Planning a neighborhood scavenger hunt is a great way to get kids moving and interacting with their community and landmarks while getting to know the people and places around them. We dare you to try to not love this town scavenger hunt!

Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt Printable

Looking for a fun way to explore your neighborhood with the kids? Check out this neighborhood scavenger hunt printable. This printable is a great idea for teens, tweens, or kids. If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the kids in your neighborhood, consider this fun neighborhood scavenger hunt PDF!

Let’s get outdoors and begin our local treasure hunt!

What is a scavenger hunt?

A scavenger hunt is a game similar to a treasure hunt. Players collect or identify specific items, usually specified on a list or given in a series of clues. Players are given a list of items to find or collect. This collection can be a collection of similar things or a series of clue cards. There are two different types of scavenger hunt hunts…

  • Scavenger Hunt Checklist
  • Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards

A scavenger hunt can be casual or can be a timed race.  It can be played individually or with a team. There are a few examples of how to declare a winner in a scavenger hunt…

  • Man vs clock: Each player races to beat another players time.
  • Man vs Man: Multiple players go at the same time. The winner finishes the race first.
  • Team vs Team: Players work together to finish their scavenger hunt before the other team finishes first.

At the end of a scavenger treasure hunt there is a prize. The first player to find or collect all the items on the list or complete the rhyming riddles wins the game.  Examples of scavenger hunt prizes can include…

  • holiday gifts
  • birthday presents
  • party favors
  • small prizes
  • a series of items that lead to a larger clue (for example letters to unscramble)
  • candy

How to Prepare for a Scavenger Hunt

Decide on the area you will be searching. This could be your neighborhood, a local park, playground or even your own backyard. In this case, you’ll be doing the scavenger hunt in your neighborhood and by foot or car depending on your area.

Put together clues in the form of a checklist or clue cards. For example, in a scavenger hunt checklist, make a list of items for the players to find or collect. The list can be as simple or complex as you like. For example, at a Safari Themed Party, players might collect different animals found in the jungle that are hiding in the party venue.

If you are created ideas for scavenger hunt clues for kids, you want to have a consecutive list of places you want the kids to go. Then you offer clues so that they find that location.

neighborhood scavenger hunt clue card ideas

An example of a scavenger hunt clue for kids is…

Check out the pathway on the side of the street. On the concrete is a clue for you to meet.

Start the town scavenger hunt. Print out the cards or checklist, and choose the area of the neighborhood you’ll be working in.

What’s in this Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt?

For this neighborhood scavenger hunt printable set, there are actually two types of neighborhood scavenger hunt ideas to choose from: A checklist and rhyming riddles clue cards.

The first neighborhood treasure hunt is more descriptive and great for older kids or teenagers that can read and solve riddles. This could be used on your street or using a car scavenger hunt for a larger area. Second, there is also a list of items for younger kids.  This would be used as a walking scavenger hunt and kids check off the list of items on their visual list.

Clue Cards

Neighborhood scavenger hunt for adults or teens or older kids

This scavenger hunt is great for older children, teens or even adults. Use rhyming riddles and go on a neighborhood walk scavenger hunt on foot or driving scavenger hunt as you locate different clues and ultimately find your prize.

To get started, cut the rhyming clue cards apart. Choose the scavenger hunt clue cards that are best for your neighborhood and plan your order. If you wish, you can add a number to the back of the card for ordering.

Since you are in a larger area, such as a neighborhood, create a boundary where clues can be found. To keep the clues in a larger area, write your own clues on the back. For example, use hints like this is at a house to the left of yours. This is at a flower bush four driveways from yours. Hide your cards in the appropriate spot but save the first card to start the hunt. You can play foot, bicycle, golf cart or car!

In our printable set, you’ll also find a page full of do not touch signs! These signs are great for when you don’t want anyone messing up your scavenger hunt and picking up a clue card before players have gotten to that riddle.

Checklist

easy neighborhood scavenger hunt for kids

The second photo scavenger hunt is ideal for preschoolers or younger children and kids. In this scavenger hunt list, participants can see the picture and from there they can look for the item in the picture. The scavenger hunt includes 16 items.

Example neighborhood checklist items include…

  • sprinkler
  • dog
  • flower
  • mailbox
  • airplane
  • stop sign

Once an items is found, you can use a circle sticker and cover the item (like these on Amazon) or just add a circle or X. This is not a checklist neighborhood hunt where you pick up the item – the neighbor might not like you carrying their dog home. LOL.

Best Tips for Having Scavenger Hunt

Best Tips for Having Scavenger Hunt

If you’ve never thrown a neighborhood scavenger hunt for kids, then you may not know what to expect. Enjoy some of the best tips for having a scavenger hunt for kids, teens, or even adults!

Have Fun with It

Have a prize for the winner! This could be something as simple as a certificate, bragging rights, or a small prize. You could even have money along the way if playing with teens or adults (who act like kids!)

Make it a competition!

See who can complete the scavenger hunt the fastest. Part of the fun is seeing who can complete the scavenger hunt the fastest! You can do man verses time, team verses team or man verses man depending on how many players and how much time you have.

Work as a Team

Make it a team effort! Put people into teams and see which team can find all the items on the list first. Or give each team member a different row (if doing the checklist) or have an order of riddles children have to solve if doing the 20 rhyming clue cards. You make the rules based on your audience, personalities and the number of players.

End with a Treat

After the scavenger hunt, have a little something for everyone. This could be a treat, prize or even just some fun conversation – aka polite bragging rights. Scavenger hunts are a great way to bring people together, get to know your neighbors or act as ice breaks for new friends!

He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Year-round Printable Scavenger Hunts for Kids

I’ve loved scavenger hunts since I was a kid. Well, I still love them! Some of my best memories are from scavenger hunts with family and friends. They got me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to meet new people. Plus, I love a good challenge and a prize, so I always gave my all to win the hunt! Scavenger hunts are amazing ice breakers for group scenarios, like at camp or a birthday party. Or, you can make a special scavenger hunt for a loved one to show them how much you care!

We had so much fun gathering the best printable scavenger hunts for kids from all over the internet. Whether you’re looking for a scavenger hunt at home or an outdoor scavenger hunt for kids, we’ve got a scavenger hunt for every season and occasion. Happy hunting!

What is a Scavenger Hunt?

A scavenger hunt is an engaging game played by children (and adults, too!) Every scavenger hunt begins with a list of objects to find and riddles or clues to help the players locate the items. To play the game, divide the players into at least 2 teams and give the teams or individual players copies of the list of clues. A scavenger hunt is similar to a treasure hunt in that there are clues to solve and at the end is typically a scavenger hunt prize or present.

What are the Scavenger Hunt Rules?

Scavenger hunts can be played individually or in groups — either way, whoever finishes first wins! There are two types of hunts. Hunts can be consecutive where a team or individuals are given the first clue which leads to the second, third, fourth, and so on. Alternatively, hunts can be done using a checklist where the full list of “must do’s” are provided at the beginning. Provide players with a writing utensil, and they can check off their finds as they go!

Individual Scavenger Hunts

Individual scavenger hunts are a great way to busy a child or give them individual gifts on a special day. At each stopping point, before the next scavenger hunt riddle clue is given, gift your child a piece of their larger present. You can do this on birthday or even collecting their Back to School Supplies. Yes, you can do a scavenger hunt at home to make even Back to School Supplies exciting!

To begin, supply the player with the first scavenger hunt clue. The first riddle will lead them to the second. The second will lead them to the third clue and so on until the scavenger hunt is over. You can also provide a scavenger hunt checklist where the entire list must be completed before a prize is given.

Group Scavenger Hunts

Group scavenger hunts are perfect for sleepovers, lock-ins, class parties, and more. Even adults can find their inner child and have fun challenging each other in outdoor venues like parks, concerts, the mall, or in a city hunt challenge around town.

Either supply your groups with a scavenger hunts riddle and clue #1 or provide them a list of things to get on a piece of paper. This list is their checklist and must be completed in order to declare a winner. A checklist Scavenger Hunt is typically easier for large groups, so you don’t have to go around hiding multiple sets of clues for each team.

Cheap Birthday Party Ideas for Those on a Budget

Having a birthday party on a budget isn’t always easy, but it’s possible! Finding low cost party ideas just takes a little time and effort. If you don’t have the time or even if you don’t want to put in the effort, then these tips are for you! Sacrifice on the wallet but not the fun!

cheap birthday party ideas low-cost party for kids and adults

Birthday celebrations can be expensive. But there are cheap and inexpensive ways to make an adults’ or kid’s birthday fun. These fun ideas are affordable and easy to set up for friends and family of any age.

I’m going to walk you through having a fun birthday party on the budget. From party ideas to activities, you will be able to put together an amazing party and all on a budget!

How to have a birthday party on a budget

Are you looking to celebrate a birthday but don’t want to spend a lot of money? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey, the average person spends about $600 on their birthday celebrations. But there’s no need to break the bank just to have a good time.

Cheap birthday parties for those on a budget can still turn out great. You really just have to focus on the areas that you want to spend money on and the other areas you can do on a budget! For example, you may want to go all out on the cake, but save money on the gifts. With a little bit of creativity, you can still have a fantastic birthday party without blowing your budget.

Here are some tips for cheap birthday party ideas:

Set a budget and stick to it

This is probably the most important tip when it comes to having a child’s birthday party on a budget. Decide how much you’re willing or able to spend beforehand, and then make sure all of your decisions reflect that budget. Start with the item that is most important to you. One that you are not willing to spend less on. Start there and then start researching the rest of the party ideas.

Get creative with the guest list

Instead of inviting everyone you know, be selective about who you invite. You can still have a great time with fewer people in attendance. Plus, this will allow you to focus your spending on making sure those who do attend have an amazing time. The individuals that were not invited to this party can be guests for another occasion.

DIY as much as possible

Another great way to save money is by doing things yourself instead of hiring someone else to do them for you. For example, if you’re good at baking, why not make your own cake instead of buying one? Or if you’re crafty, you could make your own invitations or decorations instead of buying them from a store. Pinterest and bloggers provide a lot of ideas for DIY party favors, printable banners, and even low-cost themed birthday party ideas.

Think outside the box when it comes to activities

Just because there’s no money for entertainment doesn’t mean your guests will be bored. There are plenty of fun games and activities that don’t cost anything to play. For example, charades, scavenger hunts, karaoke and printable themed party games are all great options that are sure to keep your guests happy and entertained.

Save on the Venue

In addition to thinking outside the box for birthday party activities, also think outside the box for the party room. Public, national, and local parks are often affordable places. Think of all the places friends have had parties. Now cross those ideas off. Why, because they are popular and popular means there is an up charge in cost – supply vs demand.  This past year, we found a small fish tank aquarium. It had an outdoor place for the kids to play and it might have been the best, most affordable party we ever had. Parents raved about the venue and no one had every been there before. By finding something that was not “common” we saved a lot. If the venue place is still too much, have a party at your home or in your backyard.

Having a birthday party on a budget is totally possible, you just need to get creative! By following these low-cost party tips, you can throw an amazing bash without breaking the bank in the process!

What activities do children like to do on their birthdays?

Still looking for inexpensive birthday party ideas? Birthdays are a special time for kids. It’s a day when they get to feel extra special and loved. Having a few family-only birthday traditions are a great way to recognize the guest of honor. If you’re looking for some fun ideas to make your child’s birthday even more special, look no further!

Here are some great low cost party ideas for celebrating birthdays with kids. Create these fun birthday ideas with a party of two to a party of 30!

Get some yummy food and drinks and have a picnic lunch outside! This is a great way to enjoy the nice weather and have some quality time with your child. Find a unique place to eat like on top of a big rock in the middle of a creek or downtown in the city with tall buildings.

Make a cake

Let your child help you make their birthday cake! Make your own DIY cake mix or pick up a boxed mix. They’ll love being able to help out and will be so excited to eat their creation. You can even let them make their own miniature cake (or cupcake) and have a larger cake for the family to share. This can be done with themed party food or party snacks too.

A classic birthday treat! Kids will love being able to pick out their favorite flavor and topping combination. Plus, it’s a great way to cool down on a hot day. Make your very own ice cream party shop.

Kids Party Games

I mentioned earlier, saving money on the things you can. Decide what’s most important to you, then save on the rest. Having a birthday party allows your child to feel important. It puts them at the center of attention.  The goal is a fun birthday party that gives your child self affirmation and positive feelings of oneself.

Now that you have honored your child with the special occasion, honor your guests with fun. One of the most expensive items for birthday parties, is the entertainment. Entertainment is a form of activity that holds the attention and interest of an audience or gives pleasure and delight. We have many low cost party ideas for entertainment but one of the best ways to offer affordable entertainment is through Kids’ birthday party games. Our low-cost printable games offer a list of party game instructions and a supply list so you are organized with the party entertainment.

What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving.
