Thanksgiving is a holiday that many people look forward to every year. It’s a time to spend with loved ones, enjoy a delicious meal, and give thanks for all the blessings in life. However, with the stress of planning and preparing for the big day, it can be easy to forget about the importance of conversation. That’s why having some Thanksgiving Conversation Starters on hand can be helpful in making the day more enjoyable.

Starting a conversation can be intimidating, especially when you’re surrounded by friends and family members with different opinions and perspectives. However, with the right questions, you can create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere that encourages everyone to participate in thoughtful discussions. Whether you’re looking to break the ice with distant relatives or deepen your connections with loved ones, there are plenty of Friendsgiving conversation starters to choose from.

From lighthearted topics like favorite Thanksgiving dishes to more serious discussions about gratitude and family traditions, there are endless possibilities for conversation on Thanksgiving. By taking the time to prepare some conversation starters ahead of time, you can ensure that everyone feels included and engaged in the festivities.

Before we begin, let’s focus on the importance of gratitude and why with thought-provoking questions, gratitude can be the center of our conversation around the holiday dinner table.

Understanding Gratitude

Gratitude is an essential element that leads to happiness and fulfillment. It is a feeling of appreciation for what one has and the people around them. Thanksgiving is a time of the year when people express gratitude for the blessings in their lives. However, it can be challenging to start a conversation about gratitude, especially with friends and family who have different opinions and personalities.

The Science of Gratitude

Gratitude is a positive emotion that is expressed when someone acknowledges the goodness in their life. According to research, gratitude is associated with increased happiness, better physical health, and improved relationships. In fact, studies have shown that people who practice gratitude regularly experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety and have a stronger immune system.

Gratitude works by changing the way the brain processes information. When someone expresses gratitude, it activates the brain’s reward center, which releases dopamine and other feel-good chemicals. This creates a positive feedback loop that reinforces the behavior and makes it easier to feel grateful in the future.

Benefits of Gratitude

Gratitude is not only good for mental and physical health, but it also has a positive impact on relationships. People who express gratitude are more likely to have stronger and more satisfying relationships with others. This is because gratitude helps people focus on the positive aspects of their relationships and appreciate the efforts of others.

In addition, gratitude can improve productivity and performance. Studies have shown that employees who feel appreciated and valued are more motivated and engaged in their work. This leads to better job satisfaction and higher levels of productivity.

Overall, practicing gratitude is a simple but effective way to improve mental and physical health, strengthen relationships, and increase productivity. By taking the time to acknowledge the good things in life, people can experience a range of benefits that can improve their overall well-being.

Gratitude Conversation Starters for Thanksgiving

Expressing gratitude is an essential part of Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving celebrations. It is an opportunity to reflect on the positive aspects of life and appreciate the people around us. However, sometimes it can be challenging to initiate a conversation about gratitude around the Thanksgiving table. Here are some conversation starters that can help make expressing gratitude easier and play a great role as Thanksgiving icebreakers.

For Family Gatherings

  • What is one thing you are thankful for this year?
  • Who is someone in this room that you are grateful for, and why?
  • What is one tradition that we have as a family that you appreciate?
  • What is one memory from this year that you are grateful for?
  • What is your favorite Thanksgiving tradition?
  • What’s the best gift you received this year?

For Friendsgiving

  • What is something you appreciate about our friendship?
  • Who is someone outside of this group that you are grateful for, and why?
  • What is one thing that you are thankful for that happened this year?
  • What is one experience that we shared this year that you are grateful for?
  • What’s your favorite way to use turkey leftovers?

For Children’s Party

  • What is one thing you learned this year that you are thankful for?
  • Who is someone that you are grateful for, and why?
  • What is one activity that you enjoy doing that makes you happy?
  • What is one thing that you are looking forward to in the future?
  • Tell a Thanksgiving joke that makes you laugh.
  • What’s your favorite float in the Thanksgiving day parade?

Remember that expressing gratitude is not limited to Thanksgiving day. It is something that can be practiced every day. These conversation starters are just a few ways to start expressing gratitude and appreciation.

Enhancing Gratitude Conversations

Gratitude conversations can be a powerful way to connect with others and cultivate a sense of appreciation and thankfulness. However, not all conversations are created equal. To make the most out of your gratitude conversations this Thanksgiving, consider the following tips and techniques.

Tips for Meaningful Conversations

  1. Start with a positive tone: Begin the conversation on a positive note by expressing gratitude for the person you are speaking with or for something that you both appreciate.
  2. Ask open-ended questions: Instead of asking yes or no questions, ask open-ended questions that encourage the other person to share their thoughts and feelings. For example, “What are you most thankful for this year?” or “What has been the highlight of your year so far?”
  3. Be present: Give your full attention to the person you are speaking with. Avoid distractions such as phones or other devices and focus on the conversation at hand.
  4. Share your own experiences: When appropriate, share your own experiences and feelings of gratitude. This can help to create a sense of connection and understanding between you and the other person.

Role of Active Listening

Active listening is an important skill that can help to enhance gratitude conversations. Here are a few tips to help you become a better listener:

  1. Focus on the speaker: Give your full attention to the person speaking. Make eye contact, nod your head, and use other nonverbal cues to show that you are engaged in the conversation.
  2. Avoid interrupting: Allow the speaker to finish their thoughts before responding. Avoid interrupting or interjecting your own thoughts or opinions.
  3. Clarify and summarize: To ensure that you understand the speaker’s message, clarify and summarize their points. This can help to ensure that you are both on the same page and can lead to a more meaningful conversation.

By following these tips and techniques, you can enhance your gratitude conversations and create a more meaningful and enjoyable Thanksgiving experience.

This is your guide for hosting a Friendsgiving party that’s more fun than a turkey in a tuxedo! Friendsgiving isn’t just about stuffing your face with delicious food (although that’s a big part of it), it’s also a time to share laughter, create unforgettable memories, and bond with your chosen family. And what better way to do that than with a smorgasbord of popular Friendsgiving party games that leave your party guests gobbling for more?! Get your game face on and let the fun begin.

Friendsgiving is a relatively new tradition that has gained popularity in recent years. It is a time for friends to come together and celebrate the holiday season with a festive meal. While the focus is usually on the food, Friendsgiving party games can add an extra layer of fun to the occasion. Best of all, Friendsgiving entertainment doesn’t have to be costly. Even low-cost Friendsgiving games can create epic memories.

Understanding Friendsgiving is important to planning a successful event. Unlike Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving is not typically celebrated with family members. Instead, it is an opportunity for friends to create their own traditions and enjoy each other’s company. This means that Friendsgiving party games can be more relaxed and informal than traditional holiday games.

Planning Friendsgiving Party Games is a crucial step in creating a fun and memorable event. It is important to consider the age range and interests of your guests when choosing games. Popular Friendsgiving Party Games include timed games, card games, and group activities like Charades or even scavenger hunts. The key is to choose games that are easy to learn and encourage interaction among guests.

Understanding Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving is a social gathering or celebration that typically takes place around the same time as Thanksgiving but is not tied to the traditional Thanksgiving holiday observed with family. Instead of being a family-centric event, Friendsgiving is an informal gathering where friends come together to share a meal, express gratitude, and enjoy each other’s company.

The term “Friendsgiving” is a combination of “friends” and “Thanksgiving.” It has become increasingly popular particularly among younger adults and college students, who may not be able to spend the actual Thanksgiving holiday with their families due to distance or other reasons. Friendsgiving often involves potluck-style dinners, where each guest brings a dish to share, and the meal can include both traditional Thanksgiving foods and other dishes of the guests’ choosing. It does not have to take place on Thanksgiving day.

Friendsgiving celebrations can vary widely in terms of formality, size, and the types of activities or traditions involved. Some groups may choose to exchange gifts, play Thanksgiving-themed games, or engage in other activities to make the event unique and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Overall, Friendsgiving is a way for friends to create their own Thanksgiving-like experience, build a sense of community, and express gratitude for their friendships. It’s a fun and flexible way to celebrate togetherness and appreciation during the holiday season.

History of Friendsgiving

The term Friendsgiving is believed to have originated in the early 2000s. It was used to describe a Thanksgiving celebration held by friends, rather than family. Over time, the concept of Friendsgiving has evolved and expanded to include a wide range of gatherings held during the holiday season.

Today, Friendsgiving is celebrated by people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a chance to come together with friends and create new fall traditions. Whether it’s a casserole dinner, a game night, or a weekend getaway, Friendsgiving is all about spending time with the people you care about.

Importance of Friendsgiving Party Games

Friendsgiving party games can be an essential part of the celebration. They provide a fun and interactive way to bring people together and create lasting memories. They are great for icebreakers and will create a memorable night – we promise people will be talking about it for weeks (and years) to come. Whether you’re playing outdoor games, funny games, or challenging group games, there’s something for everyone.

One of the benefits of Friendsgiving party games is that they help break the ice and get people talking. They provide a common ground and a shared experience that can help build stronger friendships. Plus, they’re a great way to pass the time and keep everyone entertained.

Overall, Friendsgiving is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people in your life and create new traditions. By incorporating party games into your celebration, you can make it even more memorable and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Once you’ve chosen your holiday games, it’s important to set them up in a way that makes sense for your party. In fact, setting up the games is easier than pie (well, almost)! Just clear some space, grab your party hat, and don’t forget the game pieces.

Here are some tips for setting up your Friendsgiving party games:

  • Create a game area: Set up a designated area for games so that guests know where to go when they want to play.

It’s like Christmas just came early for your party-planning ideas!

What age is good for scavenger hunt participation?

The perfect age for a Christmas scavenger hunt is young, old, young at heart, grumpy, and ____ (you fill in the blank!) Even though the “already made for you” Christmas scavenger hunt printable PDF is geared toward an office party, it is adjustable. Customize the fun for all ages to join in on a good time. That means this fun scavenger hunt can be used for kids, youth, teens, and adults alike.

If you’re looking for that office party vibe, it would be great for a team-building exercise for all employees, managers, and supervisors to participate. Break up the monotony of the day with a fun activity for the winter holiday season.

If you want to use this for a family-friendly scavenger hunt, instead, you can easily make that happen as well by creating some clues for a holiday scavenger hunt around the house or a location that you are at – like a classroom, park, theater, and more.

It’s really that simple and easy to use!

Where should I have a Christmas scavenger hunt?

where to have a christmas scavenger hunt

Holiday treasure hunts can happen anywhere. Especially when they have an adaptable checklist that can be personalized for a group of individuals looking to have fun.

Organizing a Christmas scavenger hunt at the office can be a fantastic way to bring holiday cheer to the workplace and is great for team building. Not only will it encourage team bonding and boosts morale among colleagues. If you’re having an office party, then you should set up the holiday scavenger hunt to do at the office, a party location, an outdoor venue, etc. You can even make the scavenger hunt around town and make everyone text photographic evidence on a cell phone back to a record keeper who will keep track of the score.

Can I use this holiday scavenger hunt for places other than an office?

Yes! You can use this Christmas hunt anywhere and for any group of people. That’s the beauty of being able to edit the game printable. Add your own fun and flair to the PDF printable, then you can change the audience and venue to wherever it fits the best.

A printable Christmas treasure hunt can be used in various settings and situations to add excitement and festive fun to the holiday season.

Here are some great places where you can host a Christmas scavenger hunt:

  1. At Home: Hosting a Christmas scavenger hunt at home is a popular choice. You can set up holiday decor and props in hiding spots throughout different rooms in the house, including the living room, kitchen, and even the backyard if weather permits.
  2. School or Classroom: Teachers can plan a Christmas-themed scavenger hunt in the classroom, making learning and celebrating the holiday more engaging for students. Just pay attention to the list of items and hide what is needed around the school or classroom. Ask your principate or administration if you can extend the hunt to the playground, hallway, or even special area classrooms.
  3. Community or Neighborhood: For a larger-scale event, you can arrange a Christmas scavenger hunt game in your community or neighborhood. This can involve multiple households participating and can be an excellent way to bring people together or promote family bonding.
  4. Christmas Party: Whether it’s a family gathering, a holiday-themed party with friends, or a company Christmas celebration, a scavenger hunt can serve as an interactive and enjoyable activity for all attendees and any location.
  5. Shopping Mall: Some shopping malls organize Christmas scavenger hunts during the holiday season to entertain shoppers and enhance the festive atmosphere. Alternatively, with no help from the mall stay get a team or small group and go on a mall scavenger hunt during the holiday season.
  6. Christmas Markets or Festivals: If there’s a Christmas market or festival in your area, you could collaborate with the organizers to include a scavenger hunt as part of the festivities.

Remember, a holiday scavenger hunt can be tailored to fit various locations and age groups, making it a versatile and enjoyable activity for everyone involved during the most wonderful time of the year.

Rules of a Scavenger Hunt

group game christmas scavenger hunt rules

No matter how you want to host this fun scavenger hunt, be sure to set a few ground rules. Adults and kids will get super excited and ready to go, but instructions need to be put into place first.

For a work scavenger hunt or a group scavenger hunt, there are a few options:

  • Person vs Person – It’s every person for themself.
  • Team vs Team – Small groups will work better for this activity.
  • Team vs Time – Have the team race against the clock instead of one another.

Once the participants of each team are chosen, it’s time to move on to the rest of the simple rules.

Time: Set a time limit. How much time does each person/team have?

Proof: How will the proof be shown of items that they find? Photos on their phone? Yelling out to the judge to come see to check off the list? Accountablity? It’s important everyone is on the same page for proving they found the Christmas-themed item on the list.

Questions: Set up a location where someone can be to answer questions or give hints if hints are going to be given.

Points: This holiday game can be totaled with points. One point for each item found. You can have bonus points for those that finish first or submit the item virtually via a photograph first.

Whatever the directions, make sure everyone understands them. Rules can be adjusted and adapted with each use based on age group, available items on the scavenger list, and location. Make sure to communicate the hunt rules to all before the game starts so that there is no confusion as to the expectation or potential outcome.

Get to know a new school with a hands-on classroom scavenger hunt PDF. Print this really cute, interactive school scavenger hunt to explore the 5 senses, new rooms, the hallway, class, & more. Great for a new year the first day of school, or welcoming a new student!

how to create a fun classroom scavenger hunt for kids

The back to school season can bring a mixture of emotions. The beginning of the year includes a new environment, new friends, and a new teacher. In order to break up anxieties and the stresses of unknown settings, we’ve put together a great activity that can be used across all grades.  A classroom scavenger hunt has many benefits but mostly those of creating an ice breaker for meeting new peers and a new environment. Play with your students or get with another teacher and pair older kids wiht younger kids as they learn about the places in their school.

We created a simple scavenger hunt that you will love. More importantly, a cute hunt that they will love. In this blog post, learn the different ways you can create a school scavenger hunt, the benefits of a school scavenger hunt, and fun ideas to personalize both types of scavenger hunts for younger and older kids.

Let the fun begin!

How do you do a scavenger hunt in school?

If you are ready to create a fun activity at school for the students, a scavenger hunt is a great start. A scavenger hunt creates guided exploration for students to explore the environment. It can be done independently in a quiet setting with each student completing the task on their own. This can also be turned into a group activity where a group of students need to work together in a team to accomplish the task.

how to do a school scavenger hunt with kids

It’s very easy to set up a scavenger hunt at school. Create a list of things you want the kids to find and add these items to a scavenger hunt checklist. We’ve done the hard work for you and created a scavenger hunt set you can use. Either print both or one.

To set up the scavenger hunt:

  1. Download the classroom scavenger hunt.
  2. Print enough classroom scavenger hunts for each student or each team.
  3. Go over the rules. This hunt does require you to go in common and public spaces. Make sure kids know to keep low or quiet voices.
  4. If doing this with a new student, create a buddy system and allow fellow classmates to lead them around the school and show them their new environment.

Optional: Print these on cardstock for durability. You can even laminate the scavenger hunts to use year after year. Kids can use dry-erase markers when they find the item and complete the task.

When should you use a classroom scavenger hunt?

Knowing the benefits of a school scavenger hunt will help you establish the reason to use this fun resource. A school scavenger hunt is great for teamwork, problem-solving, getting to know a new environment, and getting to know peers.

why to use a fun classroom scavenger hunt at school with the kids

Reasons for a classroom scavenger hunt include…

  • Ice breakers and connecting new peers
  • First day of school ideas for activities
  • Learning about the spaces in a new school and new classroom
  • Teamwork and group games for tablemates, new friends, teachers, and students
  • Builds problem-solving skills
  • Welcoming a new student to a new school
  • Body & mind exercises for the first week of school
  • Photo scavenger hunt for a photography class or art classroom
  • Spread across multiple grades and use as an activity for older buddies with younger buddies

The school game benefits are making a new place familiar, connecting with others, and providing a fun activity for the school day.

Now that you know the benefits, discover the items you will find on your school scavenger hunt list.

Classroom Scavenger Hunt Ideas

On the printable classroom scavenger hunt for school, we have put together a list of ideas. Some of these ideas are concrete and will be tangible items that are the same for all students. Some of these ideas are abstract and can be different ideas for each student.

Take a look at these good items for a school scavenger hunt:

  • American flag
  • Teacher desk
  • Cafeteria
  • Music room
  • Something red
  • An object in the shape of a circle
  • Something you can smell
  • Students’ desk
  • Bathroom
  • Gym

… and more picture clues!

Classroom Scavenger Hunt Printable

There are many reasons you can enjoy a classroom scavenger hunt. This is a great scavenger hunt for kindergartens or younger kids. One at-school classroom scavenger hunt shows students around the new school. The other is a fun school treasure hunt that observes senses, numbers, shapes, and colors.

printable school scavenger hunt for the classroom

We get it. Color ink is hard to come by in a school setting. This interactive school scavenger hunt also comes in a B&W version. In addition to a color worksheet and black & white printable, the scavenger hunt comes in two sizes so you can print two on your 8.5 x 11-inch page. We want to make this school scavenger hunt worksheet cost-efficient and easy for you.

Gift the kids an activity that is so much fun. Get to know a new school or elementary school setting with a Back to School Scavenger Hunt checklist.

*This is a non-editable PDF document.

School Classroom Scavenger Hunt Printable

Can this scavenger hunt be done in a preschool classroom?

Yes, this school scavenger hunt can be done in many places. The age of the kids includes kindergarten, elementary school, and preschool. This is a perfect classroom scavenger hunt preschool worksheet because it includes exploring a new environment and the five senses. Since many preschoolers do not visit an art room, you can talk about the art area in general. Since some preschool environments don’t have a “principal’s office” you can talk about the director of the school and introduce a new vocabulary word – principal. Lastly, teach children about colors and the five senses as you work to discover objects with different colors, shapes, and textures. Just adapt the environment for the school scavenger hunt list as needed. Use rooms or facilities you might not have as examples for discussions.

printable preschool classroom scavenger hunt ideas

To further this lesson with preschoolers, as the teacher you could also go on a virtual scavenger hunt of their “big school” right before they approach graduating from preschool. Instead of using this hunt at the beginning of the school year, you are going to save it for the end of the year when your students are starting a new “big kid” school, aka kindergarten. For younger kids, create a slide show of their new school with the images in the school scavenger hunt checklist.  With a little creativity, you can visit almost any place on a virtual field trip. If your students are going to different schools – let’s say three, then have an image of three different gyms. What a great way to reduce those first-day-of-school anxieties. I bet the parents will love you (I mean they likely already do!)

Is this scavenger hunt a competition?

That is really up to you. The school classroom scavenger hunt can be done individually or in teams. With either, you can race against the clock or race against other teams/individuals.  Keep in mind, competition tends to create louder voices. If doing this as a friendly competition, have rules for voice levels and running.  You know your students. If you don’t and you want to control the environment and behavior, it’s best to avoid competition. Instead, have a small reward for completion with an end time at the end of the day. Completion can be done on your own timeline and everyone wins.

Fun prizes for a school scavenger hunt can include:

  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • School supplies
  • Fidget toys
  • Mini pencil sharpeners
  • Colored paper clips
  • Homework pass
  • Extra recess

… and of course, intrinsic satisfaction is likely the most rewarding!

This is such a fun activity – when the sun goes down, head outside and play flashlight tag. This outdoor nighttime game is super fun with the immediate family or as a large outdoor group game.

Try new pool games

The pool is one of the best places to cool over during summer. Invite some friends over and quit the routine Marco Polo game. Instead all some fun pool party games for adults, teens, and kids (that are good swimmers.) They are silly and fresh and the kids will love them.

Have a sleepover

Sleepovers are great for pillow fights, late-night movies, and sleeping in (because there isn’t anything on the schedule to wake you!) Play truth or dare or sleepover games for the girls. It will be a great night!

Host a potluck

It takes a little work but is worth it if you can spread out the tasks. Host a potluck at your home. When everyone split the effort, these become cheap summer meals for a crowd catering to a bunch of different taste buds. What about a bike ride after adding accessories to your bike wheels? Try to go back to some of those 80s summer days with a jump rope, Simon Says, shaving cream, bubbles, and sprinklers, and see if your kids will enjoy the nostalgia.  Give them their own retro summer bucket list.

Take a nap outside

Okay, okay – what’s a nap? I get it. If you don’t nap, take a second to lay under the sun and get some vitamin D.

Have a neighborhood bike parade

Explore a new spot with a bike ride. Get to know neighbors in the hood by taking an early evening bike ride.

Host a summer camp

As you know, summer camps can be costly.  Cheap summer camps can be had in your own backyard. See if a teen might want to host a one-week summer camp at your home for an hour each day. It isn’t too long and gives neighborhood friends a chance to come together plus a teen a fun activity and a bit of spending money.

Make chalk bombs

Have a blast during something ordinary into something fun – like sidewalk chalk. Make your own chalk bombs using an easy recipe on the web.

Have a backyard bonfire

The backyard is a perfect place for a campfire. Try these hot dog campfire recipes and enjoy your very own dinner around the flames. Follow up the hot dogs with these tasty s’mores cones.

Play in the dirt

… or the mud. So much fun can be had outdoors. See if you can use a buy-nothing group and find a no longer loved play kitchen. Turn it into a mud kitchen. You can also paly outdoors in the run with these fun rainy-day activities.

Celebrate half birthdays

Summer birthdays add plenty of adventure and opportunities you might not get with a winter birthday (i.e. a pool party!) Half birthdays are a great way to spread the love, attention, and activities.

Pull out that inner artist with a bit of craft. Drawing ad painting are activities you can take outdoors to the patio or deck. Print out free coloring pages and watch your art portfolio grow.

Go on a photo scavenger hunt

A photo scavenger hunt is an excellent activity for older kids and teens to explore. Get rid of that “I’m bored” statements with cheap summer activities for teens too. It gets them off the screen (well except using their phone to take photos!)

Look for shapes in the clouds

Ice cream is great. Host an ice cream party, make your own ice cream, and add fun toppings and tasty cones.

To your bucket list of outdoor summer activities, hang a white sheet on the wall, grab a projector, and host an outdoor movie night. This can be accomplished for a Netflix and chill family movie night or a neighborhood gathering with friends.

Read together

Whether you have summer reading programs or not, visit your local library and stock up on some fun reads. Make a summer reading bucket list with summer-themed books for kids. Try reading in different places like under a table, on a hammock, by a creek, etc.

Bowling can get expensive. Fill up 2-L bottles with water and glow-in-the-dark sticks and have fun with outdoor bowling. If your crew finds this exciting, enjoy more glow-in-the-dark games and entertainment you can enjoy the entire summertime.

Movie nights are great. Make every Friday night a movie night and see if you can go through a series of movies. For example all of the toy story movies for a month long, on Friday nights. Nature journaling is a fun outdoor activity for families. Nature journaling can be done with kids, adults, friends, and family. Explore ponds, creeks, rivers, fields, trails, mountains, and more.

Today we will look at what is nature journal, how to create your own nature journal, and our fun pond life journal for young kids.

What is Nature Journaling?

In the same way that one records their thoughts and feelings, nature journaling can be done in parallel. Nature journaling is simply writing down one’s experiences and illustrations in response to the natural world. It’s a relaxing outdoor activity not only for adults but for children too. This fun outdoor activity connects the writer with the great outdoors and living world. Nature journals can be self lead through creative and free thought. Alternatively, nature journaling can be directed using nature observation worksheets or fun outdoor scavenger hunt printables.

How to Start a Nature Journal

To start a nature journal, grab paper and a pencil. That’s it. Free form is a great way to start writing and illustrating the observations you see in our natural world. Keep your paper together in a binder, folder, or notebook to create an exploration journal. A journal can be done over a short period of time like during a day or weekend. Nature journaling can also be done over a long series of time creating a lifelong diary or nature logbook.

How does an observation journal work?

The fun part about having a journal full of observations is that everyone’s will be different. The goal of nature journaling is broad. Journal entries can record changes in animal tracks, sketches of the outdoor environment, or even fictional stories about the environment one’s in.

The fun part about searching and looking for things related to a pond is that everyone gets to be a part of the fun. We’ve used this activity during sleepovers, campouts, hikes, and even just a fun family day where we put the screens down, and spent time together, face to face.

Nature Scavenger Hunts

printable nature scavenger hunt ideas for kids at the pond

Kids love outdoor exploration through a nature scavenger hunt. The pond life activities worksheet includes two types of pond outdoor scavenger hunts including a Pond Scavenger Hunt for Nature and a Pond Scavenger Hunt with Photos.

Find some of the following things at the pond…

  • Duck
  • Frog
  • Lily Pad
  • Dragonflies
  • Birds
  • Insects

For literacy activities, the scavenger hunt with words is meant for emergent readers and older kids who can read. The scavenger hunt with pictures is meant for young kids who did visual images of pond items they can look at and find on their own.  Pair up older explorers and younger kids and do both!

Let each child create a check or circle over their items found so little learners can work on their fine motor skills during the small pond theme activities.

More Ideas for Nature Journaling at the Pond

Don’t forget to change it up to work for your needs!  Make this printable nature journal for kids your own! You can use it just like it is or change it to something new.

Some fun ideas to personalize this pond life nature journal includes…

Have a fun prize

Don’t forget the prize and make it a friendly competition. It’s always fun to motivate people with a prize! If you can think of fun pond prizes, that is even better. A small prize would be gummy worms (to be like fishing worms!) and a larger prize could even be a fishing pole! Hit the dollar store to see what you can find.

Keep track as you go

If you want to make a point system, adding a counting element is a fun way. Have everyone count how many frogs they find, count the lilypads, and more! This turns the fun into a math activity. I think that we ended up counting 15 frogs and over 30 lilypads on our outdoor pond adventure. We all had a blast using this as our basis! There are so many things that you’ll see that you can add to the list as well. Have fun with it and go with the flow coming up with new ideas as you explore.

Collect fun things

Scientists and naturalists will enjoy having a small bucket or bag to carry the items they collect. Bring your fun trinkets back to the classroom and look at such items under a microscope.  You can use such items to make your own nature arts & crafts or add to a fun hands-on nature sensory bin.

Add a photo contest

You’ll undoubtedly see a ton of really cool things while you’re looking around the pond. See who can take the best picture and share it with everyone! Use the nature treasure hunt to create your own photo scavenger hunt with pond items or photograph things not found in the outdoor treasure hunt like…

  • Pond patterns
  • Eggs, tadpoles, and frogs to create your own illustrated frog life cycle
  • Turtles
  • Cloud patterns

May the best photo win. Use your photos to add to your nature journal scrapbook.

This outdoor pond printable is easy to use and fun as well! Get ready to be in a friendly competition with the kids because you will look for everything, just like they are!

What ages can participate in this pond journal activity?

Bullet Journaling

Bullet journaling is an excellent resource for journaling about nature. Instead of a blank page or page with lines, a bullet journal (or BoJo) is a series of dots. The writing connects the dots to create beautiful graphics, calendars, notes, sketches, and more. Similar to a wreck journal, it’s a free page for free thought and freedom of direction. Beach friendly food is important when traveling to the sand and sun. This Seasoned Oyster Cracker Recipe with ranch seasoning mix is easy to prepare, extremely tasty, filling and feeds a large crowd. It’s a family favorite beach snack recipe you will make over and over again.

Seasoned Oyster Cracker Recipe

Seasoned Oyster Cracker Recipe in the Crock-Pot

As a former sand and sun worshiper and native of Florida, I am often asked, “what snacks are good for the beach?”  The sun has a way of sucking the calories out of you and often tummies, namely those of the kids, are famished! My first goal of preparing beach snacks is to feed a crowd. If you go to the beach with two kids, you always end up feeding about triple your head count. Kids pick up kids. People also eat larger servings in the sun. I love to make a meal healthy, but I also like to make a hearty snack.

This Seasoned Oyster Cracker Recipe is perfect for feeding a crowd and is incredibly tasty. Best of all, it is easy to whip up the morning before you head out to the beach or prepare ahead and store in a tightly sealed bag or plastic container. This is a family recipe. My stepmom has made it for years and my kids always ask for it. She makes it without cheese crackers, but this year for our beach adventure, we decided to mix things up. In addition to our oyster crackers, we added Goldfish! I figured this would be a nice touch for our young crowd, three kids two and under!

Other beach friendly foods include peanut butter banana roll-ups tortillas, tangerines, frozen grapes, pre-cut watermelon triangles, strawberry mango salsa, frozen Capri Suns, kids Cliff Bars, and sandwiches. Think fruit, crabs, and protein!

Beach Friendly Recipe Adaption: This is best in the slow cooker so you can continuously stir. If your beach house lacks a Crock-Pot, prepare the recipe, lay it out on cookie sheets and let it bake in the sun! If the porch is too windy, bake it in the oven at 250 degrees for 20 minutes.

Seasoned Oyster Cracker Recipe Ingredients

Seasoned Oyster Cracker Ingredients:

  • 9 oz Oyster Crackers
  • 6.6 oz bag of Goldfish
  • 2 T Dill Weed
  • 3/4 cup Mazola Oil
  • 1 oz package Ranch Seasoning Mix

Optional: Make without Goldfish. Other variations include adding pretzels or substitute with mini Saltines.

You can substitute Mazola corn oil for vegetable oil. We also have changed the oil about pairing 1/4 cup vegetable with 4 TBSP unsalted butter.

Multiply as needed. This  recipe will fill about a gallon sized plastic bag.
