What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD

Online you can find ENDLESS Elf on the Shelf Accessories, Books, Games and Toys.

Have fun making this celebratory Birthday Cake-Scented Homemade Playdough using your pantry ingredients. Play-doh recipe and playdough video tutorial below.

Birthday Cake-Scented Homemade Playdough

You likely have seen many of our Homemade Playdough recipes. We have an Essential Oils Playdough Recipe , many love our Scented JELL-O Playdough Recipe, and you might have enjoyed our Finding Dory Homemade Playdough. Whatever your blend, we have a fun idea to celebrate. In fact, today is my sweet girl’s birthday, so this recipe is with the inspiration of her –  Birthday Cake-Scented Homemade Playdough.

Happy birthday sweet girl!

Birthday Cake-Scented Homemade Playdough

Supplies:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • Funfetti sprinkles
  • Birthday candles
  • Sugared flowers
  • Cupcake wrappers

Directions:

  1. Pour the water, oil and vanilla extract into a Dutch oven or large sauce pan and whisk to combine. Add the flour, salt and cream of tartar and stir until you work out all of the flour lumps.
  2. Continue to stir over medium heat until a stiff ball of dough forms (this normally takes about 3-4 minutes). It will look like a firm ball of mashed potatoes.
  3. Remove the dough from the heat and place on a level workspace for easier kneading. Knead for several minutes or until the playdough is soft and smooth. Enjoy the sweet aroma of vanilla birthday cake!
  4. This birthday cake-scented Playdough can be shaped into mini cakes or cupcakes. Decorate with sprinkles, candles and sugared flowers for hours of fun and creative bakery fun!
  5. Enjoy and Happy Birthday!

Don’t forget Frugal Coupon Living has a fun You Tube Video on How to Make Homemade Playdough. The video below does not add the vanilla extract, but you can add it on your own. Also consider using Essential Oils like this Essential Oils Playdough Recipe

Turkey Cheese Sticks – Kids Food Craft

We had so much fun with the Fall Ice Cream Cone Teepees and our Thanksgiving Kids Food Crafts, that we wanted to do a non “food” item for schools that do not allow food brought in from the outside that isn’t prepackaged. This is another excellent fall idea for a classroom or large group. It is so easy and  the kids will love this fall food craft.

Supplies:

  • Handi Snacks Premium
  • Orange and Red Card Stock
  • Medium and Small Plastic Googly Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue/Hot Glue Gun

Directions:

  1. Cut your orange paper into the following: 6 small diamonds for the turkey beaks, 12 small turkey legs.
  2. Cut your red paper into the following: 6 wattles (the red thing that hangs from a turkeys chin).
  3. Hot glue the wattle onto the backside of the cheese compartment.
  4. Hot glue one small and one medium eye onto the back top edge above the cheese compartment.
  5. Now fold your diamond in half and hot glue right on top of the wattle.
  6. Then hot glue the paper legs onto the back of the cracker compartment.
