Having a birthday party on a budget isn’t always easy, but it’s possible! Finding low cost party ideas just takes a little time and effort. If you don’t have the time or even if you don’t want to put in the effort, then these tips are for you! Sacrifice on the wallet but not the fun!

cheap birthday party ideas low-cost party for kids and adults

Birthday celebrations can be expensive. But there are cheap and inexpensive ways to make an adults’ or kid’s birthday fun. These fun ideas are affordable and easy to set up for friends and family of any age.

I’m going to walk you through having a fun birthday party on the budget. From party ideas to activities, you will be able to put together an amazing party and all on a budget!

How to have a birthday party on a budget

Are you looking to celebrate a birthday but don’t want to spend a lot of money? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey, the average person spends about $600 on their birthday celebrations. But there’s no need to break the bank just to have a good time.

Cheap birthday parties for those on a budget can still turn out great. You really just have to focus on the areas that you want to spend money on and the other areas you can do on a budget! For example, you may want to go all out on the cake, but save money on the gifts. With a little bit of creativity, you can still have a fantastic birthday party without blowing your budget.

Here are some tips for cheap birthday party ideas:

Set a budget and stick to it

This is probably the most important tip when it comes to having a child’s birthday party on a budget. Decide how much you’re willing or able to spend beforehand, and then make sure all of your decisions reflect that budget. Start with the item that is most important to you. One that you are not willing to spend less on. Start there and then start researching the rest of the party ideas.

Get creative with the guest list

Instead of inviting everyone you know, be selective about who you invite. You can still have a great time with fewer people in attendance. Plus, this will allow you to focus your spending on making sure those who do attend have an amazing time. The individuals that were not invited to this party can be guests for another occasion.

DIY as much as possible

Another great way to save money is by doing things yourself instead of hiring someone else to do them for you. For example, if you’re good at baking, why not make your own cake instead of buying one? Or if you’re crafty, you could make your own invitations or decorations instead of buying them from a store. Pinterest and bloggers provide a lot of ideas for DIY party favors, printable banners, and even low-cost themed birthday party ideas.

Think outside the box when it comes to activities

Just because there’s no money for entertainment doesn’t mean your guests will be bored. There are plenty of fun games and activities that don’t cost anything to play. For example, charades, scavenger hunts, karaoke and printable themed party games are all great options that are sure to keep your guests happy and entertained.

Save on the Venue

In addition to thinking outside the box for birthday party activities, also think outside the box for the party room. Public, national, and local parks are often affordable places. Think of all the places friends have had parties. Now cross those ideas off. Why, because they are popular and popular means there is an up charge in cost – supply vs demand.  This past year, we found a small fish tank aquarium. It had an outdoor place for the kids to play and it might have been the best, most affordable party we ever had. Parents raved about the venue and no one had every been there before. By finding something that was not “common” we saved a lot. If the venue place is still too much, have a party at your home or in your backyard.

Having a birthday party on a budget is totally possible, you just need to get creative! By following these low-cost party tips, you can throw an amazing bash without breaking the bank in the process!

What activities do children like to do on their birthdays?

Still looking for inexpensive birthday party ideas? Birthdays are a special time for kids. It’s a day when they get to feel extra special and loved. Having a few family-only birthday traditions are a great way to recognize the guest of honor. If you’re looking for some fun ideas to make your child’s birthday even more special, look no further!

Here are some great low cost party ideas for celebrating birthdays with kids. Create these fun birthday ideas with a party of two to a party of 30!

Get some yummy food and drinks and have a picnic lunch outside! This is a great way to enjoy the nice weather and have some quality time with your child. Find a unique place to eat like on top of a big rock in the middle of a creek or downtown in the city with tall buildings.

Make a cake

Let your child help you make their birthday cake! Make your own DIY cake mix or pick up a boxed mix. They’ll love being able to help out and will be so excited to eat their creation. You can even let them make their own miniature cake (or cupcake) and have a larger cake for the family to share. This can be done with themed party food or party snacks too.

Kids Party Games

I mentioned earlier, saving money on the things you can. Decide what’s most important to you, then save on the rest. Having a birthday party allows your child to feel important. It puts them at the center of attention.  The goal is a fun birthday party that gives your child self affirmation and positive feelings of oneself.

Everyone knows that the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the Nutcracker Ballet! This Printable Nutcracker Activity for Kids is so much imaginative fun. Not only can they print out the various Nutcrackers scenes, but they’ll have the printable paper dolls to go along with it, as well. When it comes to Christmas Placemats Activities, adding this printable Nutcracker scene activity to the table might be the perfect holiday addition.

cute nutcracker printables christmas activity set for kids

Part of getting excited and ready for the holidays is thinking about all the Christmas classics from the past. Since The Nutcracker Ballet is one that everyone loves and knows, it just makes sense to have fun activities surrounding that theme!

What I love about this holiday printable activity is that it’s a great way to get the kids active and involved. They’ll love being able to turn the pages, change the scenes, and have the paper dolls be a part of the fun.

They could even have their own Nutcracker theater and put on quite the play! Have everyone in the family gather around and sit down to watch the show. It’s truly magical to see the excitement of Christmas through the eyes of the kids!

If you’re looking for fun Christmas activities, look no further than this printable Nutcracker scene. It’s a fun place-setting idea, a great interactive activity, and a fun way to get everyone excited for the holidays.

How does this printable Nutcracker activity work?

christmas crafts printable nutcracker activity set for kids

It’s as simple as printing out the pages and then piecing them together to make fun scenes from The Nutcracker. The paper dolls can be used on every page to make the story come to life.

Once it’s put together, there are parts and pieces that can be moved around and used differently throughout the rest of the printable set.

This is where creativity and imagination come into play and makes it super fun to use over and over again. Flipping the pages and having the paper dolls in various different scenes is a simple way to make this Nutcracker idea and activity unique and different every time.

Can this nutcracker printable be used by one person?

You bet! It’s a super fun activity for one or multiple! All you have to do is print, and then whoever wants to join in on the fun can absolutely do so. This is a great way to imagine and then make it happen, which is what little kids love to do!

I do recommend that there be a part of adult hands to help out with the little hands in making and putting this together. Adult supervision and help are always welcomed. (plus, the bonus of creating it together is an awesome memory!)

Supplies

  • Printer
  • Small, sharp scissors
  • Glue or glue stick
  • Cardstock or printer paper (I love this set!)
  • Laminator (this is optional – but I love laminating my stuff!)
  • Ruler or straight edge
  • printable Nutcracker arts & crafts activity pack on nine template sheets

What’s included with this Nutcracker theater scene printable?

This would also be super cute to have on the holiday table as a unique centerpiece or even a fun place mat on the kid’s plates to give them something to do with their hands while they’re waiting for dinner.

How to create a Nutcracker Travel Set

Perhaps while you create your christmas craft, turn on Youtube the classical music from the Nutcracker by composer Tchaikovsky. This might give you a little inspiration and Christmas cheera s you make your Nutcracker traveling set.

how to make nutcracker travel set

First, download and print your printable nutcracker activity set. If working with preschoolers or toddlers, have older children or adults guide them through the activity. We find cardstock works great but printer paper is just fine.

To begin, use the ruler and back blunt edge of your scissors to score the two dotted lines of Page 1. Fold both of the lines inward to form the base.

Next cut out the flap from page 2. Use the ruler and back edge of your scissors to score the single dotted line. Fold this line back.

Place the flap over the right, short edge of the base. Glue the underside of the flap to the front, outside, folding it over the base, forming an envelope.

Open the base up all the way with the white side up on a flat surface. The flap should be on the right.

Cut out the two pockets from page 3. Score along the dotted lines of each envelope and fold these inward.

Apply glue to the flaps and adhere each pocket to the bottom left and bottom right of the base. Line the edges up with the outside edges of the base page.

cute nutcracker scene printable

Next, cut out the top and side curtains from page 4. Score the curtains along the dotted lines. Fold the flaps back.

Apply glue to the flaps of the middle curtain and glue it to the top of the base, carefully centering it in the middle, about I/8th of an inch from the very top edge. After the middle curtain dries in place, flip it up.

Now, glue the two side curtains in the same manner, lining them up along each side edge of the base page. Set aside.

land of sweets nutcracker printable scence

Cut out the three stage scenes Prom pages 5 – 7. Fold each scene in half, carefully folding, then creasing them down the middle.

Glue the back right of scene 1 to the back left of scene 2. Next, glue the back right of scene 2 to the back right of scene 3. This will create a small booklet of scenes.

Next, open up all curtain flaps. Glue the backs of the booklet in place, carefully centering it between the two side curtains and about I/16th down from the top curtain flap fold.

To change scenes, open the three curtain flaps, turn the booklet page, then place the curtain flaps back down into place.

printable nutcracker scenes

Cut out all dancers and decorations. These items don’t have to be cut exactly. It’s Pine to leave some white space around the edges. Categorize the items and place them into the correct envelopes, Dancers or Decorations. (These would be fine laminated if you want to keep them in good shape.)

Now carefully fold the Nutcracker Kit in half. Use the flat end of your scissors or the end of a ruler to re-crease the folds so they are sharp.

Finally, cut out the long band and decorative sticker from page 2. Starting at the center front, hold the end in place, then wrap the long band all the way around the short width of the base kit, creasing the band as you go.

Apply glue to the back of the decorative snow-flake sticker to connect the band in the front. Make sure that you only glue the band together. Don’t glue the band to your base!

Enjoy your entire land of sweets travel kit during the Nutcracker season.

Enjoy this fun 4-in-1 printable scavenger hunt bundle. These baby shower games include 20 scavenger hunt clues and riddles for solving. Reveal a baby’s gender, a baby’s name or uncover prizes and baby shower party favors. In addition, play a quick and easy what’s in your purse baby shower game.

baby shower scavenger hunt

Do you have a baby shower or gender reveal party coming up? If so, you likely are looking for activities for the guest of honor and all her shower guests.  Typically a stork party is a place where moms have slipped away from the home leaving behind cares and worries. They are ready to mingle with friends and celebrate the expectant mother.

Because of the relaxed carefree atmosphere, baby shower games are a great way to create laughter, teamwork and leave behind a trail of fun memories. These can come in all shapes or forms including fun activities like The Price is Right, What’s In your Purse and even a fun treasure hunt.

If you want to have baby shower games that all of the attendees but especially the mom-to-be will love, then you might really enjoy this baby shower scavenger hunt!

How to Use Baby Shower Scavenger Hunt

This baby shower scavenger hunt is perfect for a baby shower that is being held in someone’s home. If you will not be within a home, you could also set it up at a venue with a little bit of creativity. You will simply need to “stage” the venue with appropriate areas, for example, baby outfits hanging on a rack to represent the “closet”or a baby tub (that you can gift the mom-to-be) for the bathroom or bathtub.

The baby items around the venue area will act like a home. Player can then zoom through the area trying to solve the list of baby rhymes.

Fun Baby Themed Riddles

This scavenger hunt has a set of 20 rhyming clues that are meant to help your shower guests find the next clue. Examples of some of the baby inspired riddles are “ Ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes. Go to where the baby will put their folded clothes”, and “Rub-a-dub-dub, oh what a delight. Go where the baby will be bathed each and every night”.

Other rhyming clues include “ The next clue you look for is presently hiding where the baby will spend a lot of time riding” (aka car seat) and “Baby will get lots of lovin, the end of the hunt is revealed baking in the oven.” Stumped? Don’t worry, answers are given with the printable set – plus you want to make this challenging so it becomes a real competition.

How to Play a Baby Shower Scavenger Hunt

To paly this baby shower scavenger hunt, print all 20 scavenger hunt clues. Next cut the nursery rhymes out. Decide what clues are best for you to use for your party location and scavenger hunt purpose – for example, if you are not revealing the gender, take out the clues that say its a boy or girl.

Once you have chosen the right cards, hide the clue cards in the appropriate spot. Make sure to save the first card to start the game! If you are going to have the guests play this game in teams, make sure to print off two of the starting cards! You can then create a time limit and see who completes the hunt the fastest.

You could also use this scavenger hunt to reveal the little one’s name, just leave a single letter where each clue is found. You can also leave small prizes like candy or candles for each guest to take one, or have a larger prize for the winner of the scavenger hunt!

How to Use a Baby Shower Scavenger Hunt

gender reveal baby shower scavenger hunt game

This baby scavenger hunt is perfect for all mommys and daddys. It’s a four in one set, that means it has many purposes.

Fun ideas for how to use this cute treasure hunt include…

  1. Prizes & Party Favors: Have guests find prizes or baby shower party favors
  2. Reveal the Name of Baby: Leave a letter of the name with each clue then unscramble the letters to solve the name reveal.
  3. Gender Reveal: This can also be done for a baby’s gender reveal. Of the set of scavenger hunt riddles, two included clues reveal “It’s a Boy!” or “It’s a Girl!”

Variations to this scavenger hunt include revealing the gender of the baby at the end! There is a card that says “We’re over the moon, this is such a thrill! We are delighted to say “It’s a girl””, and “We’re over the moon, and overcome with joy. We are delighted to say that it’s a boy!” respectively.

There also in an additional purse scavenger hunt game – this means guests enver have to leave their seat!

What’s in your Purse?

While you are waiting for all of your baby shower guests to arrive there is another type of scavenger hunt that you can play. There is a printable baby shower scavenger hunt game that involves the items you might find in your purse. Give each guest a copy of the “what’s in your purse?” baby shower scavenger hunt and a pen, whoever has the most points at the end will win a prize.

What's in your Purse baby shower game printable

Items that are commonly found in your purse such as keys, credit cards, tissues, pens, checkbooks, and rewards cards are only worth a single point per item. Mints, hairbrushes, toys, bandaids, sunglasses, and hand lotion are worth two points each.

Items that are a little less common are worth more points. You can receive five points per item for a paper grocery list, receipt, cash, a phone charger, or a tape measure. For ten points per item, your guests can look for a paperclip, a utensil, a passport, underwear, or a picture of the mom-to-be!

This is a fun game, and you never know what oddities someone might have in their purse! Maybe even have a prize for the most unusual item found in one’s purse – we all know we’ve had some strange things, ladies.

Who loves playing holiday games? These free printable Thanksgiving Charades are the best way to have some family time. Just print the Thanksgiving Chardes game, and let the fun begin! When it comes to fun Thanksgiving games, you’re going to want to add these free printable charades to your list!

free thanksgiving charades cards printable

It’s safe to say that holiday games and activities are a must for the winter break and are a great way to have everyone in the family join in on the family game night fun.

The fun part about playing charades is that it’s different each time you play it. Each person will act out the cards and words in their own special way, making it unique and hilarious each and every time.

Being able to print out these Thanksgiving charade ideas and have everyone in the family join in and play sounds like the perfect holiday party! Just be ready – there might be a little bit of friendly competition happening in the house!

If you’re looking for fun Thanksgiving activities, charades need to be on your radar! These Thanksgiving charades for kids are great for all ages to join in on the excitement!

How do you play Thanksgiving charades?

All you need is this Thanksgiving list of words to get started! That doesn’t mean that you can’t add more (and I’ve included blank sheets for you to do just that!) if you want!

Start by splitting up into teams, and then fold up the Thanksgiving words and have the person who will be acting out the clue pick one. If their team members can guess what they’re acting out before the time runs out, their team earns a point!

Take turns with teams, and the team who ends up with the most points wins!

How many people do you need to play charades?

how to play charades with thanksgiving charades cards

For this inclusive game, you can literally play this group game with 2-20 people! (or more!) You really just need someone to be able to act out the clues and someone to guess them. But I can promise that the more people you have, the crazier the game gets!

The object of the game is to act out a word or use words to describe the word. Just be careful you don’t use the word. You can use props, hand gestures or even a drawing board. The first team will choose a player to do the motions. The actor will stand in front of the room, while the rest of the team guesses the word. You can set a timer or create a time limit to keep the game moving along. Keep track of the amount of points and at the end you can declare a winner.

You can also just play this charades game for fun. You don’t even have to keep points or pick and “winner” if you don’t want to. See how many you can get in a specific amount of time – and have fun doing so.

huge list of holiday party games for the entire year

Activities during a holiday season are part of tradition. Most everyone can claim a busy calendar filled with parties and activities during a holiday season. Bringing together low-cost party entertainment can be a bit of a challenge. Entertainment can feel quite costly and often absorbs most of the party budget. However, having a good time is actually quite affordable and planning for a holiday party can be just as fun as the actual party itself.

If you are on a party planning committee of one or part of a group of people to host a party, this blog post is for you! Spice up your next get-together with these fun party games and activities. Learn how to take simple party games and ideas and turn them into amazing holiday party games for adults or DIY party games for kids with just a simple twist of the theme and/or directions.

What games are usually played at a party?

It’s not too complicated to come up with games for a party. There are many classic games that have been played at your earliest party memories. However, if you want guests to have a ridiculously fun time, it’s important to come up with traditional party games only offering a twist. This makes a common game into a fun game you’ve probably never played before.

Good party game ideas incorporate everyone, create ice breakers and bonding amoung teammates and offer a little bit of friendly competition.  Good games create banter, laughter, and innocent fun.

A few games that are good for a party include…

  • Twister

  • Charades

  • Truth or Dare

  • Pin the Tail on the Donkey

  • Musical Chairs

  • Pictionary

  • Trivia

  • Bingo

  • Piñata

However, the rules of everyone one of these common games can be used to turn into a new unique game you’ve never played before. When you take a good party game and turn it into something of your own, it creates a memorable time for party guests. Positive memories mean good times.

Now that we know of these fun party activities, let’s learn how we can turn them into incredibly awesome holiday party games for the entire year and any occasion and age group.

What makes a good party game?

A good game usually fits a themed party. Whether your hosting a holiday party, birthday party, or office party, create group games based on your party theme. Instead of reinventing the wheel, start with many of your classic and traditional games and add fun flare based on the type of party you are having. Next, consider your audience and their skill level and go from there. Many children’s games can be used for young kids or adapted into hilarious party games for adults who like to have fun!

It’s easy to create a good party game when you start with a simple game and gift it a twist. For example, if you are hosting a Christmas party, turn a limbo game into Santa Belly Limbo. Have participants wear a Santa hat, ugly sweaters and put a “Santa belly” under their shirt using a balloon (or pillows.) Use a roll of wrapping paper as a limbo stick and continue to follow the rules of Limbo, lowering the roll of gift wrap the game until you have one winner remaining. You turned a dull game into a perfect game for Christmas.

Classic Party Games

the best holiday party games

Let’s start by taking a look at these fun traditional party games. The goal is to take these classic games and turn them into something themed.

Scavenger Hunts

A scavenger hunt is a game in which a list of items or places are discovered. A scavenger hunt can use a checklist, where each item is crossed off the list when found or it can include a series of clues in which contests race to solve and discover new clues. Scavenger hunts are often holiday themed and can also be called treasure hunts as the end of the journey usually includes a price. Host scavenger hunts in teams of two, in groups, or as individual players playing against a clock.

Holiday Trivia

How did we even play trivia before the days of Google. Let’s all take a minute and thank Google for all if it’s factual knowledge. Whatever the occasion, begin to research your trivia. Take your theme and Google search (insert holiday name) trivia. Immediately, you can declare your self an expert in such and such holiday. If hosting a holiday party about a a particular someone, frame all the quiz questions around them. Drill them with questions before the event and find out who knows them best. Chances are every party as a certain hot shot that can’t wait to be called the trivia master.

Bingo

We know B-I-N-G-O is more than a dog. Bingo is a quick and easy game to unload a bunch of prizes. They are excellent for kids party games or can be use for adults too. For example, use these free Bingo Cards. Print and play. If hosting a party for kids, have a bunch of fun trinkets and party favors. Not only does it fill the party with plenty of positive energy, it keeps the kids occupied. If hosting a party for adults. consider mini cocktail bottles as party favors. They can be the catalyst or start to your drinking party games for later in the evening.

Charades

Charades can be played with any type of word or phrase. Words (and phrases) are placed on a card and drawn blindly from a hat or bag. A person from each team goes to the front of the room to act out the phrase while their teammates try to guess what they are silently acting out. There are two sets of rules for charades games. The game of charades tends to be funnier as the party goes on.

Pass the Gift

Pass the gift or pass the parcel is a great party game for teens, kids and even adults. There are many times of party games where a gift is passed along. This can include a white elephant gift exchange game. This game is usually played with dice and directions are given based on the number rolled on the dice. At the end of the game, each person goes home with a fun present. You can also play pass the parcel where small presents are on different layers of a gift wrapped in wrapping paper or cling film plastic wrap. You can insert small themed party favors, gift cards, trinkets and more.  Choose the layers to have themed goodies fitting for the holiday party you are throwing.

Board Games

When bringing board games to a holiday party, you need to consider the amount of guests that are invited. Board games are often limited by players. You can always extend the amount of players that can play by grouping up players. You also can host board games at various tables and locations in your home (or holiday party venue location.) A list of creative-thinking good board games for a party include Taboo, Scattergories, Jenga, Ticket to Ride, Clue, Apples to Apples, Chutes and Ladders, Uno, or Cranium.

Also take a look at our list of Family Game Night Game Ideas.

Lets look at some of these traditional party activities and turn them into party games for indoor and outdoor parties. With a bit of a twist, let’s make create them into holiday activities that will have guests engaged and having fun. Keep the good times rolling with these crowd-pleasing activities for a any year-round holiday gathering.

Christmas Party Games

the best holiday party games for Christmas parties

Who doesn’t love a good holiday party for Christmas. From the office, to youth groups, to the classroom and neighborhood, Christmas is a great time for a holiday party with games. Each person with a spoon and ornament must carry the ornament on the spoon to a designated spot and back. Have a Giant roll of plastic wrap and a lot of small gifts. Place a small ball at the center and start wrapping the ball with plastic wrap. As you go, randomly add in small toys, gifts, candy or even gift cards. You will end up with a ginormous ball filled with fun! The game is played with dice. Sit in a circle and have one person rolling while the other starts unwrapping the giant ball. No ripping. As soon as the person rolling the dice rolls doubles, pass the gift (or the ball to them) and pass the dice to the left. The game continues. Whatever items you unwrap are yours to keep!

The Good List

You’ll need: Paper, pencil.

How to score: The player that gets the most points, wins.

The goal is to choose answers on The Good List (answers that MOST people would choose.) Have a slip of paper for keeping score. Call out a question and have everyone write down their answer. After everyone is done, hold up the answers. If 3 or more people answer they same they each get 3 points, 2 people 2, 1 person has the same answer, they each get one point. Example Questions Include: Name Santa’s favorite reindeer. The best dessert of Christmas. The ultimate Christmas Carol. The best color for Christmas. The best Christmas movie ever.
