Fun Family Bonding Activities checklist

Family time is important for everyone in the family. Planning relationship building activities make for fun memories that you’ll cherish for years. This family bonding activities printable provides year-round ideas of fun things to do together to make great memories together.

Why Family Time?

Whether it’s the bonding time spent with siblings, parents, children or even pets; spending time with family can provide a sense of security and love that cannot be found outside of the people you love the most. In addition, memories are created when something unusual occurs. That means getting out of the same daily routine and adding a new activity to your day!

Fun family activities can overlap with Family Traditions and they can be repeated or you can do them once and never do them again. For example, every Sunday family dinner is breakfast for us. This began as a family activity and quickly grew into a family tradition.

When creating a list of seasonal family activities, consider what your family would enjoy. If you have a larger family (like my family of seven) we have activities on the list that each child/adult would like. Of course, not each activity is appreciated by everyone but we all participate.

Family Bonding Ideas

We all know we should spend more time with our families but sometimes we struggle to come up with activities that don’t end in a shouting match. Making time to build your family bond can often be pushed aside. With that being said, here are some simple family bonding activities that you can do with your family this weekend!

1. Indoor Ice Skating: This fun activity for families on a budget is great for any time of year. Lace up and have fun trying to stay upright or learning how to do new tricks. If you don’t have ice skates, try out skates or even roller blades!

2. Cook Together: Cooking with kids can sometimes be difficult because they always want to play with the food but not eat any of it. Pick a recipe that everyone will enjoy and prep together if possible. Bonus points for trying new foods.

3. DIY Crafts: When was the last time you went to your local craft store? Take advantage of great deals and create something together. Your family will love the memories you create together while coming up with new ideas for future projects.

4. Mini-Golfing: It’s never too late or too early to start playing the game everyone loves. Mini-golf is a great family bonding activity that will leave you with laughs and smiles for years to come.

5. Go For A Hike: It doesn’t matter where you go for your hike as long as it’s somewhere new, exciting and challenging. Pack some snacks, water and good hiking shoes and get out of the house. Bonus: Involve your dog and make it a family adventure!

6. Board Games: Get some old school board games like Monopoly, Pictionary, Life or even Chess and challenge each other to friendly battles of minds. As long as everyone remembers that it’s just a game, you’ll have fun while making memories with a family game night.

7. Family Movie Night: One of the cheapest ways to have fun with the family is to spend a few hours at home watching a movie. Pick a movie everyone will enjoy and get some popcorn too! If your brave, make it a backyard movie night.

8. Yard Games: Whether you call them yard games or lawn games, playing sports in your backyard can be a ton of fun for the whole family. Bring out the badminton set or play a game of football to get some fresh air and burn off some energy.

9. Go on a Scavenger Hunt: We have a huge list of scavenger hunt ideas for at home. From outdoor hunts in the neighborhood, to birthday treasure hunts, and finally seasonal hunts with fun rhyming riddle clues, these hunt are great idea for each new holiday. This might quickly become a family tradition.

10. Family Road Trip: Road trips are a great way to create conversation and get to know one another. Play car games, learn a new skill aka map reading, and discover new places.

11. Family Vacation Stay-cation: When a trip out of town in not in the books, stay in town. A staycation is a great way to get to know your city and down.

12. Forts: Take a rainy day and build indoor forts. Using pillows, blankets and your furniture, all activities for the day must be conducted in the family tent. Laughter definitely included!

13. Volunteer: What feels better, to give or to receive? Teach your child the important as well as the benefit of serving in their community, church, school or another organization.

14. Look at Family Photos: So many memories and moments are caught in photographs. In the era of digital photography, it’s not often your child holds a photo in their hands. Look through older photos and tell a story about each.

15. Use Conversation Cards: Include engaging conversation during the evening dinner. Conversation cards are a great way to engage one another and learn about one another deeply.

These ideas are just a few examples. You can add your own to the list or start with a clean late full of family fun that fits your crew.

There has never been a better time to start. Easy Printable Baby Sign Language Cart – 25 Basic Signs and Words For Moms. Teaching young children sign language gestures has never been easier. Details on how and when to start early communication. Instantly download six baby sign language printable charts custom to your own style.

Easy Baby Sign Language Basics

Easy Sign Language for Babies

What is baby sign language?

Baby Sign Language is the use of hand motions and gestures to communicate with infants and toddlers. This language of movement takes place prior to spoken language development to share emotions, desires and objects.

Sign language for babies is used to communicate with young children before speech is formed. It is a language that is not only used for those with hearing loss or difficulty. ASL baby sign language can prevent cries for babies who don’t have the words to express themselves. It also has the benefit of connecting auditory learning (via verbal communication) and kinesthetic learning (via the use of movement and motions.)

Is baby sign language the same as ASL?

What does ASL mean? In the case of sign language, ASL is an acronym for American Sign Language. ASL is one of many sign languages. Like spoken language, different countries use different sign language. Our baby sign language instruction chart is ASL.

When to start baby sign language

It is never too early for a baby to learn signs for early communication. Through sign language, communicating with preverbal children can began before speech envelopment occurs. The earlier you introduce sign-language, the more familiar your child will be when they have the motor skill to sign back to you. Babies as young as six months of age can benefit from sign language to express what they are feeling.

When you begin introducing food is a great time to start teaching sign language to babies. Start signing five simple words. Eat. More. Please. Finished. Thank you.

How to Teach Baby Sign Language

How to to teach baby signing

It is very simple and easy to teach baby sign language. Your baby will watch you sign the words and hear you say the word. Sign the word and say the word multiple times and then perform the action. For example, if I see my child has finished their Cheerios, I might say and sign more three times before I had my child more cheerios.

As you progress, you can sign and say the word then take your child’s hand and gently teach them the action. Say and sign more three times. After you do that, take your child’s hand and gently say and sign more with your voice and their hands. Repeat three times. Then hand your child “more” (in our example, the Cheerios.)

Repeat these same steps with all the new words you introduce. Start small, mastering a few simple words and skills. As your child becomes familiar with these basic signs, introduce more signing motions and gestures.

Examples of Baby Sign Language Basics

Start with some common phrases. In our family we began with these five examples of baby sign language basics.

More: Bring your thumbs and fingertips together, to make flat O shape. Then, bring your hands together and pull them apart repeatedly.

Finished: Open your palms and spread your fingers. Face your palms toward you and twist your wrists a couple of times.

Drink: Make your fingers and thumbs in the shape of a C like a cup. Plus the C on your chin and tilt the C toward your mouth as if drinking a cup.

Thank You: Place your fingers together and extend your thumb. Touch you fingers to your chin and bring your fingers forward as if blowing a kiss.

Please: Place your fingers together with thumb extended. Rub your fingers on your chest in a circular motion.

Eat: Place your fingers and thumb together in a pinching motion (as if making a duck bill or birds beak). Put your fingers and thumbs to your lip with the top of your hand facing outward. Repeat the motion as if feeding yourself with pinched fingers.

It’s important when you sign the motion, you also speak the motion for hearing babies and for non hearing babies. Hearing babies will connect the sound and motion. Non hearing babies will connect the motion and lips.

For additional resources, take a look at this Video Signing Dictionary.

Even with my three boys (ages 4, 4, 5) I find myself uses these basic signs in communication as part of their everyday interactions. Just a matter of habit.

Overall, give yourself some grace. The sign language gestures that you use in your home can be personalized to your family. What sign language motions work for your home? Even if they are different from ASL or any other foreign sign language, they fit for your family. Your child will not go to Harvard University based on the wrong signs they learned at 6 months of age!

Learn what is a time capsule and what to put inside. Plus, download and print this adorable Kindergarten to High School Time Capsule Printable: A printable time capsule to keep throughout your child’s school years filled with the best of memories.

Time stands still for no one and that is especially true when your kids are growing up. Turn back time and celebrate how things have changed with a time capsule! This time capsule printable is so much fun and it’s a great way to keep those precious memories alive.

What is a Time Capsule?

A time capsule is a container that is filled with items that represent a specific time period. Time capsule ideas are items including anything from photos and clothes to toys and trinkets.

The purpose of a time capsule is to put these items in the keepsake and bury it somewhere so that it can be opened at a later date to remind people of what life was like during that time. Burying it, might just be putting it in the deep crevices of a utility room or other hidden room in the house. A perfect time to open this is a milestone event like a birthday, graduation or wedding.

What to Put in Your Time Capsule?

what to put inside a time capsule photos

There are no set rules for what you should put in your time capsule, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Photographs of you, your friends, and your family
  • Newspaper clippings from the time period
  • A list of songs that were popular during that time
  • Movie tickets or posters
  • Clothing items from the time period
  • Sports memorabilia

In our time capsule worksheets, we include the following…

  • Teacher
  • School
  • Photo
  • Favorite Subject
  • Favorite TV show
  • Favorite Movie
  • Favorite Book
  • Favorite Song
  • Favorite Food
  • Favorite Activity
  • Favorite Saying/Quote

The sheets also provide an opportunity to answer the following time capsule questions…

  • When I grow up I want to be…
  • My best friends are…
  • I’m really awesome at…
  • After school I like to…
  • Next year I look forward to…
  • This year I got better at…
  • Something new I learned

How to Make a Time Capsule?

There are lots of different ways to make a time capsule, but here is one easy way to do it:

  1. Choose a time capsule container. This could be anything from a cardboard photo box to a plastic Sterilite container with a lid.
  2.  Decorate the container however you like. You can paint it, draw on it, or use stickers to decorate it.
  3. Collect items that represent the time period. As mentioned earlier, these could be photos, newspaper clippings, clothing items, etc. Anything that is important during the time you’re representing works.
  4. Put the items in the container and seal it shut. The sealing process depends on how you’re going to store the container until you open it. If the plan is to bury the time capsule, you’ll want to make sure it is sealed tightly so that water cannot get in. If you’re going to store it inside, a simple piece of tape over the lid will suffice.
  5. Choose a date for when you want to open the time capsule. This could be 5 years from now, 10 years from now, or even 50 years from now.
  6. Label the container with the date and a description of what is inside.
  7. Bury or store the capsule somewhere safe.

How to Open a Time Capsule?

There are two ways to handle a time capsule. The first way is to simply bury it and forget about it until the date that you have chosen to open it. The second way is to store it in a safe place and then open it on the date that you have chosen.
If you want to bury your time capsule, it is a good idea to mark the spot so that you can find it later. If you choose to store your time capsule, make sure to put it in a place where it will not be damaged by water or bugs.

Graduation Party Games

Now that your space looks great, let’s talk activities. Planning graduation party games that get your guests up and interacting is a great way to make your party a memorable one.

Here are some fun grad party games that will keep your guests entertained:

Diploma Relay Race

This game is perfect for a backyard graduation party! Have guests form groups of two and get into a line shoulder to shoulder. Place a diploma between the pair, and race to get across the finish line fastest. Drop the diploma, and you have to go back to the start. Oh did we mention, this is a game where you can’t use your hands? Better get creative!

Toast to the Grad

Is it even a backyard party without an obstacle course game? In this speed test, players will race with their wine glass filled with water around the obstacles to be the team who fills their bucket the fastest. Be sure to have plenty of towels on hand!

Name That Tune

Take a walk down memory lane as guests try to guess songs from the graduate’s years in school. This game is perfect for those who love to sing along and don’t want to get as active.

Memory Bank

This might be the best part of your party… Gather up the tissues and have each guest fill out a great memory they have of the graduate. Have the grad read through the cards and try to guess who wrote each one.

This is also a great way to gather cards that the graduate can read later or even take with them as they move into their new stage. If you prefer, you can do words of wisdom instead. You really can’t go wrong with either idea!

Pass the Parcel

This game is so fun if you are generous with the Saran Wrap parcel party favors. Fill your plastic wrap ball with full size candy bars, smarties candy, and a great prize in the center. The winner has the ball at the end of the game once all the layers have been removed.

The Key to Success

This game is quite tasty. If you have heard of a pie eating contest, you will love this game. Fill a pan with shaving cream and dig around the find the key… but guess what!?! Your hands are behind your back.

Dip-Low-Ma

Grab some balloons and see if you can keep them in the air! Dip it low and pick it up slow… man, I feel on a roll with throwback songs. I mean, if you hare a graduation playlist, this is a song to add and play during this fun game. Include more songs that fit the graduation year and theme and add them to the Name that Tune party game.

Are you Smarter than a Grad?

Alright smarty pants! This game is adults vs the kids. From pop culture to academic questions, see if which generation can declare they are smarter. The winners will get the most correct answers.

Charades

Split up into teams with an equal amount of players. In this classic game, similar to Taboo or forbidden words, act out themed words and see if your teammate can guess the word.

Steal the Cap

Divide players again. This is a perfect outdoor party games. Similar to steal the bacon, steal the grad cap (or baseball cap).

Mermaid parties are a fun theme idea for a girls’ party. Enjoy 11 mermaid party games & activities that will wow the kids and make a memorable day for the birthday girl and her little mermaids.

The Best Mermaid Games

Do your kids love mermaids? Mermaid themed birthday parties are full of colorful decorations, a backdrop, garlands and fun party supplies. The centerpiece is usually a beautiful decorated mermaid cake or two which represents the ocean or perhaps a sparkly glitter mermaid tail.

Like you, I’m always looking for creative new ideas that truly stand out at kid’s birthday parties. I’ve put together some mermaid party games that your little mermaid & her friends will love.

Mermaid Games for Kids

Mermaid themed games are a terrific way to keep kids entertained during your next birthday party. One of the best things about these mermaid party activities is their simplicity, they require almost no planning on your part.

Mermaid party games are great fun for any mermaid-themed birthday party. Creative games keep your guests entertained and having fun! With these exciting and engaging mermaid games you guests will be sure to keep moving and laughing without requiring too much prep work on your part.

Mermaid Games for Parties

Planning the perfect mermaid party isn’t hard with fun snacks and unique party ideas. But if you really want to take your child’s birthday party to the next level mermaid birthday party games are a must.

Mermaid Birthday Party Games

So, let’s get started thinking about the mermaid party games you could plan for your next mermaid-themed birthday party!

Musical Islands

This fun party activity gets everyone up and moving. Plus it’s super easy to set up! All you need is some hula hoops, a die, and tropical music. Similar to the classic musical chairs game, party guests move around the area while the music is playing. When the music stops, everyone will choose a numbered hula hoop to stand in. Roll the die and everyone in the matching number are out. Keep playing until there is only one person left. The winner is the last person standing!

Seaweed Limbo

Using colorful crepe paper tied to poles, mermaids will swim under the seaweed. The rules are the same as traditional limbo. Each round the poles are lowered, making the game more challenging. Whoever can still fit under when the last pole is in place wins!

Pass the Treasure

Similar to a Christmas gift wrapping game, treasure is wrapped in layers of colorful wrapping paper and bubble wrap. Pass the treasure around the circle until the music stops. Who ever is holding the package unwraps one layer of the treasure.

Participants can either keep any small trinkets that are unwrapped in the layers. The party game ends when the treasure is unwrapped. The lucky mermaid that unwraps the last layer gets the prize!

Burst the Bubble

This is another great active game that can be set up in seconds and played with all ages. All you need for this game is two sets of bubbles for each team. Keeping the opposite team from popping all your team’s bubbles while popping their bubbles is the goal. The team with bubbles left at the end of the game wins!

Seaweed Tangle

Using rolls of crepe paper (shades of blue, purple and green streamers work best for a mermaid theme) party guests will decorate their “ocean” with “seaweed” to make a fun maze that they can swim through.

Participants can go to treasure chests and pick out rewards like candy, pearl necklaces, jewels, mermaid crafts, or sequin wands.

Even more rewarding will be the empty stomachs ready for mermaid party food and tasty cupcakes for dessert!

Mermaid Party Games Printable PDF

The mermaid party games PDF download has eleven creative games that are perfect for any mermaid themed birthday party or summer party. Some mermaid games can be played with simple supplies, others will require a little bit of planning and creativity. The most important thing is to have fun!

Building Challenge – A classic game that is now even better with a LEGO twist! Use the PDF of challenge cards to give the kids a building challenge and a time limit and see what they come up with. Each player will have the same number and kind of blocks to complete the challenge. You can give small prizes for the creations like “tallest creation”, “most unique build” and “most LEGO bricks used” for added excitement.

Mini Figure Knockdown – The classic-style game is turned into a fun LEGO destroying challenge! Players will use NERF guns or water blasters to knock down as many LEGO man mini-figures as possible within the time limit.

Tallest Tower – How tall can your LEGO tower go? Players will race the clock and other players, stacking their bricks to see who gets the highest tower and is declared the winner! For a variation, kick the game up a notch and have the players wear blindfolds!

LEGO Chopstick Shuffle – A simple challenge, but a fun one with a twist! Give each player a bowl or pile of bricks and an empty bowl. Set the timer, and have them use only the chopsticks to transfer the LEGO blocks to the empty bowl. The player with the most building bricks in the second bowl when the timer goes off, wins!
