Looking for a silly idea that can actually celebrate different cultures around the world. Have Scout elf shine your child’s shoe with tin foil. Extend the idea by bringing in the German shoe tradition for Christmas.

Elf on the Shelf Shoe Idea

In your home, gather the following supplies to put together this fun Shoe Shined Elf on the Shelf idea.

Supplies

  • The Elf on the Shelf Doll
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Shoes
  • Cardstock or paper (this is the best cardstock which is perfect for your Elf printables)
  • Markers

Instructions

This idea is quick and easy and if your children still understand what “Shoe shine” means then they will love the humor in this Elf idea.

For this funny Elf prank, take your child’s shoe and wrap each in tin foil.

Take your marker and write a message on a piece of paper or cardstock “I shined your shoes for you.”

Of course, don’t do this with their school shoes. Imagine the embarrassment wearing aluminum foil shoes to school – haha! You could do something silly and wrap dads and then dad can act like he wore them all day at work (have him leave the house and return home – he can carry a different set of shoes for the day!)

Looking for more Elf ideas with shoes? Did you know that shoes are actually apart of a German Christmas tradition? Learn how you can extend this idea with a fun Christmas idea celebrating other cultures.

What is the German Christmas Tradition with Shoes?

german christmas tradition shoe elf on the shelf

The German holiday, St. Nicholas Day, falls on December 5. On this day, children clean and polish their shoes and leave them by the front door before going to sleep. The next day their shoes are filled with fruit, candy, nuts and small gifts from St. Nick.

If this is a German shoe Elf on the Shelf idea you would like to do, do this idea on December 5th or really any day in December to recognize Christmas traditions around the world. Just remind your kids it’s Saint Nicolas Day!

Daily Routine

To Help Your Pet

Another reason is so that you can be sure that your pet is being taken care of exactly the way you want them to be. Be specific about your fur baby’s likes, ticks, allergies, bad habits and more.

You Can Worry Less

How much is a pet sitter?

how much is a pet sitter

Before you hire a pet sitter, it’s important to know what’s a head. Many budget for travel but forget that sometimes the cost of the entire trip is at home – with your pet and pet sitter.

Pet sitter rates will vary greatly depending on your pets needs, the age/skillset of the animal sitter, the the frequency of visits to the home. The cost of a pet sitter can be as low as $0 to $100 for a day/night. That’s a huge discrepancies especially when you are gone for more than many days. A few questions to ask a homeowner…

  • Can you you trade services with a friend?
  • Are you comfortable hiring a local teenager?
  • Do you need a qualified independent contractor to stay the night or entire duration of your trip?

Consider these guidelines a price estimate when budgeting for a pet sitter. They are ordered from least expensive to most expensive.

Neighbor or Friend

If you are able to trade pet sitting services with a neighbor or friend? If you can trade pet sitting services, this might benefit bot you and a friend. In this case, you might get away with getting a pet sitter for free.  Consider bringing back a nice gift from your travels or paying for house keeping services after you pick up your pet from their home.

Teenager

Ask the teenage kids of neighbors. You can often hire a teenager for minimum wage. There is no need for transportation and they can easily access your house multiple times a day. Teens are always looking for extra income and you also know their parent is available in a “worst-case scenario” type situation.  If you don’t know the teens in your neighborhood, try a community forum like Nextdoor.com.

College Student

Trusted college kids are excellent for house sitting and pet sitting. To get out of the dorm for the weekend might be a weekend reprieve and not only are they helping with the pet, they can also look over the house. Plus they often come with a mode of transportation.

Veterinary Office

A vet office is a safe place to leave your pet. In addition to having a warm bed and roof over their head, you can feel comfortable knowing that your pet also has a pet doctor on hand in the event of any personal emergency or mishap. While this is a very safe route for pet sitting, your cat/dog will not have the comfort of their own home and exercise will be minimal as they will be in a vet’s office kennel/cage.

Pet Caregivers & Services

The most expensive route will be hiring a pet sitter service. In this scenario a qualified person often comes with a background check, screenings so home owners can feel comfortable with a stranger in your home. There often is a pet sitting contract so you know your rights when hiring a pet sitter or dog walker. You can find such services by searching pet sitting services near me or visit Care.com for help in your local area.

What do you put on pet sitting instructions?

In order to make it easy, have have included everything you need to put on Pet Instructions.

How Santa’s Elves Work

Santa’s elves are quite busy and often have a lot of work. Not only are they working for Santa during the Christmas season but there is plenty that goes on during the off seasons too.

Where do elves live?

It’s important to know that elves live in the North Pole with Santa Clause. They are there year around with the occasion beach vacation. During the Christmas holiday season, typically between Thanksgiving and Christmas morning, they travel around the world visiting families.

What do elves do for Santa?

Elves wear many hats and have many different jobs. The two main roles of elves are to help Santa make toys for Christmas presents. Also, many elf’s jobs are visit families during the Christmas season.

There are two types of elves. Christmas elves that visit families and elves that work in Santa’s workshop. Their role is different and it doesn’t mean their jobs can’t overlap. In fact, a family elf might work in the toy workshop during the off season. In addition, a workshop Elf can also visit families during the holiday season.

Additional rolls might include kitchen help, care of the reindeer department, elf clothing maker, santa’s sleigh repair department and more.

What is your elf job during the holiday season?

During the Christmas season, an elf’s job is to watch for naughty and nice behavior. Elves act as a liaison for Santa Claus and report nightly to the jolly ole fellow good and bad behavior. Santa uses the help of elves to create his nice list.

What do elves look like?

Did you know that not all elves look alike! Elves can come in many different colors and shapes. Just like people. The most common elf is known for it’s red body, broad face and red pointy hat. These elves often visiting homes. Other elves can be green, blue or even black. Elves typically have a little round belly and pointy ears. They can wear stripped socks. The head elf has yellow tights, a white peter pan collar on his green jacket, and a yellow accent on his green hat. He has been known to be spotted in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas Movie.

Elf on the Shelf Bad Santa Grinch Idea

Let’s have a  bit of fun putting Grinch on a bench. Today we are putting together some fun Elf on the Shelf Grinch ideas and including a free printable bad Santa Grinch. This allows you to use any of your favorite Grinch ideas for the holidays and pair it along side your Elf on a Shelf during Christmas time.

What is Grinch on a Bench?

Etsy Grinch on a Bench Elf Doll

First, a Grinch is a naughty green monster often seen during the Christmas season. The Grinch is the bah-humbug or Ebenezer Scrooge of Christmas spirit. Inspired by the Grinch fictional character created by Dr. Seuss in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, you can now purchase a Grinch on a Bench. This blends two things – Elf on the Shelf and Grinch. This is not part of the Scout Elf on the Shelf brand and (quite honestly) I would imagine this Grinch doll will not last long as it looks very similar to our beloved Santa’s Scout Elves.

If naughty and the word Christmas are combined, then you have a green monster. The Grinch is a Christmas icon and the representation of all all things naughty during the Christmas season. We found some of the best Elf on the Shelf ideas with the Grinch.

Do you have older kids? Turn your Elf on a Shelf into a bunch of bones. For this terrible Elf idea, use ketchup and roast chicken bones to make a perfect elf-shaped skeleton. This elf formation of a skeleton would be a bad parent idea for any younger kids as it would send a wrong message. However, it makes a nice joke for older kids who might enjoy a little bit of humor when it comes to Santa’s little helper. (Source)

When all is said and done, make sure you add the Grinch’s name on the naughty list.

It’s time for Grinch on a Bench – Time out for these Grinches! After any of these ideas, make sure you add Grinch to the naughty list in this fun printable. You can add Elf to the nice list for tackling that negative behavior.

Where can I buy a Grinch?

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter

  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (chocolate chunks will work too)

  • Bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixer or spoon
  • Scoop
  • Baking sheet(s)
  • Parchment paper

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F
  2. Sift together 2 3/4 cups flour, a tsp baking soda powder, & 1 tsp sodium salt into a mixing bowl.
  3. Cream butter with 2 large eggs, packed brown sugar, white sugar and 2 tsps vanilla extract until fluffy.

This delicious recipe batch yields about 30 of the best chocolate chip cookies. Store inside an airtight container to keep fresh and hold a yummy taste.

Can I make these chocolate chip cookies ahead?

Yes, this chewy chocolate chip cookies recipe is actually best if made ahead. That doesn’t mean you can’t whip up the recipe and immediately put the mixture in the oven. However, if you can let your mixed cookie dough chill for up to two hours before baking, your cookies will come out nice and fluffy texture. Chilling chocolate chip cookie dough solidifies the fat in the cookies. When baked, it actually prevents spread on a baking pan as the fat in chilled cookie dough takes longer to melt than room temperature fat.

How can I do with these chocolate chip cookies?

Are you afraid these cookies will go to waste? I mean, in our home, there is no such thing as wasted baked desserts. However, if this is not something your family would enjoy more than one bite, take a look at these ideas for your non-necessary cookies.

  • Thankful Thursday for Teachers
