Are you a new mom (or seasoned mom) in need of monthly baby photo ideas? Track your baby’s age in 1 – 12 month baby photo ideas. In addition to some amazing month to month baby photoshoot ideas, download our free monthly printable milestone stickers and signs for your baby’s first year.
Monthly-Baby-Photo-Ideas-Frugal-Coupon-Living-Short

We are expecting and with the upcoming birth of a newborn, I am in nesting mode. Nesting mode for me includes planning how I am going to take those adorable 0 to 12 month photos (and as I plan and look at ideas, wondering if I will give up after 3 months!) Take a look at the creative Monthly Baby Photo Ideas below.

We think you might get inspired like us!

This post as been updated! You can view the blog post about the birth story of my twin boys.

How do I take the best milestones photos in baby’s first year?

One thing monthly baby picture ideas have in common is they are taken in exactly the same location with very similar props. Staging monthly pictures the same way for the first 12 months of life allows the viewer (aka parents, grandparents and all those who will coo) to see how much baby has grown. Take this photo month by month. You can use the same date of the month, usually around their date of birth.

Fun ideas for milestone baby photos include a Moses basket, a bedroom chair, a milestone blanket and/or monthly signs. Another adorable idea is to have your child in the same outfit as a newborn all the way to a one year old. This really shows how big baby has gotten as they begin to fill in their onesie or t-shirt.

How can you use monthly baby photo ideas?

When taking photos every month during your child’s first year of life, ask yourself how do you want to use these photos. Most people use this cuteness to share to social media or even print for a baby book. However, you can also turn these photos in to artwork or birthday party décor for a baby’s first birthday. When you are done with all your staged photos, combine them into one file in 4×3 or 3×4 setting. This gives you 12 images to see how baby has grown. You can use this combined file to print on a canvas and hang your child’s room or in the hallway. Canva is a great free resource for combining all twelve images into one image.

How can I calm my baby down for a photoshoot?

Guess what. In the first year (and maybe the next 18 years) babies are in charge of the photoshoot. In order to get the best photos, consider your child’s schedule. Make sure they are fed, changed and well rested. The best photo shoots occur shortly after a feed when baby has had time to digest and play. Be careful not to get too close too naptime.

Once baby has gotten upset during a photo shoot, trying to continue shooting might not be a great strategy. Consider calming baby with milk or an outdoor walk. If baby cannot calm, put your photoshoot props aside. Give yourself grace. A five month old photo doesn’t have to be taken on exactly five months old. Five months and one day or five months and two days is still just as precious.

Fun Ideas for 1 – 12 Month Old Baby Photos

Watching baby grow can be lots of fun (and oh so sad too!) No matter the emotions it brings, every mama watch to capture that growth spurt in time. Capture those special moments with baby photographs every month. There’s no need for a professional photographer. These adorable DIY ideas for monthly baby photos will give you amazing photo inspiration during baby’s first year of life.

First let’s start with a free digital download. Use this free printable as inspiration as you look at all of these cute monthly baby ideas. They are the perfect prop for your lasting memory.

We had so much fun with the 25 Homemade Advent Calendars we wanted to create a freebie of our own. Pick up these free Advent Calendar Stickers and have fun creating our homemade calendar. These stickers have a wood, gold, cream color palette. First, lets talk about what is an advent calendar and how to make your own.

Do Advent Calendars go to 24 or 25?

Well first let’s address this common question. How many numbers does an Advent Calendar have? There answer is 24 as you will begin a calendar on December 1st and end on Christmas Eve. The goal of an Advent Calendar tradition is to count down the days UNTIL Christmas. However, it’s not uncommon for you to have the number 25 as some want to also celebrate the advent calendar season on Christmas day too. You do, you. 24 or 25, both Advent calendar recognition the anticipation of Christmas, aka the birth of Christ.

What you need to make a DIY Advent Calendar

You don’t have to be an expert woodsmith to make an advent calendar. You can quickly put together this Christmas countdown by grabbing a few supplies around your home and downloading our free stickers. This is a fun Christmas craft to do with the kids. In addition to the nativity, it quickly tells the story of Christmas as you anticipate the birth of Jesus.

Supplies

If you are a crafter, it’s easy to pull together this homemade advent calendar. Grab many items from your craft supply closet.

supplies for a DIY advent calendar with stickers

The items including in this DIY Sticker advent calendar include…

  • brown paper bags
  • card stock/paper or sticker sheets paper
  • 1.5 hole punch
  • scissors
  • twine or string
  • Christmas washi tape
  • glue stick or glue
  • mini clothes pins
  • mini ornaments
  • free Christmas advent calendar printable (see below

free printable advent calendar stickers cute

The best paper bags are mini kraft paper bags though you can use brown lunch bags too.

Directions

String the twine of choice across in a length to fit 24 bags. I used a wooden picture frame and measured one string across my frame to see how many bags would fit on each row – in my case, I could get 6 bags on a row for a total of 4 rows.

Place your treat/gift in your bags and fold. Place Washi tape down the center for decoration.

diy advent calendar bags with free printable sitckers

Stick (sticker paper) or glue (card stock paper) number on bag. We prefer the bags in numerical order, but you make a random collage of numbers out of order.

Clip each bag to your twine/string with clothes pins. Start another row.

Decorate with mini ornaments or perhaps fun Christmas lights.

Tips: Depending on what you are placing inside the bags (weight) you may need to use push pins or something more secure to hold the string on your surface. A nice suggestion would to use a framed cork board behind your frame.

Ideas for Advent Bags

what to fil inside an advent calenader

Each advent bag will have a small treat or prize in side. Consider candy or a special note for your child to allow screen time or dinner alone with mommy, a trip to the dollar store etc. In the spirit of the holiday you could write scripture for your child to look up and reflect on with a treat.

So what does a grim reaper carry? A scythe! Did you know a scythe is a sharp, curved blade used for mowing or reaping. Use a green (silver or black) handprint to create your very own DIY grim reaper Halloween art.

Halloween Handprint Craft Tips

Because some of the graphics will get covered by your toddler’s handprint, you have options for bringing forth things like the eyes and mouths.

In this set, we’ve given you guides where to place the eyes and mouth. Take a look at these options for how to make them pop!

  • Use Googly Eyes where the eyes go for a 3-D Pop (I personally like this set of wiggle eyes where there are googly eyes of different sizes and colors)
  • Print a second set of the Halloween handprint prints and allow your child to decorate the eyes and mouth. After the hand print dries, cut out the decorated eyes and mouth. Glue and lay on top of the dried handprint.
  • If creating an item with different colors, do this in two steps. For example, paint the palm one color and place on the printable sheet. Once dry, place the finger and apply to the printed sheet. This allows you to add multiple colors without the smudge.

When putting together this Halloween Arts & Crafts, use washable Tempera paint. Print on white cardstock for the best turn out.

DIY Halloween Stickers

To use the stickers, simply print them out on sticker paper and cut them out. Then let the kids get creative!

What do you do for the mother that has everything? I struggle with this every year. While flowers are always the go to, they are a temporary gift. If you are looking for a perfect mother’s day gift that is frozen in time, fingerprint art, footprint art and handprint art is a perfect idea. Mother’s day handprint crafts can be made at home or even in the classroom. In fact, we all can agree a baby handprint and toddler handprint are the most precious thing of all.

So let’s get started. Learn the best paint for making handprint art and then download and enjoy these adorable handprint mother’s day printable cards.

What kind of paint do you use for handprint art?

When making handprint art for mother’s day, it’s important to have the right paint. Especially if you want your product to last a long time. First you must answer the question, what medium is the handprint art going on. Once you have determined if you are using wood, paper, or canvas, you can then determine the paint source. You also want to use a non-toxic, organic paint as you are applying it to your child’s hand.

best paint for handprint art

The following paints can be used on the following sources…

Paper or Cardstock: A non-toxic washable tempera paint will easily stick to paper.

Canvas: Acrylic paint labelled non-toxic is safe to use.

Wood: Milk paint is made of natural ingredients making it the safest choice.

Drywall: Choose a non-toxic interior paint commonly found at Home Depot, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams.

It is important to wash hands (feet/fingers) immediately after the print is created.

Is there a trick to getting handprint art smudge-free?

Getting the perfect handprint can be a challenge. A few tricks to help a smaller child create a handprint without smudging. Follow these five tips when creating kids’ handprint art for mom.

Tip 1: Have the right paint. When using paper, the best paint for easy clean-up is a non-toxic washable tempera paint.

Tip 2: Use distraction. If you can get an adult or older kids to help you, distract the child while you go through the motions of painting their hand and applying it to the paper. If you do not have as second helper, use an electronic or television to quickly deter their eyes.

Tip 3: Give the handprint artwork a few test runs. Print out extra copies of the mother’s day cards and practice with your little hands.

Tip 4: Use a paintbrush to evenly paint on hand and footprints. Remove excess paint before applying the child’s hand to the printable or canvas.

Tip 5: Lay down the hand very slowly and carefully. Start with laying down the pinky and slowly rolling the hand down on the paper until you hit the thumb. Once all the fingers and palm are placed, press your finger tips above the child’s handprint to ensure no part of the child’s hand is not applied to the paper. When you are ready to lift the handprint off, do this in a reverse motion. Slowly peeling the paper back from the child’s hand.

Give yourself grace. Sometimes the most adorable children’s hand prints artwork is found is in the mistakes. Then years down the road, small smudge might remind the gift receiver of a once-upon-a-time wiggly toddler.

Put a spin on traditional gift-giving with this printable Christmas Gift Exchange Game! It’s more fun than simply wrapping up a gift and sticking someone’s name on it. With this game, you won’t know whose gift (or what’s inside it) that you could possibly end up with!

Christmas Gift Exchange Game

Christmas Gift Exchange Printable PDF - Christmas White Elephant Game Directions

This game is fun for giving gifts where the group of people are similar in age. Like with a sports team, boy/girl scouts, or during a classroom party. That way, everyone will be gifting items that all participants can enjoy.

Fun Christmas Gift Fact

Speaking of gift-giving, do you know why we give our family members and friends gifts at Christmas in the first place? According to Why Christmas?, gift-giving has become a holiday tradition because the Wise men brought gifts to Jesus at birth. He received gold, frankincense, and myrrh when He was born.

Though we give and receive very different presents today, it’s all because we want to remember that Jesus is the reason for the season…and that he was given gifts too.

Getting Ready for Christmas Gift Giving

To get started with this Christmas gift exchange game, everyone should agree on a date for the event. Make it a total evening of fun and laughs with finger foods and desserts, or go all out with a potluck dinner. Gifts are best given after a full belly!

You will also need a spending limit on the gifts you plan to exchange. You wouldn’t want to bring a $10 gift and go home with an item valued at $50! Setting a budget makes the game fair for everyone. Most people will probably be okay with a $25 budget.

Items you could give for this Christmas gift exchange include:

  • Comfy items (Blanket, slippers, cozy socks)
  • A basket full of treats
  • Gift cards to specific stores or restaurants
  • Cute coffee mug that would be meaningful to anyone playing

How to Play the Christmas Gift Exchange Game | Better than a Secret Santa

Playing the Christmas Gift Exchange Game

When it’s time to exchange your gifts, the real fun begins! Incorporate a fun holiday party game. Print the cards on cardstock paper so they will withstand the entire game – and for future years of use, if everyone enjoys playing.

Put the cards in a stack on a table and let everyone gather around with their gift in their hands. Take turns drawing cards and following the directions.

Example directions on the printable cards for this game include:

  • Swap gifts with the person to your left
  • Swap gifts with the tallest person in the room
  • Swap gifts with the oldest person playing
  • Swap gifts with the person whose birthday is next
  • Swap gifts with someone wearing a sweater

The more cards you turn over and follow, the more the gifts will get scrambled up around the room. Once everyone has drawn a card (or 2 cards, 3 cards….however long you want the gift exchange game to last), it’s time to OPEN the gifts!

This game is so fun, it’s easy for it to become one of your yearly Christmas traditions!
