Homemade Bath Bombs for the Kids

Nowadays bath bombs are all the rage at beauty product stores like Macy’s, Bath & Body Works, and Sephora but unfortunately they cost an arm and a leg. The going rate is about $9/bath bomb. WHAT? That’s crazy considering you can make 4 to 6 of these at home in 5 minutes for 1/2 the price! You won’t believe how easy these are to make! Get the kids involved in the process. Make it a mini science lesson to show what you can create by mixing certain liquids and solids. What an awesome evening activity too, add a little Peace & Calming Essential Oil to help support bedtime wind-down. Then, they can use the bombs the next night before bed. They’ll love it!

For some people creating a large bath bomb, similar to the ones you see in the stores, is their plan! For that you will need to get on Amazon or head to Michael’s and pick up some clear circle molds. For the sake of my time and money I simply used cupcake molds I had in my pantry.

You can do so much with this recipe the possibilities are endless! Add a layer of fun – In the middle add a little magic grow animal pill and when the bath bomb dissolves it expands into a dolphin for the kids to enjoy! Super fun! These are great for adults too. Add chemical free food coloring if you are making these special for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or Teacher Appreciation Gifts! Hosting a birthday party anytime soon? These would make wonderful party favors!

TIP: Have all your ingredients set out ahead of time and read through these directions first so you have an idea of how to do this accurately. This recipe is quick and super affordable. It will produce 4-6 small bath bombs in a cupcake mold or 2-3 large bath bombs in the circle form.

Bath Bombs Recipe for Kids

  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup Epsom Salt
  • 3 teaspoons of water
  • 2 teaspoons of your favorite essential oil (I like to do relaxing oils so I use lavender, roman chamomile, or ylang ylang)
  • Optional: a couple drops of food coloring
  • Optional: magic grow animal pills

How to Make Bath Bombs for Kids

Just a few simple steps on how to make bath bombs for kids.

  1. Simply combined all of your dry ingredients, and whisk.
  2. In a separate bowl, combined all of your wet ingredients, and whisk.
  3. Very quickly mix the dry & wet ingredients together and whisk as fast as you can to avoid a reaction.
  4. Once you are done whisking all the ingredients together it will feel similar to damp sand.
  5. Place the mixture into your mold and pack it very full. If you are using a secret magic grow animal pill, place it in the middle of the mold as you pack!
  6. If they are in a flat mold (not ball) level off.
  7. Allow these to sit in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
  8. Store in an airtight container.

Pumping Heart Model

It’s so easy to make this working model of the heart! Craft this DIY pumping heart model with your kids for an easy and informative science experiment. With just a few supplies, you can create your very own pumping heart model for some STEM fun at home. This makes a great science lesson in the classroom, too. Enjoy!

DIY Pumping Heart Model

I used to be a teacher, so I have long had a soft spot for activities that would go great in a classroom. After Frugal Coupon Living took off, I never made it back to the classroom. Even so, my love for teaching little ones never left me! I always jump at the opportunity to make some easy science experiments with the kids on the weekends. They have fun AND learn something new, so it’s a perfect way to spend some free time in my book. Instead of teaching your kids about the human body with videos or books, let them create their own working heart model to keep them totally engaged! Hands-on activities are some of the best ways to get kids to learn valuable information and have it stick.

This pumping heart working model project doesn’t take long, but is SO cool! Plus, you probably already have all of the necessary supplies lying around your house. If not, all of the tools can easily be found at your local dollar store! Don’t spend a ton to teach your kids. I love when I can create fun experiments for the kiddos that barely cost a thing. You may even be able to identify a future doctor in your family or your class!

How does this pumping heart model work?

The human heart has four separate chambers, and this working model of the heart represents one of the heart’s chambers. The heart’s chambers pump blood into the body’s arteries, as demonstrated by the model. Every chamber has an entry point, known as the atrium, and an exit chamber, known as the ventricle. Both of these work continuously, pumping blood to keep it flowing through the body. To stop blood from going back into the chambers of the heart, valves close when the blood exits. The balloon acts as a valve in our pumping heart model, which prevents blood that exits the chamber from reentering the chamber. To make this clear to the kids, try removing the balloon from the equation and see what happens to the water.

Add this pumping heart model experiment to your weekend plans to give your kids their daily dose of STEM. It’s important to peak their interest in science and math at an early age. Who knows — it might inspire your little ones to pursue a future career in the medical or science fields!

Let me know how much you and your kiddos absolutely love this easy science experiment in the comments below. Have fun!

Questions to ask the kids:

  1. Where does the water stop inside the straws?
  2. Does water travel up inside of the covered straw?
  3. Does the water return to the jar when the balloon is released?

DIY Pumping Heart Model

Supplies you’ll need to make a working heart model:

  • One large mason jar
  • 2 balloons
  • 1 to 2 cups water
  • Food coloring, if desired (we recommend using red, of course!)
  • 2 bendy straws
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Rimmed tray or casserole dish

Directions:

DIY Pumping Heart Model

First off, mix your food coloring and water, if you choose to add it. Pour the water into the jar.

DIY Pumping Heart Model

Next, cut one balloon in half. Discard the bottom/side with the opening of the balloon.

Then place the remaining piece of the balloon loosely over one of the straws. Secure the cut edge to the straw with tape. Set aside.

DIY Pumping Heart Model

On the other balloon, cut the balloon in half to remove the narrow neck part of the balloon. Stretch the remaining part of the balloon over the mouth of the jar. Cut two tiny slits in the balloon. Secure the balloon’s cut edge to the jar with tape.

DIY Pumping Heart Model

Pressing the balloon to make the holes slightly larger, push the bottom of each straw through a hole in the balloon.

On the straw without the attached balloon cap, bend the neck so the top points down.

Next, place the jar in a rimmed baking sheet or casserole dish.

DIY Pumping Heart Model

To make the model heart work, press down on the balloon stretched over the jar. Water will flow through the uncovered straw. The straw with the balloon cap will inflate.

You’re done! You created your very own pumping heart model.

Volunteer Gifts Ideas

A collage of volunteer gift ideas with printable thank you gift tags

When I was a teacher, boy did I appreciate my classroom volunteers. Parents were amazing from coming in weekly to work with a student, to cutting up classroom supplies, to creating bulletin boards. When my girls began school, I was in the classroom weekly returning the favor. Both when I taught and when I volunteered was before Pinterest, so I had to get really creative with my Volunteer Appreciation Gifts.

Thank God for the evolution of Pinterest!

How do you appreciate your volunteers?

The point of National Volunteer week is to show a random act of kindness to your classroom helpers. Say thank you with these parent gift ideas. Purchase a plant, cake, candy bar, gift card and attach a printable thank you gift tag.

When is National Volunteer Week?

The exact dates of National Volunteer Appreciation Week vary based on the year. If looking in advance, it is typically the third week of April. For 2021, National Volunteer Week will fall between April 18 – 24th. It typically comes two weeks before Teacher Appreciation Week.

What do you do for volunteer appreciation?

You might ask yourself, what is a good gift to show appreciation? Recognizing the impact of a volunteer doesn’t have to be a grandiose event. Often small gifts of thanks show the most appreciation.

We put together a list of creative parent volunteer gifts. All offer inspiration and all a bonus, all offer printable Gift Tags for Parent Volunteers. I personally love when I can pick up a small thoughtful gift at the grocery store and attach a thank you gift tag. Easy-peasy.
