Don’t toss that Christmas holiday candy. Save it for this Love Shack Valentine Gingerbread House. Adorable ideas to create the most adorable February food craft for kids!

Love Shack Valentine Gingerbread House

Love shack, baby love shack!

Don’t toss that Christmas Gingerbread House Kit! Whether you are headin’ down the Atlanta highway or nesting in the coziness of your own home, we have the most adorable DIY Valentine Gingerbread House. We were inspired by Wilton’s Valentine Gingerbread House.

If it’s the end of Christmas, don’t toss that Gingerbread kit. I have done that. December 25th rolled around, we never made our gingerbread house and my first though was “this won’t make it until next year!” Well the truth is, it will. It will make it to February of next year with the creation of a Love Shack Gingerbread House for Valentine’s Day.

Valentine Gingerbread House Ingredients

A few ingredients make this Valentine Gingerbread House Kit complete. Your candy ingredients can vary, but we listed what we used.

  • Graham crackers
  • Vanilla frosting
  • Gummy hearts
  • Valentine M&M’s
  • Valentine heart sprinkles
  • Valentine nonpareil sprinkles
  • Mini Starburst Reds
  • Conversation Hearts

You will also need:

  • Decorating bags
  • Small star decorating tip
  • 8” round cake platter or plate
  • Spatula
  • Plastic knife

Save this recipe for later. Print your recipe and add it to your recipe box or recipe binder! This is my favorite Recipe Binder – I get tired of printing the same recipe over and over. A binder keeps me organized and gives me a place to store my recipes.

Valentine Love Shack Recipe Directions

These recipe directions can be adapted to your own style. We are sharing how we decorated our Gingerbread Home, but style to your own taste.

First, lightly frost the cake platter with a spatula.

Break three graham crackers in half width wise.

Next, fill a decorating bag halfway with frosting and another one half way but with a star tip in the end of the bag.

Frost the two longer sides and the bottom of the four graham cracker pieces and stick them to the frosted cake platter in the shape of a house.

Then frost the other two graham cracker squares on the two longer sides and stick them on top of the house for the roof.

Carefully cut two triangles with a plastic knife to fit inside the front and back of the roof.

Frost the three triangles sides and stick them onto the frost and back of the roof.

Use the star decorating tip to make a ruffled border on all the edges and top with sprinkles.

If you want, this is a good time to set your house in the refrigerator.

When then decorated our house. You can follow our steps.

Use the frosting to stick a heart gummy to the front and back of the love shack.

Use the mini Starburst to make a path to the love shack by sticking them to the cake platter.

Frost your roof and tile it using the mini Starburst.

Fill in the triangles with frosting and coat with candy heart sprinkles.

Finally, use M&M’s for decorating the edges of the house.

Tips for Decorating your Gingerbread House

The easiest way is to make sure you allow enough time for the icing to set up on the graham cracker until hardened so your structure is sturdy before you start decorating with the candy pieces. It is important to follow the directions in the steps laid out above.

Also, if you decide to bake your own gingerbread house pieces, make sure you bake them on parchment paper. And mix up a royal icing recipe to use as the walls and roof will be heavier.

Another great tip! If you decide to bake your own walls and roof pieces, you can choose lighter colored walls by using light corn syrup and light brown sugar, or darker walls by using darker corn syrup and dark brown sugar.

FAQs

Are you supposed to eat a gingerbread house after you build it?

Definitely! That’s part of the fun. Knowing you can dig into the house all at once or enjoy a few pieces over time until the gingerbread house candy is gone. You can even start in on the gingerbread houses walls and eat those as well. These sweet treats are made to be consumed and contain only edible materials.

What do gingerbread houses symbolize?

Typically, they symbolize the Christmas holiday. Ginger was first used in making ginger snap cookies and these cookies began as a tool for artistic talent and creativity. They were decorated with icing and eventually candy. Over time the gingerbread house tradition was born. Thus, making the house something not only artistic and fun, but also delicious to eat.

Is a gingerbread house religious?

Today not so much. It is associated with the religious Christmas holiday and is used in holiday decor but is not necessarily a religious practice. In the early days of using gingerbread, it was used in religious ceremonies because it was a hardy, firm cookie. Over time it has changed and nowadays, it is quite normal to create gingerbread houses for all types of non-religious holidays. Valentine’s day houses and Halloween houses are also being created.

What is National Gingerbread House Day?

It is a holiday celebrated yearly on the 12th of December. This celebration is two-fold: because gingerbread houses go hand-in-hand with the winter months and because it is the best time of year to enjoy gingerbread house festivals, competitions, the Christmas Holiday and special family time.

Leap Day Activities: Make Leap Year Special For Your Kids and preschool-aged children. Create memorable crafts, activities and ideas.

leap-year-ideas-collage-frugal-coupon-living

For some people, Leap Day just means another day in the office, another day of the kids in school, and nothing too out of the ordinary. But it is out of the ordinary (of a typical year, that is)! You have a whole extra day to have fun, do something you normally don’t do, and come on, who doesn’t love another reason to celebrate?!

Leap Year Ideas

For leap year, we suggest you get froggy and hop on these fun activities, make it an opposites day of sorts by having dessert first, create some fun art projects from this full list of ideas and enjoy this day, it won’t happen for another four years! Here are 5 ways to make Leap Day special for your kids.

This is a day that comes once every four years, so why not turn it into a memorable day – create fun with your kids so they look back and remember that day mom was silly and talked about frogs! It’s a special day, so make it special by doing things you don’t normally do. Having a fun day at home with mom, dad, or both of you, will leave a memorable impact on your kids.

Do something you’ve been wanting to do for a while –

It doesn’t have to be anything big, no need to plan a trip to Disney World; but think of something your family has been wanting to do but hasn’t had a chance yet. Maybe go to the zoo. See a 3D movie in the theater while everyone else is at school and work. Go on a scavenger hunt.

Go out to eat and order dessert first –

When was the last time you let your kids have dessert first? Ever? That’s the fun of Leap Day! Live a little! Grab lunch out and let the kids have a sweet treat before their meal. It’s a day that comes around only once every four years, having dessert first should be okay that often.

Make a time capsule –

A lot can change over the course of four years. With kids – think of how much they’ll grow and their personalities will continue to evolve. So use this special day as a way to memorialize your family in this moment with a Time Capsule for Kids. Fill out fun little surveys about your kids favorite color, movie, toy, what they like to do, what they hope happens before the next leap year, etc. Get the kids to draw pictures to put in the time capsule. Be sure to take a picture of everyone or better yet, make a little home movie. Put the pictures, all the papers, a thumb drive with the family movie, and anything else you can in your capsule, and seal it up until the next Leap Day!

Introduce your kids to Leap Day with a little help from Pinterest –

Actually, it’s help coming from bloggers out there that are all celebrating Leap Day as well – Pinterest is just a great way to find the stuff! By searching for leap day activities, you’ll find everything from stories and poems explaining what Leap Day / Year is, games to play, activities to do, printable coloring and activity pages, and plenty of frog themed Leap Day games!

Elf on the Shelf Skittles Rainbow Experiment

For this Elf on the Shelf activity, the kids participate in a Skittles Rainbow Experiment. New creative, funny, and original Elf on the Shelf Ideas daily.

Elf on the Shelf Ideas

We are back, so is the Elf on the Shelf! You can view our Elf on the Shelf Master List for a full list of ideas including every idea we have ever done.

Is there a Rainbow Elf?

If you are on the hunt for a rainbow Elf on the Shelf doll only, I have terrible news… there isn’t a rainbow Elf. As a reminder, Elf dolls only come in red and white. There are knock off versions in different colors, but the classic doll has a red hat and white collar.

However, if tasting the rainbow is fun for you, take a look at this cool Skittles Elf on the Shelf rainbow experiment.

Skittles Rainbow Experiment

Have you seen our five minute science experiments for kids? There are many ideas you can incorporate into your December Elf on the Shelf ideas. We did not pull this activity from that list, but we have a Skittles Rainbow Experiment your kids will love to do with their red elves.

Skittles Rainbow Experiment

Ashley…. so…

How do you do the Skittles trick?

Don’t worry. I have the answers. First gather these supplies you likely have at home.

Skittles Rainbow Supplies

  • The Elf on the Shelf doll
  • Skittles package
  • 1/4 Cup Warm Water
  • White plate (white shows the background)

Skittles Rainbow Experiment Directions

Elf can leave these written directions, though we will provide you with more detailed directions below.

“Let’s make a rainbow. Just add warm water.”

First, arrange your Skittles in a circular pattern around the edge of the plate. One skittle, side by side, until your skittles form a circle radius of the plate. (You can do this for your kids/Elf or you can just layout a box of Skittles for your kid to do when they wake.)

When your skittles are in place, pour over enough warm water to cover all the Skittles and the plate itself.

Watch and wait as a Skittles rainbow appears. You will watch the colors bleed toward the center/middle of the plate.

Now that you know how to do the Elf on the Shelf skittles experiment, let’s explain!

Skittles Rainbow Explanation

Skittle candy is full of dye. The combination of dye and sugar dissolves quickly in warm water. When placed in a shallow plate of warm water, the dye quickly dissolves in the water making a colorful rainbow. The reason the colors do not mix naturally (unless stirred, shaken, or sit awhile) is because each food color has the same amount of sugar dissolved from each Skittle. As the sugar dissolved, it pushed outwards into the color beside it building almost a wall against the neighboring solution

What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Bear Hug Valentines: This easy Teddy Grahams Valentine Conversation Heart Cookies require only three ingredients. If you want these to be your valentines, we also included free printable bear hug gift tags. Enjoy!

Teddy Grahams Valentines

You guys. I have a confession. I am not really a Pinterest mom. I am just a creative mastermind behind the moms who really are Pinterest moms. I come up with some really creative ideas but I never implement them. I hate mess and most Pinterest crafts and recipes lead to messes. This. This, however, is something I will implement. It is so easy and takes two seconds. I also can hand all the supplies to my oldest kids and say, “have at it!” And then I feel like a winner because they feel like America’s Next Top Chef. We both win.

Teddy Grahams Valentines

These Teddy Grahams Valentines are easy. So easy, they have only two ingredients – if you even call them ingredients. I say they are ingredients because that whole America’s Next Top Chef thing.

Teddy Graham Valentines Ingredients

… and the secret ingredient is Teddy Grahams! {Bet you had no idea!} Really the ingredients include three things.

  • Teddy Grahams
  • Conversation Hearts
  • Vanilla icing

You will also need:

  • Decorating bag
  • Parchment paper

Save this recipe for later. Print your recipe and add it to your recipe box or recipe binder! This is my favorite Recipe Binder – I get tired of printing the same recipe over and over. A binder keeps me organized and gives me a place to store my recipes.
