How can I make my newborn stage easier?

Learning a new baby can be difficult. It doesn’t matter if you are experienced or a first time mom. These baby-care hacks for moms are perfect for getting through the first year of life. From creative mom hack of ways to store formula to newborn bedding ideas for middle of the night accidents, we have you covered.

and more!

Newborn Hacks, Tips and Tricks

Wondering where to keep baby medicine? Have a safe place to keep all your medical supplies and needs? What is it that babies need anyways? Take a look at this DIY Baby Medicine Cabinet from The Gifty Girl. The only thing in this list I would add is the Baby Nasal Aspirator from NoseFrida (Don’t knock it! I learned about this with baby #3, #4, and #5!)

Quickly change crib sheets in the middle of the night with this hack. Layer crib bedding with a mattress protector, crib sheet, mattress protector, and crib sheet. This will help with diaper blow outs or middle of the night sickness. we have tried this and it worked great! These are mattress protector musts, also great for changing tables! More baby ideas from Two Twenty One.

Pumping? Make your own DIY Breast Pump Bra with this idea from Lil Miss. It still provides some modesty! This could save you about $30 (the price of a pumping bra, especially if you can find a cheaper sports bra.) One way to keep your nipples covered, is to put on these LilyPadz (I use these under my swimsuits even when I am not nursing or pregnant!)  This would allow you to keep the bra on all day. If you are someone that wants to use pumpkin bra you wear only when nursing, of all five of my kids – this was my favorite pumping bra!

Listen – repeat and remember this… command hooks are your best friend! Organize baby bibs, put a command hook on the back of your baby’s high chair to say organized. I have yet to try this but it is on my list of things to do! Other things I organize with command hooks are hats, belts, scarfs, headbands, towels, etc. | Source.

If you need to store breast milk in the fridge, follow this breast milk store hack.  Grab TWO Dr. Brown’s formula mixing pitcher (not to make formula). Instead pour your breast milk in one container. You will pour from the container to your bottles. I kept a row of bottles to have for the day and excess went in the pitcher to make for the next day. The second pitch is for washing or for “newer” breast milk. I used the excess breast milk and frozen it (see tip below) in these storage milk bags. The handle on the pitcher is great for mixing fatty milk and watery milk making each bottle a good mix of your different types (hindmilk and foremilk) of breast milk.

Does your newborn baby have gas? Relieve newborn gas in the stomach with this method. It worked for my little kids! Video of how to relieve baby gas Source.

Keep a door silent when you sneak out of the room with this no-sew door latch cover. You will love this, it keeps baby from crying when they hear the door shut! Has anyone tried this? Idea from Project Nursery. Prefer to buy, this affordable door latch cover is what we have it is works perfectly! My youngest kids are 3 and 4 and I still use it!

Have a lot of baby food pouches that are hard to store? Try this hack – Baby Food Pouch Slider! It is the perfect way to organize baby food. (Also seen in our Life Hacks)

Organize diapers in a pretty way. Having had a baby, this cart is genius and I love the idea. I feel like I have 1000 places for changing diapers in the home, so this keeps everything together and let’s you roll it along.  You can get many different colors here. Idea on Love Laugh Mirch

Keep track of your baby’s medicine calendar with this Sharpie idea from Lovezilla. This I have to give a try – genius!

Follow this newborn hack for how to give a newborn medicine. Additionally, if you need to give medicine, do it with a pacifier that has a hole cut in the tip!  As an added tip, no baby enjoys taking medicine. I gradually insert medicine into their mouth. As they take some, I rub their neck (Adam’s apple area) to get them to swallow. | Source.

EVERY. CHILD. HAS. CHEWED. OUR. CRIB. Make your own no-sew teething guard for baby’s crib. You had me at no-sew! I cannot begin to tell you how much this idea would have saved me in repainting the crib with my middle child. You will need some flannel for this project, make sure it match your crib or grab a coordinating nursery color! Idea from Jane Marie Mom Blog.

Teething or need some extra soothing? Make mother’s milk breast milk popsicles and pacifier bites with this tutorial. I have tried this with water and it worked great! A frozen wash cloth (keep stored in a Ziploc bag when freezing) is also an amazing tip! Source.

Need to store breast milk? Organize your frozen milk in an old soda box. I did this with my third and it was such a perfect idea! Notice how the layer below the soda boxes is laying flat. Using cooking sheets, first lay your milk flat and freeze. Then move the frozen milk up to the soda can boxes to store!  These were my favorite storage milk bags, even though it was not the brand of pump I was using. They stood up, allowing me to pour milk. Another tip, when you thaw the milk, consider thawing it in another bag – for example, put the frozen milk in an empty milk bag. This is in case the frozen bag acquired a hole. It will prevent loss of frozen breast milk as it thaws (You can cry over lost milk!) Idea from Fit Mommy Diaries.

DIY bottle holder. Aid a bottle feeding with a Rhino Toys Oball Baby Bottle Cage – cut a larger hole in the top and snuggly insert the bottle. It’s easier for the baby to grip the ball than the bottle. My twin mom groups have SWORE by this baby bottle holder. Always be present when the baby is taking milk. Source.

Note: Babies have died being unattended while being bottle fed. Always monitor your babies when they get a bottle. Do not leave them alone.

Don’t let baby gates mess up your stair rails or walls with this method. If you want to know our favorite baby gate (we have five different ones in the house) it is this easy close, easy open baby gate! Source.

As baby gets older, follow the steps of this Baby Proofing Checklist. Off our outlet covers, these are my favorite. These have been great for our kitchen cabinets. They are not the prettiest, but they do the job. I leave my Tupperware cabinet not locked. There are no sharp objects in there and it is fun for the kids to play in! When a lot of kids are in the tub, you will want a bath spout cover. I have bought so many that did not fit. This was was pretty flexible to fit any spout.  List from Hello Bee.

Go shoe shopping without the kids. Trace their feet for measurements before you go! This is the perfect shoe hack for kids. Idea from A Beautiful Ruckus.

How to protect bath toys from mold. If you do not own one, go ahead and buy a hot glue gun. You will be using it for the next 18 years! Keep bath toys clean by covering the hole with hot glue. This keeps out mold and other bacteria spots. Idea from We Love Being Moms.

Yes, Yes, Yes to this baby sleep chart. It is right on. How much does baby sleep? Take a look at this chart to get a general idea for ages and stages and lengths of sleep. Print this out, put it on your refrigerator. Most moms are shocked how much a newborn sleeps (in the day!)  Chart from She Knows.

Bed rail pool noodle hack. Transitioning to a toddler bed, keep the kids from falling out with this trick – a fitted sheet and pool noddle, who knew?! It’s a lot cheaper than this bed guard rail we bought (though it worked great!) Source.

Fresh air can be everything to a fussy baby! Cover your baby with a fitted crib sheet over a Pack ‘n Play to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away. Source.

Teaching a toddler to put on shoes? Easily identify left and right shoes. Put a sticker that is cut in half in your toddler’s shoes. You can also buy toddler shoe stickers! Idea from One Creative Housewife.

white-onesie-hack

Onesie Hack for Diaper Explosions. Did you realize why onesies have envelope folds in the shoulders, this trick works wonders for an explosive diaper! Speaking of onesies, grab a bunch of white onesies. Baby looks adorably cute in them and they can be bleached – you will learn why bleach is your best friend (especially if baby doesn’t have sensitive skin!)  Watch the Video.

Toddler Tips and Tricks – Hacks for New and Old Moms

I don’t know what’s more challenging. The day you bring your child home from the hospital, the terrible twos or the terror-acious threes! If I had to choose, I would say get all the advice and tips you can before hitting the toddler years. Getting those those days of independence.

Parenting Tips for Toddlers

Where do you begin? Parenting toddlers should come with a manual (and nanny.) Toddler behavior can be difficult. Kids 2 to 5 are beginning to exert independence and want to do everything themselves. They especially hate being given direction. While there is no magic want for discipling toddlers, there is one helpful peace of advice – give your child options.

Examples of giving toddlers choices are taking a bath. The end result, no matter what, is your child will get in that bath tub. Ask your son/daughter do you want to skip to the bath tub or walk backwards. You have given you child 1.) a boring activity but turned it into controlled play 2.) you have the same result, the child is going to the bathroom but you are supplying the toddler with options.

Potty training can be tricky. From accidents to night-wets to consistency to motivation, we have some of the best Potty Training Tips and Tricks. Hacks to help you and your toddler succeed.

Potty Training Tips for Toddlers

Who dreads potty training? Mothers who have been there before, definitely don’t look back on this period of time with glee. I remember with my first I was in a rush to get her out of diapers and potty trained. With my second, I probably delayed longer than she needed to go but it was much easier training.

What is the best age to start potty training?

My best advice, coming from a mother who has trained five kids, is don’t rush it. I definitely had a better experience with my second having taken my time and discussed it months before actually jumping in. She also was able to see her older sibling use the potty and wanted to do the same.

What’s the best way to potty train a toddler?

When you begin training a toddler to use the restroom, plan to stay home for 3 days to a week. Tis is why summer break, spring break or Christmas break are great ideas. Give your child lots of liquids. Buy a drinking they love like apple juice for that week . I found it best to go strait to panties/underwear and to stay home. A lot of movies and a lot of fun outdoors.

Initially set a timer. If you can put your child in front of the timer, it gives them control and they like that. Consider starting with 20 minute increments. Later you can move to as much as 90 minute increments.

When you place them on the toilet, give them a little activity like a book or play potty training games.

Potty Training Tips at Nighttime

Nighttime training for toddlers comes later in the potty training process. Once your child has had a few successful weeks of using the toilet during the day, begin potty training at night.

The best advice for getting through the night was waking your child. Well not technically waking.  I picked up my child out of bed. They pretty much remained asleep and sat them on the toilet. I did this right before I went to bed, around 10 PM each evening. I whispered in their ear, “go potty” and she easily went to the restroom. This saved us a lot from bed-wetting in the night.

In addition, make sure you cut off your child’s liquids an hour or two before bed. Give them a sip of water when brushing their teeth but not too much.

Note: night training might comes easier and earlier for girls. Some boys can take a little bit longer.

Potty Training Hacks

When potty training, bring a sense of humor and perhaps a drink at night (mama needs it!)

Enjoy these Potty Training Tips and Tricks and be sure to share with us any hacks or tricks you had when training your own child to use the bathroom.

Stickers are exciting, Here’s a fun Free Printable Potty Training Chart to help your little one stay motivated during the potty training journey. (Pick up star stickers HERE) | Alice and Lois

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Pan to stay home and drink lots of liquids. This will give you toddler plenty of opportunities for practice and success!

For convenience, when potty training store the potty seat on the wall near the toilet with a Command hook.

Pull-ups has an amazing resource. Get your child excited to start potty training by receiving a phone call from one of their favorite Disney characters. | Pull-Ups

We all know that a toddler wants to do their own thing! This potty watch has three different reminder times (30, 60 or 90 minutes) plus flashing lights and music gently remind your toddler when to go. Get it HERE.

This tip comes from me! Potty training in the night can be hard. Limit liquids 1 to 2 hours before bed. I would always pick up my sleeping toddler at 10 PM (around my bed time) and sit her on the toilet. I would whisper in her ear to “go pee pee on the potty.” This limited our nighttime accidents by A LOT – almost non existent. I did this for months to close to a year. A potty light would be great for those night time visits.

Who wants to clean the poo? Use coffee filters when your child has to poop. Obviously these don’t flush, so just toss in the diaper pail. I always used a plastic grocery bag. | Mama Frankenstein (no longer available)

When traveling, you can use a diaper. Keep a cheap potty chair in your car along with a few diapers. If your child needs to go to the bathroom, open a diaper and put in the bottom of the potty chair. When he is done, wrap up the diaper and done. No mess. | A Haven of Chaos

As a mom of 5, take it from me. The worse thing to clean during potty training is the car seat after an accident. Pick up a waterproof car seat pad (or Piddlepad). We also used changing pad pads or old burp cloths. | Etsy Store LaneyJDesigns (no longer availble)

Note: please go with the directions of your car seat. Some advise no loose fabric between the child and the car seat.

Create a fun potty treat jar. One M&M for sitting on the potty, two M&Ms for going pee-pee and three M&Ms for going poo-poo. | A Pumpkin and a Princess

Put your child backwards on the toilet and give them a dry erase marker. Let them color away. | Source Unknown

Update: I would not suggest letting your child color during the potty . I would suggest starting backwards especially for young boys.

This is one of those, why didn’t’ I think of that items. My child hated the automatic flushing toilet! Carry a pack of post-it notes in your purse. In public bathrooms, place a sticky-note over the sensor to relieve fears! | My Crazy Blessed Life

Tell those cute toddlers they get to pull the paper down to the paper – and when it gets there, they tear it off! (Honestly this would work for my older kids too – anyone else!?!) | Today’s the Best Day

Speaking of the potty, another genius idea – take a look at this potty training tip! Drop blue food coloring in the potty. Tell your child when they go, the water will magically turn green! | Source Unknown

Make your own training pants for potty training with this tutorial! | Life Sew Savory

Create a potty chart with milestones… like Candyland. Place a small sticker on each hallow square and a larger sticker on each solid square. Each solid square gets a reward. | Steps Naptime Notes

Create a potty zone with books, changing of underwear, bubbles, and or something to color. You can put a puppy pad below the toilet. | Source Unknown

Hit up the Dollar Store or Target’s dollar section before you begin training (remember you want to be home a few days). Have a reward potty treat bag for hitting milestones.  This worked very well for our family after we were toilet trained but needed work with #2 in the toilet.| Embellish Goods

5 Ways to Save at Chuck E. Cheese

It’s the place your kiddos ask about when they think about having a fun day! If you pass by it, it will most certainly get a ‘Can we go there?!’ Chuck E Cheese has long been one of the most entertaining places to take your children, but it can really rack up a huge bill. Although the experience tends to be worth the money, that doesn’t mean that we can’t take some steps to save a bit of cash. Every little bit helps, right? We’ve put together some great tips to check out before your next adventure to Chuck E. Cheese so it doesn’t just become a place to go only for a birthday party or a once in a blue moon visit.

Here are five awesome ways to save cash when you visit Chuck E Cheese:

Use Coupons

Coupons are readily available for Chuck E Cheese restaurants and you can really rack up the savings. The key is to look around for them in advance and find the ones that save you the most. (Generally you can’t stack them and use more than one at a time) The best places to find Chuck E Cheese coupons are newspapers, cereal boxes, kids stores, magazines and their website. You can visit there regularly to see what is available.

Buy Discounted Gift Cards

If you are willing to spend a bit of cash for a gift card, you can save a ton of cash through their discount program. Many people buy large dollar increments so that they get the maximum amounts and this works well if you visit often enough. This is especially well for a child’s birthday party. This bill could be in the 100s but the ability to save up to 20% off by buying a discounted gift card can take your money a lot futhur. One website I use to buy discounted gift cards is Raise.com.

Eat Before You Go

Although this might sound counterproductive, the truth is the food is optional at Chuck E Cheese. It is certainly not the most exciting part of the visit for the kids. Eat a little something before you come and you will save a ton of cash right off the bat.

Take Advantage of Free Refills and Share

If you are going to eat, while you certainly shouldn’t share drinks, it is perfectly fine to share food. One order is often enough for a few kids and you can buy each one a soda to get refills throughout the time they are there. There is certainly no need to buy large amounts of food when the kids are going to be focused on the games and so on anyway.

Visit the Website and Get on the Mailer List

As mentioned above, the website is a wonderful way to save cash. One of the best ways is to get on their mailing list. This way you will be getting notifications from them when they do something special. Chuck E Cheese always has something going on and this is a way to find out without having to think about visiting all the time.

Chuck E Cheese is a great place for kids to come and have a good time, but it can certainly be expensive if we don’t pay close attention. These steps should help you to stave off the costs and keep it affordable when you decide to visit.
