“DECORATING OFF”

Grab some already baked cookies and see who can decorate them the best. Set a timer for 5 minutes and at the end, the coolest cookie wins!

Supplies: Baked cookies, cookie decorating supplies.

TRUTH OR DARE BALLOON BURST

Think of this as a combination of truth or dare and musical chairs. Fill balloons with truth or dare questions and then fill them up with air. As the music is playing, pass the balloon around to each person. Once the music stops, the person holding the balloon has to pop the balloon and complete the dare inside or answer the question of truth.

Supplies: Balloons, paper, pencil, music. (See our 100 Truth or Dare Questions for Kids)

MURDER IN THE DARK CARDS

All you need is a deck of cards. Leave only the numbered cards in the pile, plus 1 ace and 1 face card. That’s it. Have everyone draw a card. The one who gets the ace card is the detective and the one who gets the face card is the murderer. The detective reveals themselves but no one else does.

As no one is looking, the murderer has to wink at their latest victim in which that person quietly goes “out” and puts down their card. It’s up to the detective only to figure out who is needing to be charged with the crime.

Supplies: A deck of cards.

SPIN THE BOTTLE OF NAIL POLISH

This is all about crazy nail colors! Put a nail polish bottle in the middle of the circle and spin. Whoever it lands on has to paint their nails that color. Keep going until crazy nails are everywhere.

Supplies: Random colors of fingernail polish.

CHARADES

This is the typical game of charades. You can even play in the dark to add a super fun twist to it.

Supplies: Charades cards templates or pieces of paper.

MUSICAL SLEEPING BAGS

Make certain that you have one less sleeping bag than people playing. Start the music and have everyone walking around the sleeping bags. Once the music stops, they get to hop in the bags and pretend to sleep. Anyone without a bag is out.

Supplies: Sleeping bags, music.

BOBBING 4 DONUTS

Grab some string and hang up those donuts. The first person that can finish the donut off the string without using their hands, wins!

Supplies: String, donuts.

SARDINES

It’s like a reverse game of hide and seek. This game starts with one person hiding and then everyone else looking for them. As they are found, the finder joins in each time until there is a huge group of people hiding and one final person trying to find them all.

KEEP TALKING

Just how much can you talk? Put a whole bunch of random topics on pieces of paper and put them in the bowl. The kids will draw out one piece and talk about that topic for 2 minutes non-stop. What all will they say?!

Supplies: Big bowl, pieces of paper, pencil.

BLIND VAN GOGH

Split up into two teams and pick someone to put on the blindfold. Once they can’t see what it is, choose an object that the other person has to explain (without saying the actual name of the object) and have them draw out what they think is being described.

Supplies: Blindfold, pencil, paper.

BLIND MAKEOVER

Get ready to show off your makeup skills. Pick someone to be the makeup person, and one person to get their face decorated. Add the blindfold to the makeup artist and set a timer for 2 minutes. See how good their makeup looks once done!

Supplies: Makeup supplies.

Rainy Day Activities Outdoors

It’s not that we don’t like the rain, but sometimes it leaves us feeling trapped inside with nothing to do. The good news is that there are plenty of things to do outside on rainy days! You just have to put on your rain jackets and boots, grab an umbrella, and be okay with getting a little wet. It’s all in good fun. Here are some ideas you can take out in the rain with you.

Disclosure: If you have a thunderstorm with lightning in the forecast, these are not advised.

Go on a rain walk with the kids. If you’ve never done this before, you’ll love seeing their delighted expressions as they listen to the rain, feel it on their skin, and see how different things look when they’re covered in rain droplets. Have you ever seen a spiderweb covered in the rain? It’s fascinating! | Still Playing School

Learn three easy ways to paint with rain so you can create a one-of-a-kind work of art on your next rainy day. You’ll need paper, a tray, liquid watercolors, markers, and water-soluble crayons. Color or paint your designs, put them in the tray, and take them outside in the rain to see what happens! | Picklebums

Let kids splish and splash in puddles to their hearts’ content. Puddle play is a terrific way to enjoy the outdoors on a rainy day. Just make sure the kids are properly dressed for it. Provide dishes, buckets, shovels, pipes, and other implements to encourage exploration and creative thinking. | Megan Zeni

Speaking of puddle play, the perfect rainy day isn’t complete without a little puddle jumping. It’s a great opportunity to talk about how puddles are made, what makes them dry up, and what makes the water ripple. | Fireflies and Mud Pies

Every kid should know how to make a mud pie. Instead of fussing about the mess, encourage your kids to mix up some water and dirt to make thick mud perfect for plopping into pie plates. Decorate the pies with flowers, pretty rocks, leaves, sticks, and other items found in nature. | Rhythms of Play

What better time to monitor the weather than when it’s raining? Use the ideas here to make a simple rain catcher with a “weatherman” wooden spoon that measures how much rain it has collected. | Rainy Day Mum

Here’s another version of a rain gauge made using a jumbo test tube, craft foam, and a few other craft supplies you probably have on hand already. Empty it every day and record how much rain you get over the course of a season. It’ll be fun to see how much the rain can vary from one day, week, or season to the next. | Life Over C’s

Go outside and make some sidewalk chalk art in the rain. Kids will be surprised to see how much more vibrant the colors of the chalk are when it gets wet. | Fun-A-Day

Combine sidewalk art and puddle play with this fun color puddle splash activity. You’ll need to be okay with the possibility of stains or else make sure the colors are completely washable before diving feet first into a color-filled puddle. | Lemon Lime Adventures

Sight word puddle jumping is a fantastic way for little ones to learn their sight words. When you pair movement with study, it helps the brain form new connections to the material. If you plan to do this one in the rain, you’ll want to laminate the words first. | Fantastic Fun and Learning

Rainy Day Activities Indoors

We understand that sometimes you just can’t get outdoors to enjoy the rain even though you’d like to. With the rain coming down outside, it’s not always easy to find something fun to do indoors.

But forget TV or video games—it’s time to get creative! Lucky for you, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep everyone entertained. Here are some ideas to help you get started: You can play board games with friends and family, build things out of Lego blocks or K’Nex pieces, read books together or paint pictures. There is also no shortage of craft projects that can be done by the whole family, such as making slime or tie-dye t-shirts.

We’ve listed even more craft ideas below. Some are rain-themed, while others are not. Just grab a few friends or family members, some snacks, and get ready for some quality time spent together in the comfort of your home.

First, make sure to print our indoor games for kids. These activities can keep your kids entertained, especially with a larger crowd! One great solution is Minute to Win It Games. All of which can be played inside with larger or small crows.

Curious little scientists will love this simple rain cloud in a jar experiment. You can set it up in just minutes using a jar, water, shaving cream, and food coloring. Just as clouds get too heavy and release rain, this shaving cream cloud will release the food coloring when it’s too heavy. Use blue food coloring or make a rainbow cloud with lots of different colors. | The Best Ideas for Kids

This easy rain craft for kids is simple enough for toddlers to make, but preschoolers and kindergarteners will enjoy it, too. You’ll need some cotton balls, construction paper, glue, and paint to make a cloud pouring raindrops all over the page. You could also let your kids use their fingerprints to make the raindrops instead. | Crafts on Sea

After the rain comes rainbows, and this fizzy rainbow experiment will have your kids eager to find their own! Turn Jell-O into fizzy fun with a bit of baking soda. Then, you’ll be able to do the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction we all know and love. Plus, by using Jell-O, it’ll smell amazing! | Fun-A-Day

Preschoolers can practice counting with this rain-themed sensory bin featuring cottony clouds, blue glass beads to represent raindrops, and sparkly gold pipe cleaners to make lightning. Kids will love all the different textures here—soft, fluffy, smooth, rough, etc. | Fantastic Fun and Learning

Have an indoor scavenger hunt with items you’d typically find around the house. For example, you’ll look for something that’s red, something to eat with, something with a nose, and so on. This free printable makes the scavenger hunt super easy. Just print it, grab some pencils, and everyone’s all set to go. Add a timer to make it more challenging. | Hey, Let’s Make Stuff! (see a full list of More Scavenger Hunts for Kids too.)

Rock painting is a great activity for a rainy day. Then, once it stops raining, you can add the rocks to your garden or hide them around your community if you have a local rock group. It’s always so fun when someone finds your rock. What a cool way to brighten someone’s day! | Sixth Bloom  (see more Rock Painting Ideas for Kids too!)

Build a fort in the living room! It makes family movie night a lot more fun, and it’s also a cozy hideaway for kids to go to read their books or enjoy some quiet time. | Messy Little Monster

What better time to make something for a friend than on a rainy day? DIY friendship bracelets are easy, fun, and thoughtful. You’ll need some embroidery floss in various colors, buttons, and scissors. Have a blast designing something unique for each of your BFFs or siblings. | Crafts by Amanda

Ready for meaningful mealtime conversation? These dinner conversation starters are what you need! Download and print 65+ engaging topics and questions that are a perfect fit for connection at the dinner table. Set includes blank cards to add your own relevant questions.

Best Dinner Conversation Starters for Families

Dinnertime is a valuable time of the day to connect as a family. It’s a time to share how your day went, to catch up on news, and to enjoy each other’s company. Dinnertime conversation starters are a great resource to keep the conversation flowing and to prevent awkward silences.

Coming up with topics of conversation can be tough, especially for kids. Often small talk occurs but we don’t get to the root of who our child is. We miss this occasion and before we know it days have turned to years and we are waving good-bye in the review mirror as they drive off to college.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of family dinner conversation starters that will help get the conversation flowing around the table. Turn regular family dinners into a favorite family activity.

Why are Family Dinner Conversation Starters Important?

printable family dinner conversation starters for the dinner table

Family dinner conversation starters are important because they help families connect with each other. They provide a way to share news, catch up on what’s going on in each other’s lives, and enjoy each other’s company.

In addition, family dinner conversation starters can help prevent awkward silences and to encourage friendly talks about important topics and lighthearted conversations that make a big impact on family bonds.

How to Use Family Dinner Conversation Starters

There are many ways to use family dinner conversation starters. They can be used as icebreakers to get the conversation started, or they can be used to keep the conversation going if it starts to lull. The important thing is to find a way to use them that works for your family.

Some families like to go around the table and have each person share one thing about their day. Others like to pick one conversation starter and discuss it as a family. And still others like to use conversation starters as a way to get to know new family members or friends.

Simply print and cut the cards. Add them to a bowl and use as you’d like for a routine dinnertime. You could also make a conversation starter jar. Fold the cards, insert in the mason jar and keep it lidded on the dinning table.

Alternatively, get creative with how you use these cards. Is it a holiday or special time of year? Incorporate the holiday into how you use the conversations. For example, during Easter put a different conversation card in plastic Easter eggs. Put all the eggs in an Easter basket in the center of the table. During the lent season, a family member can draw and an Easter Egg and you can go over different dinner questions during the spring season.

What are Some Good Family Dinner Conversation Starters?

How many times do you use the question “How was your day today?” in a year? For me, I use it daily and often forget to use my pocket full of reliable conversation starters for kids. While it’s great to know about their day, go deeper than asking such a generic question.

Some good family dinner conversation starters include:

  • Did anything interesting happen at school/work?
  • What are you looking forward to this weekend?
  • What was your favorite part of the day?
  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
  • What was the best thing that happened to you today?
  • Tell me about your friends.
  • Who do you admire most and why?
  • What was the best thing about your day?
  • What do you like the most about the person sitting to your left?
  • What is the funniest thing that happened to you this year?
  • If you could turn someone nice – who would it be?
  • How would your pet describe you?
  • What is your favorite family tradition and why?
  • If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?

These including funny conversation starters but also deeper conversation starters where you really dig into your child and spouse’s heart. What are are their fears, hopes, desires, dreams?

Dinner Conversation Starters Printable

Erase the awkward silence and create a memory your kids will pass on to their kids. To help get the chatter going, we’ve designed a easy to use printable that you can print out, cut apart, and leave on the table for family dinners.

There are 69 conversation starters and once you use them all, you can go back through the cards- the answers will change over time and depending on who is answering the question. For example, “What was your last thought before going to sleep last night?”

Family Conversation Starters Printable Cards

These helpful cards help your family get deep with these discussion starters that are great for both kids and adults. In this Family Conversation Starter Cards Printable PDF Set, there are 69 convo starters and a blank page of 24 so you can add your own questions. Print the blank page as many times as you’d like to create personalized starters for your family or the time of year.

Make time for people who make time and learn more about friends and family at dinner time! Pull out some of the cards and use when hosting a dinner party, for Thanksgiving dinner or even Christmas dinner party. A good friend and party guests might enjoy reliving their earliest memory, dream job, favorite holiday, biggest regret, most desired superpower or favorite movie. They also make great conversation ice breakers for adults and kids alike. It’s the perfect time to use the blank cards to add topics and questions that are a fit for those individuals you are hosting. It’s sure to bring the laughter.

In other words, they are very educationally beneficial while also being a ton of fun! Enjoy these steam building challenges and as a bonus enjoy this printable scavenger hunt in the classroom.

STEM Printables - STEM Building Challenge and STEM Scavenger Hunt

Making learning fun is always a goal for parents and teachers alike. You want your kids to be entertained, but nothing’s wrong when there’s a little education going on at the same time. It helps make the most of playtime. There are many STEM toys out there that are great at helping foster skills and learning concepts while also being fun for kids.

Speaking of STEM, however, your kids can have fun without buying special toys. There are many building materials you can use that are found in your own home! Things like:

  • LEGOs (okay, this is a special toy, but most already have these painful blocks at home!)
  • Q-Tips
  • Aluminum foil
  • Toothpicks
  • Paper plates
  • Straws
  • String
  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Plastic wrap
  • Pencils

It’s amazing what you can build with when you get a little creative!

STEM Challenges for Kids

We have put together a fun printable STEM Challenges pack for kids. We hope your kids enjoy building these different items using household materials. There’s also a fun STEM scavenger hunt included!

Once you print these fun STEM worksheets, you will see a number of fun activities. Clip the cards for more handheld fun or leave the paper as is. We recommend you print on cardstock paper so the challenge cards or sheets stand up to long-term use.

You’ll see the supplies list within the STEM Challenge cards. Your kids can refer to this each time they go to make something new.

Examples of building STEM Challenges for Kids that are included:

  • Catapult
  • Robot
  • Tall Tower
  • Marble Maze
  • Straw Rocket
  • Hexagon

You can always add to the challenges by coming up with more things for your kids to build and create!

Of course these are perfect activities for at home, but they can also be used in the class – share with your teachers!

STEM Scavenger Hunt

STEM Challenges classroom Scavenger Hunt for Kids Printables PDF

Give your kids a break at building by taking them on a scavenger hunt in the classroom! This classroom scavenger hunt printable offers a list of STEM-related items that your kids can find at home or when out. Print the hunt again and again each time you go somewhere new!

When doing the scavenger hunt, your kids will have to find things like something…

  • With wheels
  • That needs a battery
  • That cools items
  • Reflective
  • Symmetrical
  • Asymmetrical
  • That can dissolve in water

All of the items in the scavenger hunt uses one of the fields of STEM, so they will be learning why they are searching.

How do you do a scavenger hunt in the classroom?

This scavenger hunt checklist is the perfect classroom activity. Keep it within the four walls or extend it around the school or even outside to the playground.  It extends the lesson into something fun and engaging which totally equates memorable.  Imagine that light bulb moment that will go off when taking a science assessment but connecting the test question to the science classroom activity.

Another way to extend the science lesson, once they do this stem scavenger hunt at school, have them make their own scavenger hunt activity. Use this science lesson (or any lesson that is similar) and let the kids go to down making their own scavenger hunts for classmates. I bet they get very creative and competitive! You can even use this on another subject – how about a DIY math scavenger hunt?

For team building, pair up kids in tables or teams and let them take the classroom treasure hunt checklist their peers made. Do you have science buddies? If you are apart of an upper grade, pair students. Older students can be paired with kids from lower elementary classrooms. There is a lot learned in teaching a younger peer. Let them guide their science buddy through this simple scavenger hunt and science activity.

This can be the perfect activity for online learning too. For distance learning or virtual activities using the computer (even if at school), this can be a series of images they find on the web similar to a photo scavenger hunt only collecting images and adding them to their Google classroom photo library/folders.

Guest List

Since this is a team scavenger hunt, you will want a good amount of kiddos on your birthday party guest list. Plan to have at least 4 to 10 kids on a team to execute this photo treasure hunt. I personally think, the more the merrier but you do want to be able to control your party guests in a public location.

Planning the teen guest list is rather important. Consider you guest list as your location is going to be in a public setting. Do you know the child, do you trust the child? These are all good questions to ask yourself before your send out the teen party invites.

Consider adding a few adults to the guest list that way you have power in numbers of controlling the wild teens.

Scavenger Hunt Location

The first step is to pick a location that you want the hunt to take place in. This can be anything from a local park to a shopping mall. Popular places to host a tween scavenger hunt include Target, the mall, an outdoor shopping center or Walmart. You could even take a photography scavenger hunt to an amusement park.

Consider how crowded the area is. how much can you control the space. Are the busy highways or roads, is security available, etc. You will be the adult in charge, so the location is very important.

Once you have the location, you need to come up with a list of items that the tweens and teens will need to find during the hunt.

Checklist of Scavenger Hunt Items

Next, come up with a list of items for the scavenger hunt. The items should reflect interests, popular themes and trends among teenagers.

photo scavenger hunt checklist

Some ideas for items to include on the scavenger hunt list are:

  • A picture of the entire team with a sales associate
  • A picture of a group member wearing a funny hat
  • A picture of a item that you can’t live without
  • A picture of something that starts with each letter of your teen’s name
  • A group selfie with all participants
  • A shot of a team member doing a silly pose
  • Find a celebrity look-alike and take a picture with them
  • Go to a famous landmarks and take selfies in front of it

These are just a few suggestions of items that would be perfect for a picture scavenger hunt for teens. Don’t be afraid to get silly- that’s the whole point of a photograph scavenger hunt.

Customize the list of photo scavenger hunt ideas for your group and the kids are sure to have a blast!

Photo Scavenger Hunt Checklist for Teens and Youth

Whatever you do, don’t stress. This is a fun and crazy game meant to lighten the mood at any party. To help you put the fun back in your party plan, we’ve put together a printable scavenger hunt list that will help you if you’re feeling stuck or you’re short on time.

This checklist is meant to be generic for any location. However, go through it. If you find there is a scavenger hunt clues/items that does not fit your chosen location, have the kids cross it off before the treasure hunt begins.

Get a copy of the Photo Scavenger Hunt for Teens PDF

How to Play

Begin the scavenger hunt birthday party with a starting location. This can be the food court of your public setting. It gives parents a place for drop off and pickup. It also creates a meeting and emergency spot as needed during the treasure hunt. Your food court typically has bathrooms and and it will provide you seating to talk through the game instructions.

Once you have a photo scavenger hunt list of items, it’s time to start the adventure! Go over the scavenger hunt rules and give each team a list of things they need to find and take photos of. Make sure the teams fill in their start time before they head out to search for items.

On the start of go, teams will be set free in the wild like a bunch of animals. As they find items they will take a photograph (using their smartphones or cameras) and place a checkmark by the item on their fun photo scavenger hunt list of ideas. There is no order to the clues, they can find their next clue in any order.

Plan a meeting place for everyone to check in and set a time limit for the hunt. Anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours is usually plenty of time to complete the hunt. When it’s time to check in, have each team present their photos to mom and the fellow group members on the other team.

Finally, scoring. Victory is only declared when you have winners. The teammates that finish first, with all the items correctly, win. If no one finishes before times up, the team with the most points (or items completed on their checklist) wins the scavenger hunt! Deduct points for every minute the team goes over the timer.

For a variation, you can make this a photo challenge too. Take a look at the pics and vote for winners based best photos.

If you need prizes for a teenage scavenger hunt, consider $5 gift cards to perhaps a few of the stores in the mall. Other fun scavenger hunt teen game prizes can be giant candy bars, cash, small trophies, food, iTunes gift cards or even fidget toys.

Pro Tip: Run through the scavenger hunt yourself the day before. If something is not available, tell the kids to go ahead and scratch off the freebie. This will also give you an estimate of the time needed for the scavenger hunt at this location.

The point of mall scavenger hunts is to have fun, so the photos don’t have to be perfect. Just make sure everyone gets involved and has a good time.

Once everyone is done, head to the food court to sing happy birthday and enjoy some cake, cupcakes or even cookies!
