Washington DC with the Kids

{10 Things to Do with the Kids in DC}

If you have kids and live in the DC area, it only makes sense to get out there and explore what this awesome city has to offer. Whether you’re new to this area or just want to get out and re-explore the nation’s capital with your kiddos, here are 10 things to do with kids in DC.

Hello Bei Bei! The Smithsonian Zoo debuted their newest 5 month old Panda bear today! #pandastory #beibei

A post shared by Ashley Recio Langston (@frugalcouponliving) on Jan 16, 2016 at 1:12pm PST

1.) The National Zoo – One of our favorite things to do in the DC area with our kids is the National Zoo. This 163-acre zoological park is in the heart of Washington, D.C. They are home to 2,000 individual animals. Open to the public 364 days a year, it is free to visit but does cost to park. Try public transportation as both the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park Metro stops are within walking distance of the Zoo.

2.) National Air and Space Museum – If your kids love to learn there are two National Air and Space Museums. There is one on the mall (the area of DC where most Smithsonian Museums are located) and one out near the Dulles airport (our favorite) in Virginia. The museums maintain the world’s largest and most significant collection of aviation and space artifacts. Take a look at Wright Flyer, Apollo 11, the Space Shuttle Discovery, and more! No matter which location you’re close to, you can check it out!

3.) National Museum of Natural History – We are huge history buffs around here, so going to the National Museum of Natural History is a no-brainer. If you’ve never been to this museum before, it’s focused on everything from bones to mammals to mummies to Human Origins. The African Elephant the exhibit most recognizable but also check out the live butterfly pavilion, Tarantula feedings, the biggest blue diamond in the world, and a Live Coral Reef.

4.) International Spy Museum – Feeling like James Bond? This is one of the most fun museums in the DC area and kids love it. There are tons of exhibitions, experiences, and educational programs to dive into. The mission of this museum is to explore the craft, practice, history, and contemporary role of espionage. It is really neat how each museum has special details for children to make the visit engaging and exciting.

5.) National Mall – Don’t be confused, this is not a place for shopping. The mall is a park in the art of the District where you can see dozens of museums, monuments, and the White House. Walk from the Capital, down the large row of  Smithsonian Museums, past the Washington Monument, glimpse the White House, pass the WWII Memorial, see the beautiful Reflecting Pool and finish at the LIncoln Memorial – a great spot to catch the sunset! Although it’s called a “mall”, your brain will be the only thing receiving new inventory as it is a rich place for exploring.

6.) A National’s Game – “Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd…” Whether you’re a fan of baseball or not, going to a National’s Game is a must for any bucket list. You might even feel like a local!

Finally braving the city after the large rush of inauguration visitors. Today’s trip is to the Natural History Museum to visit Q?rious Microscope Lab. You can view dinosaur bones, insects, minerals, animals and so much more…. any idea what that yellow eye staring back at us is? It’s the lesser bird-of-paradise.

A post shared by Ashley Recio Langston (@frugalcouponliving) on Jan 28, 2017 at 9:46am PST

7.) The Spark Lab located in the National Museum of American History – We visit the Spark Lab at least once a month if not more often. It is a great place for my girls, ages 6 and 7, to try hands on experiments with the knowledge and supervision of some pretty smart volunteers. It also brings a love and passion for science and technology, something I love having instilled at such young ages. While you are in the American History Museum, be sure to see the Flag that Inspired the Star-Spangled Banner. Also take a look at The Natural History Museum and go to their hidden gem, Q?rious Microsope Lab.

8.) U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing – This is such a cool place for kids to visit in the DC area. Of course it’s unique because it’s not every day kids can see where currency is made and engraved. Whether you’re visiting or live in the DC area, you have got to check out this place. I visited as a young kid and it is the place I remember most!

A lot of history is being uncovered by these two girls at the Newseum in DC…. did you use your Bank of America card for a FREE museum entrance today? @newseum #bankofamerica #museumsonus #newseum #dc

A post shared by Ashley Recio Langston (@frugalcouponliving) on Aug 2, 2015 at 11:50am PDT

9.) Newseum – This kid friendly DC attraction is best for older kids as it features dramatic pictures and stories that made the national news. Exhibits include 9/11, the Vietnam War, and a section of gripping Pulitzer Prize winning photos. Bank of America cardholders can get free admittance the first weekend of the month. You can also buy tickets online to save 15%.

10.) The National Harbor – This awesome place to visit is located in the District in Maryland. I suggest going toward the end of the day, it is a great place to watch the sun set and grab a bite. You can literally shop, dine, play, and stay at The National Harbor. We love the Gaylord National.  Seasonally, both ICE (winter) and movies and the park (summer) are great. Recently, they have added a casino, MGM National Harbor.  You do have to travel a little to get to it. The best way is by car, try UBER and get your first ride free!

Since moving to DC, we have been able to experience so many places, full of rich history. We love learning and exploring, so DC is the perfect place for us. Have you ever visited any of these 10 places for kids in DC? I’d love to hear your experience!

Dieting Hacks & Tips After Baby

It can be challenging to lose that baby weight. You may think it is absolutely insane that you aren’t losing as much as you thought you would because having a baby makes you run around like a chicken with your head cut off. However, stress is a huge factor in contributing to that stagnant weight. With that being said, here are some dieting hacks & tips after baby strategies that work!

1. Breastfeed your baby. Not only is breast milk great for baby, but breastfeeding is a great way to burn calories and help bring you back to pre-baby weight. It even helps with stubborn belly fat as it triggers your uterus to contract and shrink back down to its original size. As a first time mom (I am on my third) one thing I found very helpful were these different Breastfeeding Positions. This chart comes from WomensHealth.gov

nursing-positions

2. Exercise with your baby. Let’s face it mom; you won’t be able to do much without having baby attached to you in some way. So, make use of that baby attachment by using baby to do push ups, leg stretches, and other exercises in which your baby is used as a weight. Take a look at these Stroller Workout Ideas from Fit Mommy Diaries.

3. Drink lots of water. Water is great for your body and staying hydrated is a great way to prevent overeating. Nothing is better than purse water but if you are looking for some water flavors, try these 6 Infused Water Recipes from She Uncovered.

4. Don’t go on an extreme diet. No matter how many pounds you want to lose, going on an extreme diet can make losing those pounds harder. Take a look at this Daily Food Journal Printable from 30 Handmade Days to help inspire and keep you accountable.

daily-food-journal

5. Eat 1,800 calories a day. Eating less calories isn’t going to make things better because then your body goes into starvation mode and starts storing more fat instead of burning calories. Stay at a healthy calorie intake of 1800-2000 calories a day. Please consult your doctor about the number of calories you need per day. Feeling really hungry, take a look at this Negative Calorie Chart from Let How, eat as much of these fruits and veggies as you like!

negative-calorie-foods

6. Eat nutritious foods. Try to cut back on snack cakes, pop tarts, and snacky foods. Instead, eat foods high in nutrients such as nuts, apples, bananas, carrots, wheat crackers, and other whole foods. Fit Food Finds has 15 Superfood Bowl Recipes – I love all my food in one bowl!

superfood-bowl-recipes

7. Go on daily walks. Walks are great ways to alleviate stress which can cause weight gain. Not only is walking a great way to get into shape, but it is a great way to keep your heart healthy as well. Take a look at some of our favorite Walking and Jogging Strollers.

1.) Britax B-Agile Stroller// 2.) Graco Relay Click Connect Jogging Stroller // 3.) Baby Jogger City Mini Stroller// 4.) Baby Trend Tri-Flex Stroller // 5.) Chicco TRE Performance Jogging Stroller // 6.) Evenflo Victory Jogging Stroller Tucson // 7.) BOB Revolution PRO Stroller // 8.) Thule Urban Glide Sport Stroller

8. Go for a swim. Whether you join a gym or head to the pool, swimming is a great way to build muscle town and shrink stubborn fat. Not only is it a great way to get into shape, but swimming is easy on a new mom’s body. Daily Burn has a Swim Workout Chart for swimmers of all levels. As I prefer guided workouts with others, I personally have enjoyed water fitness classes at my gym.

9. Stretch your entire body. Stretching is just as important as it is to exercise. Stretching your muscles helps circulate blood and get your body burning calories. This is why Yoga and Pilates are some of the most powerful exercises you can do. We love this Baby Wearing Yoga Chart from Wrapsody Baby but also check out this Shiva Rea Postnatal Yoga DVD on Amazon.

10. Sleep at least 5 hours a night. Not getting adequate sleep can make it difficult to lose after baby weight. If your baby doesn’t sleep 5 hours at a time, see if someone can alternate shifts with you so you can get some sleep. Nothing is worse than the first few weeks, these are a few books that helped me get my baby on a sleep cycle.

11. Ditch the coffee with creamer. If you must have caffeine, try drinking tea or coffee without cream and sugar. Remember if you are nursing, try your best to limit the caffeine.  The Baby Center has a list of The Amount of Caffeine found in Common Drinks.

caffeine-collage-frugal-coupon-living

12. Pack snacks when you leave. You know those times you instantly get hungry from nowhere? Well, those are the times that you tend to succumb to fast food. Don’t do it. Instead, pack Ziploc bags of healthy snacks to take with you, so whenever you get hungry, you have something to curb it. Packing food ahead also helps from overeating.Ring Around the Rosies has some great 100 calorie snack bag ideas that are yummy and healthy.

healthysnacksbox8_thumb

13. Don’t buy new clothes. Motivation for getting back into your pre-pregnancy bod is that you have nothing to wear. If you want to wear something other than maternity clothes, you will have to buckle down and lose that baby weight. We were inspired by these Transitional Tops for Breastfeeding from Lynzy and Co.

breastfeeding-tops

14. Take time for you. Like I stated above, stress can contribute to your body storing fat. If you want to prevent stress from building up around your belly, take time for yourself. Take time to destress. Whether hanging out with friends, coloring, or going to the bathroom alone, take time just for you. One of my favorite things to mix with relaxation is scents – take a look at some of my favorite Essential Oils.

essential-oils

15. Baby squats. You never realize how much a baby can help you get back into shape. Use your baby to do squats and lunges to tone and strengthen your muscles. Also check out these 18 Moves for Baby and Mom from Skinny Mom.

16.) 10 Day Commitment! Go after the 10 day challenge. Anyone can do anything for 10 days! Pick up FREE Juice Plus Products for your 10 Day Shred!

When it comes to getting rid of that stubborn weight gain, the best advice is to do it all natural. What other advice do you have? Please share in the comments below! As always, when it comes to health, please consult your doctor or a physician first!

Health Smoothie Recipes with protein, vitamins and antioxidants. You will want to save this list for later!

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

If you have followed my journey, you know I just had my fourth and fifth child. With the delivery of children comes the extra pounds and weight. After my third child, I ate a lot of smoothies and was able to loose 10 to 15 lbs in two months. While this killed my milk supply (I was nursing at the time), I am once again craving smoothies (this time I just need to keep up my caloric intake.)

I pulled together some of my favorite healthy smoothie recipes. (I will worry about keeping the calories up elsewhere.) With these smoothies I have two secret weapons. My first weapon is spinach for it’s antioxidants and and it’s excellent source of vitamins. My second secret weapon is protein. Protein is by far the best ingredient you can add.  I have two favorite protein powders. 1.) Juice Plus Vanilla Protein Powder 2.) BSN Syntha-6 Protein Powder (There are so many tasty flavors but I like the Vanilla Ice Cream or Cookies and Cream.) The benefits of protein include building and repairing tissue (important if you are working out.)  Protein is the building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. It also is very filling, keeping you full and not craving junk.

I have two favorite blenders. For something quick, I love my Immersion Blender (I have the Cuisinart.) This allows me to make a single serving in my Yeti Tumbler  (less clean up!) If you are making a larger smoothie, for more than one person, I love the Ninja Professional Blender.

Healthy Tips: Most of these recipes are for one serving. Multiply as needed. I promise you will often need more than one serving as the kids and husband will also be begging for a smoothie! These are all done easily in the blender or using an immersion stick.  My favorite milk is almond milk but keep in mind it can be replaced with any kind of milk, including soy, coconut or rice milk.  Lastly, even if the recipe does not call for it, I always add a handful (or two) of spinach in my smoothies. I promise you won’t taste it and the benefits are so important! I also add protein powder – normally vanilla and just a scoop.

Now that you have the the gist and specifics of prepping smoothies, take a look at some of these amazing recipes below. One of my favorite is half a green apple, a tsp of cinnamon, a tablespoon almond butter, a scoop of vanilla protein powder, spinach and ice as needed – The Green Goddess (not listed below).

Update: Also learn about the benefits of Juice Plus!

During the beginning of the year, I took on a lifestyle change. I was dreading the diet that was beginning but after baby #3 the weight wasn’t coming off as easily as I remembered. I knew I was eating whatever I pleased. I was not eating in abundance (okay, I was a times) but I was really making the wrong choices. I took on a 28 day detox and cleanse. It focused a lot on eating protein (two shakes a day) and organically. I also was eliminating items like soy, sugar, and simple carbs. The change in eating made a world of a difference in my body. First, I always felt full. I made sure to eat every two hours. Second, I was no longer craving foods. I mean I would HAVE to eat chocolate daily. I mean, if I didn’t get this sweet treat I could go into a rage. Third, I was noticing a change in the way I felt. The weight did not drop initially but over time it did. My body recognized the change. It started burning some fat storage. In addition to looking better, I felt like I had energy.

During that detox, I watched a Documentary entitled Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. The focus of the documentary was drinking juice (made from juiced vegetables and fruits) daily. In the case of the main character, he was doing this daily for every meal. I wanted to adopt this idea daily for health, not to fill every meal.

I have found having a juicer (over a blender) is very important. The Breville is by far the most popular brand.

Below are some of the most amazing juice recipes (using a juicer) I was able to acquire in my new juicing challenge.

We are loving this winter recipe! Stuffed Spaghetti Squash Lasagna isn’t only easy on the eyes with all of the rich colors, it’s low carb and delicious! You can use two different kinds of meat to create a healthy meal that is packed with protein and veggie goodness and will be gobbled up by the pickiest eaters. It’s even perfect to make a double or triple batch and package the leftovers to reheat for lunch. We know your family will love this as much as our does!

Stuffed Spaghetti Squash Lasagna

Yields: 4 generous servings
Total Time: 2 hours

Ingredients:

  • 5 pounds spaghetti squash (2 medium-sized squash)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (or Turkey Sausage)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt, divided
  • 1 (15 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) container of ricotta cheese
  • ¼ cup parsley, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • Chopped parsley or basil to garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut the squashes in half long ways and scoop out the seeds. Lay them cut-side down in a roasting pan or other baking dish, and add approximately one inch of water. Roast for 45-60 minutes, until soft when poked with a fork.
  2. While the squash is roasting, warm the olive oil in a high-sided skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in the onions and cook until translucent, approximately 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add the ground beef and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cook until well-browned, approximately 5-8 minutes. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Continue simmering the sauce until the squashes are ready, 5-20 minutes. Taste the sauce and add more salt if desired.
  3. Use a fork to shred the inside of the squash, leaving about a half-inch of squash left in the shell. Mix the shredded squash into the tomato sauce. In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, parsley, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
  4. Wipe out the roasting pan and arrange the squash shells inside, like bowls. Use a spoon to spread ½ cup of the ricotta evenly over bottom of each shell. Spoon a ¼ of the tomato-squash mixture of the top of the ricotta. Top with another layer of ricotta and tomato sauce, using the remainder of each.*
  5. Bake shells for 15 minutes at 400 degrees F. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella over the tops of the squashes and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted. For a more golden top, broil the squashes for up to 2 minutes.
  6. Garnish with parsley or basil and serve with a green salad and garlic bread. Leftovers will keep for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.

*If making this recipe in advance, cover the shells at this point with foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add an extra 10 minutes to the cooking time.

Notes: This recipe can be made into a casserole version (leaving out the shells):

Casserole Version: In a 2-quart baking dish, layer 1/3 of the tomato-squash mixture into the dish and top with half of the ricotta. Continue building layers, ending with the last third of the tomato-squash mixture. Bake for 15 minutes, and then sprinkle with mozzarella. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until bubbly.
