What do you do at camping?

While the fresh air and a new atmosphere is quite distracting, it’s important to have a list of things to do when camping. From campfire hot dogs to campfire cinnamon rolls, meals can be quite fun but what do you do in between eating.  A few activities for camping include flashlight tag, making campfire s’mores, shadow puppets, nature crafts, and DIY constellation viewers.

Camping food makes us all happy but in between those bites, add hikes, crafts, and of course games. We also have a list of 13 camping games that you print out and take with you to play while spending time in nature! Whether you are camping with kids or adults, there are lots of options for group game night.

These boredom buster games will keep everyone entertained for hours on end-and you won’t even need Wi-Fi!

Fun Camping Games printable with Instructions and Supply List

Face the Cookie

In this fun minute to win it game, each person is given a cookie with the goal of getting it from their forehead to their mouth without dropping it. This game is perfect for those that like time limits.

Spoons

This traditional game is all about speed. You need a deck of cards and a fun concoction.  Players quickly pick up and pass cards in an attempt to get 4 of a kind. When someone gets four of a kind, they grab a spoon. Everyone grabs a spoon leaving someone without, and earning them a letter. The last person to spell out SPOONS wins!

Fire Tender

Sitting in a circle, teams try to sneak a stick or other fire starting item from in front of the blindfolded “fire tender” without being caught. The team with the most sticks at the end of the game is the winner.

Pass the Water

This water minute to win it game is perfect for a hot day, the goal is to have the most water in your bucket before the game ends. But be careful, keeping the water in the cup (and staying dry) is not as easy as it sounds!

Scavenger Hunt

Nothing is more exciting than a scavenger hunt in the dark! Work together to collect everything on your list before the other teams using your flashlight.

You can also check out our Camping Treasure Hunt with Scavenger Hunt Riddles.

Sardines

You might remember this game from summer camp! Play this backwards version of hide-n-seek by looking for the person hiding. Last one to find the hidden “sardine” becomes the sardine. Just try not to laugh and give your hiding spot away!

Charades

Like the traditional game, teams will take turns acting out camping terms on the cards to earn a point and win. Bragging rights are on the line, so teammates but not be afraid to shout out your guesses.

Sleeping Bag Races

Ready for a relay race? Hop to the finish line the fastest, using your sleeping bag to win. You can also substitute trash bags if you’re worried about getting your bed dirty. First team to finish declares victory.

Flashlight Tag

Pick a person to be “it” and let the fun begin! Players will try to avoid being “tagged” with the beam of light from the flashlight or risk being out. Last one standing wins!

I’m Going on a Camping Trip

This throwback to the childhood “Going on a Bear Hunt” game is all about memory. the First play lists something they would take camping… even if it is silly like a pineapple. Each player names something that they will take on their camping trip. Then the person after them lists the items from before and adds their item to the list.

Pass the Banana

It’s time to get sneaky with this hilarious game. Sitting in a circle, players have to pass the fruit without the person in the middle of the circle seeing them.

The best thing about many of these new camping game ideas is that they can be played using common items found at a campsite like spoons, a tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, water, cookies and more. Very little items need to be back and the ones that you do need to purchase, are low-cost and can fit in a duffle bag! They will not take up room in your trunk to pack.

Camping Games PDF

Ready to bring the entertainment on your next camping trip? I know you’re going to love these printable camping games for kids and adults! They’re fun, laughing inducing activities that are easy to plan and quick to pull together with very little money out of pocket. Careful, you might be assigned the entertainment coordinator for all parties and events. (That’s okay, we can make this an easy task with plenty of party & outdoor games.)

Newborn Hacks, Tips and Tricks

Wondering where to keep baby medicine? Have a safe place to keep all your medical supplies and needs? What is it that babies need anyways? Take a look at this DIY Baby Medicine Cabinet from The Gifty Girl. The only thing in this list I would add is the Baby Nasal Aspirator from NoseFrida (Don’t knock it! I learned about this with baby #3, #4, and #5!)

Quickly change crib sheets in the middle of the night with this hack. Layer crib bedding with a mattress protector, crib sheet, mattress protector, and crib sheet. This will help with diaper blow outs or middle of the night sickness. we have tried this and it worked great! These are mattress protector musts, also great for changing tables! More baby ideas from Two Twenty One.

Pumping? Make your own DIY Breast Pump Bra with this idea from Lil Miss. It still provides some modesty! This could save you about $30 (the price of a pumping bra, especially if you can find a cheaper sports bra.) One way to keep your nipples covered, is to put on these LilyPadz (I use these under my swimsuits even when I am not nursing or pregnant!)  This would allow you to keep the bra on all day. If you are someone that wants to use pumpkin bra you wear only when nursing, of all five of my kids – this was my favorite pumping bra!

Listen – repeat and remember this… command hooks are your best friend! Organize baby bibs, put a command hook on the back of your baby’s high chair to say organized. I have yet to try this but it is on my list of things to do! Other things I organize with command hooks are hats, belts, scarfs, headbands, towels, etc. | Source.

If you need to store breast milk in the fridge, follow this breast milk store hack.  Grab TWO Dr. Brown’s formula mixing pitcher (not to make formula). Instead pour your breast milk in one container. You will pour from the container to your bottles. I kept a row of bottles to have for the day and excess went in the pitcher to make for the next day. The second pitch is for washing or for “newer” breast milk. I used the excess breast milk and frozen it (see tip below) in these storage milk bags. The handle on the pitcher is great for mixing fatty milk and watery milk making each bottle a good mix of your different types (hindmilk and foremilk) of breast milk.

Does your newborn baby have gas? Relieve newborn gas in the stomach with this method. It worked for my little kids! Video of how to relieve baby gas Source.

Keep a door silent when you sneak out of the room with this no-sew door latch cover. You will love this, it keeps baby from crying when they hear the door shut! Has anyone tried this? Idea from Project Nursery. Prefer to buy, this affordable door latch cover is what we have it is works perfectly! My youngest kids are 3 and 4 and I still use it!

Have a lot of baby food pouches that are hard to store? Try this hack – Baby Food Pouch Slider! It is the perfect way to organize baby food. (Also seen in our Life Hacks)

Organize diapers in a pretty way. Having had a baby, this cart is genius and I love the idea. I feel like I have 1000 places for changing diapers in the home, so this keeps everything together and let’s you roll it along.  You can get many different colors here. Idea on Love Laugh Mirch

Keep track of your baby’s medicine calendar with this Sharpie idea from Lovezilla. This I have to give a try – genius!

Follow this newborn hack for how to give a newborn medicine. Additionally, if you need to give medicine, do it with a pacifier that has a hole cut in the tip!  As an added tip, no baby enjoys taking medicine. I gradually insert medicine into their mouth. As they take some, I rub their neck (Adam’s apple area) to get them to swallow. | Source.

EVERY. CHILD. HAS. CHEWED. OUR. CRIB. Make your own no-sew teething guard for baby’s crib. You had me at no-sew! I cannot begin to tell you how much this idea would have saved me in repainting the crib with my middle child. You will need some flannel for this project, make sure it match your crib or grab a coordinating nursery color! Idea from Jane Marie Mom Blog.

Teething or need some extra soothing? Make mother’s milk breast milk popsicles and pacifier bites with this tutorial. I have tried this with water and it worked great! A frozen wash cloth (keep stored in a Ziploc bag when freezing) is also an amazing tip! Source.

Need to store breast milk? Organize your frozen milk in an old soda box. I did this with my third and it was such a perfect idea! Notice how the layer below the soda boxes is laying flat. Using cooking sheets, first lay your milk flat and freeze. Then move the frozen milk up to the soda can boxes to store!  These were my favorite storage milk bags, even though it was not the brand of pump I was using. They stood up, allowing me to pour milk. Another tip, when you thaw the milk, consider thawing it in another bag – for example, put the frozen milk in an empty milk bag. This is in case the frozen bag acquired a hole. It will prevent loss of frozen breast milk as it thaws (You can cry over lost milk!) Idea from Fit Mommy Diaries.

DIY bottle holder. Aid a bottle feeding with a Rhino Toys Oball Baby Bottle Cage – cut a larger hole in the top and snuggly insert the bottle. It’s easier for the baby to grip the ball than the bottle. My twin mom groups have SWORE by this baby bottle holder. Always be present when the baby is taking milk. Source.

Note: Babies have died being unattended while being bottle fed. Always monitor your babies when they get a bottle. Do not leave them alone.

Don’t let baby gates mess up your stair rails or walls with this method. If you want to know our favorite baby gate (we have five different ones in the house) it is this easy close, easy open baby gate! Source.

As baby gets older, follow the steps of this Baby Proofing Checklist. Off our outlet covers, these are my favorite. These have been great for our kitchen cabinets. They are not the prettiest, but they do the job. I leave my Tupperware cabinet not locked. There are no sharp objects in there and it is fun for the kids to play in! When a lot of kids are in the tub, you will want a bath spout cover. I have bought so many that did not fit. This was was pretty flexible to fit any spout.  List from Hello Bee.

Go shoe shopping without the kids. Trace their feet for measurements before you go! This is the perfect shoe hack for kids. Idea from A Beautiful Ruckus.

How to protect bath toys from mold. If you do not own one, go ahead and buy a hot glue gun. You will be using it for the next 18 years! Keep bath toys clean by covering the hole with hot glue. This keeps out mold and other bacteria spots. Idea from We Love Being Moms.

Yes, Yes, Yes to this baby sleep chart. It is right on. How much does baby sleep? Take a look at this chart to get a general idea for ages and stages and lengths of sleep. Print this out, put it on your refrigerator. Most moms are shocked how much a newborn sleeps (in the day!)  Chart from She Knows.

Bed rail pool noodle hack. Transitioning to a toddler bed, keep the kids from falling out with this trick – a fitted sheet and pool noddle, who knew?! It’s a lot cheaper than this bed guard rail we bought (though it worked great!) Source.

Fresh air can be everything to a fussy baby! Cover your baby with a fitted crib sheet over a Pack ‘n Play to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away. Source.

Teaching a toddler to put on shoes? Easily identify left and right shoes. Put a sticker that is cut in half in your toddler’s shoes. You can also buy toddler shoe stickers! Idea from One Creative Housewife.

white-onesie-hack

Onesie Hack for Diaper Explosions. Did you realize why onesies have envelope folds in the shoulders, this trick works wonders for an explosive diaper! Speaking of onesies, grab a bunch of white onesies. Baby looks adorably cute in them and they can be bleached – you will learn why bleach is your best friend (especially if baby doesn’t have sensitive skin!)  Watch the Video.

Easy Baby Sign Language Basics

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

July 11, 2020 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Baby, Facebook, Instagram, Parenting, Pinterest, Printable, Social Media Leave a Comment

There has never been a better time to start. Easy Printable Baby Sign Language Cart – 25 Basic Signs and Words For Moms. Teaching young children sign language gestures has never been easier. Details on how and when to start early communication. Instantly download six baby sign language printable charts custom to your own style.

Easy Baby Sign Language Basics

Easy Sign Language for Babies

What is baby sign language?

Baby Sign Language is the use of hand motions and gestures to communicate with infants and toddlers. This language of movement takes place prior to spoken language development to share emotions, desires and objects.

Sign language for babies is used to communicate with young children before speech is formed. It is a language that is not only used for those with hearing loss or difficulty. ASL baby sign language can prevent cries for babies who don’t have the words to express themselves. It also has the benefit of connecting auditory learning (via verbal communication) and kinesthetic learning (via the use of movement and motions.)

Is baby sign language the same as ASL?

What does ASL mean? In the case of sign language, ASL is an acronym for American Sign Language. ASL is one of many sign languages. Like spoken language, different countries use different sign language. Our baby sign language instruction chart is ASL.

When to start baby sign language

It is never too early for a baby to learn signs for early communication. Through sign language, communicating with preverbal children can began before speech envelopment occurs. The earlier you introduce sign-language, the more familiar your child will be when they have the motor skill to sign back to you. Babies as young as six months of age can benefit from sign language to express what they are feeling.

When you begin introducing food is a great time to start teaching sign language to babies. Start signing five simple words. Eat. More. Please. Finished. Thank you.

How to Teach Baby Sign Language

How to to teach baby signing

It is very simple and easy to teach baby sign language. Your baby will watch you sign the words and hear you say the word. Sign the word and say the word multiple times and then perform the action. For example, if I see my child has finished their Cheerios, I might say and sign more three times before I had my child more cheerios.

As you progress, you can sign and say the word then take your child’s hand and gently teach them the action. Say and sign more three times. After you do that, take your child’s hand and gently say and sign more with your voice and their hands. Repeat three times. Then hand your child “more” (in our example, the Cheerios.)

Repeat these same steps with all the new words you introduce. Start small, mastering a few simple words and skills. As your child becomes familiar with these basic signs, introduce more signing motions and gestures.

Examples of Baby Sign Language Basics

Start with some common phrases. In our family we began with these five examples of baby sign language basics.

More: Bring your thumbs and fingertips together, to make flat O shape. Then, bring your hands together and pull them apart repeatedly.

Finished: Open your palms and spread your fingers. Face your palms toward you and twist your wrists a couple of times.

Drink: Make your fingers and thumbs in the shape of a C like a cup. Plus the C on your chin and tilt the C toward your mouth as if drinking a cup.

Thank You: Place your fingers together and extend your thumb. Touch you fingers to your chin and bring your fingers forward as if blowing a kiss.

Please: Place your fingers together with thumb extended. Rub your fingers on your chest in a circular motion.

Eat: Place your fingers and thumb together in a pinching motion (as if making a duck bill or birds beak). Put your fingers and thumbs to your lip with the top of your hand facing outward. Repeat the motion as if feeding yourself with pinched fingers.

It’s important when you sign the motion, you also speak the motion for hearing babies and for non hearing babies. Hearing babies will connect the sound and motion. Non hearing babies will connect the motion and lips.

For additional resources, take a look at this Video Signing Dictionary.

Even with my three boys (ages 4, 4, 5) I find myself uses these basic signs in communication as part of their everyday interactions. Just a matter of habit.

Overall, give yourself some grace. The sign language gestures that you use in your home can be personalized to your family. What sign language motions work for your home? Even if they are different from ASL or any other foreign sign language, they fit for your family. Your child will not go to Harvard University based on the wrong signs they learned at 6 months of age!

Date Night Ideas – How We Do It With Five Kids!

We do it! We have weekly date nights even with five kids. Take a look at these Date Night Ideas for the home, for free, or even for special occasions out of the house. Where to find a babysitter, why date nights are important and more!

Date Night Ideas

This post isn’t late. I know Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but having a date night is more important than just on February 14th. When my husband and I first got married, date nights were not very important to me. I know that sounds silly. Honestly, coming from being a single mom, I was just grateful to have a partner to sit at home with me at the family table. I had had my fair share of dates during that time I was a single mom.

My husband, however, he wanted to court his wife. That reads incredibly sweet but it was a bit of a stressor to me. So I didn’t initially view it as sweet. I viewed it as adding something additional to my plate, I viewed it was having to get dressed and put on makeup, I view it as work to prepare the kids and try to get out the door… you get it moms, right? The perfect date for me was more like April 25th – not too hot and not too cold! Haha!

However, he was right. It wasn’t a date on the calendar, it was what we invested in each other. The more infrequent our dates become, the more I can feel the stress on our marriage. We needed to invest at least a few hours of alone time in our marriage without the distraction of kids, tv, chores, etc in the home.

Thus, began, our weekly date nights.

Date Night 101

When you need a date night, but don’t know how to go about it, you may need Date Night 101. Dating your spouse is important, especially if you have kids. It’s easy for your relationship to fall to the wayside. Focusing on each other for a certain amount of time each week can really help your relationship grow. I’ve tried to cover every aspect of a date night to help make it successful for you and your spouse.

Date Night Bucket List

What if you have a sitter but you don’t know where to start with WHAT to do? I want you to check out my Date Night Bucket List. This is a list of items will help you narrow down exactly what you want to do! It’s fun to get ideas from a bucket list and then execute those ideas.

Free Date Night Ideas

What if you have a sitter but need to stay on budget? There are lots of free date night ideas out there. Some ideas that I have for a free date night is making dinner at home, taking a walk at the park, taking a hike in your favorite park, head to a local book store and look at the books, go to a free museum, head to the beach, play a sport together, or just sit and talk!

You can see more free date nights in our Date Night Bucket List.

Elaborate Date Night Ideas

Sometimes you need a fancy night out. Maybe you and your spouse haven’t been out in a while and you just want to do something fun together without worrying about money. We do a date like this at least once every few months.

  • Do a weekend away
  • Wine tasting
  • A night out on the town
  • Go to a fancy restaurant
  • Ballroom dancing

Date Night at Home Ideas

A few truths. It’s possible that you won’t be able to find a babysitter, but you still need that quality time with your spouse. Go ahead and look into date night ideas right at home. Dating your mate is important, and it doesn’t need to be difficult.

Here are a few date night ideas at home to help you out:

  • Have a BBQ after the kids go to bed
  • Cook a dinner together, right at home
  • Have a dessert night where you eat your favorite desserts
  • Have a game night at home
  • Order takeout
  • Have a movie night
  • Have a game night together
  • Sit on the patio and have cocktails
  • Tell Alexa to play romantic music.

If you are feeling the love, try a Date Night Box Subscription or Date Night Cards.

Some of these Date Night at Home Ideas are creative and fun, also make an effort to go out. I really fought my spouse hard to have more date nights at home, but he was right in his rebuttal. I exclusively focus on him if I am away from my home. I am tried at home, I have a long list of things to do, and the kids will all fight for my attention. While, on the occasion or even season, it is okay, hire a sitter to help you get out of the house.

Where to Find a Babysitter

Finding a babysitter can be well… interesting. We have had a few that clearly were not a fit. You have seen that Luvs Second Kid Babysitter commercial, right? On some nights, this was me!

If you don’t have family close and can’t rely on someone you know to watch your kids, this can be hard! There are some solutions to finding a babysitter.

Split Your Kids Among Friends: It may be hard for one friend to take on all of your kids, so split them up! All the kids don’t need to be together in order for the parents to getaway.

Trade Babysitting Nights: Trade babysitting with another mom. While this can be harder, it is possible to make it work.

Word of Mouth: You can ask friends for a referral to one of their favorite babysitters. Word of mouth is always the best way to hire someone. I have also asked around and found babysitters  in church nursery and have even found some on local Facebook groups.

Stalk the Park: Don’t think I am kidding. My kids were playing at the park one day and I observed a babysitter with another child. She was doing great and I thought, she would be a perfect fit for my kids. She was with a a year before going to college!

Care.com

Sometimes the best way to find a babysitter is to head to Care.com to find one. If you don’t have family in the area, it’s best to choose a platform like this that can help you find someone that fits your style. Not all babysitters are easy to find. Care.com will help cut out the middleman and help you find a babysitter that can make those date nights a reality.

Care.com is how we found our Nanny. We had a nanny for two years before our three boys were old enough to attend preschool. For us it was more affordable than full time preschool. She also was so incredibly helpful by making dinner, running errands, doing small chores, etc.

Have you heard someone say, we or I don’t have time for that? The truth is as moms, there are some things we really don’t have time for, but we do have time for what we put first. My advice to you is to make date night a priority. If you don’t, they will never happen. When they have time to happen (like the kids are all finally out of the house), you might look at your spouse and think – who is this man? Don’t let that happen. Don’t grow part, make your marriage first.

Whether you do date nights at home or hire a sitter, use these tips to help you date night happen with your spouse.

Pampers Easy Ups at Sam’s Club

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

June 27, 2019 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Baby, Coupons Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Pampers at Sam’s Club. The opinions and text are all mine.

Three of my five kids are potty trained. Well, almost three. We have been working on one…

Potty training is not like jumping on a bike. Every time that I prepare for a new child entering the field of “child meet potty” I have to prep myself. Yes, you guys, this is just as hard for mom! Additionally, each child is unique. Some are smart (disclosure, all my kids are smart) and some are not as over achieving (I will not mention names.) Also, with all three kids, I have done it at a different age, and that makes all the difference!

With my oldest, I potty trained right before she reached the age of two. She did fine. She is/was a type A personality, but there was some verbal communication that would have been nice for her to have. With my second child, I waited until almost 3 and a half. This was not because she wasn’t ready, it was because I wasn’t ready. Having waited, I can say that she got it the quickest of all my children! With the third, he is 2 and a half. Our nanny was ready so inevitably, he had to be ready too. And he has done great, but mastering the skill of #2 has led to some days of constipation for fear of using the potty.

A few tricks I can share are go all in. The day you decide to do it, take off the diaper and don’t turn back. We normally hang around the home naked for a few days. A lot of juice and we set a timer every 20 minutes. If he/she doesn’t go at 20 minutes, then the new timer is 5 minutes until potty is done and we reset to 20 minutes. Going number two, is a bit more challenging. Begin to look for clues in bowel movement behavior. My boy would hide and begin to hold his bottom with his hand. We did a lot of reading on the potty. Often children are going from standing up to sitting down, so knowing how to use the muscles in a new position takes thought.

Rewards. Rewards vary by family and child. Initially, our reward was an M&M for successful potty trips. Because I am a sucker for this blue eyed, blonde haired boy, he got a truck for a successful number 2 on the toilet. He is a smart boy and really struggled with victory over number two (sometimes your kids who over think, over think on the potty too!) This construction truck was his reward! Other reward systems I have done, have been sticker charts. One potty we owned, sang a song every time my child used the potty (that became quickly old, though!)

One of the hardest areas to master with potty training is night. One suggestion I have, is limit drinks before bed. Have the last drinks about 1 to 2 hours before you put your child down. Have your child empty his/her bladder before they go down for the night. With two of my three children, I would remove them from bed at my bed time (normally around 10 or 11) and carry them to the potty. I would not wake them but would whisper in their ear, go potty. I did this for years!

Birthdays are fun, why not celebrate the half!? These Half Birthday Party Ideas are perfect for the young and hold – ages 6 months to 100 years plus!

Half Birthday Party Ideas

Half Birthday Party Ideas

It seems like adding a celebration for every day of the year is becoming a think. We have son’s day, cat day, national love a tree day. I might be making some of these up, but official holidays are picking up and a half birthday celebration is too.

When is my half birthday?

You might be asking what’s a half birthday?  Basically a half birthday is a unique and special date to everyone. It can be found by adding six months to your birthday and celebrating the halfway milestone.  Need help finding your half birthday mark? You can use a handy half birthday calculator to help you find your special date. Often this themed party is recognized for young babies when they turn six months, but they are becoming more and more of a thing for young kids and adults too, especially for a summer baby or winter birthday when friends might be traveling and parties can be a challenge.

My youngest kids (the twins) birthday is a few days away from Christmas. This is always a rough time to celebrate. People who have birthdays close to major holidays often speak of feeling a little “cheated” out of gifts.  Having a small June celebration, even if only a small gift, special dinner, and a half birthday cake, would be a fun way to celebrate them when the busy season doesn’t over shadow their birthday. Contrary, if your child has a summer birthday, a half birthday is a way to recognize it when friends are not traveling or perhaps in the classroom.

Half Birthday Ideas

Not that we have established what is a half birthday and reasons to have a half birthday, let’s take a look at these Half Birthday Celebration ideas. Just like a regular  birthday, this new party trend is fun.  Why not celebrate the unbirthday aka the half birthday party them!?

Shower them with cake. It’s important to have some half birthday cake ideas in your back pocket. We love this half cake idea from Beki Cooks Cake Blog. How cute is the back side?

Easy Half Party Decorations could be simple like a banner and streamers. Grab this Half Birthday Banner and buy it for every birthday in your home!

Have a special breakfast (the hostess aka you) gets to drink/eat the other half! Idea on a Mother’s Niche.

Make it a surprise party. People might expect a birthday around their birthday, but no one expects a surprise party on their half birthday! Love this party favor from Our Hobby House – Thanks for HALFing a good time! Consider putting in half a candy bar.

Now that we have infiltrated your head with ides for a half birthday, let’s find yours so you can celebrate!

What’s My Half Birthday?

It’s very easy to calculate your half birthday. First, identify your birth date. Take your birthday month and count six months later. Keeping the same numeric date, that is your half birthday. You have only switched the month.

For example, my birthday July 15th. I calculate six months from July. It’s January. So my half birthday is January 15th.

Enjoy and half fun looking for something to celebrate YOU and your family and friends more than once a year!
