Newborn Hacks, Tips and Tricks

Wondering where to keep baby medicine? Have a safe place to keep all your medical supplies and needs? What is it that babies need anyways? Take a look at this DIY Baby Medicine Cabinet from The Gifty Girl. The only thing in this list I would add is the Baby Nasal Aspirator from NoseFrida (Don’t knock it! I learned about this with baby #3, #4, and #5!)

Quickly change crib sheets in the middle of the night with this hack. Layer crib bedding with a mattress protector, crib sheet, mattress protector, and crib sheet. This will help with diaper blow outs or middle of the night sickness. we have tried this and it worked great! These are mattress protector musts, also great for changing tables! More baby ideas from Two Twenty One.

Pumping? Make your own DIY Breast Pump Bra with this idea from Lil Miss. It still provides some modesty! This could save you about $30 (the price of a pumping bra, especially if you can find a cheaper sports bra.) One way to keep your nipples covered, is to put on these LilyPadz (I use these under my swimsuits even when I am not nursing or pregnant!)  This would allow you to keep the bra on all day. If you are someone that wants to use pumpkin bra you wear only when nursing, of all five of my kids – this was my favorite pumping bra!

Listen – repeat and remember this… command hooks are your best friend! Organize baby bibs, put a command hook on the back of your baby’s high chair to say organized. I have yet to try this but it is on my list of things to do! Other things I organize with command hooks are hats, belts, scarfs, headbands, towels, etc. | Source.

If you need to store breast milk in the fridge, follow this breast milk store hack.  Grab TWO Dr. Brown’s formula mixing pitcher (not to make formula). Instead pour your breast milk in one container. You will pour from the container to your bottles. I kept a row of bottles to have for the day and excess went in the pitcher to make for the next day. The second pitch is for washing or for “newer” breast milk. I used the excess breast milk and frozen it (see tip below) in these storage milk bags. The handle on the pitcher is great for mixing fatty milk and watery milk making each bottle a good mix of your different types (hindmilk and foremilk) of breast milk.

Does your newborn baby have gas? Relieve newborn gas in the stomach with this method. It worked for my little kids! Video of how to relieve baby gas Source.

Keep a door silent when you sneak out of the room with this no-sew door latch cover. You will love this, it keeps baby from crying when they hear the door shut! Has anyone tried this? Idea from Project Nursery. Prefer to buy, this affordable door latch cover is what we have it is works perfectly! My youngest kids are 3 and 4 and I still use it!

Have a lot of baby food pouches that are hard to store? Try this hack – Baby Food Pouch Slider! It is the perfect way to organize baby food. (Also seen in our Life Hacks)

Organize diapers in a pretty way. Having had a baby, this cart is genius and I love the idea. I feel like I have 1000 places for changing diapers in the home, so this keeps everything together and let’s you roll it along.  You can get many different colors here. Idea on Love Laugh Mirch

Keep track of your baby’s medicine calendar with this Sharpie idea from Lovezilla. This I have to give a try – genius!

Follow this newborn hack for how to give a newborn medicine. Additionally, if you need to give medicine, do it with a pacifier that has a hole cut in the tip!  As an added tip, no baby enjoys taking medicine. I gradually insert medicine into their mouth. As they take some, I rub their neck (Adam’s apple area) to get them to swallow. | Source.

EVERY. CHILD. HAS. CHEWED. OUR. CRIB. Make your own no-sew teething guard for baby’s crib. You had me at no-sew! I cannot begin to tell you how much this idea would have saved me in repainting the crib with my middle child. You will need some flannel for this project, make sure it match your crib or grab a coordinating nursery color! Idea from Jane Marie Mom Blog.

Teething or need some extra soothing? Make mother’s milk breast milk popsicles and pacifier bites with this tutorial. I have tried this with water and it worked great! A frozen wash cloth (keep stored in a Ziploc bag when freezing) is also an amazing tip! Source.

Need to store breast milk? Organize your frozen milk in an old soda box. I did this with my third and it was such a perfect idea! Notice how the layer below the soda boxes is laying flat. Using cooking sheets, first lay your milk flat and freeze. Then move the frozen milk up to the soda can boxes to store!  These were my favorite storage milk bags, even though it was not the brand of pump I was using. They stood up, allowing me to pour milk. Another tip, when you thaw the milk, consider thawing it in another bag – for example, put the frozen milk in an empty milk bag. This is in case the frozen bag acquired a hole. It will prevent loss of frozen breast milk as it thaws (You can cry over lost milk!) Idea from Fit Mommy Diaries.

DIY bottle holder. Aid a bottle feeding with a Rhino Toys Oball Baby Bottle Cage – cut a larger hole in the top and snuggly insert the bottle. It’s easier for the baby to grip the ball than the bottle. My twin mom groups have SWORE by this baby bottle holder. Always be present when the baby is taking milk. Source.

Note: Babies have died being unattended while being bottle fed. Always monitor your babies when they get a bottle. Do not leave them alone.

Don’t let baby gates mess up your stair rails or walls with this method. If you want to know our favorite baby gate (we have five different ones in the house) it is this easy close, easy open baby gate! Source.

As baby gets older, follow the steps of this Baby Proofing Checklist. Off our outlet covers, these are my favorite. These have been great for our kitchen cabinets. They are not the prettiest, but they do the job. I leave my Tupperware cabinet not locked. There are no sharp objects in there and it is fun for the kids to play in! When a lot of kids are in the tub, you will want a bath spout cover. I have bought so many that did not fit. This was was pretty flexible to fit any spout.  List from Hello Bee.

Go shoe shopping without the kids. Trace their feet for measurements before you go! This is the perfect shoe hack for kids. Idea from A Beautiful Ruckus.

How to protect bath toys from mold. If you do not own one, go ahead and buy a hot glue gun. You will be using it for the next 18 years! Keep bath toys clean by covering the hole with hot glue. This keeps out mold and other bacteria spots. Idea from We Love Being Moms.

Yes, Yes, Yes to this baby sleep chart. It is right on. How much does baby sleep? Take a look at this chart to get a general idea for ages and stages and lengths of sleep. Print this out, put it on your refrigerator. Most moms are shocked how much a newborn sleeps (in the day!)  Chart from She Knows.

Bed rail pool noodle hack. Transitioning to a toddler bed, keep the kids from falling out with this trick – a fitted sheet and pool noddle, who knew?! It’s a lot cheaper than this bed guard rail we bought (though it worked great!) Source.

Fresh air can be everything to a fussy baby! Cover your baby with a fitted crib sheet over a Pack ‘n Play to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away. Source.

Teaching a toddler to put on shoes? Easily identify left and right shoes. Put a sticker that is cut in half in your toddler’s shoes. You can also buy toddler shoe stickers! Idea from One Creative Housewife.

white-onesie-hack

Onesie Hack for Diaper Explosions. Did you realize why onesies have envelope folds in the shoulders, this trick works wonders for an explosive diaper! Speaking of onesies, grab a bunch of white onesies. Baby looks adorably cute in them and they can be bleached – you will learn why bleach is your best friend (especially if baby doesn’t have sensitive skin!)  Watch the Video.

Today Only: Mama Bear Diapers on Sale

December 27, 2018 by FCL Filed Under: Amazon, Baby, Online Shopping Leave a Comment

Have a little one in diapers or looking for a great baby shower gift? Discounts on diapers are always a good thing, and today only, you can get Mama Bear diapers on sale.

Size 1 diapers are great to stock up on and give as gifts rather than newborn diapers for new babies because they start at 8 pounds, which is a good guess for what size a newborn will need.

If your baby is in size 3 diapers, the Mama Bear size 3 diapers have a snug and secure fit for up to 12 hours of leakage protection – just as all Mama Bear diapers do. These are highly rated and supposed to be gentle on the skin – a big plus for me.

Other brands of diapers stop using their wetness indicators fairly early, but Mama Bear size 5 diapers have that feature, which I love. It makes it super easy to know when your baby needs to be changed. These diapers also have a fun bear print.

For a limited time, Amazon is offering Free Shipping on ALL orders for everyone, not just Prime members! This offer applies to items sold by Amazon only and does not apply to add-on items.

Nanny Appreciation Week and Babysitter Gift Ideas

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

October 5, 2018 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Baby, Facebook, Frugal Living, Instagram, Kids, Pinterest, Social Media 3 Comments

Nanny appreciation week is the last week of September. Take a look at these creative ways to recognize your nannie as well as babysitter gift ideas to make your caregiver feel loved!

Nanny Appreciation Week

So I am new to the nanny circuit. When we had Elijah, our third, in 2016, I was able to juggle him and work from home. Work often was based on his nap schedule and because he was such a good baby, he would play while I quickly got up a post, worked on social media content, or managed the day to day tasks of owning a small business. When Eli was around 7 months old, we learned we were pregnant. At our 9 week check-up, we learned it was twins. Initially, considering a nanny wasn’t even on our radar. Our income came in and quickly went out to a list of designated spots – mortgage, groceries, retirement, activities, etc. You name it! I understood living paycheck to paycheck, I still do. After accepting the fact, twins were on the way and we would have 3 children under 14 months of age, I was either going to quit the blog, or we were going to have to shift some financial matters… we chose the later.

How to Find a Nanny

My husband I researched the benefit of preschools and nannies. The benefits of having a nanny far outweighed sending the kids to preschool, especially at such young ages. This kept the kids in a familiar environment, allowed me to still work flexibly (and help), and also gave us help with the day to day happenings in the home. The twins were born premature and weighted only four and a half pounds. I knew they would need me their first few months and being able to work and having them in the next room was so important to me.  We found our nanny on Care.com. Care did background checks for us and allowed us to interview and learn about a number of nannies. I can’t tell you how many commercials I saw over the years and thought “I would never hire a care taker on that site” …God laughs! We are so blessed to have picked the nanny direction and I swear God placed the right nanny in our life! She is fun, she is engaging, she sticks to the schedule I proved her (I am a Babywise mama!), and most importantly, she loves on our kids (and visa versa)!

National Nanny Recognition Week

Since 1998, Nanny Appreciation Week aka National Nanny Recognition Week has been observed the last week of September to recognize and celebrate nannies. I had no idea about this before our current nanny, but as a “Pinterest Mom” I was sure going to rock it! The pressure was on!

Nanny or Baby Sitter Candy Bar Letter

The first thing we did was a Candy Bar Letter. I have seen many candy bar letters in my lifetime (Father’s Day, coaches, teachers, etc) but I have never done one for a caregiver. Making the adjustment wasn’t too hard, our letter read…

To Our Hot Tamale aka Super Nanny, You are Mounds of fun, bring us many Snickers and Joy (add Almond Joy and cross off the almond, we forgot it), and you rarely Take 5 for yourself.  We were going to give you a million bucks on Payday, but the money slipped through our Butterfinger (add a s).  After paying a sad Symphony, we decide to Orbit the Milky Way to tell you that we love you to Pieces. We are Extra lucky as you were Ment (take off os) for us. Love, your little Peeps.

Since Nanny Appreciation is a week long, we did something fun and surprising for each day – sorta like a treasure hunt for our nanny. The first thing we acknowledge was all the “crap” she took – after all, she is changing diapers for three boys daily which easily equates to over a dozen diapers a day, many filled with… crap.

Gift Ideas for Babysitter or Nanny

Day 1 – Starbucks Gift Card

The first place we hid our treasure hunt was in the diaper changing station, in the diapers. I purchased a Starbucks Gift Card and I tucked one in the first diaper she would grab.

The note read…

You take a lot of crap, have a drink on us!

Day 2 – Grocery Gift Card

Some of the benefits of having our nanny is she keeps us fed. I am in hideout mode in my room getting work done and can’t get dinner prepped without the kids immediately needing me. She is such a  wonderful cook and does our grocery shopping and preps our dinners. This has been one of the biggest blessings by far. Our second hidden gift card was for our grocery store and was was hidden in the refrigerator.

The note read…

Thanks for keeping us well fed! Here are some groceries for you too. Nom Nom.

Day 3 – Dunkin’ Gift Card

Another benefit of a nanny is bathing. This is something a caregiver could not do in a day care. Our nanny bathes the boys before naps. Not only does this give them a good afternoon rest, it also allows us to enjoy the evenings with the boys without trying to accomplish the checklist of baths! In the bath tub, we hid a Dunkin’ Gift Card.

The note read…

We knew we would find you here. Thanks for keeping us clean. Donut you know we would stink without you? (Also consider, donut know what we would do without you!)

Day 4 – Shell Gas Gift Card

Another benefit of a nanny is driving the kids two and from school and filling up the gas tank. Not only does she fill up our tank with gas, she fills up our tank in general (pun intended!) There was a lot of pun in this Shell Gas Gift Card.

The note read…

We are surprised to find you here. What a relief. Thanks for the gas you put in our tank.

Day 5 – Amazon Gift Card

Being a nanny is exhausting… I know, I am a mom! Our little crew take 5 naps a day. That means she is putting in a crib or taking them, ten times a day, I am sure there are times she wishes that she could jump in there too! For this, we got her an Amazon Gift Card so she could shop in her PJs in her own bed!

The note read…

Hey, Super Nanny, Don’t you wish you could give in that bed too? Here’s to only shopping in your PJs. Night, Night.

Babysitter Gift Ideas

We have also written our Nanny the Tale of a Super Nanny and her five cubs. For this Nanny Appreciation week idea, we hung gift cards in the kitchen with a sweet little story written by the kids.

Of course, most of these ideas – who are we kidding – all of these ideas included gift cards. While some say gift cards are not personalized, I find them personalized because I listen to the person. Babysitter gift ideas can be personal even when they are gift cards. When our babysitter was headed on a tropical vacation, I bought her a gift card to a swimsuit store. When our sitter began a new gym, I bought her a gift card to a trendy workout clothing store. I find with these cards, she is able to get what she wants and/or needs.

It’s important to recognize your nanny beyond Nanny Appreciation Week. If a week is to much for you, consider doing some of these things through out the year to tell you babysitter, nanny, or caregiver you appreciate them!

Calling all parents of babies or those expecting a little one – there are some amazing baby items on sale for Prime Day ranging from car seats, strollers and other equipment to book deals and deal on diapers! You’ll want to grab everything you need for your baby while they’re on sale!

If you need a booster seat for your little one to use at the table for meal times, we have a discount on today for Prime Day. You can get this Ingenuity Smartclean Toddler Booster for just $25.49!

This booster has a foam insert for added comfort and can be used with any adult chair. It’s also easy to clean, which is always a plus for all of us busy moms! And, of course, you can easily take it with you to visit grandparents or on road trips.

Details:

The SmartClean Toddler Booster from Ingenuity isn’t just easy to clean, it’s designed specifically for toddlers. The roomy, soft foam insert adds comfort and the booster adds the right height to any dining chair. Straps secure the booster to an adult chair, so it works at almost any table and is even great for on-the-go. The foam seat pad is extra easy to clean, as it can be wiped clean or put in the dishwasher for bigger messes. The 3-point harness keeps your child secure and after age 3 can be removed for more independent toddlers. It’s easy to clean, easy to use, and easy to take on the go. Designed with parenthood in mind.

Need an umbrella stroller for your little one? This highly-rated Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller is on sale for $63.90 with an additional 20% discount that will be taken off at checkout.

I love that this stroller has a removable canopy with rear flip out sun visor. And, the storage basket is SO handy. I got so much use out of the basket on the umbrella stroller we used. I totally miss it when we’re out and about!

Details:

  • Durable, stylish aluminum frame (13 pounds) with large seat area
  • 4 position recline with 5 point safety harness. Maximum weight and height of child: 50 pounds and 43 inches

  • Adjustable and removable canopy with flip out sun visor. New and improved easy compact fold with carry strap and auto lock
  • Extra-large storage basket and rear storage pocket. Don’t overload storage basket: Maximum 10 pounds

And, if you’re looking for a car seat that will grow with your child, you need the Graco Milestone All-in-1 Convertible Car Seat in your life. This car seat is on sale for $114.56 (reg. $230).

This seat transitions from a rear-facing infant seat to a forward-facing car seat and belt-positioning booster. I wish we had gotten one of these because it would have saved us a lot of money spent on buying new car seats when our daughter outgrew hers.
