Rainy Day Activities Outdoors

It’s not that we don’t like the rain, but sometimes it leaves us feeling trapped inside with nothing to do. The good news is that there are plenty of things to do outside on rainy days! You just have to put on your rain jackets and boots, grab an umbrella, and be okay with getting a little wet. It’s all in good fun. Here are some ideas you can take out in the rain with you.

Disclosure: If you have a thunderstorm with lightning in the forecast, these are not advised.

Go on a rain walk with the kids. If you’ve never done this before, you’ll love seeing their delighted expressions as they listen to the rain, feel it on their skin, and see how different things look when they’re covered in rain droplets. Have you ever seen a spiderweb covered in the rain? It’s fascinating! | Still Playing School

Learn three easy ways to paint with rain so you can create a one-of-a-kind work of art on your next rainy day. You’ll need paper, a tray, liquid watercolors, markers, and water-soluble crayons. Color or paint your designs, put them in the tray, and take them outside in the rain to see what happens! | Picklebums

Let kids splish and splash in puddles to their hearts’ content. Puddle play is a terrific way to enjoy the outdoors on a rainy day. Just make sure the kids are properly dressed for it. Provide dishes, buckets, shovels, pipes, and other implements to encourage exploration and creative thinking. | Megan Zeni

Speaking of puddle play, the perfect rainy day isn’t complete without a little puddle jumping. It’s a great opportunity to talk about how puddles are made, what makes them dry up, and what makes the water ripple. | Fireflies and Mud Pies

Every kid should know how to make a mud pie. Instead of fussing about the mess, encourage your kids to mix up some water and dirt to make thick mud perfect for plopping into pie plates. Decorate the pies with flowers, pretty rocks, leaves, sticks, and other items found in nature. | Rhythms of Play

What better time to monitor the weather than when it’s raining? Use the ideas here to make a simple rain catcher with a “weatherman” wooden spoon that measures how much rain it has collected. | Rainy Day Mum

Here’s another version of a rain gauge made using a jumbo test tube, craft foam, and a few other craft supplies you probably have on hand already. Empty it every day and record how much rain you get over the course of a season. It’ll be fun to see how much the rain can vary from one day, week, or season to the next. | Life Over C’s

Go outside and make some sidewalk chalk art in the rain. Kids will be surprised to see how much more vibrant the colors of the chalk are when it gets wet. | Fun-A-Day

Combine sidewalk art and puddle play with this fun color puddle splash activity. You’ll need to be okay with the possibility of stains or else make sure the colors are completely washable before diving feet first into a color-filled puddle. | Lemon Lime Adventures

Sight word puddle jumping is a fantastic way for little ones to learn their sight words. When you pair movement with study, it helps the brain form new connections to the material. If you plan to do this one in the rain, you’ll want to laminate the words first. | Fantastic Fun and Learning

Rainy Day Activities Indoors

We understand that sometimes you just can’t get outdoors to enjoy the rain even though you’d like to. With the rain coming down outside, it’s not always easy to find something fun to do indoors.

But forget TV or video games—it’s time to get creative! Lucky for you, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep everyone entertained. Here are some ideas to help you get started: You can play board games with friends and family, build things out of Lego blocks or K’Nex pieces, read books together or paint pictures. There is also no shortage of craft projects that can be done by the whole family, such as making slime or tie-dye t-shirts.

We’ve listed even more craft ideas below. Some are rain-themed, while others are not. Just grab a few friends or family members, some snacks, and get ready for some quality time spent together in the comfort of your home.

First, make sure to print our indoor games for kids. These activities can keep your kids entertained, especially with a larger crowd! One great solution is Minute to Win It Games. All of which can be played inside with larger or small crows.

Curious little scientists will love this simple rain cloud in a jar experiment. You can set it up in just minutes using a jar, water, shaving cream, and food coloring. Just as clouds get too heavy and release rain, this shaving cream cloud will release the food coloring when it’s too heavy. Use blue food coloring or make a rainbow cloud with lots of different colors. | The Best Ideas for Kids

This easy rain craft for kids is simple enough for toddlers to make, but preschoolers and kindergarteners will enjoy it, too. You’ll need some cotton balls, construction paper, glue, and paint to make a cloud pouring raindrops all over the page. You could also let your kids use their fingerprints to make the raindrops instead. | Crafts on Sea

After the rain comes rainbows, and this fizzy rainbow experiment will have your kids eager to find their own! Turn Jell-O into fizzy fun with a bit of baking soda. Then, you’ll be able to do the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction we all know and love. Plus, by using Jell-O, it’ll smell amazing! | Fun-A-Day

Preschoolers can practice counting with this rain-themed sensory bin featuring cottony clouds, blue glass beads to represent raindrops, and sparkly gold pipe cleaners to make lightning. Kids will love all the different textures here—soft, fluffy, smooth, rough, etc. | Fantastic Fun and Learning

Have an indoor scavenger hunt with items you’d typically find around the house. For example, you’ll look for something that’s red, something to eat with, something with a nose, and so on. This free printable makes the scavenger hunt super easy. Just print it, grab some pencils, and everyone’s all set to go. Add a timer to make it more challenging. | Hey, Let’s Make Stuff! (see a full list of More Scavenger Hunts for Kids too.)

Rock painting is a great activity for a rainy day. Then, once it stops raining, you can add the rocks to your garden or hide them around your community if you have a local rock group. It’s always so fun when someone finds your rock. What a cool way to brighten someone’s day! | Sixth Bloom  (see more Rock Painting Ideas for Kids too!)

Build a fort in the living room! It makes family movie night a lot more fun, and it’s also a cozy hideaway for kids to go to read their books or enjoy some quiet time. | Messy Little Monster

What better time to make something for a friend than on a rainy day? DIY friendship bracelets are easy, fun, and thoughtful. You’ll need some embroidery floss in various colors, buttons, and scissors. Have a blast designing something unique for each of your BFFs or siblings. | Crafts by Amanda

Now you have loads of rainy day activities and things to do in the rain to keep you busy anytime it starts pouring outside. Pin this list to save it for later!

On the road again….

Spring break, summer break, holiday breaks. Whatever the reason, travel is around the corner and soon families will be hitting the road for vacation. Family road trips can be a great way to spend time together, but they can also be long and tedious if you are not prepared.

How do you make a car ride fun?

We asked some moms, how do you make a car ride fun? There were plenty of fun answers to make a long road trip more comfortable.

  • Charge electronics before a trip so they kids can have screen time
  • Pack a lot of snacks
  • Purchase new toys and games for a car treasure chest
  • Watch a movie on a car screen
  • Download audio books
  • Plan pit stops at fun places

While we agree with many of these ideas, some of them could become quite costly. Instead of adding everything to a very expensive online shopping cart…. Instead of everyone putting on head phones and looking at their tablets…. Put the electronics down and try some low-cost verbal games with your family.

We put together some fun car games for families you can print today! What makes this set of 12 road trip games unique is that they require very few supplies. They are also perfect car boredom busters creating family fun for everyone – young and old.

Road Trip Games to Play in the Car

When it’s time to plan your next road trip, don’t get caught without a plan to keep everyone busy. Some popular road trip games include I Spy, 20 Questions, The Alphabet Game, The License Plate Game, The Counting Game, and Road Trip Bingo.

Here’s a quick overview of how to play car games listed in our printable set.

I Spy: This classic game is perfect for young children and can be played by anyone. One person starts by saying, “I spy with my little eye something that is (color, shape, texture, etc.).” The other players then have to guess what object the first person is thinking of.

20 Questions: This game is similar to I Spy, but instead of describing an object, the player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The other players then get to ask 20 questions to try to figure out what the player is thinking of.

The Alphabet Game: The goal of this game is to spot objects in alphabetical order staring with letter a, then letter b and so on. For example, you might see an Acura, balloon, and cat. The next person would then have to find something that starts with the letter D.

The License Plate Game: This game is played by looking for license plates from different states. The first person to spot a license plate from every state wins the game. It’s hard to get 50 state tags when you involve Hawaii and Alaska!

Animal Name Game: Perfect their spelling you start listing this series of animals. Let the fun continue when each player list the name of an animal that starts when the ending letter of the alphabet from the pervious animal listed. See if you can stump the next player!

Car Cricket: Pay attention to the color of cars and try to score the most points when you are up to bat. This game has no skill but see who will get lucky racking up their points to 100 winning the game first.

Connections: Connect words in this fun ongoing game. It will be quite insightful to see how the whole family sees different words and how different things string together in their mind making each invidudal unique.

Conversation Starters: Get to know your family with these conversation starters. Perfect for the dinner table, they also can be used in the car for road trip fun!

Sing a Long String a Long: Warm up your vocal chords and try to catch a tune. String the line of a song with a new song when you connect words from lyrics

I’m Going on a Picnic: In this game, the first player lists something they are bringing on a picnic. The second person repeats their items and adds one of their own items. The game continues with a string of items added to the picnic basket. (Don’t worry – it doesn’t have to fit inside, get creative with ideas!)

Impersonation: See if you can identify the actor or character your carmate is impersonating!

Alphabet Categories: MORE

What makes these the best car games is they can easily be adapted to younger kids, older kids and even adults. In fact, I was reminiscing playing with my youth group leader as a teen driving cross country. That means, both a 15 year old and 35 year old found this engaging and fun!

These frugal friendly games are mostly spoken word games. So the driver can use his/her mind and engage on the fun too. When a checklist is needed, a passenger can keep track of their score.

Easy Indian Dinner Recipes

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that the country of India is apart of both my husband’s and my heart. It’s kind of shocking if you look at both of us. My husband has no idea how many generations back his American family goes and I am a first generation American with a Cuban born father. Why India?

Well my husband spent almost a year living in India. Once, with Campus Crusade for Christ another time with work. The people became a part of his heart and before we got married, I promised him I would take a trip over there. It took our 5th wedding anniversary for me to finally got there but instantly our hearts had another thing in common, our love for India and it’s people.

Because of that love, a common Google search for our family (okay really me, because I am the cook) …

What should I eat for dinner tonight Indian?

If you want to take your taste buds on a trip across the world, enjoy  some of the most popular Indian recipes. I’ve gathered some of our family’s favorite easy Indian dinner recipes so you too can enjoy flavorful Indian spices of cumin, clove, cinnamon, turmeric, coriander, and cayenne. Use these fun recipes for your family or at your next dinner party.

Indian Spices Tip: a few things you should know about Indian spices 1.) Indian dishes use a lot of spices, so buy in bulk or large quantities. 2.) Quality Indian spices on line are not cheap. Look around, but don’t be intimated by the sticker price. Trust me, the flavor is worth it! I personally like the Rani Brand Spices.

What is the most popular food in India?

One important fact about India is there is a northern and southern region and Indian cuisine can vary by locations. The difference between southern and northern Indian food? North Indian food get’s it’s influence from countries it borders and includes thick curries, kebobs including chicken and lamb as common meats. Southern Indian food is vegetarian-focused with lentils, beans, vegetables, and rice. Southern Indian recipes have coastal influences like fish and shrimp as well as touches of coconut milk thinning out curries.

Best Indian food for dinner

Common Indian foods for dinner include…

  • Butter Chicken
  • Naan Bread
  • Biryani
  • Tandoori Chicken

  • Aloo Gobi

Let’s get started with these easy dinner recipes for families. Don’t worry, we will find things that aren’t too spicy but are spicy enough. These are Indian dishes are second to naan (insert pun). We have used in our home with our kids from as little as 9 months. They will be loved by kids and adults, for your immediate family and guests.

Easy Indian Recipes with Chicken

I really appreciate crock-pot Indian dinner recipes. It allows time for the Indian spices to simmer in the meats. This flavorful Slow Cooker Butter Chicken recipes is made with cauliflower. It is delicious, low carb, and a keto-friendly recipe. | Well Plated

Part of eating a northern Indian recipe includes chicken on a stick. Tandoori chicken originated in the northern Indian city of Delhi, the national capital of India. This Tandoori Indian Chicken Kebab Recipe is flavorful and pairs well with a homemade tzatziki sauce (Indian yogurt sauce with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, and herbs.) | Whole and Heavenly Oven

Bamboo Skewer Tip: Always soak bamboo skewers in water before grilling.

Fun fact, some say Chicken Tikka Masala originated in Scotland. Whether you agree with this tale or not, we can all agree today Chicken Tikka Masala is known as a classic Indian dinner recipe. This slow cooker chicken tikka masala is the homemade version you’ve been dreaming of… Let it simmer all day in the Crock-pot for a bold, richly flavored Indian dish. | The Chunky Chef

One of the most popular southern Indian dishes is Biryani.  While I will be truthful in saying nothing Biryani is easy, this is the easiest Biryani recipe we have been able to find that tastes most like our favorite Hyderabad restaurant, Paradise Biryani! Ready for meaningful mealtime conversation? These dinner conversation starters are what you need! Download and print 65+ engaging topics and questions that are a perfect fit for connection at the dinner table. Set includes blank cards to add your own relevant questions.

Best Dinner Conversation Starters for Families

Dinnertime is a valuable time of the day to connect as a family. It’s a time to share how your day went, to catch up on news, and to enjoy each other’s company. Dinnertime conversation starters are a great resource to keep the conversation flowing and to prevent awkward silences.

Coming up with topics of conversation can be tough, especially for kids. Often small talk occurs but we don’t get to the root of who our child is. We miss this occasion and before we know it days have turned to years and we are waving good-bye in the review mirror as they drive off to college.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of family dinner conversation starters that will help get the conversation flowing around the table. Turn regular family dinners into a favorite family activity.

Why are Family Dinner Conversation Starters Important?

printable family dinner conversation starters for the dinner table

Family dinner conversation starters are important because they help families connect with each other. They provide a way to share news, catch up on what’s going on in each other’s lives, and enjoy each other’s company.

In addition, family dinner conversation starters can help prevent awkward silences and to encourage friendly talks about important topics and lighthearted conversations that make a big impact on family bonds.

How to Use Family Dinner Conversation Starters

There are many ways to use family dinner conversation starters. They can be used as icebreakers to get the conversation started, or they can be used to keep the conversation going if it starts to lull. The important thing is to find a way to use them that works for your family.

Some families like to go around the table and have each person share one thing about their day. Others like to pick one conversation starter and discuss it as a family. And still others like to use conversation starters as a way to get to know new family members or friends.

Simply print and cut the cards. Add them to a bowl and use as you’d like for a routine dinnertime. You could also make a conversation starter jar. Fold the cards, insert in the mason jar and keep it lidded on the dinning table.

Alternatively, get creative with how you use these cards. Is it a holiday or special time of year? Incorporate the holiday into how you use the conversations. For example, during Easter put a different conversation card in plastic Easter eggs. Put all the eggs in an Easter basket in the center of the table. During the lent season, a family member can draw and an Easter Egg and you can go over different dinner questions during the spring season.

What are Some Good Family Dinner Conversation Starters?

How many times do you use the question “How was your day today?” in a year? For me, I use it daily and often forget to use my pocket full of reliable conversation starters for kids. While it’s great to know about their day, go deeper than asking such a generic question.

Some good family dinner conversation starters include:

  • Did anything interesting happen at school/work?
  • What are you looking forward to this weekend?
  • What was your favorite part of the day?
  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
  • What was the best thing that happened to you today?
  • Tell me about your friends.
  • Who do you admire most and why?
  • What was the best thing about your day?
  • What do you like the most about the person sitting to your left?
  • What is the funniest thing that happened to you this year?
  • If you could turn someone nice – who would it be?
  • How would your pet describe you?
  • What is your favorite family tradition and why?
  • If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?

These including funny conversation starters but also deeper conversation starters where you really dig into your child and spouse’s heart. What are are their fears, hopes, desires, dreams?

Dinner Conversation Starters Printable

Erase the awkward silence and create a memory your kids will pass on to their kids. To help get the chatter going, we’ve designed a easy to use printable that you can print out, cut apart, and leave on the table for family dinners.

There are 69 conversation starters and once you use them all, you can go back through the cards- the answers will change over time and depending on who is answering the question. For example, “What was your last thought before going to sleep last night?”

Family Conversation Starters Printable Cards

These helpful cards help your family get deep with these discussion starters that are great for both kids and adults. In this Family Conversation Starter Cards Printable PDF Set, there are 69 convo starters and a blank page of 24 so you can add your own questions. Print the blank page as many times as you’d like to create personalized starters for your family or the time of year.

Make time for people who make time and learn more about friends and family at dinner time! Pull out some of the cards and use when hosting a dinner party, for Thanksgiving dinner or even Christmas dinner party. A good friend and party guests might enjoy reliving their earliest memory, dream job, favorite holiday, biggest regret, most desired superpower or favorite movie. They also make great conversation ice breakers for adults and kids alike. It’s the perfect time to use the blank cards to add topics and questions that are a fit for those individuals you are hosting. It’s sure to bring the laughter.

Do your kiddos dream about running their own business? With the warmer months here, these printable Lemonade Stand Signs can easily make their entrepreneur dreams come true! They’re also super fun for pretend play at home, also! These printables are perfect for spurring the creation of all their lemonade stand ideas!

printable lemonade stand signs

Doesn’t every child dream of running their own lemonade stand? It’s one of those outdoor activities that show they’re capable, ambitious, and creative – all at once! These printable lemonade stand signs are a super fast and easy way for the kids to create their very own summer business idea easily and with minimal effort.

These printable lemonade signs are brightly colored and sure to catch the eye of anyone who happens to be driving or walking by. All that is left is for the kids to make homemade lemonade, grab a few supplies, and set a price point for what they’re going to be selling it for.

The lemonade stand banner is perfect for hanging in front of the table, and they can even keep track of every glass sold with the printable tracker page, too! Talk about a way to get their minds working during the summer months!

This lemonade printable packet is perfect for teaching them lifelong skills revolving around customer service and learning how to earn money. And if you need stellar lemonade recipes, check out my Copycat Chick-fil-A Lemonade Recipe and Pink Lemonade Recipe.

How much does a lemonade stand cost?

Lemonade stands are not cheap plus they take up lots of storage. If you purchase a lemonade stand, you likely will be paying more than the revenue you end up making in your sales. Lemonade stands start at around $50 and can go all the way up to $400 if you get a custom lemonade stand on Etsy.

Alternatively, you can make your own DIY Lemonade Stand using an upcycled wooden pallet. You can also purchase a cute lemonade stand table cover you can quickly toss in the wash at the end of your event.

Where is a good place to set up a lemonade stand?

It’s all about visibility! Anywhere where there is good foot traffic or cars that are driving by is a great place to set up the stand. Just be sure that you’re in an area where it’s safe for the kids and that they’re away from the side of the road and traffic.

Another great idea for a lemonade stand is to have it at the end of your driveway or in your front yard. That way, it’s off the road but still visible to everyone who is passing by.

Under Construction Party Ideas

Under Construction Party Ideas

In October we had my son’s second birthday. I was sure it was going to be a Thomas the Train party and so we purchased the most adorable  2 year old train shirt. In addition to my purchase, I did amazing research on making the perfect train party. I tend to do that. Posts that go up on my blog are because we are moving and I need moving hacks or because I am expecting a baby after a big gap in my children and need reminders of newborn tips. I digress…

The Construction Cake

So my son’s two year old birthday rolled around and after purchasing our train shirt, I went on a hunt to find the most appropriate cake at our grocery store (I am frugal, I wasn’t headed to a stand alone bakery.) The train cakes were not cute, so we settled on a bulldozer cake and thus our party went from a cute little train theme to a  Constriction Party with a precious little boy in a train shirt!… I am proud to say, I didn’t care!

Now that the party is behind us, I decided to go ahead and get that Construction Themed Birthday Party on the blog because getting things done late work when you are mother of five!
