Family activities solidify healthy family relationships. As you begin to gather your fall family bucket list this season, be sure to add these Family Traditions for Fall.

While your kids are at home, it is important to create family traditions. This can be done with the change of seasons and the change of activities available in one’s area. Family traditions are a set of activities you repeat within a family. Traditions make each family unique as they are experiences that not every family will have. When you combine family traditions, you create your own unique family blueprint.

As the temperatures drop and the leaves begin to turn, try some of these fall family activities. They can be done alone, with your immediate family, or you can incorporate a few of these fall ideas with the company of others like at a Friendsgiving Gathering.

Family Traditions for Fall

Enjoy these family traditions, important for creating family memories. As you establish more family memories, the bond of relationships grows stronger. These fall family traditions are sure to be new “notches” in your kids’ memory bank.

Fall Family Bucket List

One way to look organized into a season is with Family Bucket Lists. Bucket lists allow kids to look forward to unique family activities and keep parents organized to fit in all the fall activities they can.

Fall Bucket List Ideas Printable PDF

Fall Bucket List Ideas:

  • Collect Leaves to Create Nature Art

  • Make a Fall Wreath

  • Rake & Jump in a Pile of Leaves

  • Make S’mores

  • Visit a Corn Maze

  • and more Fall Bucket List Ideas

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

For the kids that love to be hands-on, pumpkin patches are traditionally set up for guests to walk around and pick up their own pumpkins. They can be found in cities (perhaps in a church parking lot) or in the country, visit a pumpkin farm. If you are able to get a a “real” pumpkin patch, it create a learning environment for your kids to see pumpkins are not always found on the shelf but first begin from growing on a vine.

Go to a Fall Festival

Our favorite fall festival is found at local farms, year after year. Look for an event that has a corn maze, hayride, burlap slides, petting farms, and more. It might be a day trip away from the city, but doing something out of the norm creates the most vivid memories.

Go Apple Picking

One of our favorite things to do is to go apple picking.  In late August, September and early October, there’s no better way to take in the beautiful time of year than an afternoon spent in the apple orchard of a little farm, away from the hustle and bustle of the produce aisle in the supermarket. The fall adventure makes for some amazing photos!

Apple Baking Day

Apples certainly make for great healthy snacks all by themselves, however, fall is the time to begin baking. If you find yourself with a surplus of apples, bake as much as you can and consider gifting the extra baked goods to neighbors, teachers, friends and more.  Pair your apple recipes with this adorable Thankful for You Gift Tag for fall.

Carve a Pumpkin

Carving a pumpkin is the All-American fall traditions. It is best done at the end of October so the pumpkin does not rot before Halloween. Enjoy over 700+ Free Pumpkin Templates for carving and be sure to follow this Pumpkin Hack to keep your carved pumpkin from getting rotten. You can also go outside the traditional norm of carving and try these no-carve pumpkin ideas.

Play Fall Games

Host a game day. This can be a larger event where you invite friends and family or it can be a family game night where you create the most intimate memories among your immediate family. The best thing about fall game parties is you can keep the house clean and free of germs choosing to host outside.

Fall Games to Play

  • Outdoor Games
  • Indoor Games
  • Camping Games
  • Friendsgiving Thanksgiving Games
  • Adult Party Games

Boo Your Neighbors

Get your neighbors involved with a friendly game of boo-ing. Boo your neighbors by going to their front door. Dropping a treat or bag of candy and running just after ringing the doorbell. The goal is to continue to fall tradition until all of the neighborhood is booed. Download Free You’ve Been Booed Printables.

Thanksgiving Tree

One of the best things to do every fall is taking a gratitude challenge. This can be done through a nightly dinner conversation in a 30-Day Gratitude Challenge or you can create a Thanksgiving tree. Put a few dry branches in a vase and have everyone add hanging leaves (made from construction paper) with messages of thanks.

Cook with Pumpkin

When the first leaf falls, the flavors of pumpkin are everywhere . Teach your kids to enjoy the mixture of cinnamon and squash with pumpkin recipes. You can create your own pumpkin recipes from scratch or bake easy pumpkin recipes with these canned pumpkin recipes -pumpkin recipes from breakfast to dessert and everything in between

Volunteer

In a season of giving thanks, be sure to also give back. Paying it forward is as much a gift for someone else as it is for you. Find a service project you can commit to for the season such as creating fall turkey kits or homeless kits.  Volunteering provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Plus, intrinsically, it gives to you just as much as it gives back to someone else!

Decorate for Fall

Pull at your fall decorations or get to the Dollar Tree and buy some new ones. There are many low-cost Fall Décor Ideas for decorating the home. Don’t forget your child to decorate their little corner of the home, their bedroom.

Have a Bonfire Night

Gather some firewood and get ready to have a bonfire. A family bonfire can take place on an overnight camping trip or in your own backyard. Try different and unique S’mores recipes as well as these campfire cones – your kids will love them and their hands will be free of sticky marshmallows.

Fall Foliage Drive

As the leaves begin to turn, take a Scenic Drive. This can be a day trip or a weekend trip to the mountains. Our family has rented a cabin in a state park, visited caves, had picnics, and walked a few trails. Keep in mind the colors of the leaves in the mountains will change a lot faster than most cities. You can keep track of the Fall Foliage Report with Weather.gov.

Fun Camping Games printable with Instructions and Supply List

Face the Cookie

In this fun minute to win it game, each person is given a cookie with the goal of getting it from their forehead to their mouth without dropping it. This game is perfect for those that like time limits.

Spoons

This traditional game is all about speed. You need a deck of cards and a fun concoction.  Players quickly pick up and pass cards in an attempt to get 4 of a kind. When someone gets four of a kind, they grab a spoon. Everyone grabs a spoon leaving someone without, and earning them a letter. The last person to spell out SPOONS wins!

Fire Tender

Sitting in a circle, teams try to sneak a stick or other fire starting item from in front of the blindfolded “fire tender” without being caught. The team with the most sticks at the end of the game is the winner.

Pass the Water

This water minute to win it game is perfect for a hot day, the goal is to have the most water in your bucket before the game ends. But be careful, keeping the water in the cup (and staying dry) is not as easy as it sounds!

Scavenger Hunt

Nothing is more exciting than a scavenger hunt in the dark! Work together to collect everything on your list before the other teams using your flashlight.

You can also check out our Camping Treasure Hunt with Scavenger Hunt Riddles.

Sardines

You might remember this game from summer camp! Play this backwards version of hide-n-seek by looking for the person hiding. Last one to find the hidden “sardine” becomes the sardine. Just try not to laugh and give your hiding spot away!

Charades

Like the traditional game, teams will take turns acting out camping terms on the cards to earn a point and win. Bragging rights are on the line, so teammates but not be afraid to shout out your guesses.

Sleeping Bag Races

Ready for a relay race? Hop to the finish line the fastest, using your sleeping bag to win. You can also substitute trash bags if you’re worried about getting your bed dirty. First team to finish declares victory.

Flashlight Tag

Pick a person to be “it” and let the fun begin! Players will try to avoid being “tagged” with the beam of light from the flashlight or risk being out. Last one standing wins!

I’m Going on a Camping Trip

This throwback to the childhood “Going on a Bear Hunt” game is all about memory. the First play lists something they would take camping… even if it is silly like a pineapple. Each player names something that they will take on their camping trip. Then the person after them lists the items from before and adds their item to the list.

Pass the Banana

It’s time to get sneaky with this hilarious game. Sitting in a circle, players have to pass the fruit without the person in the middle of the circle seeing them.

The best thing about many of these new camping game ideas is that they can be played using common items found at a campsite like spoons, a tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, water, cookies and more. Very little items need to be back and the ones that you do need to purchase, are low-cost and can fit in a duffle bag! They will not take up room in your trunk to pack.

Teaching Kids Manners

Teaching kids manners? This list of list of manners and etiquette will raise a child with discipline and good character. Includes teaching manners activities, manners for kids games, how to write a thank you note, cell phone etiquette and more.

Teaching Kids Manners – Essential Etiquette and Practical Tips

Teaching kids manners is extremely important. When a child is well mannered, he or she knows how to behave and interact with others properly. They can make friends easier, be more successful in school and work, have better relationships with adults, and feel happier and more confident overall. It’s never too early (or too late) to start teaching your children good manners—be it on a playground during recess or sitting around the dinner table with the family.

Why is Teaching Kids Manners Important?

Teaching children good manners isn’t just about teaching a few phrases – it’s often about giving them tools for social intelligence so they’re able to communicate well throughout all aspects of their lives.

  • Teaching kids manners teaches them how to interact with the world around them.
  • Manners are about treating others well, and teaching children this will help reduce conflict with others because they’ll know how to get along better in social situations.
  • Manners are about having respect for others and teaching children manners can help them see the world as a place where they’re respected too.
  • It’s not just about showing up on time or using your words, it’s also making sure that you’re conscious of how people feel in the way you act toward them.

Essential Manners to Teach Your Kids

For a quick overview of teaching manners to kids, refer to this handy Guidelines for Good Manners chart from Thirty Handmade Days.

Learn the Magic Words

When you were a child, your parents and teachers probably taught you that some words were “magic words.” These were please, thank you, may I, and you’re welcome. These are still essential phrases every parent should teach young children today. They never go out of style!

To practice these skills for an upcoming holiday dinner or staying at a friend’s house, play this Yes Please, No Thank You Meal Manners Game from Happy Home Fairy.

Say please and thank you to service workers after receiving services or goods. This is especially important for kids to learn, because those who work with the public deal with a lot. Good manners go a long way toward making them feel appreciated.

Write Thank You Letters

No matter how old you are, writing thank-you letters is a way to show appreciation for gifts and gestures. It’s always good manners to take the time out of your day to write grateful messages back in return.

Nicole from Coffee and Carpool offers tips on writing meaningful and thoughtful thank you letters. She recommends that parents take note of gifts their children receive as well as who sent them; taking pictures of the child using the gift; writing the note on the back of the photo, and keeping the number of notes you write at once to five or fewer.

Another handy idea is using templates to help your child get their thoughts organized and on paper. Fantastic Fun and Learning offers three cute thank you note templates for Christmas gifts—one is blank, one is lined, and one has three boxes for drawing and writing.

The Suburban Mom offers a cute thank you template for teachers where young children can fill in the blanks and draw a picture of their teacher. It’s a great way for kids to show their appreciation at the end of the year.

Setting the Table

Setting the table is a skill that every kid should know how to do. It’s not difficult, and it teaches kids about organization and etiquette. The goal is to create an attractive place setting for your family mealtime.

These table setting placemats from Positively Splendid are an excellent place to start to teach kids who are just learning to set the table. Of course, tea parties, wedding receptions, and formal dinners are fancier affairs, so here’s a nifty diagram of informal and formal place settings from Simply Sprout to use for such occasions.

Be a Good Hostess – Practice with a Tea Party

Hosting a tea party is an elegant affair. You’ll have the perfect gathering with these Tea-rrific Tea Party Ideas! We’ve got ideas for everything you need to make your next garden party extra special—tea finger sandwiches, floral teacup centerpieces, and vintage books for display.

Hosting such events helps kids practice many different types of manners, including sending out personalized invitations, accepting RSVPs from guests, and mingling at gatherings. They’ll also practice proper etiquette when setting the table, eating with the correct utensils, and using good table manners.

Phone Etiquette

Kids love answering the phone, but they don’t always use their best manners when doing so. Teach your child the proper way to answer the phone from an early age. You may prefer your child give a simple “Hello” or “Good morning” or a more formal “Hello, this is Chloe. To whom am I speaking?” response. Also teach children to answer the phone promptly, preferably before the third ring.

When it comes to teens and their phones, there’s a lot more cell phone etiquette that needs to be covered. This cell phone contract from Thirty Handmade Days is an excellent place to start. Teens must agree to always answer their parents, to never bring the phone to the dinner table, to never call or text anyone after 9PM, and other manners and responsibilities. Have your tween or teen sign the contract upon getting their first phone!

Don’t Interrupt Others

Kids are full of energy and curiosity, which is why they want to chime in on conversations. However, some kids have a hard time with self-control when it comes to interrupting others. More importantly, being interrupted can be frustrating for the person who was speaking, kids and adults alike. If you find yourself getting frustrated with your child’s interruptions, here are a few tips that may help:

  • Teach your children polite phrases like “excuse me” and “may I please?” so that when they want people’s attention, they will politely say those phrases instead of just jumping in with an interruption.
  • Wait to respond to their questions. Many parents tell their children to stop interrupting, but in the next moment, they respond to the child’s interruption anyway. This just makes it more likely for your child to keep interrupting. Wait for an appropriate pause in the conversation before you turn to your child and ask what they need.
  • Teach “the squeeze.” Let your child know that when you are speaking to an adult, she can gently squeeze your hand to let you know she needs you. Gently squeeze her hand in acknowledgment to let her know that you’re aware she needs you, and respond to her as soon as possible.
  • Take turns talking. Practice this skill with your children or have them practice with each other. No one can say a word until the speaker is finished talking.

Cover Coughs, Sneezes, and Yawns

Do you find yourself really grossed out when someone coughs or sneezes into the air? You’re not alone! Kids need to learn to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or with their arm if a tissue is not available. This keeps saliva and germs off hands. Of course, this will take some practice. A simple way for children to remember is with this short rhyme: “Cough or sneeze—cover it please!” Don’t forget to encourage them to cover their yawns, too, as this is the polite thing to do in the company of others.

Clean Hands Often

Keeping your hands clean is as much about manners as it is good hygiene. Kids should also be encouraged to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly. This glitter germ activity from The Simple Parent provides kids with a good visual of how germs can cling to hands without thorough washing.

Manners may seem like a small thing, but they are key to making others feel comfortable and valued. With a little bit of guidance from parents or teachers, kids can learn the importance of good manners in everyday life.

After learning every thing about good manners, host a tea party! These Tea Party ideas are quite fun! Pin to Pinterest.

Well my husband spent almost a year living in India. Once, with Campus Crusade for Christ another time with work. The people became a part of his heart and before we got married, I promised him I would take a trip over there. Because of that love, a common Google search for our family (okay really me, because I am the cook) …
