Potty training can be tricky. From accidents to night-wets to consistency to motivation, we have some of the best Potty Training Tips and Tricks. Hacks to help you and your toddler succeed.

Potty Training Tips for Toddlers

Who dreads potty training? Mothers who have been there before, definitely don’t look back on this period of time with glee. I remember with my first I was in a rush to get her out of diapers and potty trained. With my second, I probably delayed longer than she needed to go but it was much easier training.

What is the best age to start potty training?

My best advice, coming from a mother who has trained five kids, is don’t rush it. I definitely had a better experience with my second having taken my time and discussed it months before actually jumping in. She also was able to see her older sibling use the potty and wanted to do the same.

What’s the best way to potty train a toddler?

When you begin training a toddler to use the restroom, plan to stay home for 3 days to a week. Tis is why summer break, spring break or Christmas break are great ideas. Give your child lots of liquids. Buy a drinking they love like apple juice for that week . I found it best to go strait to panties/underwear and to stay home. A lot of movies and a lot of fun outdoors.

Initially set a timer. If you can put your child in front of the timer, it gives them control and they like that. Consider starting with 20 minute increments. Later you can move to as much as 90 minute increments.

When you place them on the toilet, give them a little activity like a book or play potty training games.

Potty Training Tips at Nighttime

Nighttime training for toddlers comes later in the potty training process. Once your child has had a few successful weeks of using the toilet during the day, begin potty training at night.

The best advice for getting through the night was waking your child. Well not technically waking.  I picked up my child out of bed. They pretty much remained asleep and sat them on the toilet. I did this right before I went to bed, around 10 PM each evening. I whispered in their ear, “go potty” and she easily went to the restroom. This saved us a lot from bed-wetting in the night.

In addition, make sure you cut off your child’s liquids an hour or two before bed. Give them a sip of water when brushing their teeth but not too much.

Note: night training might comes easier and earlier for girls. Some boys can take a little bit longer.

Potty Training Hacks

When potty training, bring a sense of humor and perhaps a drink at night (mama needs it!)

Enjoy these Potty Training Tips and Tricks and be sure to share with us any hacks or tricks you had when training your own child to use the bathroom.

Stickers are exciting, Here’s a fun Free Printable Potty Training Chart to help your little one stay motivated during the potty training journey. (Pick up star stickers HERE) | Alice and Lois

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Pan to stay home and drink lots of liquids. This will give you toddler plenty of opportunities for practice and success!

For convenience, when potty training store the potty seat on the wall near the toilet with a Command hook.

Pull-ups has an amazing resource. Get your child excited to start potty training by receiving a phone call from one of their favorite Disney characters. | Pull-Ups

We all know that a toddler wants to do their own thing! This potty watch has three different reminder times (30, 60 or 90 minutes) plus flashing lights and music gently remind your toddler when to go. Get it HERE.

This tip comes from me! Potty training in the night can be hard. Limit liquids 1 to 2 hours before bed. I would always pick up my sleeping toddler at 10 PM (around my bed time) and sit her on the toilet. I would whisper in her ear to “go pee pee on the potty.” This limited our nighttime accidents by A LOT – almost non existent. I did this for months to close to a year. A potty light would be great for those night time visits.

Who wants to clean the poo? Use coffee filters when your child has to poop. Obviously these don’t flush, so just toss in the diaper pail. I always used a plastic grocery bag. | Mama Frankenstein (no longer available)

When traveling, you can use a diaper. Keep a cheap potty chair in your car along with a few diapers. If your child needs to go to the bathroom, open a diaper and put in the bottom of the potty chair. When he is done, wrap up the diaper and done. No mess. | A Haven of Chaos

As a mom of 5, take it from me. The worse thing to clean during potty training is the car seat after an accident. Pick up a waterproof car seat pad (or Piddlepad). We also used changing pad pads or old burp cloths. | Etsy Store LaneyJDesigns (no longer availble)

Note: please go with the directions of your car seat. Some advise no loose fabric between the child and the car seat.

Create a fun potty treat jar. One M&M for sitting on the potty, two M&Ms for going pee-pee and three M&Ms for going poo-poo. | A Pumpkin and a Princess

Put your child backwards on the toilet and give them a dry erase marker. Let them color away. | Source Unknown

Update: I would not suggest letting your child color during the potty . I would suggest starting backwards especially for young boys.

This is one of those, why didn’t’ I think of that items. My child hated the automatic flushing toilet! Carry a pack of post-it notes in your purse. In public bathrooms, place a sticky-note over the sensor to relieve fears! | My Crazy Blessed Life

Tell those cute toddlers they get to pull the paper down to the paper – and when it gets there, they tear it off! (Honestly this would work for my older kids too – anyone else!?!) | Today’s the Best Day

Speaking of the potty, another genius idea – take a look at this potty training tip! Drop blue food coloring in the potty. Tell your child when they go, the water will magically turn green! | Source Unknown

Make your own training pants for potty training with this tutorial! | Life Sew Savory

Create a potty chart with milestones… like Candyland. Place a small sticker on each hallow square and a larger sticker on each solid square. Each solid square gets a reward. | Steps Naptime Notes

Create a potty zone with books, changing of underwear, bubbles, and or something to color. You can put a puppy pad below the toilet. | Source Unknown

Pull-Ups has the Top 8 Potty Training Games | Pull-Ups

Hit up the Dollar Store or Target’s dollar section before you begin training (remember you want to be home a few days). Have a reward potty treat bag for hitting milestones.  This worked very well for our family after we were toilet trained but needed work with #2 in the toilet.| Embellish Goods

These might be useful, take a look at these Top 10 Potty Training Apps. | Source Unknown

Date Night Ideas – How We Do It With Five Kids!

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

We do it! We have weekly date nights even with five kids. Take a look at these Date Night Ideas for the home, for free, or even for special occasions out of the house. Where to find a babysitter, why date nights are important and more!

Date Night Ideas

This post isn’t late. I know Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but having a date night is more important than just on February 14th. When my husband and I first got married, date nights were not very important to me. I know that sounds silly. Honestly, coming from being a single mom, I was just grateful to have a partner to sit at home with me at the family table. I had had my fair share of dates during that time I was a single mom.

My husband, however, he wanted to court his wife. That reads incredibly sweet but it was a bit of a stressor to me. So I didn’t initially view it as sweet. I viewed it as adding something additional to my plate, I viewed it was having to get dressed and put on makeup, I view it as work to prepare the kids and try to get out the door… you get it moms, right? The perfect date for me was more like April 25th – not too hot and not too cold! Haha!

However, he was right. It wasn’t a date on the calendar, it was what we invested in each other. The more infrequent our dates become, the more I can feel the stress on our marriage. We needed to invest at least a few hours of alone time in our marriage without the distraction of kids, tv, chores, etc in the home.

Thus, began, our weekly date nights.

Date Night 101

When you need a date night, but don’t know how to go about it, you may need Date Night 101. Dating your spouse is important, especially if you have kids. It’s easy for your relationship to fall to the wayside. Focusing on each other for a certain amount of time each week can really help your relationship grow. I’ve tried to cover every aspect of a date night to help make it successful for you and your spouse.

Date Night Bucket List

What if you have a sitter but you don’t know where to start with WHAT to do? I want you to check out my Date Night Bucket List. This is a list of items will help you narrow down exactly what you want to do! It’s fun to get ideas from a bucket list and then execute those ideas.

Free Date Night Ideas

What if you have a sitter but need to stay on budget? There are lots of free date night ideas out there. Some ideas that I have for a free date night is making dinner at home, taking a walk at the park, taking a hike in your favorite park, head to a local book store and look at the books, go to a free museum, head to the beach, play a sport together, or just sit and talk!

You can see more free date nights in our Date Night Bucket List.

Elaborate Date Night Ideas

Sometimes you need a fancy night out. Maybe you and your spouse haven’t been out in a while and you just want to do something fun together without worrying about money. We do a date like this at least once every few months.

  • Do a weekend away
  • Wine tasting
  • A night out on the town
  • Go to a fancy restaurant
  • Ballroom dancing

Date Night at Home Ideas

A few truths. It’s possible that you won’t be able to find a babysitter, but you still need that quality time with your spouse. Go ahead and look into date night ideas right at home. Dating your mate is important, and it doesn’t need to be difficult.

Here are a few date night ideas at home to help you out:

  • Have a BBQ after the kids go to bed
  • Cook a dinner together, right at home
  • Have a dessert night where you eat your favorite desserts
  • Have a game night at home
  • Order takeout
  • Have a movie night
  • Have a game night together
  • Sit on the patio and have cocktails
  • Tell Alexa to play romantic music.

If you are feeling the love, try a Date Night Box Subscription or Date Night Cards.

Some of these Date Night at Home Ideas are creative and fun, also make an effort to go out. I really fought my spouse hard to have more date nights at home, but he was right in his rebuttal. I exclusively focus on him if I am away from my home. I am tried at home, I have a long list of things to do, and the kids will all fight for my attention. While, on the occasion or even season, it is okay, hire a sitter to help you get out of the house.

Where to Find a Babysitter

Finding a babysitter can be well… interesting. We have had a few that clearly were not a fit. You have seen that Luvs Second Kid Babysitter commercial, right? On some nights, this was me!

If you don’t have family close and can’t rely on someone you know to watch your kids, this can be hard! There are some solutions to finding a babysitter.

Split Your Kids Among Friends: It may be hard for one friend to take on all of your kids, so split them up! All the kids don’t need to be together in order for the parents to getaway.

Trade Babysitting Nights: Trade babysitting with another mom. While this can be harder, it is possible to make it work.

Word of Mouth: You can ask friends for a referral to one of their favorite babysitters. Word of mouth is always the best way to hire someone. I have also asked around and found babysitters  in church nursery and have even found some on local Facebook groups.

Stalk the Park: Don’t think I am kidding. My kids were playing at the park one day and I observed a babysitter with another child. She was doing great and I thought, she would be a perfect fit for my kids. She was with a a year before going to college!

Care.com

Sometimes the best way to find a babysitter is to head to Care.com to find one. If you don’t have family in the area, it’s best to choose a platform like this that can help you find someone that fits your style. Not all babysitters are easy to find. Care.com will help cut out the middleman and help you find a babysitter that can make those date nights a reality.

Care.com is how we found our Nanny. We had a nanny for two years before our three boys were old enough to attend preschool. For us it was more affordable than full time preschool. She also was so incredibly helpful by making dinner, running errands, doing small chores, etc.

Have you heard someone say, we or I don’t have time for that? The truth is as moms, there are some things we really don’t have time for, but we do have time for what we put first. My advice to you is to make date night a priority. If you don’t, they will never happen. When they have time to happen (like the kids are all finally out of the house), you might look at your spouse and think – who is this man? Don’t let that happen. Don’t grow part, make your marriage first.

Whether you do date nights at home or hire a sitter, use these tips to help you date night happen with your spouse.

Tips for Throwing a Baby Shower

Throwing a baby shower helps mom-to-be get the things she needs and figure out what she still needs to get before the baby gets here. Depending on the mood swings of mom-to-be and the situation, throwing a baby shower can be stressful, but these tips for throwing a baby shower will make your life easier.

Update: Since originally posting, we have put together 16 Printable Baby Shower Games that you can print!

Tips for Throwing a Baby Shower

Start planning early: Start planning early before it’s even remotely close to throwing the baby shower. Mom-to-be may change her mind several times on the theme of the shower. Make lists and keep the ideas in a safe place, so you can refer back to them.

Create a budget for the baby shower: If you go overboard, a baby shower can cost way more than it actually should. Set yourself a maximum budget. If your budget is on the lower end, make your own invitations, party favors, or shop several places for the least expensive items.

Send out invites early enough, but not too late in the game: Because people work on all days and all different hours, it is polite to give them enough time to either take off or change their schedule for the shower. A good rule of thumb is to send invitations out exactly 1 month in advance, so there is enough time to take off work, but not enough time to forget.

Baby Shower Games Ideas Printable

Come up with some creative games for the baby shower: There are tons of variations of baby shower games. A quick internet search is sure to bring you hundreds to choose from.

Download our Printable List of Six Baby Shower Games

Here are a few personal favorites:

Poopy Diapers: No one likes a poopy diaper, but with this game, your friends and family get to smell them and see what it “really” is. Melt different chocolate candies on different diapers and whoever guesses the right candy wins a prize.

Guess the Mom’s size: This can be done my guessing mom’s actual measurement, or by using TP to count how many sheets around she is. The closest wins a prize.

My Water Broke: Place a tiny plastic baby into your ice trays before you freeze your ice. At the beginning of the shower give everyone an ice cube to put in their glass. When the ice melts and the baby floats to the top, the first person to shout “My water broke,” wins a prize.

Don’t get upset if people don’t come: Make the most of the party and those who arrived. Mom- to-be is going to be thoroughly exhausted by the time her shower is over. She isn’t going to be concerned with who is there; she is going to be concerned with “how long are they staying?”

Keep the baby shower focused on the mom-to-be: Make sure that in merry-making you focus everyone’s attention on mom-to-be 2-3 times during the shower. Remember, the party is about her and baby and she needs the support of everyone.

Get help to clean up: Designate a few attendees to help you clean up at the end. You can have this planned early, or just ask people when they show up. The clean-up is much quicker and easier than the setup, but after a long party and lots of planning, it’s always nice to get some help.

Create a cute theme for the baby shower: All baby showers need a theme. Let’s face it; the “it’s a boy” “It’s a girl” has been done a million times. Be creative with your themes such if mom-to-be has twins try “Jumping Monkeys.” If she is having a baby girl, try “Princess of the Womb.” For a boy, you could do “Spider Boy.” Always ask mom-to-be her opinion before choosing a theme.

Ask others to help pitch in with food: You don’t have to be responsible for all the meal prep. If you are throwing the party, you need to be spending time mingling and making the party about mom-to-be. Especially with good friends, with your RSVP, ask attendees to choose what items they can help with, so you know you have food coming. Many of the expecting mother’s friends are wanting to do more, so this is a great way to incorporate their help.

Many winter activities for families are done indoors, but you don’t have to sit at home bored all the time! If you live in a snowy area of the US, you’ll definitely find lots of ways to have fun for your winter family checklist. You can build your own Frosty, make snow angels or have a snowball fight!

Even if you don’t get a lot of snow where you live, you can still enjoy this winter family bucket list. You just may need some more creative ideas!

Declutter Challenge for Kids

Feeling overwhelmed? Have you stepped on your last LEGO or have you yelled for the very last time “clean up your room“? I get it. With five kids and too many spaces to organize, I have had to lead my kids into creating better organizational habits.

Guide your child to developing new organizational skills with a printable resource and guide; a printable 7-Day Kid’s Declutter Challenge Checklist PDF.

In this seven day cleaning challenge, kids will how to clean their bedroom room in small steps. In seven days time, they will have a clean space organized and free of clutter.

How to Clean Your Room for Kids

In this tidy up challenge, steps are broken down into days, leading your child on a decluttering journey.

Day 1:  Pick up any toys that are on the floor and sort through them. Keep your favorites & get rid of the ones you no longer play with.

Day 2: Make your bed and clean up under the bed. Throw away any garbage and put away what you want to keep. Tidy up your nightstand.

Day 3: Pick up any dirty clothes lying around and put them in your laundry hamper & vacuum entire floor. Don’t forget under the bed!

Day 4: Tidy up your closet. Ask mom or dad to help you sort through your clothing. Keep your favorites & get rid of the ones you no longer need.

Day 5: Organize all of your books & art supplies. Tidy up your workspace.

Day 6: Tidy up your playroom floor and go through your toys. Put way the toys you want and get rid of the toys you no longer play with

Day 7: Vacuum your playroom floor and finish tidying up. Make sure everything is in its place!

Hey Mom! This list can be overwhelming. This is why we have broken it down in seven days. It is important the first time you attempt this list, you model steps for your child. Instead of investing hours in each day, set a timer and do each day’s task for 20 minutes. You can repeat it in future weeks. If this is something that will not be challenging for your child, take all 7 days and knock it out in one day or weekend.

Also take a look at our daily/weekly kid’s cleaning checklist. This can keep your hard work maintained and also sets responsibilities and good daily habits for your child. We suggest laminating the checklist and letting them complete it on a certain day of the week, on the weekend, weekly or even daily! Adapt the timeline to what works in your home.
