These STEM Challenges for kids help promote one (or more) of the following subjects: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In other words, they are very educationally beneficial while also being a ton of fun! Enjoy these steam building challenges and as a bonus enjoy this printable scavenger hunt in the classroom.

Making learning fun is always a goal for parents and teachers alike. You want your kids to be entertained, but nothing’s wrong when there’s a little education going on at the same time. It helps make the most of playtime. There are many STEM toys out there that are great at helping foster skills and learning concepts while also being fun for kids.

Speaking of STEM, however, your kids can have fun without buying special toys. There are many building materials you can use that are found in your own home! Things like:

LEGOs (okay, this is a special toy, but most already have these painful blocks at home!)

STEM Challenges for Kids

We have put together a fun printable STEM Challenges pack for kids. We hope your kids enjoy building these different items using household materials. There’s also a fun STEM scavenger hunt included!

Once you print these fun STEM worksheets, you will see a number of fun activities. Clip the cards for more handheld fun or leave the paper as is. We recommend you print on cardstock paper so the challenge cards or sheets stand up to long-term use.

You’ll see the supplies list within the STEM Challenge cards. Your kids can refer to this each time they go to make something new.

STEM Scavenger Hunt

Give your kids a break at building by taking them on a scavenger hunt in the classroom! This classroom scavenger hunt printable offers a list of STEM-related items that your kids can find at home or when out. Print the hunt again and again each time you go somewhere new!

When doing the scavenger hunt, your kids will have to find things like something…

With wheels
That needs a battery
That cools items
Reflective
Symmetrical
Asymmetrical
That can dissolve in water

All of the items in the scavenger hunt uses one of the fields of STEM, so they will be learning why they are searching.

How do you do a scavenger hunt in the classroom?

This scavenger hunt checklist is the perfect classroom activity. Keep it within the four walls or extend it around the school or even outside to the playground. It extends the lesson into something fun and engaging which totally equates memorable. Imagine that light bulb moment that will go off when taking a science assessment but connecting the test question to the science classroom activity.

Another way to extend the science lesson, once they do this stem scavenger hunt at school, have them make their own scavenger hunt activity. Use this science lesson (or any lesson that is similar) and let the kids go to down making their own scavenger hunts for classmates. I bet they get very creative and competitive! You can even use this on another subject – how about a DIY math scavenger hunt?

For team building, pair up kids in tables or teams and let them take the classroom treasure hunt checklist their peers made. Do you have science buddies? If you are apart of an upper grade, pair students. Older students can be paired with kids from lower elementary classrooms. There is a lot learned in teaching a younger peer. Let them guide their science buddy through this simple scavenger hunt and science activity.

This can be the perfect activity for online learning too. For distance learning or virtual activities using the computer (even if at school), this can be a series of images they find on the web similar to a photo scavenger hunt only collecting images and adding them to their Google classroom photo library/folders.

I remember when I was little, and I was always creating fun scenes and jobs in my head. One of the creative games that I played over and over again was that I was working at the grocery store! There’s just something so fun about pretending to scan items and help out the customers, and this is what stemmed the idea to make these super fun kids play restaurant printables.

These pretend play restaurant ideas are easy to print, which means that the kids can start creating their own restaurant area in the house (or outside!) right away. This fun and interactive game would also be great for a sleepover or a super cute addition to any playroom as well.

What are fun ways to use these pretend play restaurant printables?

This is where the fun starts! Once everything is printed off, your little one can create their own restaurant as they see fit. You get to be the customer and choose food items from the printable menu and wait for your play food to arrive! Did you know? Memories are created when something different happens. Have you noticed how quickly the days and weeks fly by when you are in the same old routine. When you change up that daily routine and add in something different, you have created a memory in your child’s mind. It is a bump in the road on their walk of life and creates something they look back on – that can be good or bad. Why not create more bumps in the road that are good.

What are some fun things to do at the beach?

Summer is the perfect time of year to head to the beach. If you are looking for fun beach activities, we have a really good checklist of ideas for kids of all ages. From games, to water play, contests and more, you will have so much fun you might have to set a timer to remind you to reapply sunscreen! It’s easy to burn when you are distracted!

Beach Games: Beach games are perfect for using common items you already have in the sand. Ideas include beach Frisbee golf, water relays, beach bowling and more. They are beach activities that will fill the entire day and give someone the claim of victory!
Sand Castle Contest: Divide in teams and see who can build the best sand castle. The whole team can look for natural decorations like seashells, seaweed and more.
Sand Pictionary: Use the sand to play Pictionary. Divide in teams. Teammates will draw pictures in the sand while their team tries to guess. Items can include an ocean animal, objects found on the beach and more.
Fly at Kite: We all know about kites but how often do you get the perfect day to do this outdoor activity? The beach is perfect for giving the right amount of wind to fly a kite.
Beach Crafts: Using sea shells and other beach items, turn your finds into art work. You can also upcycle trash found on the beach for a fun beach craft. Ideas include water bottle jelly fish, sand Play-doh and more.
Beach Party: While on your beach vacation, have a beach themed party. This can include a pirate party, kid’s baby shark party, adult white party, or even a teen glow in the dark neon party.

Have a Beach Treasure Hunt: Divide in groups for a team building scavenger hunt. Use a beach scavenger hunt list to find items commonly found on the beach.

You can also hit the dollar store when you arrive at the beach and leave behind any beach supplies you do not want to cart back home.

It’s very easy to create this craft once you have your beach scavenger hunt digital download.

Open the printable scavenger hunt in your PDF viewer.

Place card stock in your printer.

Push Print.

You may out the square and trim the corners with a Corner Punch (we used a Martha Stewart punch. It’s a fun craft too to have on hand.)

At this stage, you have the option to laminate your printable to keep it water proof.

Use a glue gun or adhesive spray to stick the beach scavenger checklist to your beach pail.

Tie the pencil with twine to the bucket.

We think a fun option is to fill pail with a few beach items. Consider adding a water bottle, sunscreen and a snack. Everyone knows the sun makes you crave a tasty beach snack.

Beach Photo Scavenger Hunt

This scavenger hunt is perfect for young kids but you can easily convert it into a beach scavenger hunt for adults, teens or youth. Turn this checklist into a Beach Photo Scavenger Hunt.

Race to see who can find the items first. In order to put a check by the beach item, teams must take a photograph of the item. This can be done with a camera or cell phone.

What is a Time Capsule?

A time capsule is a container that is filled with items that represent a specific time period. Time capsule ideas are items including anything from photos and clothes to toys and trinkets.

The purpose of a time capsule is to put these items in the keepsake and bury it somewhere so that it can be opened at a later date to remind people of what life was like during that time. Burying it, might just be putting it in the deep crevices of a utility room or other hidden room in the house. A perfect time to open this is a milestone event like a birthday, graduation or wedding.

What to Put in Your Time Capsule?

There are no set rules for what you should put in your time capsule, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

Photographs of you, your friends, and your family
Newspaper clippings from the time period
A list of songs that were popular during that time
Movie tickets or posters
Clothing items from the time period
Sports memorabilia

How to Make a Time Capsule?

There are lots of different ways to make a time capsule, but here is one easy way to do it:

Choose a time capsule container. This could be anything from a cardboard photo box to a plastic Sterilite container with a lid.
Decorate the container however you like. You can paint it, draw on it, or use stickers to decorate it.
Collect items that represent the time period. As mentioned earlier, these could be photos, newspaper clippings, clothing items, etc. Anything that is important during the time you’re representing works.
Put the items in the container and seal it shut. The sealing process depends on how you’re going to store the container until you open it. If the plan is to bury the time capsule, you’ll want to make sure it is sealed tightly so that water cannot get in. If you’re going to store it inside, a simple piece of tape over the lid will suffice.
Choose a date for when you want to open the time capsule. This could be 5 years from now, 10 years from now, or even 50 years from now.
Label the container with the date and a description of what is inside.
Bury or store the capsule somewhere safe.

How to Open a Time Capsule?

There are two ways to handle a time capsule. The first way is to simply bury it and forget about it until the date that you have chosen to open it. The second way is to store it in a safe place and then open it on the date that you have chosen.
If you want to bury your time capsule, it is a good idea to mark the spot so that you can find it later. If you choose to store your time capsule, make sure to put it in a place where it will not be damaged by water or bugs.

Update Discolored Recessed Lighting

Want to know something funny? I stare at our dining room recessed lights so much, that I invested in this easy, low-cost hack twice. It was on my to do list so long, I bought my solution and then bought it again months later! Either way, I took my recessed lights from looking discolored and dated for under $7! I can’t wait to show you how.

Raise your hand if you agree recessed lights catch the most cobwebs and dust. I swear every time I turn on the light, it is like adding a spot light to the ugly mess of dust and spider houses. At least it limits the mount of decorating I must do for Halloween, right?

Why do recessed lights turn yellow?

There are a number or reasons recessed lights turn yellow. First, older light bulbs can put off a lot of heat. Between the heat and gasses, over time small chemical reactions take place discoloring your lighting cans. This can also occur from age and exposure to dust and other elements in the air.

How do you clean recessed lights?

Good news! Depending on the height of your ceiling, weekly or monthly cleaning of recessed lights is not a challenge. Make sure your lights are off and cool to the touch. Placing a damp cloth or touching a hot light bulb can lead to the light bulb exploding.

For lighting cleaning of recessed lights, use a Swiffer Duster Super Extender Handle. It will expend up to 6 feet and the small yellow fibers will grab onto dust and cob webs. If you have cathedral ceilings, consider getting a telescoping pole for lights that will come with a light bulb changing kit as well as a tool for dusting.

For deep cleaning of recess lights, remove the light bulb and simply wipe the bulbs. Next, use a damp cloth on the inside of the canisters and dry thoroughly before putting your light bulb back in the can. You can keep up with a rotating home cleaning task using a cleaning checklist.

Unfortunately, no matter how much you clean, you never will be able to remove yellowed recessed lighting. The dingy shade of yellow is from oxidation and chemical reactions. To improve the discolored metal, you need to buy new or paint recessed lights.

How do you update recessed lighting?

There are a number of ways to update recessed lighting. If you have the budget, you can replace recessed lights to Newer LED Can Lights. This project will take a little bit of learning or you can hire an electrician.

Sometimes instead of replacing recessed lighting with flush mount lighting, you can save a lot of money by doing something cheaper – buying LED Lightbulbs. You can buy LED light bulbs in bulk at

If you are updating the yellowed trim on recessed lighting, I highly recommend moving over to LED lights. This will bring down the heat emitted by light bulbs why they are turned on saving you both on your electric bill and also prevented your recessed lights form discoloring again.

Moving? Lighting is so important for selling a home. If you are home staging, you do not want to invest in expensive LED lights. Another option is to take your existing can lights and update discolored recessed Lighting for under $10 by painting them. This makes your home look fresh and your electrical work look brand new.

Can recessed lights be painted?

Recessed light white trim yellowed? The cheapest and easiest way to updated yellowed recessed lighting is to paint it. Spray paint is a low-cost home improvement project that only takes five minutes. If you are home staging, it can increase the value of your home removing signs of age or dated yellow can lights.

We have older recessed lighting. There is always the issue of heat so I picked up Rust-Oleum High Heat Enamel Spray in White for a low cost. The high heat spray paint protected surfaces subject to heat up to 1000°F. I knew my recessed lights were not getting that hot, so I felt sure this was the right product for us.

Because of the height, I had my husband remove the lights bulbs and then the recess cans from the ceiling.

First I cleaned the canned lights with an all surface spray and a dusting cloth. I let them sit a bit to dry. After they dried, I numbered my light cans in order so I knew where t place them after I was done. While, I think the canned lights could fit in in of the holes in the celling, I find it best to keep them in their original spots.

I took an upcycled box and spread it out on my deck. Once try, I placed the metal cans on the cardboard and I lightly coated each recessed lighting can with the high heat paint. The white spray paint dried to the touch in 20 minutes.

Because our recess lights can tilt at different angles I sharply tilted the light and gave them a second coat. After everything was dry to the touch, I sharply tilted the lights in the opposite direction and gave the lights a final touch of white paint.

After three coats, we let them sit for up to 4 hours for good measure. The white paint for recessed lights had a pretty quick dry time, but I wanted to be sure they were dry before i started touching them to put them back in the ceiling.

I kept track of my numbered lights and placed them all back in the spot they came from.

Don’t they look amazing?! Well worth my $7 investment and they look like brand new lights!
