airtight container to keep fresh and hold a yummy taste.

Can I make these chocolate chip cookies ahead?

Yes, this chewy chocolate chip cookies recipe is actually best if made ahead. That doesn’t mean you can’t whip up the recipe and immediately put the mixture in the oven. However, if you can let your mixed cookie dough chill for up to two hours before baking, your cookies will come out nice and fluffy texture. Chilling chocolate chip cookie dough solidifies the fat in the cookies. When baked, it actually prevents spread on a baking pan as the fat in chilled cookie dough takes longer to melt than room temperature fat.

How can I do with these chocolate chip cookies?

Are you afraid these cookies will go to waste? I mean, in our home, there is no such thing as wasted baked desserts. However, if this is not something your family would enjoy more than one bite, take a look at these ideas for your non-necessary cookies.

  • Thankful Thursday for Teachers
  • Cookies for Santa
  • Christmas Cookie Exchange
  • Gift for Neighbor
  • Family Baking Day
  • Family Bucket List Item

You can even gift your cookies with this adorable printable guide. It’s too cute of a poster not to gift with the baked cookies.

Make sure that once you print all the pieces and pictures, you take the time to laminate them. This is a great way to make this an activity that the kids can play with over and over again.

If you cycle activities in your house to keep them fresh and new, add them to a clear storage container so that you can see what is inside. This will save you time and sanity, so you don’t have to label the container or open the lid to dig inside.

List Supplies with bullets If they are needed.

cute box of sunshine diy care package free printable

Care packages are a great way to show someone you care, especially if they are going through a tough time. You can make a care package for anyone – a friend, family member, or even a stranger. They’re perfect all year long because kindness is always in season! Put together a box of sunshine for someone today with this easy DIY care package tutorial and fun care package printable!

DIY Care Package

A care package is a gift box full of fun items. This can be a parcel or cardboard box filled with activities, foods, trinkets, luxury items and/or thoughtful gifts. They are typically sent to a person through the mail service (FedEx, USPS, UPS) but can also be hand delivered.

A care package doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should be thoughtful and personal. There are so many different ways to make a care package. You can include anything you think the recipient would appreciate, whether it’s food, activities, or just some words of encouragement. The sky’s the limit!

What do I put in a care package?

What happens when an amazing, scrapbook-loving mother of five starts loosing kids to college? She transfers her scrapbook making to college care packages. Kristen, an amazing mother and friend, has created some of the best care package ideas I have ever seen. She starts with a theme and she gets rolling with incredible items to put inside the packages.

You don’t have to be a mother of five or a former scrap-booker to make amazing gift boxes. You simply have to know what to put inside a care package. To make your own care package, start by gathering all of the items you want to include. Try to stay on a theme and go from there. Of course, the theme can be “a few of my favorite things…” (meaning personalize it to yourself and the gift receiver.)

Here are some ideas to get you started. Choose a few items from each category to make a special treat the gift receiver is sure to love!

Food Items: non-perishable snacks, candy, gum, tea, coffee, favorite foods, healthy snacks

Activities and Entertainment: books, puzzles, board games, crafts, adult coloring books

Encouragement: positive affirmations, encouraging quotes, a handwritten note, bible verse cards

Trinkets: Mugs, bookmarks, framed photo, postcard with a sweet gift message, favorite items

Once you have your care box items, it’s time to put together your care package!

Care Package Ideas

If you’re still not sure what items you’d like to add to your care package, take a few minutes to think about the person you’re giving it to. For example, a care package for a college student during exams might have some fun snacks, maybe a soft blanket, and a calendar of positive sayings.

Do they love sewing? Maybe reading is more their thing. It could be that their favorite thing in the world is you and some photos, and handmade items would be the perfect choice.

Sweet treats and baked goods offer a taste of home during semester and final exams (add extra for the roommates!) In addition, college kids will appreciate a package offering a re-stockpile of essentials, school supplies, basic needs, and décor for the dorm room.

Military

Service members and/or military families will appreciate trinkets from home. Any family over seas or in a foreign country  can tell you there are things they miss form home. Military care package ideas can include a piece of home include candies, foods and treats found in your common grocery store. This can include men and women on deployment or military spouses and kids displaced by service in a foreign country.

Birthday

You say it’s your birthday! Celebrate the birthdays of family and friends with a special occasion gift box. This can be something sent over UPS or even hand delivered yourself. A birthday care package is an excellent time to add the recipients favorite things. If working on a budget, put a birthday gift box together with the help of fellow family and friends for a really large and special care package.

Holidays

Play into the theme of a the holidays and make sure to include some of the most random holidays too. Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and St. Patricks’ Day are all perfect times to send a care package. Toss in all the themed candies and snack items that fit the holiday theme.  For example, for Christmas include holiday lights, Christmas tree cakes, some of your favorite cookies, hot cocoa and maybe even an ugly Christmas sweater.

New Mom

A self care package is perfect for a new mom and young baby. In addition to a thoughtful gift for the new arrival, think of mom. What could you have used as a new mother? If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the kids in your neighborhood, consider this fun neighborhood scavenger hunt PDF!

Let’s get outdoors and begin our local treasure hunt!

What is a scavenger hunt?

A scavenger hunt is a game similar to a treasure hunt. Players collect or identify specific items, usually specified on a list or given in a series of clues. Players are given a list of items to find or collect. This collection can be a collection of similar things or a series of clue cards. There are two different types of scavenger hunt hunts…

  • Scavenger Hunt Checklist
  • Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards

A scavenger hunt can be casual or can be a timed race.  It can be played individually or with a team. There are a few examples of how to declare a winner in a scavenger hunt…

  • Man vs clock: Each player races to beat another players time.
  • Man vs Man: Multiple players go at the same time. The winner finishes the race first.
  • Team vs Team: Players work together to finish their scavenger hunt before the other team finishes first.

At the end of a scavenger treasure hunt there is a prize. The first player to find or collect all the items on the list or complete the rhyming riddles wins the game.  Examples of scavenger hunt prizes can include…

  • holiday gifts
  • birthday presents
  • party favors
  • small prizes
  • a series of items that lead to a larger clue (for example letters to unscramble)
  • candy

How to Prepare for a Scavenger Hunt

Decide on the area you will be searching. This could be your neighborhood, a local park, playground or even your own backyard. In this case, you’ll be doing the scavenger hunt in your neighborhood and by foot or car depending on your area.

Put together clues in the form of a checklist or clue cards. For example, in a scavenger hunt checklist, make a list of items for the players to find or collect. The list can be as simple or complex as you like. For example, at a Safari Themed Party, players might collect different animals found in the jungle that are hiding in the party venue.

If you are created ideas for scavenger hunt clues for kids, you want to have a consecutive list of places you want the kids to go. Then you offer clues so that they find that location.

neighborhood scavenger hunt clue card ideas

An example of a scavenger hunt clue for kids is…

Check out the pathway on the side of the street. On the concrete is a clue for you to meet.

Start the town scavenger hunt. Print out the cards or checklist, and choose the area of the neighborhood you’ll be working in.

What’s in this Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt?

For this neighborhood scavenger hunt printable set, there are actually two types of neighborhood scavenger hunt ideas to choose from: A checklist and rhyming riddles clue cards.

The first neighborhood treasure hunt is more descriptive and great for older kids or teenagers that can read and solve riddles. This could be used on your street or using a car scavenger hunt for a larger area. Second, there is also a list of items for younger kids.  This would be used as a walking scavenger hunt and kids check off the list of items on their visual list.

Clue Cards

Neighborhood scavenger hunt for adults or teens or older kids

This scavenger hunt is great for older children, teens or even adults. Use rhyming riddles and go on a neighborhood walk scavenger hunt on foot or driving scavenger hunt as you locate different clues and ultimately find your prize.

To get started, cut the rhyming clue cards apart. Choose the scavenger hunt clue cards that are best for your neighborhood and plan your order. If you wish, you can add a number to the back of the card for ordering.

Since you are in a larger area, such as a neighborhood, create a boundary where clues can be found. To keep the clues in a larger area, write your own clues on the back. For example, use hints like this is at a house to the left of yours. This is at a flower bush four driveways from yours. Hide your cards in the appropriate spot but save the first card to start the hunt. You can play foot, bicycle, golf cart or car!

In our printable set, you’ll also find a page full of do not touch signs! These signs are great for when you don’t want anyone messing up your scavenger hunt and picking up a clue card before players have gotten to that riddle.

Checklist

easy neighborhood scavenger hunt for kids

The second photo scavenger hunt is ideal for preschoolers or younger children and kids. In this scavenger hunt list, participants can see the picture and from there they can look for the item in the picture. The scavenger hunt includes 16 items.

Example neighborhood checklist items include…

  • sprinkler
  • dog
  • flower
  • mailbox
  • airplane
  • stop sign

Once an items is found, you can use a circle sticker and cover the item (like these on Amazon) or just add a circle or X. This is not a checklist neighborhood hunt where you pick up the item – the neighbor might not like you carrying their dog home. LOL.

Best Tips for Having Scavenger Hunt

Best Tips for Having Scavenger Hunt

If you’ve never thrown a neighborhood scavenger hunt for kids, then you may not know what to expect. Enjoy some of the best tips for having a scavenger hunt for kids, teens, or even adults!

Have Fun with It

Have a prize for the winner! This could be something as simple as a certificate, bragging rights, or a small prize. You could even have money along the way if playing with teens or adults (who act like kids!)

Make it a competition!

See who can complete the scavenger hunt the fastest. Part of the fun is seeing who can complete the scavenger hunt the fastest! You can do man verses time, team verses team or man verses man depending on how many players and how much time you have.

Work as a Team

Make it a team effort! Put people into teams and see which team can find all the items on the list first. Or give each team member a different row (if doing the checklist) or have an order of riddles children have to solve if doing the 20 rhyming clue cards. You make the rules based on your audience, personalities and the number of players.

End with a Treat

After the scavenger hunt, have a little something for everyone. This could be a treat, prize or even just some fun conversation – aka polite bragging rights. Scavenger hunts are a great way to bring people together, get to know your neighbors or act as ice breaks for new friends!
