Uses of Borax Powder for Kids | 15 Easy Borax Recipes

Did you know that before I became a full-time blogger, I was actually a 5th grade teacher? Surprise! Frugal Coupon Living was born while I was on maternity leave after I had my first child. Before I knew it, Frugal Coupon Living had totally taken off. It was amazing to see the success of my blog unfold, but it also meant that I never made it back into the classroom that I loved.

Even though I had moved onto blogging, my desire to teach never left me. I still miss it sometimes! While I can’t officially return to the classroom, I have kids now, and they basically have become my own personal classroom. With that being said, I am always on the hunt for engaging, cool kids’ science experiments for them to try. If you are anything like me, I am here to tell you that making science fun at home is easier than you think!

One ingredient is a constant in many that I’ve found over the years: borax! I had fun putting together these Borax Uses for Kids. Make crystals (geodes), flubber, slime, bouncy balls, and more. Borax slime has become super popular recently. I have a feeling that some of you have already gotten requests from your little ones to make borax slime at home! If you have yet to make borax slime with your kids, this is your sign to whip some up.

Read on for a quick and simple explanation of borax. Plus, 15 easy and cool kids’ science experiments including borax slime that you can do with your children in the simplest terms possible! Have fun cooking these cool kids’ science experiments up and enjoy!

What is borax, anyways?

Borax or sodium borate is a boron compound (a chemical element, atomic number 5). Typical Borax is a white substance made of colorless crystals that dissolve easily in water.

What are some uses of borax powder?

Borax is typically used in households as a cleaning product. It can be used for a wide variety of household messes, including as stain remover, all-purpose cleaning spray, and even as a weed killer! It has been a staple in frugal households for years, not just because of all of the uses of borax powder, but how cheap it is, too! Because of this, there’s a good chance that you already have some borax in your cleaning supplies cabinet, ready to be used for something a little more fun: science!

Borax is the unexpected secret ingredient to making kid-approved science concoctions like borax slime, borax crystals, and even borax bouncy balls! How neat is that? You and your kids will be amazed that a humble cleaning product can totally transform ordinary ingredients. Not only that, but the other ingredients needed to make these cool kids’ science experiments might already be lying around your house, too!

Borax Slime and Balls: What happened?

Glue has an ingredient called polyvinyl acetate, which is a liquid polymer. The borax links the polyvinyl acetate molecules to each other, creating one large, flexible polymer. In bouncy balls, adding the cornstarch helps to bind the molecules together so that they hold their shape better. Keep in mind, these homemade bouncing balls will lose their elasticity over time.

Borax Crystals: What happened?

A crystal is a natural solid made up of a repeated pattern of molecules connected together. Crystals can form through the slow cooling of a material. Molecules of hot water move apart, making room for the borax crystals to dissolve. When no more of the solution can be dissolved, you have reached saturation. As this solution cools, the water molecules move closer together again. Now there’s less room for the solution to hold onto as much of the dissolved borax. Crystals begin to form and build on one another as the water lets go of the excess and evaporates.

Ready to get started? Here are the best uses of borax powder I’ve uncovered to create cool kids’ science experiments! Prepare for all of the borax slime, flubber, and floam!

Homemade Lavender Linen Spray

I am loving my Essential Oils. One of my favorite and most calming scents is Lavender. I love to use this Lavender Linen Spray on my pillows daily to help me fall and stay asleep, I also spritz my girls pillows with it – I think it is a secret to sleepy time success!

To keep from having a damp pillow I spray it in the morning after making the bed, the water dries but the smell and the benefits will linger throughout the day. If you want a stronger scent mist lightly an hour or so before bedtime. You can also use it on couches, curtains, and rugs to put the relaxing scent throughout your home. This spray can also be used when ironing your linens to give them a light scent as well, spritz lightly or pour right into water well of your iron.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. distilled water
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • spray bottle

Directions:

  1. Combine oil and distilled water in spray bottle, shake well to combine.

To Use:

  1. Shake well first then lightly mist pillows or blankets.

For anxious pets you can spray their beds or bedding, spritz the car interior for road trips, include a bottle in a basket with other items for a housewarming present (or for a new mother).

April Fool’s Day Teacher Printable

Thanks to you, I’m no fool! Happy April Fool’s Day!

April Fool’s Day Teacher Gift Tag + Digital Downloads
Do you remember the teacher that really impacted your life? I had a lot of great teachers growing up. Perhaps that is why I went into education, myself, in college.  One of the teachers that really made a difference was Mrs. Cassels. She taught me Art History and even took me to Europe for a month were we toured museums, cathedrals, ancient ruins and more.  Years later, I moved to Washington, D.C. and was able to wow my kids through the Smithsonian Art Museum where I shared my love of painting and sculptures with my kids – they were quite impressed with my knowledge and I was honestly impressed with all I had not forgotten!

April Fool’s Day Teacher Printable

On a regular basis, I try to show my kids’ teachers love. Usually it is through singing up for a thankful Thursday and sending in a candy bar or coffee. Other times it is during a holiday season and attaching a cute printable to a small gift. That was our intention with this freebie. Print your free No Fool gift tag and pair with caramel popcorn, cookies, an apple, or whatever you desire! Maybe a coffee will go far too – who doesn’t love caffeine?

I’m No Fool Supplies:

These are the supplies we used for our gifts, you can of course adapt to your own needs!

  • Red polka dot ribbon
  • Red and white twine
  • Apples
  • Cellophane goodie bags
  • Caramel popcorn
  • Mason jar
  • Chocolate chip cookies
  • No Fool Printable

You will also need material to print your gift tag. Use white card stock or send online to Staples to pick up. (see below.)

I’m No Fool Directions:

Have fun with this free teacher printable gift tag. Your directions will differ from ours based on how you use the printable, but this is how we created our gifts.

We baked cookies according to package directions. Once they cooled we added them to clear cellophane bags and tied them off with red and white twine. We cut our gift tags out and whole punched them on the right side. We tied the bag to the twine with a bow.

We had some mason jars and added some tasty caramel popcorn to the inside. You can make your own or pick up a store bought brand – have you tried POPT! Caramel Buttery Popcorn?  Once your mason jar is full, screw on the lid and tie on a red polka dot bow. Add your gift tag before gifting.

Another great idea is a classic apple – an apple a day keeps the doctor away!  If you feel like an apple is too cliche, step it up by gifting a caramel or candy apple! Wrap in a clear cellophane bag and tie with a red and white polka dot bow. Don’t forget to add your no fool April Fool’s Day gift tag!

We have two versions of tags. One that says Happy Fool’s Day and one that does not.

Thirteen clean and fun Dollar Tree April Fools pranks from as low as $20 – Easy April Fools Day prank ideas for kids from the Dollar Store.

Dollar Tree April Fools Pranks

13 Dollar Tree April Fools Pranks

Every April 1, April Fools’ Day is an annual celebration full of practical jokes. These jokes can have a wide range of silliness form hoaxes to playful amusement. We like to focus on the later, making sure all parties of the prank find it fun and laughable. In an effort to prepare for April Fools’ Day this year, my girls and I went up and down the aisles of the Dollar Store to find some of the most creative (and clean) Dollar Tree April Fools Pranks for Kids. This pranks can be done on kids or the kids can become involved pranking parents or even other siblings.

Also check out our April Fools Ideas for the Kitchen, Home and Office. We also have plenty of fun Free April Fools Day printables for kids and adults. Have fun, be kind!

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 1: Sponge Cakes

Only two items are needed for this April Fool’s Day Prank for the kids. We tricked my husband as his birthday had just occurred when we made our sponge cake. At the Dollar Tree pick up a sponge and we found a package of Funfetti Pillsbury Icing with sprinkles. The trickiest part was not having the sponge show through. I would suggest the lightest sponge you can find (ours was dark blue.) I also suggest icing the cube, freezing it for about five minutes, icing it again, freezing again. My daughter was very patient with it, it was about four times she took it in and out of the freezer until it looked like a mini cake. Supplies include a sponge, icing, sprinkles, scissors and a butter knife.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 2: Plastic Wrap Shampoo

This is good for a container of bath wash, shampoo or conditioner. Take some plastic wrap and seal under the cap. When your family member tries to squeeze the liquid out of the bottle, it will not come out. This might be an April Fools prank you already have on hand and don’t have to purchase! Supplies include plastic wrap, and shampoo/conditioner/body wash.

Price: $2 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 3: Kraft Mac and Cheese Juice

For this kids April Fool’s Day Prank you will need powdered Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.  My frugal self pulled out the pasta and made it for the kids later in the week – who doesn’t love pasta with butter? It was easy to make our April Fool’s Day juice. I was amazed how real this looked. When I poured the powder in our pitcher, I was sure that it wasn’t going to fool anyone but it looked just like freshly squeezed orange juice with pulp. You can sift out some of the top if you feel it looks like too much pulp. Gross… but so much fun! Supplies include powdered mac and cheese, water, and a pitcher.

Price: $1

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 4: Pop Corn

We picked up a popcorn container and a can of corn for this April Fools Day fun! After you ask the kids if they want popcorn, pour a can of corn in the cup and see their reaction! Silly but fun. Supplies include a popcorn container, a can opener and canned corn.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 5: Brown Es Brownies

Construction paper, a pan and Reynolds Aluminum Foil are all that is needed for this Brown-Es April Fool’s Day brownie prank!  I took brown construction paper and layered it on top of each other. I then drew an E on the top piece of paper with a pencil. I quickly cut out six Es in one cut. On the top of the pan, my girls wrote a note to their dad – “Brownies, Love Lucy and Bella.” He fell for it after dinner! Laughs from all of us! Supplies include brown construction paper, scissors, a baking tray, aluminum foil and a pencil.

Price: $1 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 6: JELL-O Punch

Full disclosure. Our Dollar Tree did not have powdered JELL-O so we had to grab four of the pre-made individual packs. Four filled up this entire mason jar cup To fill the cup, we melted on the stove-top until it was runny (no chunks).  We pour our melted JELL-O in a mug, added a draw and put it in the fridge. It solidified just fine. After the pranks pilled up, my husband did not fall for this one but he also is not the first to grab a mug of juice out of the refrigerator.  This is a better prank saved for the kids! Supplies include JELL-O (plus ingredients), a mug, and a straw.

Price: $1 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 7: Frozen Cereal

There are a few option to this cereal prank. You can freeze a layer of ice in a bowl or you can freeze the milk, spoon and cereal in the bowl.  We added a layer of water to the bowl about 2/3 up. We then frozen the layer of water. When I served the cereal and milk, just a litter was on the top layer so when you went to dig your spoon in the bowl, you hit a solid surface! Supplies include a cereal bowl, spoon, milk, cereal and water. You might have everything you need for this April Fool’s Day breakfast prank making this as low as $0!

Price: $1 – $4

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 8: Thin Mint OREOs

The kids loved making these Thin Mint OREOs and I have to admit, they smelled so good! The prank level of how hard it was, was low, but you have to make sure you keep it clean. Otherwise it clearly is not an OREO. I also think it would work better with one of those peel back OREO containers. Using a small bag, we had to open the bag and it doesn’t make it too appealing to start eating OREOs from an already open bag. If it was the peel back container, it would be easy to lay them in the cupboard until someone went in the pantry and served themselves. Supplies include cookies, toothpaste and a butter knife.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 9: Rock Filled Shoes

So don’t do this prank when you are rushing out the door. No fun having a child clean up rocks and getting their shoes on ten minutes before school starts. Supplies include shoes with rocks, Pony Beads, marbles, toilet paper, or whatever!

Price: $1

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 10: Caramel Ice Cream Parfait

I love this Dollar Tree prank because you can make a practical joke serving ice cream with caramel sauce but it isn’t something that you have to toss after the prank is done. In fact, my kids were thrilled to be eating the mashed potatoes with gravy! It was just as much of a treat. All you need for supplies are instant mash (the ingredients like butter and water) and gravy sauce. We picked up the spoon and glass at The Dollar Tree but they were not needed because you can use your own utensils and parfait glass.

Price: $2 – $4

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 11: Spider Escape

This prank is playful and easy. Grab a paper cup and put on this caution note “Warning… huge, aggressive spider under cup. Do not lift!” Then tear the cup as if this aggressive spider escaped. Fun not only for the home but maybe for a common room in an office. If not for someone to fall for, at least for someone to get a small chuckle. Supplies include a cup, marker, and Post-it note.

Price: $1 – $3

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 12: Remote Control Trick

Dad is sure to fall for this one, especially when the big game is on. Cover the remote control sensor with Scotch Tape. Be sure to draw a black circle where the sensor is completely blocking the transmission. How many times do you think he will change the batteries? Supplies include tape, a permanent marker and of course, a remote control.

Price: $2

Dollar Tree April Fools Prank 13: Bar Soap Trick

For this soap prank, you cover bar soap in clear nail polish. When you go to wash your hands, the soap will not create suds causing the hand washer to keep trying to later up the bar. This worked in our home! Supplies include bar soap and clear nail polish.

Price: $2

Printable Fleece Navidad Gift Tag – pair with an adorable fleece blanket. This makes an adorable Christmas teacher gift idea. We have also gifted to our neighbors, Sunday school teachers, and more!

Fleece Navidad Gift Tag Printable Set

Printable Fleece Navidad Gift Tag

I have to laugh a little at this post friends. I am home on bed rest (expecting twins soon) and I have so many projects I want to get up on the blog for you to enjoy. This project has been one of them. My bed rest has limited my creativity on the blog in terms of food crafts and Christmas crafts. First, it has taken me about two weeks to get this post done (normally it is a few hours.) I had the Fleece Navidad Gift Tags sitting at the copy center for a few weeks before I could convince someone in my family to go get them. I had to special order ribbon and wait, no only that that arrive, but someone to get the box from downstairs upstairs to me.

When prepping this post, the mess that was around me was amazing. I was laughing at my creativity in hiding the clutter. The basket I used for my “staging” is used to hold cat toys/food. The white background are my bed sheets and I quickly sat on the floor to get a few additional shots. It just shows the power of photography and some photo shop skills!

Free Printable Fleece Navidad Gift Tag

Moving along, you too can create this Fleece Navidad Gift. I picked up a Kohl’s Fleece Throw Blanket for $5 from $30. The fleece blankets were mailed to my house so I did not have to go to the store to pick them up.  This low price does come every holiday season, normally around Black Friday. However, fleece throws can easily be found for “cheap.”

The Kohl’s blankets are by far my favorite of all the ones I have purchased! They are incredibly soft, huge and come at a really affordable price.

Shop Kohl’s Supersoft Fleece Plush Throw Blankets

I sent the gift tags to a Staples Copy Center and my mother in law picked them up so I could finish off these cute gifts. We have four blankets all set for our school teachers and Sunday school leaders!

Print Your Fleece Navidad Gift Tags

You can print off your Printable Fleece Navidad Gift Tag. The PDF have two different sizes.  One that is about 7 inches (two tags on a page) and one page that is about 4 inches (four tags on a page.) Use whichever you prefer. For me to print two pages off at Staples was about $2. My images have the smaller gift tags though the longer tags would be just as cute!

“Fleece” Navidad. We want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of our hearts.

Gift Idea! Consider jazzing up your gift a bit!  Pair this creative blanket idea with popcorn, a box of hot chocolate, marshmallows and perhaps a Redbox gift card! We have adorable Redbox Gift Card printables!   We made them for a “pop-ular” teacher but you can get creative with the gift. You buy the gift code, we supply the cute note!

Don’t forget you can take this idea to the next level with a no sew fleece blanket tutorial. We have made multiple of these and they really are easy. One idea we did was purchasing a discounted Photo Fleece Blanket. We then tied it off as an adorable gift for grandparents!

Thankful for the Hands that Teach Me Teacher Gift Tag

We have a sweet and thoughtful gift idea for you this fall season.  As a former teacher, I am always looking for ideas and ways to show appreciation to my children’s teachers. I have five kids, so grabbing expensive gifts is not always the solution. I have sent in $5 Starbucks gift cards (with printable), candy bars (that I picked up in the checkout lane of the grocery store), Redbox codes (also a printable) or even a small batch of the larger batch of cookies we made the evening before. Whatever the gift, small or big, it shows that I appreciate my child’s teacher and also represents a lot to the younger eyes that are watching.

This season we wanted to give you a fall gift tag you can use for your child and their teacher. Print your gift tag and attach it to a seasonal soap dispenser. Today we used some of method’s limited edition soaps because they added the perfect color to the season. Enjoy!

You can save these and print from your own computer or we give you step by step directions to save and print at Staples Copy Center.

Supplies:

  • Method hand soap or a soap of your choice (often Bath and Body Works has seasonal sales)
  • Ribbon, twine, or other decor
  • Cardstock
  • Printer ink

I like to order my prints at Staples. It saves on ink and is only a few short miles from my home. I pick-up at the store, but of course you can upload them online and then have them shipped to your home.

Ready for a thoughtful punny gift? We are back with this adorable Stuck with You Teacher Appreciation Printable. Pair with Scotch Expressions Ruler Design Masking Tape and gift for a teacher.

Stuck With You Teacher Gift Tag Pritnable Set

Stuck with You Teacher Appreciation Printable

While in the store the other day, we came across the cutest ruler design masking tape from Scotch Expressions. Though I had no reason for celebration, I had to pick it up for my girls’  teachers. I also wanted to pair a gift tag with some pun – I am glad I am stuck with you!  As you know from my previous posts, I am a former teacher and always looking to show my kid’s teachers affirmations and thanks.

Always find a reason – Thankful Thursday

We made this as a Thankful Thursday gift. Just a creative way to show a teacher how much she is appreciation for no reason. It would also be cute as a Punny Teacher Gift Idea.

If you don’t have this masking tape, think of another item to pair with the gift tag. Glue, clear tape, candy, whatever is sticky and fun!

Stuck with You Supplies:

Your supplies are really optional, but these are the things we used for this Teacher Appreciation Gift.

  • Turquoise tulle
  • Turquoise curling ribbon
  • Scotch Expressions ruler design masking tape
  • Stuck on you printable

You will also need a resource to print this. We suggest sending the order to Staples and printing on card stock. More on that below.

Stuck with You Directions:

Some of these directions are based up my own resources. Your directions will vary based on the supplies you use to make your teacher gift.

Take your Stuck with You printable. Cut out the gift tag and punch or cut a hole in the top of the tag.

Cut about four inches of curling ribbon.

Next, string your ribbon through the Scotch brand tape and the gift tag. Tie a knot and curl with scissors.

Cut off some tulle. We used about three inches. Tie around the curling ribbon and make a cute accent to your bow.

Finally, have your child sign their name and gift to a teacher.

Enjoy.
