Elf on The Shelf Christmas Tradition

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Snow Globe

Your child can place their handprint right in the center of the snow globe to show Santa where they live! You can jazz up this cute Christmas craft by adding a few touches once it is dry. First, grab a Sharpie permanent marker and decorate your handprint castle. drawing bricks and even a drawbridge door. Finally, consider adding glitter or silver & white pom-poms like falling snow.

Christmas Tree

how to make christmas tree Christmas handprint art

This handprint Christmas tree is a classic and easy-to-make project. You’ll be using several handprints to make the Christmas tree! It’s important to know how to make an adorable Christmas handprint tree. Do this in stages. Start with the bottom of the tree and do the first hand print, let it dry. Add the next hand print, let it dry. Finally, complete the last hand print at the top and… as you know… let it dry.

Tip: If you have more than one child, allow this to be a sibling craft with the largest hand at the base of the tree and the smallest chid’s hand at the top. This would make a family Christmas tree handprint craft.

Angel

how to make a angel Christmas handprint art

There is a beautiful angel that you can place your child’s handprints on. The angel uses two handprints, so this is an extra special part of the PDF. It actually makes a beautiful ornament or even tree topper after dried and laminated.

Christmas Penguins

Another fun part of the PDF are these Christmas penguins! These are so stinkin’ cute and would look great on any Christmas gift. Using a paint brush take your child’s hands and alternate green and red on their finger tips. Paint their palm a white, silver or light blue. Lay the hand to create a head. Using the opposite hand, lay the opposite hand facing toward the bottom to make the bottom of the snowman. Once dry, use googly eyes on top of the snow man or use construction paper to cute the eyes and carrot nose.

This si another opportunity for sibling Christmas handprint art, just use the larger hand on the bottom of the snowman.

Reindeer

Ways to Use Preschool Christmas Handprint Art

Christmas traditions are not only meaningful to parents but create warm memories for kids too. In addition to baking cookies and decorating the Christmas tree, add a keepsake handprint Christmas craft that you can treasure for years to come. It’s a fun activity but also a sweet reminder of how much your toddlers and preschoolers are growing up!

There are many ways that you can use handprint art, but here are a few ideas to get you started on this fun activity for kids.

Make a Holiday Card

One of the most popular ways to use handprint art is to create a homemade card. This is a great way to show off your child’s artistic skills and it also allows you to send a personal message to friends and family. You can either use handprints to create the entire Christmas card or you can use them as an embellishment.

Sayings for Christmas card handprint ideas might include…

  • Merry Christmas!
  • Our Family Tree (and the year)
  • This isn’t just a Christmas tree as you can plainly see, I made it with my hand, which is party of me! It comes with lots of love especially to say, I hope you have a merry & bright Christmas day!
  • Let it snow!
  • This is to remind you when I have grown so tall, that once I was little and my hands were very small.
  • Look very closely and you will see, that Santa’s beard was made by me! Hang this Santa on your wall, to remember when my hands were small.

Use as Holiday Decoration

Another great way to use handprint art is to create holiday decorations. You can make a garland, wreath, ornaments, or even an Advent calendar. One idea is to let these projects dry and then cut out your designs. Once cut you can laminate the art.  Either display it as is or add a hole punch and string and hang on the Christmas tree as a fun DIY ornament for kids.

This is a great way to decorate your home in a unique and personal way.

Give as a Gift

If you are looking for a unique and thoughtful gift, look no further than handprint art. You can frame a piece of artwork out of the pages in the PDF below. This is a great keepsake gift for grandparents and family members that will be cherished for years to come.

Once you make the handprint Christmas craft ideas, you’ll have plenty of ways to use them around your home.

Thanksgiving Potluck Recipes

Potlucks can be a lot of fun, particularly during the holiday season. You’re only responsible for making one dish, but you get to enjoy many dishes! And this puts less stress on the hostess—after all, putting a Thanksgiving dinner together for a large group can be intimidating!

What should I bring to a Thanksgiving Potluck?

The best thing about a fall potluck is you immediately have a theme – Thanksgiving. That makes what to bring to a  Thanksgiving potluck rather limited. Thanksgiving pot luck ideas typically include the main dishes, vegetable side dishes and a savory dessert. It’s important when planning a Thanksgiving Potluck to come up with a Thanksgiving menu. This can be done where food is already listed and people sign up or you can list the food you plan to make and bring to the party. This will ensure no one brings the same recipe – It would be a bit scary to end up with 22 roast turkey breasts (those poor birds.)

Sign Up Genuis is an excellent tool for planning a Friendsgiving Potluck with family, coworkers and/and friends. You can invite guests, have some Thanksgiving games to bring, and allow them to sign up for something from a list of Thanksgiving Potluck recipe ideas. This can include a list of Thanksgiving dishes or a list of ingredients like whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, apples and more. In this case, everyone would gather and prepare the the Friendsgiving meal ideas together.

Christmas scavenger hunt clues printable

When the holidays roll around, there’s no better way to get into the spirit of the season than by playing together with a Christmas scavenger hunt. This game is a great way to engage your entire family in some friendly competition and spend some quality time together.

Whether you want to play during a Christmas party or another holiday gathering, this guide will help you get started. Simply follow the steps and ideas below to plan your own holiday scavenger hunt that everyone will love.

What are some good Christmas Scavenger Hunt Ideas?

To add a bit more of the holiday spirit, here are a fun cute ideas that you can pick and choose from:

  • Have an Elf on the Shelf or Santa deliver the first clue.
  • Wrap the first clue as a present that’s opened on Christmas Eve.
  • Encourage your team to dress in festive holiday attire or an ugly Christmas sweater.
  • For every clue that’s solved, a team member gets to take a piece of Christmas candy or a holiday treat from the prize bowl.
  • Hide a small holiday-themed toy in with the final clue for the winner.
  • Have players carol or sing Christmas songs while they search.
  • Set up a cocoa bar to enjoy when the players find the last clue.

Now that you have all the tips and ideas for planning your own Christmas activity, let’s talk about some fun clues.

What are some clues for a scavenger hunt?

While a Christmas scavenger hunt checklist is fun (see some in our Christmas Traditions), having Christmas scavenger hunt clues is just a bit more fun. Kids will race around the house solving Christmas riddles. It just makes it more interactive and engaging.

printable christmas scavenger hunt clues cards

Take a look at some of these fun Christmas rhyming riddles we include as clue cards in our printable Christmas scavenger hunt.

Clue 1

Ready or not, this Christmas treasure hunt has begun. Find the first clue where the stockings are hung.

Clue 2

Christmas carolers sing beautifully in a choir. Go to the family car and look behind the tire.

Clue 3

Red and white stripes and a cool minty taste; these striped candies, they never go to waste!

Clue 4

To stay on Santa’s nice list, don’t be a grouch. You next clue can be found, under the cushion on the couch.

Plus sixteen more for a total of twenty Christmas clues for a scavenger hunt. You choose the order for your holiday fun.

What are good prizes for a Christmas scavenger hunt?

There are two ways to incorporate gifts or small trinkets with holiday scavenger hunt. You can have a gift with each new clue or keep a big gift, like a Christmas Eve Box, for the end of the treasure hunt.

christmas scavenger hunt ideas

Small Prizes

Small gifts are perfect for a scavenger hunt. You can have a small trinket for each scavenger hunt seeker. Christmas party favors or candy canes are perfect to place with each clue. Perhaps your small prizes can be placed together into something larger. For example, have all the ingredients and supplies needed to create a gingerbread house or cookies for Santa.

Christmas Eve Box

You might ask what’s in a Christmas Eve Box? A Christmas eve box is a gift given the day before Christmas. Often it contains Christmas pajamas, a Christmas movie, a Christmas book, hot chocolate and other night before Christmas ideas.

Christmas Presents

If you hold a Christmas scavenger hunt on Christmas morning, consider having a Christmas present with each new clue. This would make a fun Christmas morning activity for the kids and instead of the Christmas tradition of opening all the presents underneath the Christmas tree, you are moving around the house finding a new present with each clue card.

Elf on the Shelf

If you have an Elf doll, an Elf scavenger hunt is the perfect idea. Simply have your Elf on a Shelf bring the first clue and then let your kids hunt for the rest of the clues. You can use the Christmas scavenger hunt below or use a similar treasure hunt meant for an Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt.

How to Plan a Christmas Scavenger Hunt

The first step in planning a Christmas scavenger hunt is printing a copy of the Christmas scavenger hunt clues. You can download the festive printable PDF here. It contains both clues & an answer key.

Once you have those printed out, you’ll cut them apart and choose which clues work before the the locations you want to include in your Christmas scavenger hunt. You can also make sure the fun last longer by making sure you include more cards.

The cards are Christmas themed with cute patterns and rhyming clues that will take players all through out the house looking for their next clue.

The second step is to place the clues around your house, yard or apartment. You can be as creative as you want with this part. You can make it easy by placing the clues in obvious places or get creative and hide them in harder to find spots.

If you’re hiding the clues inside, we recommend that you put them in locations that are safe and not too difficult to get to. You can also pair teens or older kids with younger children, so all hunters are on an equal playing field.

The third step is to gather your family or group of friends together and explain the rules of the game. You’ll want to go over how many people will be playing, what the goal of the game is and any other important details.

Once participants understand the rules, you’ll be ready to start the game. If you’re playing as a team, when all the clues are found, the team that has found the most clues wins the game.

If you’re playing as an individual, the first person to find all of the clues and make it back to the starting point is the winner. You can even set a stop watch or give a time limit and let each person run the clues one at a time.

No matter how you play, a Christmas scavenger hunt is a great way to get everyone in on the holiday fun.

With these simple steps, you’ll have everything you need to plan your own Christmas scavenger hunt.

What is Elf on the Shelf?

What is Elf on the Shelf? This is Elf on the Shelf Explained in one minute.  Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. This holiday tradition has an Elf on the Shelf book and a Scout Elf doll. The Scout Elf book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits.

While Elf on the Shelf lives at the North Pole, he begins visiting families every Christmas season checking on naughty or nice behavior of children. The Elf on the Shelf first visits each Thanksgiving. Each family is able to name their special elf.  Each evening, Scot Elf returns from the North Pole to report to Santa on a family’s behavior. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. You must find him!

It is important VERY IMPORTANT, you do not touch The Elf on the Shelf or her/his Christmas magic will be lost! The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve.

Elf on the Shelf Rules

There are a few rules when it comes to adopting an Elf.

No matter what, Elf cannot move when you are watching. Elf on the Shelf moves at night when everyone is asleep. There may be a few occasion when Elf will need to move during the day when the kids are at school. Sometimes Elves fall asleep too. Look at our list of Reasons Elf Did Not Move plus a tip to make sure he/she moves each day.

Elf Cannot Talk

Elf is always listening, but Elf cannot talk. Tell Elf about your day, about your Christmas Wish List. You can even leave notes for Santa with Elf and he/she will deliver them at night to Santa Claus.

Elf Must Return Home at Christmas

Elf must go back to his home in the North Pole at Christmas. Look for a postcard. Elf might send you mail on his vacation or from his home! Typically Elf leaves on Christmas Eve night with Santa on the sleigh. Some elves stay and watch you open presents, returning to their home with magic the next day.

Can parents touch the elf on the shelf?

Frequently it’s asked, can adults touch Elf on the Shelf.   Parents, it’s important to follow the rules of Elf on the Shelf. Elf must never be touched. However, if Elf has an accident or falls, it is important to move Elf from any dangerous spots (for example, the floor where your pet dog might pick it up.) You can use these Magic Elf on the Shelf grippers, so parents can touch and move Elf on the Shelf without actually “touching” the Elf.

Parents may also use a gloved hand OR if Elf must be touched with the skin of a human, Elf should sit out for another 24 hours.

Attention Parents: See the list of frequently asked questions at the Official Elf on the Shelf Page.
