What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Halloween Safety Tips on Frugal Coupon Living

14 Important Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween season is upon us and most of us get pretty excited. From taking our kids to haunted houses and trick or treating, to decorating our own yards and porches with the latest ghouls and ghosts, Halloween can be dangerous! If we don’t take special precautions and pay close attention, Halloween can go from being a ton of fun to being a real life nightmare.

Never fear, however. We have all the tips you need to make sure your Halloween is perfectly safe. Here are 14 extremely important Halloween safety tips to follow this coming spooky season:

Make sure costumes are not flammable and fit – Costumes that are flammable are among the most dangerous on the market. While most commercial costumes are now flame retardant (make sure you check anyway), homemade costumes are not. Be super careful about what materials you use and that the costume fits snugly and comfortably. A loose or ill fitting costume can make your kids trip, fall and hurt themselves.

Travel in groups – Never be alone on Halloween if you are leaving the house. That goes for kids and adults. There is no good reason to be outside on Halloween alone.

Coach your kids to politely decline an invitation to come indoors – Even if it is cold outside, you should always coach your little ones to stand on the porch and not go inside unless they know them.

Make sure walkways are well lit – When you go to put your decorations together, make sure you light up the walking areas and any part of the trick or treat zone. Kids will otherwise trip, fall and hurt themselves on your property. That is not good for anyone. We suggest carrying a flashlight.

Avoid decorations that could be dangerous – Decorations that can be dangerous might be spikes, sharp points of any kind, open flames and even smoke such as what comes out of a machine. These things can be really cool looking and scary, but they can cause far more problems than they are worth. Use the fake stuff instead that is soft and harmless.

Inspect all candy – Homemade candy is great and all but it should not be eaten from strangers. Be sure your kids know to hold off on eating candy until you get a good look at it. Look for signs of tampering and damage.

Wear reflective clothing strips – These are now sold all over the place and you can literally make any costume glow in the dark. Take these strips and paste them on their bags of candy, backsides and front. The strips are not going to mess up the costume and will light your little one up and make them easily seen.

Carry a light – It helps for them to see where they are going and it also helps to let them be seen. These lights could be incorporated into the costume. If you are a Star Wars character, your light could be a light saber. If you are a pirate, why not carry a lantern?

Use crosswalks whenever possible – Crosswalks are not foolproof by any means but your odds of safely crossing goes up when you use them. Corners are the best options even if there are no crosswalks simply because cars tend to naturally slow down in those areas.

Leave the electronics at home – Why bring the tablets, computers and video games? A cell phone tucked away in case of emergency is okay, but a distracted kid on Halloween night is a dangerous proposition.

Use the sidewalk – The sidewalk is the safest place for you and your trick or treaters so spend some time making sure they stay there. Coaching your kids before they go out really does make a difference.

Always supervise younger kids – The younger set should always be followed closely by a parent or guardian. There are too many dangers to trust a teenager or other child to do it.

Avoid masks when possible – Masks are great from Halloween parties and haunted houses, but not for trick or treating. They make your child even more clumsy than they are without one. Why not paint the face they want instead and allow them to see where they are going?

Slow down – The number one safety rule on Halloween night is to slow down. That goes for drivers, children and parents. We all need to take it easy, enjoy the night and get home safely. Slowing down will help us all to do that.

Halloween OREO Bat Truffles

How fun are these OREO Bat Truffles? I can’t wait to have a tray full of these bats, ready to take flight into the kiddos Trick-or-Treat bags. Why not wrap them up in a cellophane bag to take to the classroom party. What a fun treat! They are much easier than you think as they come with a FREE Bat Wing Stencil to outline your bat wings just right! Do you have crafty kids? They would go batty to help you make these and get into the spooky spirit!

Ingredients:

  • 1 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 package of OREOs
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • 12 oz. Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Edible eyes

Additional materials: Parchment paper, Ziploc bags, Tape, Scissors and FREE Bat Wing Stencil.

Directions:

  1. Process the OREOs (entire cookie including filling) in a food processor or blender. Pulse until crumbs are formed.
  2. Using a hand-held or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the Oreo crumbs with cream cheese until combined. The mixture will be thick and sticky.
  3. Using your hands, roll into 20-25 balls. Place balls on a parchment paper lined backing sheet or a silicone mat-lined baking sheet. Freeze the truffles for at least 30 minutes. If they are not cold and solid, the melted chocolate will not coat the balls properly.
  4. While the truffles are freezing, place the Bat Wing Stencil under a piece of parchment paper on a solid surface–taping it down to keep it in place.
  5. Melt ½ cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips as directed on packaging.
  6. Place melted chocolate into a Ziploc bag and use scissors to snip off one corner. Pipe the melted chocolate along the outside of each bat wing outline and completely fill in with chocolate. Place chocolate wings in freezer for 10 minutes to harden.
  7. Once the bat wings have hardened – place edible eyes, mini chocolate chips, frozen Oreo truffles and bat wings in one location, so they are quickly available for the next step.
  8. Melt remaining semi-sweet chocolate chips as directed on packaging.
  9. Working with one truffle at a time, completely coat the outside of each ball. To do this, simply drop each truffle into the chocolate, swirl it around with a fork and then pick it up using the fork’s prongs. Tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to allow the excess coating to drip off, and place on lined baking sheet. Working quickly while the coating is still wet, dip a bat wing interior edge into chocolate and press gently into the side of the truffle until it is secure. Do the same with the second bat wing. Press two eyes into the front of the truffle and two mini chocolate chips onto the top. Repeat this process until all truffles are used.
  10. Refrigerate the truffles for at least 10 minutes so the chocolate sets. Truffles must always be chilled and will stay fresh for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

Turkey Sugar Cookies (Pin it to Pinterest)

This recipe is the most simplistic. Make the attached sugar cookie recipe or grab a pre-made store brand. Use icing as glue and create decadent feathers with candy corn.

Turkey Nutter Butter Cookies (Pin it to Pinterest)

The most popular Thanksgiving Food Craft, the flexibility of this food craft is nice. How much you want to go with this cookie is up to you. You can have a stand up turkey or a lay down turkey instead.  Add left over Halloween candy to spruce up the design or keep it simplistic with icing and candy corn.

Rolo Pilgram Hats (Pin it to Pinterest)

On the show we made these with chocolate peanut butter cups but you can also do with caramel cups. Pick up store bought frosted fudge cookies and glue on the top of the hat to make the perfect little snack for your little Pilgrim.

Chocolate Covered Oreo Turkeys (Pin it to Pinterest)

This turkey craft is likely for experienced and steady of hands baker. Mix colors and create bright feathers on your Oreo Turkey using a pretzel as a template. Again, how little or how much of the activity and design you want to do is up to you.
