Thirteen clean and fun Dollar Tree April Fools pranks from as low as $20 – Easy April Fools Day prank ideas for kids from the Dollar Store.

Dollar Tree April Fools Pranks

13 Dollar Tree April Fools Pranks

Every April 1, April Fools’ Day is an annual celebration full of practical jokes. These jokes can have a wide range of silliness form hoaxes to playful amusement. We like to focus on the later, making sure all parties of the prank find it fun and laughable. In an effort to prepare for April Fools’ Day this year, my girls and I went up and down the aisles of the Dollar Store to find some of the most creative (and clean) Dollar Tree April Fools Pranks for Kids. This pranks can be done on kids or the kids can become involved pranking parents or even other siblings.

Also check out our April Fools Ideas for the Kitchen, Home and Office. We also have plenty of fun Free April Fools Day printables for kids and adults. Have fun, be kind!

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 1: Sponge Cakes

Only two items are needed for this April Fool’s Day Prank for the kids. We tricked my husband as his birthday had just occurred when we made our sponge cake. At the Dollar Tree pick up a sponge and we found a package of Funfetti Pillsbury Icing with sprinkles. The trickiest part was not having the sponge show through. I would suggest the lightest sponge you can find (ours was dark blue.) I also suggest icing the cube, freezing it for about five minutes, icing it again, freezing again. My daughter was very patient with it, it was about four times she took it in and out of the freezer until it looked like a mini cake. Supplies include a sponge, icing, sprinkles, scissors and a butter knife.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 2: Plastic Wrap Shampoo

This is good for a container of bath wash, shampoo or conditioner. Take some plastic wrap and seal under the cap. When your family member tries to squeeze the liquid out of the bottle, it will not come out. This might be an April Fools prank you already have on hand and don’t have to purchase! Supplies include plastic wrap, and shampoo/conditioner/body wash.

Price: $2 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 3: Kraft Mac and Cheese Juice

For this kids April Fool’s Day Prank you will need powdered Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.  My frugal self pulled out the pasta and made it for the kids later in the week – who doesn’t love pasta with butter? It was easy to make our April Fool’s Day juice. I was amazed how real this looked. When I poured the powder in our pitcher, I was sure that it wasn’t going to fool anyone but it looked just like freshly squeezed orange juice with pulp. You can sift out some of the top if you feel it looks like too much pulp. Gross… but so much fun! Supplies include powdered mac and cheese, water, and a pitcher.

Price: $1

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 4: Pop Corn

We picked up a popcorn container and a can of corn for this April Fools Day fun! After you ask the kids if they want popcorn, pour a can of corn in the cup and see their reaction! Silly but fun. Supplies include a popcorn container, a can opener and canned corn.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 5: Brown Es Brownies

Construction paper, a pan and Reynolds Aluminum Foil are all that is needed for this Brown-Es April Fool’s Day brownie prank!  I took brown construction paper and layered it on top of each other. I then drew an E on the top piece of paper with a pencil. I quickly cut out six Es in one cut. On the top of the pan, my girls wrote a note to their dad – “Brownies, Love Lucy and Bella.” He fell for it after dinner! Laughs from all of us! Supplies include brown construction paper, scissors, a baking tray, aluminum foil and a pencil.

Price: $1 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 6: JELL-O Punch

Full disclosure. Our Dollar Tree did not have powdered JELL-O so we had to grab four of the pre-made individual packs. Four filled up this entire mason jar cup To fill the cup, we melted on the stove-top until it was runny (no chunks).  We pour our melted JELL-O in a mug, added a draw and put it in the fridge. It solidified just fine. After the pranks pilled up, my husband did not fall for this one but he also is not the first to grab a mug of juice out of the refrigerator.  This is a better prank saved for the kids! Supplies include JELL-O (plus ingredients), a mug, and a straw.

Price: $1 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 7: Frozen Cereal

There are a few option to this cereal prank. You can freeze a layer of ice in a bowl or you can freeze the milk, spoon and cereal in the bowl.  We added a layer of water to the bowl about 2/3 up. We then frozen the layer of water. When I served the cereal and milk, just a litter was on the top layer so when you went to dig your spoon in the bowl, you hit a solid surface! Supplies include a cereal bowl, spoon, milk, cereal and water. You might have everything you need for this April Fool’s Day breakfast prank making this as low as $0!

Price: $1 – $4

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 8: Thin Mint OREOs

The kids loved making these Thin Mint OREOs and I have to admit, they smelled so good! The prank level of how hard it was, was low, but you have to make sure you keep it clean. Otherwise it clearly is not an OREO. I also think it would work better with one of those peel back OREO containers. Using a small bag, we had to open the bag and it doesn’t make it too appealing to start eating OREOs from an already open bag. If it was the peel back container, it would be easy to lay them in the cupboard until someone went in the pantry and served themselves. Supplies include cookies, toothpaste and a butter knife.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 9: Rock Filled Shoes

So don’t do this prank when you are rushing out the door. No fun having a child clean up rocks and getting their shoes on ten minutes before school starts. Supplies include shoes with rocks, Pony Beads, marbles, toilet paper, or whatever!

Price: $1

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 10: Caramel Ice Cream Parfait

I love this Dollar Tree prank because you can make a practical joke serving ice cream with caramel sauce but it isn’t something that you have to toss after the prank is done. In fact, my kids were thrilled to be eating the mashed potatoes with gravy! It was just as much of a treat. All you need for supplies are instant mash (the ingredients like butter and water) and gravy sauce. We picked up the spoon and glass at The Dollar Tree but they were not needed because you can use your own utensils and parfait glass.

Price: $2 – $4

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 11: Spider Escape

This prank is playful and easy. Grab a paper cup and put on this caution note “Warning… huge, aggressive spider under cup. Do not lift!” Then tear the cup as if this aggressive spider escaped. Fun not only for the home but maybe for a common room in an office. If not for someone to fall for, at least for someone to get a small chuckle. Supplies include a cup, marker, and Post-it note.

Price: $1 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 12: Remote Control Trick

Dad is sure to fall for this one, especially when the big game is on. Cover the remote control sensor with Scotch Tape. Be sure to draw a black circle where the sensor is completely blocking the transmission. How many times do you think he will change the batteries? Supplies include tape, a permanent marker and of course, a remote control.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 13: Bar Soap Trick

For this soap prank, you cover bar soap in clear nail polish. When you go to wash your hands, the soap will not create suds causing the hand washer to keep trying to later up the bar. This worked in our home! Supplies include bar soap and clear nail polish.

Price: $2

Family Birthday Celebrations – How to Celebrate Every Member!

Looking for fun birthday ideas? Make each and every family member feel special on their birthday with these Family Birthday Celebrations. These creative kids birthday ideas might just become your family’s new favorite traditions!

Family Birthday Celebrations

Family Birthday Celebrations

Our family used to have more elaborate birthday celebrations for our kids. As the years have gone by and our family headcount has gone up, the kids’ birthday celebrations have become more simplified. Our girls were 7 and 8 when their younger brother came and 8 and 9 when their additional brothers (twins) came, so it was hard to give them the celebration they deserved with all the craziness going on. That being said, there were years that it was easy (and affordable) to throw them a kids birthday party with friends. They have gotten older, and less interested, and I have been researching fun birthday ideas to make them feel loved at home without spending hundreds of dollars.

I’ve rounded up the best fun birthday ideas below to make your younger kids, your teens, or even your spouse feel special on their big day!

Make sure you get all the way to the bottom of this post — we have a really creative away for you to pay it forward and for you to give back to others each and every birthday! Such a wonderful lesson for your kids. Plus, it comes with a free printable!

Snow Day Ideas

20 Snow Day Ideas on Frugal Coupon Living

We recently moved from Florida to the DC area and snow is new to us. Other than building the snowmen, making a snow angel and sledding down a hill, I wanted to find alternative ways for my kids to have fun in this odd, little white substance. Take a look at these 20 Uses for Snow to have a list of Snow Day Ideas on your next school day off!

How to Make An Igloo

Have fun making an ice castle with step by step tutorial, how to make an igloo out of snow.

Photo directions of How to Make An Igloo using ice blocks

This outdoor igloo with ice blocks took about 3 days and a lot of patience. It also used about 40 meatloaf pans (just grab at the Dollar Store or your local grocery store.) Lay out your pans with water and a few drops of food coloring. Once the ice hardens, pop the ice out of the pans and form your igloo shape.

Once you get the shape of your ice igloo, fill in the cracks with snow. Continue to make molds, let the harden and add more ice bricks to your igloo. Keep adding snow in the racks as your cement. Repeat the process until you have an igloo made out of snow and ice. When you are finish, add alight inside at night for a magic light display.

Looking to start off the new year on the right foot? Got an air fryer as a gift over the holidays and curious as to what you can make with it? Take a look at these crave-worthy, easy air fryer recipes for beginners. Conveniently enjoy healthy recipes that are juicy on the inside, with the perfect texture of crispy on the outside!

Easy Air Fryer Recipes for Beginners

Easy Air Fryer Recipes for Beginners

During Christmas 2017, I jumped on the Instant Pot bandwagon only to use it maybe twice. Ever. It’s a great appliance, but I just find myself loving the slow cooked goodness of the Crock-pot. This past Christmas, I had every intention to jump on the air fryer bandwagon too, but as the mom of a family of seven, I could not find a good deal on a fryer big enough for our family (if you are a large family, PLEASE let me know the air fryer that is best for a family this large!) So despite my cart still holding my air fryer, I began to get together some easy recipes for our family. After all, a girl can dream — isn’t that what Pinterest is for?

Healthy Air Fryer Recipes

There were so many recipes I was excited about that were easy and great for beginners. Did you know there’s a slew of air fryer pizza recipes out there? Not to mention air fryer salmon recipes? Yum! I was so inspired by a food blogger who even made eggplant dip in the air fryer! I also was inspired by all the air fryer chicken recipes, air fryer wings to chicken nuggets. And for my veggie lovers, air fryer Brussels sprouts! And this isn’t even beginning to scrape the surface of the air fryer dinner recipes your appliance can make!

Is the Air Fryer healthier than the oven?

The recent spike in popularity for the air fryer naturally prompts the debate of “air fryer vs oven”. While using the air fryer is far healthier than deep frying the traditional way, like using your air fryer to make french fries or fried chicken instead of deep frying, the air fryer unit simply gets so hot that it gets food super crispy without having to add any oil. So, your air fryer is basically like an oven, but way hotter! This means it’s not necessarily any healthier than using your oven. That being said, the air fryer’s heat capability makes it far more efficient to create delicious “fried” dishes without having to wait forever for them to get crispy. As a busy mom, my air fryer has quickly become my favorite appliance for creating delicious dishes my family loves in way less time!

Enjoy all these recipes and let me know your family’s favorite!

Air Fryer Times & Temps Cheat Sheet

First of all, if you’re new to the air fryer, this Air Fryer Cheat Sheet is a must have. It’s got all the info you need to make amazing air fryer dinner recipes  in one spot. I keep a copy of these Air Fryer Tips in my Recipe Binder. (Another suggestion would be to laminate this cheat sheet and keep it beside your air fryer. Laminating this air fryer tip guide will keep it clean and make it easy to wipe any kitchen mess off.)

AIR FRYER CHEAT SHEET DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
We also provide an easy set of three – Instant Pot, Air Fryer and Baking Hack cheat sheets all in one! See more in our Baking Hacks and Tips.

You could also grab this magnetic Air Fryer Cheat Sheet to keep it on the side of your air fryer at all times!

Five Air Fryer Accessories

Beyond that Air Fryer Hack Sheet, you will also want to invest in these Air Fryer Accessories.

First, you’ll need this Evo Oil Sprayer Bottle for more than your Air Fryer. Mine is practically attached at the hip when I’m in the kitchen. It’s refillable, so you can use it with any brand of olive oil you have on hand.

Second, this digital internal temp reader is the best way to test if your food is ready. This is a must in the kitchen, not just for the air fryer.

Third, I am all for easy clean up. I much prefer cooking and letting someone else clean up my mess, unless it fits in the dishwasher! These Air Fryer Liners will keep the mess under control. You’re welcome in advance!

Fourth, get something to cut potatoes into waffle fries or string fries. Air fryers are the absolute best way to get your french fry fix without all the extra calories! Here’s a commercial grade french fry cutter, a hand held french fry cutter, and the potato cage of cutting (trust me, you’re going to want to check this one out!)

Finally, a good pair of tongs are a must in my kitchen. These are hands down the BEST tongs ever — OXO Good Grips 9-Inch Locking Tongs with Nylon Heads. They store so well because of how they lock (as in, they won’t get your drawer stuck!)

Reading Corner Ideas. Kid’s reading pods to inspire imagination and creativity; home reading nooks to provide comfort and rest.

Creative Reading Corner Ideas

Creative Kids Reading Corner Ideas for the Home

My girls are excellent readers. Growing up, this was not true of me. I hated to read. This lead me to the conclusion that they got some of this love through their environment over their genetics. I did a few things to “manipulate” good readers including creating an environment that embraced reading. From the time they were very young, I rarely said no buying them a book. I shopped wisely, but when a book was finished, I often purchased a new one. This was especially true when they began reading chapter books and series. This grew and grew our library to the point where most of our shelves are strewn with books. In fact, my son’s bedroom is a library. I love this as he is only two years old and falls asleep surrounded by books.

Buying Used Books

I have been able to shop frugally for my girls. Often, I purchase used books from Thrift Books or, my favorite, Better World Books. These books come in decent conditions.  Sometimes they are a used library book or a book from a home. Either condition, doesn’t matter to me. It’s not the outside of the book, it’s the journey they go on inside.

When my girls were young and just beginning to read, I gave them the option to either go straight to sleep or to read in their bed another hour. I left a clock in their room and provided book lights if they chose the later. One of our favorite books to get started on reading was Bob Books. Currently, they are in 3rd and 5th grade and I still provide this same rule. Go to bed or read until (the time I provide.)

Creative Kids Reading Corner Ideas

Doing a few of these things – providing books, providing time, and providing a space – as created girls who love to read and are very good at reading. They are creative, young ladies, and I attribute it to these resources.

To provide your own enjoyable reading environment, take a look at some of these Creative Kids Reading Corner Ideas for the Home to create your very own young readers in the home.
