easy dinnerly meal delivery service with easy family recipe ideas

Is taste important to you? Do you crave more time? Will you change your dinner routine for the convenience of food arriving at your front door? If you are looking for affordable weeknight cooking and delivery service with fresh ingredients and simple recipes, take a look at Dinnerly Meal Delivery Service.

What is Dinnerly?

family dinnerly meal delivery subscription box service

Dinnerly is a meal delivery subscription dinner box. The meal service brings recipes with fresh ingredients straight to your door for unfussy, affordable weeknight dinners. Dinnerly supplies everything you need to prepare quality, delicious, home-cooked meals that require no planning or shopping.

Customer benefits include a choice of  100+ unfussy weeknight meal choices.  Each simple recipe includes pre-portioned ingredients and will take 30 minutes or less to prepare and cook (often less!) Often the meal subscription service works straight with the farmer suppliers and small organizations, making veggies fresh. Fresh ingredients = lots of taste!

Dinnerly can be shipped anywhere in the United States.

How does Dinnerly work?

The dinnerly website is very clear and easy to navigate. To get started you need to set up your account with your location and the number of people you plan to feed each week.

dinnerly subscription options for meals

To get started…

Choose Your Meal Size. To begin, choose the number of people and choose the number of meals. You can choose 2 or 4 people. You can choose up to 6 meals a week. Don’t worry you can adjust this each week when you are choosing your recipes.

Enter Your Location. Enter your zip code for shipping options.

Choose a Delivery Day. There are a few options for your delivery day based on your zip code. Your box will arrive between 8 am and 9 pm.

example dinnerly checkout for family meal subscription

Dinnerly boxes are designed to keep your produce fresh and refrigerated items chilled during their journey to your doorstep. Once your box is delivered, you should unpack your cardboard box as soon as possible and place its contents in your refrigerator (or freezer.)

How much does a Dinnerly subscription cost?

The price of this fun meal service will vary. For most users, portions will be around $4.99 – $7.00/serving. When choosing your Dinnerly meals, there are a few meals that might have upcharges for premi-YUM ingredients or dietary restrictions including grass feed beef, gluten-free, shrimp, seafood, steak, etc. As a counter, there are also a few options where the price of the portion is reduced.

example dinnerly recipes for family subscription meals

For a pricing example, I feed a family of seven on 4 person box.  (I will share later how I do this.) On average, I have four meals arrive each week. A four-meal week with a portion of four people costs me $94.24 plus $11.99 shipping.  That is less than $25/meal for a freshly cooked meal for my family. This pricing did not include any special offers or up chargers. This was $5.89.

Dinnerly pricing varies on two things:

  1. The number of meals ordered a week.
  2. The number of servings for each meal.

Dinnerly Cost

Look at this price chart for the dinnerly cost per serving based on the number of servings and meals.

updated cost dinnerly price comparison chart based on meals and servings

With this chart, you can see that the dinnerly cost is as low as $4.99 per person. This is because Dinnerly only lets you get meals for up to four people. But I get a meal for 7 people… So really, I stretch the dinnerly price to as low as $2.85 per person (plus any add-ons I get from my grocery store.)

I have found a way to get the Dinnerly cost down to $2.85 a person!

Why was this pricing worth it?

  • It gave me time as did not have to meal plan.
  • It offered convenience as did not have to grocery shop.
  • Everything was at my front door on a date I chose.
  • I was offering my family a variety of recipes (instead of the same old recipe.)
  • I can quickly see nutrition facts including calories, fat, and dietary details.
  • I had dinner on the table in less than 30 minutes.

At a low price of (as low as) $4.99/serving (or a Dinnerly price of $2.85), this was totally worth it and a very affordable meal kit.

Can I edit my recipes?

Yes, choose the weekly recipes you want! There are plenty of different meal options and varieties from Mexican, to Asian, Italian, and more. Dinnerly will suggest weekly menus, but you can edit your dinnerly offers each week. Add more or fewer recipes to your box depending on how many days of the week you need to cook.

I have dietary needs.

If you have dietary restrictions, Dinnerly has solutions. The meal plan recipes can be sorted and you can search among super recipes for vegetarians, gluten-free diets, and healthy living.

Are the recipes hard to make?

No.

I could stop with no but I will offer you more details. I seriously hate coking. It creates a mess and requires culinary creativity. These recipes dummy it down in a quick 20 to 30 minutes. The instructions are easy to read. The tastes are really great. I actually feel amazing at the end of the process. Having cooked dinners from a meal box for almost five months I actually feel like I have acquired a few culinary talents (nothing I ever desired to achieve.)

Can you pause your subscription?

Yes! Are you traveling or extra busy for one week? You can pause your subscription or skip a week. Customers can cancel at any time, there are no commitments to stay.

I have canceled ordering meals during Thanksgiving week or family travel.

I have more than four people in my family.

When you create a dinnerly subscription, you can choose a 2-person meal or a 4-person meal. If you have more than four people in your family, there are a few options. Simply order the same meal multiple times and get up to eight services or add ingredients to your grocery shopping.

I do the latter. Each week after I choose my recipes for the following week, I know what will be included in my dinnerly shipment. Based on these easy dinner recipes, I use my grocery delivery service to order extra ingredients like meats,  starches, or vegetables. My kids eat A LOT and it’s not uncommon for us to have a small portion of leftovers because I added extra chicken, pasta, or even broccoli to a weeknight recipe.

Easy Weeknight Recipes with Meal Subscription

fun dinnerly recipes to choose each week with a family subscription

Weeknights are full of activity mixed with the anticipation of getting to bed at a reasonable time and restarting the next day. Because of the hustle and bustle of the evening, having an easy weeknight recipe is very important.

Dinnerly has changed our evenings in the fact that I am not chasing fast food or going crazy repeating the same ole recipe. I simply open my phone, choose a recipe from my box for the night and grab the ingredients from my fridge.

The ingredients in dinnerly recipes are often about 5 to 7 items. Fewer ingredients plus a few steps. The steps are never longer than six easy steps. The directions are well-written and easy to follow.

Highlights which make these easy weeknight meals…

  • Recipes 30 minutes or less
  • Portioned ingredients
  • Simple recipe instructions
  • Reused pans and bowls for easy cleaning
  • Easily accessible ingredients
  • Few complaints
  • No grocery shopping

Often easy weekend night super of put on repeat. You know how to do it with the back of your hand and your family tires of this easily. When I open a dinnerly recipe, I have no idea where to begin but the six steps don’t cause me much stress. They are easy-peasy and all create new or familiar flavors we love.

In five months there might be five recipes we have repeated. Some recipes are similar tasting but each is new.

Adding to Subscription Box Meals

dinnerly recipe ingredients in subscription box

Dinnerly includes all the key ingredients you need to prep your meal. However, it’s very easy to add your ingredients to a Dinnerly recipe. Recipes only feed up to four people and I have a family of 7 (you do the math.) I could easily order another four-person recipe but that cost adds up. Instead, this non-chef tries this trick – ordering extra ingredients.

Because Dinnerly requires you to choose recipes in advance, I know what is coming the following week. So instead of duplicating my order, I order a few of the key ingredients in my grocery delivery service and add these staples to the easy Dinnerly recipe I plan to cook that week. Typically the items I add to recipes are meat, veggies, or starches. For example extra ground beef, extra pasta, or extra pasta.  If we are really in need of more food (which is rare), I make a side salad, a bread loaf, or a fruit salad.

If you do not wish to order extra food from your local grocery store, during your meal subscription checkout, Dinnerly has the option to add these extra products. These extra meat items or sides are sometimes at a lower price than most grocery stores.

In addition to adding more to the main course, during dinnerly checkout, you can add fun dessert recipes, snack bars, or already-prepared meals.

Recipe Ingredients

When cooking Dinnerly dinner recipes, there are a few pantry staples you will want to have around your house. These items are not shipped but are common cooking ingredients in most homes.

Kitchen staples you should have in your home include…

  • Eggs
  • Red Wine Vinegar
  • White Vinegar
  • Cooking Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic
  • Mayonaise

These key ingredients will be included in many of the subscription box Dinnerly recipes but not in your subscription box.

Dinnerly Recipes PDF

Dinnerly does not include recipes in their box. They include recipe ingredients but no recipe cards. Rather the menu planning Dinnerly website has a digital recipe box.

dinnerly smartphone app with digital recipe box

The first week I received my box my heart began to race because I was looking everywhere for dinner instructions. However, I quickly realized how easily I could locate the dinnerly recipes in the app on my phone.

Since the dinner recipes are available on both a Google play store and Apple Store Dinnerly app, you can easily look at digital recipe cards on your phone. However, if you want printable dinnerly recipes, follow these steps for your Dinnerly recipe PDF.

  1. Sign in to Dinnerly.
  2. Go to the order tab.
  3. Click the image of the recipe you want to print.
  4. Click the “click for cooking instructions” button.
  5. A recipe card PDF will open.
  6. Print this printable recipe PDF.

Save these recipes in a recipe binder. This will save money on printer ink and paper later as in the future you can repeat these dinner recipes and easily refer to your dinnerly menu recipe printables.

Of course, there is no need to print your recipes. You can view the cooking instructions right on your smartphone.

Dinnerly Review

Now you want the Dinnerly review? Let me give you my personal Dinnerly experience. I am sure you likely saw a few of my perceptions through the explanations of this meal kit delivery service.

If I may be very honest, I hate cooking. I hate baking. I hate mess. Being in the kitchen includes all of that. Regardless of my distaste for cooking, dinnerly has given me a positive experience.

I started a Dinnerly subscription in August. By February, I was still using the weekly meal delivery service. That’s a really long time (at least for me.) I have tried meal kit services like (Hellofresh or Home Chef) before and never committed to more than a three-week trial. This is dedication through half of a school year and I have no intention to stop. I bet you I make it this entire school year because of how useful it is for me.

What I love about Dinnerly Meal Subscription…

Dinnerly does my grocery shopping. I find it very helpful that the meal service does the grocery shopping for me. Besides using cooking staples (I already have) and adding a few extra items to my grocery list, I am no longer collecting ingredients at the grocery store for my family’s meals.

Dinnerly plans my meals. Dinnerly weekly offers suggestions for kid-friendly meals based on my history and saves and reviews. The menu planner eliminates the difficult planning and offers me weekly ideas. I can quickly confirm what I want to keep on my family’s menu and replace (or erase) what I do not want. This might take me 5 minutes each week.

Dinnerly tastes good. Not one time did my family not love one of the dinnerly supper recipes. I never had to toss a meal. Ingredient quality is there and you cook with fresh ingredients which add plenty of flavors. Does my family have different taste buds? Yes. That being said, there are times that a couple of picky eaters did not favor a dish but for the most part, at least five people like what I have made (that’s a huge accomplishment.)  Most of the time it’s all seven that like the delivered meals as I cater recipes to my family’s taste buds. My husband, who used to order individual meal services, stopped his delivery service and now eats what I cook. Hear me out, it wasn’t awful before it was just not food he wanted. He loves the meals now.

Dinnerly gives me confidence. Confidence in the kitchen was not something I was looking for. I could seriously care less. But I find as I cook more and order more dinnerly meals, I kind of understand the art of cooking. Sorry, I hate to be cliche. But I am learning how to substitute things or add slight variations to improve the preferences of my family/s likes. This was not a skill I had before. I also love the mechatronic pat on my back I get from my family when they say “yum!” or “so good!” (It’s quite frequent.)

I have used dinnerly not only for my immediate family (did I mention I have seven) but also for the extended family that has visited as guests. They loved the meals too. When guests come, I either order double the recipe or I just make adaptions like adding extra rice, sides, or meats.

In fact, this easy and low-cost meal service is mother-in-law approved! My MIL, who I find to be the best home chef ever, totally loved the convenience and cost of this meal service. She is a person who can run to the grocery store and create a five-course dinner with little or no direction. She’s creative with ingredients and flavors and really loved each of the meals I made for her when she visited.

All in all – time, taste and convenience have won me over to use this company week after week after week!

More Dinnerly Reviews

I wanted to supply you with other voices too! It’s important to read reviews before a big purchase like this. Google reviews actually has over 2,000 dinnerly reviews that show 4.5 stars.

Read some of these reviews of Dinnerly. I will share the good and the bad so you can see a variety of what people are sayings.  Pay attention to the bars. Over 2,000 reviews and that’s a pretty heavy 5-star line.

5 star dinnerly review on google

Every meal has been so delicious and my kids love them too! Also, I always have leftovers so the portions are a great size for a family of 5! I would recommend it to anyone.

3 star dinnerly review on google

We received our first Dinnerly box and it was better than expected! The shrimp bake in foil was amazing! We are now on week 3 of our Dinnerly subscription and we have Tuesday as our delivery date but every week thus far we have received an email update on Tuesday that due to unforeseen circumstances, our order will be delivered one day late. We still have our date set on our profile to Tuesday, but have not received our box on Tuesday. Other than this faux pas, the items shipped and quality are excellent & the recipes are very easy and quick!

Please note: I (Ashley) had a shipment issue like Tifnie and Dinnerly refunded me the full box.

3 star review on google for dinnerly

There are some really cool recipes! They use less plastic than some of the other companies. You do not get printed recipe cards which is very annoying to me. There are also no pictures on the recipe instructions online, which as a visual learner is sometimes difficult.

Please note: I understand Dawn’s frustration. I wish I had printed cards too. You can print off your online account if this is important to you. Otherwise, use your app.

review dinnerly 5 star on google

We’ve done a bunch of meal services but hands down love Dinnerly the best. We love the wide range in vegetarian and chicken options as our family doesn’t eat much beef and pork. Even when forgetting to select meal the options picked are amazing and meet our dietary restrictions. Good produce and great price for the value.

I thought it was important to also give you a 1-star Dinnerly review so you can also read a negative Dinnerly review in addition to the positive dinnerly reviews.

negative dinnerly review 1 star

My experience with Dinnerly started out fine. I enjoyed the convenience of planned meals with simple recipes and ingredients delivered. The recipes were down to earth and for the most part worked well for my family of picky eaters. However, over the past year there have been issues with quality, condition and missing ingredients. It was easy to let the little things go by at first. A smashed tomato, meat package leaks, smashed bread, a seasoning left out, the wrong meal sent, etc. Most recently, it was moldy bread and brown basil with pictures attached. I complained a total of 3 times and within a week each time received partial credit for the problems. I didn’t complain each time there was a problem because I didn’t want to mess with it or I would forget. Most of the time, I could use something I had on hand as a substitute. The frustration and disappointment level is just too much for the amount of money I pay for a service to reduce stress and make life easier. I contacted the company on Monday with the attached pics expressing the problems I have had and asked for a full box credit if they would like me to continue the service. On Friday, they offered to credit one meal instead of the box so I cancelled my subscription. I don’t have time to complain with almost every box and the one meal credit wasn’t enough to compensate for the issues in the past or time in the future needed to deal with ingredient problems. Six days ago I received an email requesting that I leave a review, so here it is. I gave three stars to be fair, but if you use this service be prepared to be flexible and have some extra ingredients on hand. If your experience is anything like mine, you will need them. Edit: Changed to a one star based on response below. Obviously, I have already given them feedback directly and they chose not to keep me as a customer.

You can even review Dinnerly too.

Explore the inspiring stories of faith in Hebrews 11 with these fun and educational crafts for kids. Help children learn about biblical characters and their unwavering trust in God.

heroes of faith explained hebrews 11 crafts and lessons

Teaching children about the heroes of faith from Hebrews 11 can be a deeply rewarding experience. These stories provide timeless lessons on faith, perseverance, and trust in God, helping young learners connect with important biblical figures and their inspiring journeys. By sharing these narratives, you can bring the Hall of Faith to life and encourage children to see themselves as part of God’s ongoing story.

What is the Hall of Faith?

The “Hall of Faith,” found in Hebrews 11, is a celebrated passage in the New Testament that highlights numerous individuals from the Old Testament who demonstrated extraordinary faith in God. This chapter serves as an inspirational reminder of the power and importance of faith, showcasing a diverse group of people who trusted God in various challenging circumstances.

hebrews 11 hall of faith explained

Biblical Background

The Book of Hebrews is a letter traditionally attributed to the Apostle Paul, although the exact authorship remains uncertain. The letter was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and struggling to hold onto their faith. The purpose of Hebrews is to encourage these believers to persevere, highlighting the greatness of Christ and the importance of faith.

Before we are introduced to Hebrews 11, the author of Hebrews emphasizes the greatness of Jesus Christ, who is greater than angels, Moses, and any earthly priest. Hebrews 10 ends with a call to perseverance in the face of suffering, urging believers to remember their early days of faith and to continue in endurance and faithfulness.

Hebrews 11:1-40 (ESV)

By Faith

1Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. 20 By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. 21 By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

32 And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. 35 Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. 36 Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— 38 of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Who’s in the Hebrews 11 Hall of Faith?

Hebrews 11 highlights several notable figures from the Old Testament, each celebrated for their unwavering faith.

hebrews 11 hall of faith list of people

Hall of Faith List:

  • Abel: Offered a better sacrifice than Cain.
  • Enoch: Taken up to heaven without dying because he pleased God.
  • Noah: Built an ark to save his family from the flood.
  • Abraham: Obeyed God’s call to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance and was willing to sacrifice his son Isaac.
  • Sarah: Received the ability to conceive a child in her old age.
  • Isaac: Blessed Jacob and Esau concerning their future.
  • Jacob: Blessed each of Joseph’s sons.
  • Joseph: Spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones.
  • Moses: Led the Israelites out of Egypt and kept the Passover.
  • Rahab: The prostitute who welcomed the spies and was not killed when the wall of Jericho fell.

In addition to these Hall of Fame members, the chapter also briefly mentions other heroes of faith, including Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the Prophets. Gideon led a small army to victory against the Midianites with God’s guidance. Barak, with the prophetess Deborah, defeated the Canaanite army. Samson, known for his incredible strength, delivered Israel from the Philistines. Jephthah, despite his difficult past, led Israel to victory over the Ammonites. David, the shepherd boy who became king, is celebrated for his heart after God and his defeat of Goliath. Samuel, the last judge and a prophet, anointed the first two kings of Israel and was dedicated to God’s service from a young age.

The chapter also references groups and events that showed great faith. The Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry land, demonstrating their trust in God’s deliverance from Egypt. The walls of Jericho fell after the Israelites marched around them for seven days, showing their obedience and faith in God’s unusual battle plan.

Additionally, Hebrews 11 honors women who received back their dead by resurrection, as well as many others who endured persecution, torture, imprisonment, and even death, refusing to renounce their faith because they looked forward to a better resurrection. These stories of endurance and steadfast faith highlight the remarkable ways in which God’s people have trusted Him throughout history, even in the face of immense challenges and suffering.

The names of God and jesus for kids

Hey there, friends! Ever thought about how awesome it is to teach kiddos about the names of God and Jesus? It’s not just about giving them some cool trivia—although there’s plenty of that too! It’s about sparking their curiosity, nurturing their faith, and laying down some serious groundwork for their spiritual path.

You see, diving into the meanings behind these names isn’t just an academic exercise. It’s like giving kids a backstage pass to understanding their relationship with the Big Guy upstairs. It’s about helping them build a solid foundation of faith that’ll stick with them through thick and thin.

So, buckle up and get ready for a journey that’s part discovery, part adventure, and all about deepening our connection to the divine. We’re about to unlock some seriously awesome insights into who God and Jesus really are—and trust me, it’s gonna be a wild ride!

Why is it Important to Teach the Names of God to Children?

Hey, good question! Teaching kids about the names of God isn’t just a random activity—it’s a game-changer for their spiritual growth. Here’s the lowdown on why it’s such a big deal:

  1. Getting to Know God’s Character: Ever noticed how people’s names can sometimes give you a clue about who they are? Well, it’s kinda like that with God. Each name reveals a different aspect of who He is—His love, power, provision, you name it! So, when kids learn these names, it’s like peeling back the layers of a really awesome mystery to get to know who God truly is.
  2. Building Trust and Confidence: Imagine having a friend who’s always there for you, no matter what. Well, that’s what knowing God’s names does for kids. When they learn that God is the Provider, the Healer, the Comforter, it builds trust. They know they can count on Him, which is a pretty big deal in this crazy world.
  3. Growing Their Faith: Faith isn’t just about believing in something you can’t see—it’s about knowing who you’re believing in. By learning God’s names, kids get a deeper understanding of who they’re putting their faith in. It’s like having a secret weapon against doubt, worry, and fear.
  4. Making Sense of the Bible: Ever read the Bible and wondered why God’s called different things? Knowing His names helps kids connect the dots. They start to see how each Bible story fits together and what it tells them about God’s purpose for the world, you, and me.
  5. Teaching Them to Pray: Prayer isn’t just about saying words—it’s about talking to God like He’s your best friend. And knowing God’s names gives kids a roadmap for those conversations. Whether they’re asking for help or saying thanks, they know exactly who they’re talking to.

So we can see, teaching kids about the names of God is a pretty big deal. It’s like giving them the keys to a whole new level of faith and understanding. And trust me, it’s a journey worth taking!

The ACTS Model Prayer is a simple yet powerful way to chat with God, guiding us through four key steps: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. It’s like having a heartfelt conversation with a friend, helping us to share our praises, say sorry, give thanks, and ask for what we need or want. Take a look at these parts of the Acts Method of prayer and use these printable worksheets, crafts, and templates for your quiet times.

how to pray the acts prayer method plus printable worksheets

Embarking on a spiritual journey often involves finding ways to deepen our connection with God, and the ACTS Prayer Method stands out as a powerful tool in this quest. Modeled after the Lord’s Prayer, the ACTS acronym delineates a comprehensive structure for prayer, encapsulating four key parts: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. This method of praying not only guides believers in their prayer life but also mirrors the holistic approach Jesus Himself taught His disciples in followers in the books of Luke and Matthew. By breaking prayer into these four pivotal components, individuals can experience a balanced and profound dialogue with God, ensuring that every aspect of their relationship with the Father is nurtured and developed.

Adoration in prayer sets the foundation by focusing our hearts on God’s infinite greatness and love, encouraging us to start our prayers with reverence and worship. Confession follows, inviting us to humbly acknowledge our sins and seek God’s forgiveness, thus cleansing our hearts and renewing our spirits. Thanksgiving shifts our attention to gratitude, prompting us to reflect on God’s endless blessings and express our heartfelt appreciation. Finally, Supplication allows us to present our requests and desires to God, relying on His wisdom and provision to meet our needs and those of others.

In addition to exploring these A.C.T.S. prayer parts, we also highlight engaging and printable resources designed to make the ACTS Prayer Method more accessible and engaging for both adults and children. These resources, including the ACTS Prayer Worksheet, the ACTS Prayer Coloring Wheel for Kids, and the ACTS Prayer Templates, serve as creative tools for individuals and groups to incorporate this meaningful prayer practice into their daily routines. Whether used in a classroom, children’s church, Sunday School, or family devotionals, these printable aids offer a dynamic way to explore and deepen one’s prayer life, ensuring that the timeless practice of meditation continues to enrich and guide us in our spiritual journeys.

Parts of Acts Prayer for Christians

ACTS Prayer, also known as the ACTS model, is a way of structuring prayer that can help individuals connect with God in a meaningful way. The ACTS model consists of four parts of Christian prayer: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Each part of the prayer serves a specific purpose and can help individuals deepen their relationship with God.

Adoration

Adoration Part of Acts Prayer

Adoration, the first component of the ACTS Prayer Method, centers on offering praise to God, recognizing His supreme nature and divine qualities. It’s a prayerful expression of worship and reverence, aimed at acknowledging many God’s attributes. This form of prayer encourages individuals to shift their focus from personal concerns to the grandeur and sovereignty of God.

Adoration is the aspect of prayer where we focus on praising God, acknowledging His greatness and the glory of His character. It’s about recognizing God for who He is, beyond just what He does for us. Adoration prayer enriches our understanding of the names of God and fosters a deeper relationship with Him. Here are key points about adoration in prayer:

  • Purpose: Adoration is dedicated to expressing reverence and worship towards God, highlighting the Attributes of God.
  • Expression: This can be achieved through various forms, including singing hymns, reciting scripture that praises God, or verbalizing admiration directly to God.
  • Focus Shift: Engaging in adoration takes the focus off ourselves and places it on the magnificence and majesty of praising God.
  • Scriptural Basis: Psalm 48:1 serves as a guiding principle: “Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise,” emphasizing the importance of praising God.

To begin your prayer with adoration, consider using these starting points:

  • Praising God’s Nature: Start by acknowledging God’s attributes or many names, referring to Him with reverent titles like “Jehovah,” “The Most High,” “King of Kings,” or “Holy God.”
  • Ideas for Opening Lines:
    • “I praise You for… (Your unfailing love and righteousness.)”
    • “God, You are… (infinite in wisdom, power, and love.)”
    • “Hallow be thy name.”

This structured approach to adoration helps believers center their minds and hearts on God’s glorious presence, setting a reverent tone for the rest of their prayer time.

Let’s praise God for his amazing attributes.

Confession

Confession Part of Acts Prayer

Confession stands as a fundamental component of prayer, where individuals come before God to admit their wrongdoings and seek His forgiveness. This act of humility opens the door to spiritual cleansing and renewal, allowing believers to embrace God’s grace fully and obtain mercy (Proverbs 28:13). Here’s a deeper look into confession within prayer:

  • Purpose: The act of confession is designed to cultivate humility and a thankful heart, acknowledging our need for God’s grace and forgiveness.
  • Expression: Confession prayers can be personal and intimate, carried out through silent reflection, written words, or verbal communication with God, where one openly admits their transgressions.
  • Self-Reflection: It serves as a moment for sincere self-examination and recognition of our sins, leading us to a path of repentance and spiritual growth.
  • Scriptural Basis Bible Verse: 1 John 1:9 underscores the power of confession: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” highlighting God’s readiness to forgive.

To initiate a prayer of confession, consider these guidelines:

  • Acknowledging Sins: Begin by honestly reflecting on your actions and attitudes that have fallen short of God’s standards.
  • Ideas for Opening Lines:
    • “God, I’m sorry for… (the times I’ve failed to love others as You have loved me.)”
    • “Father, forgive me for… (not trusting in Your promises and relying on my own strength.)”
    • “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

Praying confession is not just about acknowledging sin but also about receiving God’s forgiveness and moving forward with a renewed heart and mind, committed to living a life that reflects His love, mercy, and righteousness and recognizing the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Part of Acts Prayer

Thanksgiving in prayer is an expression of gratitude towards God, recognizing and appreciating His countless blessings, provisions, and unwavering faithfulness in our lives. This aspect of prayer enriches our relationship with God by fostering an attitude of gratitude and enabling us to see His hand in every facet of our existence. Below are key insights into incorporating thanksgiving into your prayer life:

  • Purpose: The primary aim of thanksgiving is to cultivate a heart full of gratitude towards God, acknowledging His goodness and mercy in both the grand and simple aspects of our lives. Focusing on Thanksgiving will create internal joy.
  • Expression: This gratitude prayer can be expressed in various ways, such as listing specific blessings, offering a heartfelt prayer, or singing songs that celebrate God’s generosity and love.
  • Recognition of God’s Goodness: It’s a time to reflect on and acknowledge the many ways God has manifested His love and provision, from the most significant miracles to the smallest gestures of care and blessings.
  • Scriptural Basis Bible Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 encourages believers to “ Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you,” reminding us of the importance of gratitude in every situation.

To start a prayer of thanksgiving, here are some suggestions:

  • Acknowledging Blessings: Take a moment to reflect on the specific ways God has blessed you, guiding you through challenges, providing for your needs, and blessing you with unexpected provisions.
  • Ideas for Opening Lines:
    • “Thank you, God, for … (Your endless love and for the peace You bring to my heart.)”
    • “Thank you for… (Your provision, especially in times when I saw no way forward.)”

White Thanksgiving is not explicitly mentioned in the Lord’s Prayer, it can be implied in the petition: “Give us this day our daily bread”

Engaging in thanksgiving not only honors God but also shifts our perspective, allowing us to see the abundance of our blessings and encouraging a positive outlook, regardless of our circumstances. Thank God for his good gifts.

Supplication

supplication Part of Acts Prayer

Supplication is the aspect of prayer where we bring our requests, needs, desires, and concerns before God, relying on His strength and provision. In Matthew 6:11, the Lord taught us to request our “daily bread.” We are instructed in Ephesians 6:18 “to pray at all times in the Holy Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” Supplication emphasizes our dependence on God and trust in His ability to guide, provide for, and protect us. This prayer of supplication is a powerful way to deepen one’s faith and reliance on God’s sovereignty. Here’s how supplication fits into the broader context of prayer:

  • Purpose: Supplication prayer aims to cultivate a spirit of dependence on God, encouraging believers to turn to Him for every need and desire, thereby strengthening their faith and trust in His provision.
  • Expression: Requests can be made through written or spoken words, or even in the silence of one’s heart, knowing that God hears every petition.
  • Focus on God: While presenting our needs, it’s essential to remember that the focus remains on God and His will for our lives, ensuring that our requests align with the Lord’s grand plan.
  • Scriptural Basis Bible Verse: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 serves as a foundation for the petition prayer, advising us not to be anxious but to present our requests to God with thanksgiving.

To engage in supplication effectively, consider these steps:

  • Presenting Requests: Approach God with a humble heart, openly sharing your needs, desires, and concerns, trusting in His perfect wisdom and timing.
  • Ideas for Opening Lines:
    • “Jesus, please… ( provide guidance in my current situation, and give me wisdom to make the right decisions.)”
    • “Father, I ask for… (Your healing touch upon those who are sick and suffering, and for Your comfort to those in distress.)”
    • “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

God’s prayer of supplication not only involves asking our Father for our personal needs but also interceding on behalf of others, demonstrating a heart aligned with our creator’s love for His people. It reinforces our relationship with the Almighty, acknowledging Him as the source of all help and provision.

Practical Guide to Acts Prayer

how to pray acts definition

Preparing the Heart

Acts Prayer is a powerful way to connect with God, but it requires a heart that is open and receptive to His leading. Before beginning a prayer session, it’s important to take a few moments to prepare your heart. This can involve confessing any sins or distractions that may be weighing on your mind, and asking God to help you focus on Him during your prayer time.

It’s also helpful to have a clear intention for your prayer session. This could involve praying for a specific need or situation, or simply seeking a deeper relationship with God. Whatever your intention, make sure to focus your mind and heart on it as you begin your prayer time.

Structuring Prayer Time

One of the key elements of Acts Prayer is structure. This involves dividing your prayer time into four distinct parts: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Each part is designed to help you connect with God in a specific way, and to guide you through a meaningful prayer experience.

During the Adoration phase, focus on praising God for who He is and what He has done. This can involve reciting specific verses or hymns, or simply speaking from your heart about God’s goodness and love.

In the Confession phase, take time to confess any sins or areas of weakness in your life. This is a time to be honest with God about your struggles, and to ask for His forgiveness and guidance.

During the Thanksgiving phase, focus on expressing gratitude for the blessings in your life. This can involve thanking God for specific people, situations, or experiences, or simply acknowledging His goodness and provision in your life.

Finally, during the Supplication phase, bring your requests and needs before God. This can involve praying for yourself, your loved ones, or the world around you. Whatever your requests, make sure to approach God with humility and a willingness to trust in His perfect will.

Overcoming Distractions

Distractions are a common challenge in any prayer session, but they can be especially difficult during Acts Prayer. To help overcome distractions, it’s important to find a quiet, distraction-free environment for your prayer time. This can involve finding a secluded spot in your home or church, or simply turning off your phone and other electronic devices.

It’s also helpful to have a specific plan for dealing with distractions when they arise. This could involve taking a few deep breaths, reciting a specific verse or prayer, or simply refocusing your mind on your intention for the prayer session.

By following these practical tips, you can experience the power and beauty of Acts Prayer in your own life. With a heart that is open and receptive to God’s leading, and a structured approach to your prayer time, you can deepen your relationship with God and experience His love and grace in new and meaningful ways.

Understanding Emotions Through Scripture

In this section, we’re going to explore how the Bible can help us understand and deal with our feelings. From moments of joy to times of sadness, fear, and everything in between, we’ll explore how biblical teachings offer insights and guidance to navigate the wide range of emotions with faith and understanding. So, let’s dive into how the Bible can help us make sense of our emotions and learn to handle them better.

Identifying Common Emotions

Together, let’s look at 12 common emotions: joy, fear, sadness, anger, love, happy, lonely, confused, mad, calm, tired, excited, and worried.

Joy

Joy is a deep feeling of happiness and contentment that comes from within. It’s more than just temporary pleasure; it’s a sense of inner peace and fulfillment that transcends circumstances. Joy is a fundamental emotion that children experience in various situations. The Bible is replete with verses that emphasize the importance of joy. Additionally, characters like David exemplify joy through praise and gratitude, despite facing challenges.

Bible Verses with Joy:

  • Psalm 126:3 “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
  • Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
  • Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in faith so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”.

Example of Bible Stories with Joy:

  • Genesis 21: Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac.
  • Matthew 2: The Birth of Jesus and the Wisemen’s Excitement
  • Psalm 51: David’s prayer to the Lord

Fear

Fear is that fluttery feeling in your stomach when something seems scary or unknown. It’s like when you’re afraid of the dark or worried about what might happen next. Fear can make your heart race and your palms sweaty, but it’s also a normal emotion that helps keep us safe by alerting us to potential dangers. In the Bible, fear often comes up when people face challenges or uncertainties, but it also teaches us to trust in God’s protection and guidance. Stories of courage, such as David facing Goliath, inspire children to trust in God’s protection.

Bible Verses about Fear:

  • Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
  • 1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
  • Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Examples of Bible Stories with Fear:

  • 1 Samuel 17: David and Goliath
  • Matthew 14:22-33: Jesus Walks on Water
  • Mark 4:35-41: Jesus Calms the Storm

Sadness

Sadness is a natural emotion that children may experience during times of loss or disappointment. However, the Bible provides comfort and hope in moments of sadness.  The story of Joseph’s reconciliation with his brothers demonstrates God’s ability to turn sorrow into joy.

Scripture References about Sadness:

  • Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
  • John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
  • Psalm 31:9 “Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow.”

Examples of Bible Stories with Sadness:

  • John 11: The Death of Lazarus (Jesus wept.)
  • 2 Samuel 12:15-23: David’s son dies
  • Jeremiah 9:1: Jeremiah is often referred to as the weeping prophet.

Anger

Anger is another emotion that children must learn to manage constructively. In many cases, it can be used interchangeably with mad. Ephesians 4:26 advises, “In your anger do not sin.” Jesus’ example of righteous anger in cleansing the temple teaches children the importance of standing up for what is right without letting anger control their actions.

Bible Verses about Anger:

  • James 1:20 “Anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
  • Psalm 37:8 “Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.”
  • Ephesians 4:26 “In your anger do not sin.”

Examples of Anger in Bible Stories:

  • Matthew 21:12-17: Jesus Flips Tables in the Temple
  • 1 Samuel 19: Saul tries to kill David
  • Genesis 4: Cain and Abel

Love

Love is a foundational principle emphasized throughout the Bible. Verses like 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describe love as patient, kind, and forgiving. The story of the Good Samaritan illustrates the importance of showing love and compassion to others, regardless of differences.

Bible Verses with Love:

  • 1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Examples of Bible Stories on Love :

  • Luke 10:25-37: The Parable of the Good Samaritan
  • Luke 15:11-32: The Parable of the Lost Son

Happy

Happiness is that awesome feeling when everything just seems right in the world. In the Bible, there are verses that remind us to appreciate the good times. Like in Psalm 118:24, which says, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” So, when you’re feeling happy, remember to thank God for all the good stuff happening around you.

Scriptures on Happiness:

  • Psalm 118:24 “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
  • Proverbs 15:13 “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.”

Examples of Happy Bible Stories:

  • Exodus 15:20-21: Miriam rejoices for crossing the Red Sea on dry ground

Lonely

Loneliness is a poignant emotion that children may encounter when they feel isolated or disconnected from others. It’s like a shadow that follows them, reminding them of their longing for companionship and belonging. In the Bible, there are verses that remind us we’re never truly alone. Like in Psalm 27:10, that mentions even if our moms and dads leave us, God would still be there. So, when a child is feeling lonely, remind them that God is our forever friend, ready to keep you company and bring you comfort, just like a warm hug from a loved one.

Bible Verses on Loneliness:

  • Joshua 1:9 “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
  • Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
  • John 14:18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

  • Jeremiah 15: Jeremiah’s Lamentations
  • Matthew 26:36-46: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
  • Genesis 37:12-36: Joseph Sold by His Brothers

Confused

Confusion is like trying to solve a puzzle without all the pieces – it can leave you feeling lost and unsure. But even in those moments, the Bible offers guidance and reassurance. In 1 Corinthians 14:33, it says, “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” So, when you’re feeling confused, remember to turn to God for clarity and peace, just like finding your way with a trusted guide.

Bible Verses on Disorder:

  • 1 Corinthians 14:33 “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.”

Calm

Calm, peace, or tranquility is a serene state of mind that children may experience when they feel a sense of inner quiet and contentment. It’s like a gentle breeze that soothes the soul and brings a sense of relaxation amidst life’s storms. In the Bible, there are scriptures that offer comfort and assurance of God’s presence in bringing calmness to our hearts. For instance, in Philippians 4:6-7, it says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This verse reminds us that God’s peace surpasses all human understanding and brings a deep sense of tranquility to our lives. Just as joy brings happiness and contentment, experiencing God’s peace allows children to find rest and solace in His presence, no matter the circumstances they face. God has it!

Bible Verses on Peace:

  • Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

Tired

Tiredness or exhaustion is a common feeling that children may experience after a long day of activities or when they’re feeling physically or emotionally drained. It’s like a heavy blanket weighing them down, making it difficult to find energy or motivation. In the Bible, there are verses that offer comfort and strength to those who are tired or weary. For instance, in Isaiah 40:31, it says, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This verse reminds us that God provides the strength we need to overcome exhaustion and persevere through challenging times. Just as joy brings happiness and contentment, finding renewal in God’s strength helps children navigate through moments of tiredness and exhaustion with resilience and perseverance.

Examples of Bible Stories with Exhaustion:

  • Judges 16: Samson and Delilah
  • Jonah 4:5-11: Jonah Resting Under the Vine
  • 1 Kings 19:1-8: Elijah Flees to Horeb

Excited

Excitement is a thrilling feeling that children often experience when they’re looking forward to something special or anticipating an upcoming event. It’s like a bubbling energy inside them, making them feel eager and enthusiastic. In the Bible, there are verses that celebrate moments of excitement and anticipation. For example, in Psalm 37:4, it says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” This verse reminds us that God delights in our excitement and desires to bring us joy. Just as joy brings happiness and contentment, excitement adds a spark of anticipation to our lives, reminding children that there’s always something wonderful to look forward to.

Worried

Worry is a common feeling that children may experience when they feel anxious or uncertain about something. It’s like a cloud that hangs over their thoughts, making them feel uneasy or restless. In the Bible, there are verses that offer comfort and reassurance to those who are worried or with anxiety. For instance, in Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus encourages His followers not to worry about their needs, assuring them that God cares for them deeply. Just as joy is a foundational emotion, so is finding peace amidst worry, and the Bible provides guidance and comfort to children facing anxious moments.

We will break down these commandments in a way that’s easy for kids to understand. Then, we’ll explore fun and engaging ways to teach these timeless principles, including a hands-on printable activity.

Let’s take a look.

The Ten Commandments Story

The Old Testament story of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments is a key moment in the Bible, found in the book of Exodus. Here’s a concise version of the story:

The Call of Moses

Moses, once a prince of Egypt who fled to the land of Midian where he was called by God from a burning bush. God tasked him to lead the Israelites out of slavery in the land of Egypt.

The Exodus

After God performed miraculous plagues to compel Pharaoh to let the Israelites go, Moses led them out of Egypt. They crossed the Red Sea and journeyed into the desert towards Mount Sinai (also known as Mount Horeb).

Receiving the Commandments

At Mount Sinai, God called Moses to the top of the mountain. There, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, laws that were meant to guide the moral and spiritual conduct of the Israelites. God’s good rules were written by God on two stone tablets.

The Purpose

The Ten Commandments were given as part of a covenant between God and the Israelites. They were meant to set the Israelites apart from other nations, guiding them in a life of righteousness and justice, and laying the foundation for their relationship with God. The commandments covered aspects of worship, personal conduct, and justice, aiming to create a harmonious society under God’s sovereignty.

This event is pivotal, symbolizing not just the legal and ethical foundation for the Israelites but also God’s direct intervention and care for His chosen people.

How do you explain the 10 Commandments to a child?

The Ten Commandments are a set of rules given by God to the people of Israel, meant to guide them in living a life that’s pleasing to God and respectful to others.

The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus 20:1-17.

The chapter begins,

“And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.'” (verses 1-2)

Here’s a simple breakdown of The Ten Commandments explained in simple terms for younger children:

1.) You shall have no other gods before Me.

You shall have no other gods before Me first commandment tablet

First Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall have no other gods before me.” (verse 3)

Simple Explanation for Kids

Imagine you have a super special best friend who loves you more than anything. That friend is God. God asks us to make sure He is our number one buddy, our superhero. He doesn’t want us to think toys, games, or anything else is more important than Him. He loves us a whole bunch, and He wants us to love Him back the most. Just like when you have a favorite toy, but God wants to be even more special than that toy. God talks about this in a big book called the Bible, and even Jesus said it’s the most important rule: Love God more than anything else. (Matthew 22:37–38)

Practical Questions for Kids

  • Is something more important to you than God?
  • What do you think about first thing in the morning and last thing at night?
  • How do we show God that He is special to us?
  • Who do we talk to when we’re scared or worried?

This means we should only worship God and make Him the most important thing in our lives.

2.) You shall not make idols.

You shall not make idols second commandment tablet

Second Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” (Verses 4-6)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God tells us not to make things like idols of sports, toys, pictures, or statues and pretend they’re super special or magical, like pretending they can listen to us or help us like God can. It’s a bit like when we make a drawing or a Lego building, but we shouldn’t act like these things are as amazing as God. God is like our number one hero, and no superhero toy or movie character should take His place in our hearts. Sometimes, people make things and treat them like they’re super important, almost like they can do what God can do, but that’s not true. God is way more special than anything we can make.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • Do I make idols of sports heroes or entertainment figures?
  • Have I wanted more things making things or money more important than God?
  • Do I have toys or have I made things that are more important to me than God?

We shouldn’t create or worship anything or anyone more than we do God, including toys, celebrities, or money.

3.) You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain third commandment tablet

Third Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” (verse 7)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God’s name is very, very special, like a treasure. We should never use it in a mean, angry, or scary way. Sometimes, people might say God’s name when they’re surprised or upset, but that’s not nice or respectful. God’s name should only be used when we’re talking to Him, praying, or saying nice things about Him. Think of it as using your friend’s name kindly and with love. We shouldn’t pretend that God says it’s okay to do mean things. God’s name is for loving and kind words, not for being used in a bad way.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • Do I use God’s name carelessly?
  • Do I use God’s name in anger?
  • Do I speak of God with respect and love?
  • Have I ever used God’s name when I’m upset or frustrated?
  • Do I remember to use God’s name only in a kind and honoring way?
  • Am I careful with how I say God’s name in my conversations?

We should speak respectfully about God and use His name with care, not as a swear word or in a disrespectful way.

4.) Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy fourth commandment tablet

Fourth Commandment Bible Verse

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (verses 8 – 11)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God has a special day called the Sabbath, and it’s like a rest day or a super special holiday for our hearts. It’s a day when we don’t have to do any work, like homework or chores, and instead, we get to relax, play gently, and think about how awesome God is. Just like after a long week of playing and learning, we take a day off to chill out, God did the same thing when He made the world. He worked for six days making everything, and on the seventh day, He took a big, relaxing breath. So, God wants us to have a special day every week to rest and remember Him, because resting is good for us and it’s a way to say “thank you” to God for all He does.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • What special things do we do to make the Sabbath different from other days?
  • How can we show that the Sabbath day is important to us?
  • Do I take time to rest and think about God on the Sabbath?
  • What activities do I avoid on the Sabbath to keep it holy?
  • Do I look forward to the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship?

One day a week, we should rest and spend time thinking about God, similar to how we have a day off from school to relax.

5.) Honor your father and your mother.

Honor your father and your mother fifth commandment tablet

Fifth Commandment Bible Verse

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” (verse 12)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God wants us to be really good to the people who look after us, like our parents or guardians. Everyone has their own special way of showing respect and listening to them because they have lots of experience and can teach us how to stay safe and happy. When we are kind, listen, and help out at home, we are showing that we care. God says that being good to our caregivers helps make our lives better and the world a nicer place to live in. It’s a way of saying “thank you” to them and to God for giving us such great families and homes.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • Do I obey my parents?
  • Have I done my chores without complaining?
  • Have I been disrespectful to teachers, leaders, coaches, or others in charge of me?
  • Do I listen carefully when my parents are talking to me?
  • What are some ways I can help my parents without being asked?

This means we should listen to our parents, respect them, and help out at home.

6.) You shall not murder.

You shall not murder sixth commandment tablet

Sixth Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not murder.” (verse 13)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God tells us that it’s very important to always be kind to others and never hurt anyone on purpose. Everyone’s life is a special gift from God, and it’s not okay to take that away or decide when someone’s life should end. We should always use our words and actions to show love and care, not to make others sad or hurt. It’s like how we know it’s wrong to break someone’s toy, but it’s much, much more serious when it comes to hurting people. God wants us to protect each other and help everyone feel safe and happy.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • Do I keep my patience or do I lose my temper?
  • Do I hold grudges and try to get even with others?
  • Have I been unfair to others, especially those who are different than I am?
  • Why is life special and important to protect?
  • How can we be a good friend and keep others safe?

We should never hurt others. This teaches us the importance of being kind and valuing everyone’s life.

7.) You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not commit adultery seventh commandment tablet

Seventh Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not commit adultery.” (verse 14)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God teaches us that when two people get married, they make a very special promise to always be there for each other and to share their love and life. It’s like promising a best friend, but even stronger. When you make a promise at a wedding, you are entering into a covenant, forever. God wants everyone to keep their promises, especially the ones made when getting married because those promises are very important. It helps everyone feel loved and safe, just like when you make a promise to a friend and you keep it, it makes your friendship stronger and happier.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • What does it mean to be loyal to someone?
  • Do I show respect for my body?
  • Do I respect the bodies of others?
  • What does it mean to be committed to helping and caring for our family and friends?
  • Why is it important to keep promises to our friends and family?

This is a rule for grown-ups, teaching them to be faithful to their spouses. For kids, it means we should be loyal and trustworthy friends.

8.) You shall not steal.

You shall not steal eight commandment tablet

Eighth Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not steal.” (verse 15)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God tells us that we shouldn’t take things that belong to someone else. Imagine if you had a favorite toy, and someone took it without asking; you’d feel sad, right? That’s why taking things without permission is not nice. God wants us to be happy with what we have and to ask if we need something, instead of just taking it. It’s important to share and to treat others the way we want to be treated, with kindness and respect.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • Why is it wrong to take things that don’t belong to us?
  • How would you feel if someone took something of yours without asking?”
  • What should you do if you find something that doesn’t belong to you?
  • Why is it important to ask for permission before using someone else’s things?
  • How can we show respect for other people’s belongings?
  • Have I “forgotten” to return something that I borrowed?

Taking something that isn’t yours, without permission, is wrong.

9.) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor ninth commandment tablet

Ninth Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” (verse 16)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God teaches us that it’s really important to always tell the truth, especially about other people. Imagine if someone said you did something you didn’t do; that wouldn’t feel nice, would it? That’s why we shouldn’t make up stories or lies about others. Sometimes, it might be scary to tell the truth because we think we might get in trouble, but being honest is always the best choice. God wants us to be kind and fair, just like how we would want others to be truthful when they talk about us. Telling the truth helps everyone trust each other and keeps our hearts happy and clean.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • What does it mean to tell the truth about others?
  • How do you feel when someone tells a lie about you?
  • How can telling lies about others hurt their feelings or cause problems?
  • Why do you think God wants us to speak truthfully about our friends/neighbors?
  • What can you do if someone asks you to keep a secret that involves lying about someone else?

We should always tell the truth and not lie about others.

10.) You shall not covet.

You shall not covet tenth commandment tablet

Tenth Commandment Bible Verse

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” (verse 17)

Simple Explanation for Kids

God tells us to be happy with the toys, games, and things we have, and not to be upset or jealous about what other kids have. Imagine if your friend has a really cool new toy, and instead of being happy for them, you feel sad or mad because you want it too. God wants us to learn to be thankful for our own things and to celebrate when our friends have nice things too. It’s like being happy with your slice of cake at a party and not being sad because someone else’s slice looks bigger or yummier. God loves it when we share joy and aren’t wishing for everyone else’s stuff.

Practical Questions for Kids

  • What does it mean to be happy with what you have?
  • Why is it important not to be jealous of others’ things?
  • How can you celebrate someone else’s happiness or success?
  • What are some ways to show gratitude for what we have?
  • How does being thankful make us feel better?

We shouldn’t be jealous of what others have, whether it’s their toys, clothes, or anything else. Instead, we should be thankful for what we have.

Preparing the Clues

  1. Print the Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards: We’ve made it easy by creating 20 scavenger hunt clues for him. Download the scavenger hunt and cut out the clue cards. In this print-and-play set, choose the clues that fit your home and your dad’s quirks and personality to make it a better experience.  For example, if your dad doesn’t play golf, leave out the clue that would be found with the golf clubs.
  2. Personalize Your Clues: With each clue card, utilize the bonus. We added 24 Editable Coupons included in our printable set. Personalize them using the free Adobe PDF version to cater specifically to your dad’s interests and hobbies.
  3. Strategic Placement: Save the first clue card. You will keep this to start the hunt. Then hide each clue in a location that is meaningful or amusing for your dad. While the locations are already determined, consider utilizing the props around the object related to inside jokes or fond memories. Strategically place the fun clues in spots that spark nostalgia, tickle his funny bone, or challenge his inner Sherlock. For example, if one of the clues is “at the grill” leave a funny note or object on the grill with the clue. One example could be burnt buns symbolizing the last time Dad overcooked the bread and almost burnt the house down. With the placement, add a cute coupon for Dad that says “Good for One Uber Eats Meal.” Placement and personalized details are what will bring laughter and memories.

Creative Ideas for an Engaging Hunt

  • Mix Physical and Intellectual Challenges: Combine clues that require physical activity with those that need problem-solving skills. Make your scavenger hunt extra challenging when you add short puzzles like riddles, problem-solving puzzles, dad jokes he must solve, or even Sodku puzzles.
  • Incorporate Dad’s Favorites: Tailor the hunt around his favorite hobbies, books, or movies. Have small trinkets, prizes, or a hidden gift with each of the clue cards. Or have a giant gift with the last clue.
  • Involve the Whole Family: Turn it into a family affair, where each member can contribute to the planning or participate in the hunt. There is no child too small, no adult too stoic. The whole family can add a small touch and contribute to the giggles.

Making Memories That Last

This scavenger hunt is not just about finding treasures; it’s about creating lasting memories with your dad. Whether it’s for a special occasion or just a regular day, this adventure is sure to bring smiles and laughter, strengthening the bond you share.

Kids of all ages can get involved in the planning.  Remember, the key to a successful scavenger hunt lies in its personalization. By incorporating elements that are unique to your dad, you create an experience that is not only fun but also deeply meaningful. Get ready to see the joy in your dad’s eyes as he unravels each clue, uncovering the love and thought put into every step of this delightful adventure.

Essential Materials

The following materials are necessary to create your printable thankful tree craft:

  • Printable Thankful Tree Template
  • Printer
  • Printer Paper or White Cardstock (we love this brand!)
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Crayons or Markers

Once you have your template, you will need to print it on white cardstock (or paper) using a printer. Cardstock is a heavier-weight paper that will make your tree more durable.

Next, you will need scissors to cut out your tree and its branches. A glue stick is also essential to assemble your tree and attach your leaves.

Optional Enhancements

While the essential materials are all you need to create a beautiful thankful tree, there are a few optional enhancements that can take your craft to the next level. Consider adding the following to your craft:

  • Colored Cardstock: Using colored Autumn cardstock for your tree and leaves can add a pop of color to your craft.
  • Glitter: Adding glitter to your leaves can make your tree sparkle and shine.
  • Ribbon or Twine: Attaching a ribbon or twine to your tree can make it easy to hang or display.
  • Frame: Placing your thankful tree in a frame can make it a beautiful piece of decor for your home that can be shown year after year.

With these materials, you can create a beautiful and unique printable thankful tree that will remind you of all the things you are grateful for.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Thankful Tree Craft

Printing Your Tree

To begin creating your thankful tree craft, start by printing the thankful tree with leaves template on cardstock paper or printer paper.  You can choose to print out the black and white copy or the colored copy. There are multiple tree stumps, some with a Bible Verse of Thanks, others without. The thankful tree with the Bible verse is perfect for a Sunday School Lesson in the classroom.

Adding Thankful Notes

thankful tree leaves things to be thankful for

Once you have printed the template, write down things you are thankful for on your leaves.

If necessary, color the leaves and the tree.

Assembling Your Craft

The final step is to add your thankful notes to the tree. Once everything is written and colored, cut out the tree and leaves carefully with scissors.  After you have cut out your tree, it’s time to assemble your craft.

Using a glue stick, glue the thankful leaves to the tree tree with branches. Set it aside to dry.

Your printable thankful tree craft is now complete! You can also add more leaves as you think of more things to be thankful for. Hang it up in a prominent place in your home to remind you of all the things you are thankful for.

Adapting the Craft to Younger Kids

colorful thankful tree leaves

This project can easily be adapted to younger kids. With many thankful leaves, there is a lot to cut out. To adapt to younger kids, use fall-colored cardstock or construction paper and cut out leaves in bulk. Allow preschoolers to draw things they are thankful for on the pre-cut leaves. For emergent readers, they can sound out words or you can help them write their list of thanks.

Instead of cutting out the tree and branches, keep the tree on the 8.5″ x 11″ page. Kids can use a glue stick to stick the colored leaves to the sheet of paper. This will give you a finished product on a traditional-sized sheet of paper. Children can color the ground or sky as they desire.

Wrapping Up Your Craft Session

As the craft session comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the wonderful memories created while making the printable thankful tree craft. This activity is perfect for expressing gratitude and appreciation for the people, places, and things that make life special.

Before wrapping up the craft session, make sure to follow these simple steps:

  • Take a moment to appreciate the finished product. Admire the colorful leaves and the heartfelt messages written on them.
  • Display the thankful tree in a prominent place where everyone can see it. It’s a great way to remind everyone to appreciate the good things in life.
  • Clean up the craft area and put away all the materials. This will ensure that everything is ready for the next craft session.
  • Encourage everyone to share their thoughts and feelings about the activity. This will help to reinforce the importance of gratitude and appreciation.

The printable thankful tree craft is a fun and meaningful activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. By expressing gratitude and appreciation, we can create a more positive and fulfilling life.

Tips to Make Your Thankful Tree Craft More Engaging

Making a thankful tree craft can be a fun and meaningful way to celebrate the season of gratitude. Here are some tips to make your craft more engaging:

Use Colorful and Creative Materials

Using colorful and creative materials can make your thankful tree craft more engaging. Consider using different types of paper, such as patterned scrapbook paper or construction paper in various colors. You can also use different types of markers, pens, or paints to decorate the leaves and trunk of your tree. Using glitter or other embellishments can also add a fun and festive touch to your craft.

Involve the Whole Family

Making a thankful tree craft can be a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together. Encourage everyone to participate by writing down what they are thankful for on the leaves of the tree. You can also have each family member decorate their own leaf and add it to the tree. At Friendsgiving or the Thanksgiving Table, this can be a great way to start a conversation about gratitude and what everyone is thankful for.

Display Your Craft

Displaying your thankful tree craft can make it more engaging and meaningful. Consider placing it in a prominent location in your home, such as on a mantel or in a common area. You can also take a picture of your craft and share it on social media to inspire others to create their own thankful trees.

By using colorful and creative materials, involving the whole family, and displaying your craft, you can make your thankful tree craft more engaging and fun for everyone involved.
