elf on the shelf meaning explained tradition questions answers

The times is here! It’s the season when a mischievous little red guy returns to millions of home. A little naughty and a little nice, some may be confused as to why this little elf is welcome into the homes of many. If you have been wondering about Who is the Elf on the Shelf and are uneasy knowing where to begin, we have all the Elf answers for you today!

The Elf on the Shelf Explained

The Elf on the Shelf is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it has been around dozens of years. Over the years the history of the Elf has evolved but one thing remains true. The Elf is a visitor from the North Pole. He is sent from Santa with a little bit of Christmas magic. During the holiday season, the Elf visits the homes of many boys and girls. He will hide in a new place each day. Every evening he returns to Santa’s workshop to report to the St. Nick who has been naughty and who has been nice. With the help of the family Elf, the big guy can create his nice list for making presents for good boys and girls.

Elf on the Shelf History

The tradition of the Elf doll has actually been around for over 50 years. Some might argue for closer to 100 years. Whichever the argument, one thing holds true. It is that the Scout Elf doll was originally a children’s book written by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. Together they self-published the book “The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition” in 2005. It is paired with the original The Elf on the Shelf doll. This doll has a red body, white triangular collar and red hat. This particular elf doll and story are copywritten meaning you might see knock-offs but they are not the actual Elf doll.

vintage elf on the shelf doll

The Elf on the Shelf tradition took off in 2008 when the Elf on the Shelf doll earned a Best Toy Award from Learning Express Toys – a specialty toy and game retailer. You can find vintage Elf dolls from the 1940s, 1950s and 1970s. Some of the vintage elves aka shelf sitters carry a similar red outfit as Scout Elf. Others have shades of green, stripe patterns and even jingle bells.

Elf on the Shelf Book Summary

If you have an Elf on the Shelf doll, you likely have an Elf on the Shelf story book. This is because neither product is sold individually. The Scout Elf doll comes with the Elf on the Shelf hardcover book. However, if you got your doll second hand you might be wondering more about the Elf on the Shelf story.

reading the elf on the shelf book unboxing

The Elf on the Shelf Book summary tells the story of an Elf’s visit. Each day the Elf arrives in your home. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits their family starting around Thanksgiving. Each evening he/she goes and returns from the North Pole. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. It is very important that the Elf is not touch each evening or the elves’ magic will be lost! Upon arrival each family is able to name their special Elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve.

What’s the point of Elf on the Shelf?

The purpose of the Elf on the Shelf is to bring a little bit of Christmas magic into your home. It keeps the spirit of the season alive as you count down the days until Christmas day. Call the Elf a precursor or a welcome to Christmas morning on December 25. Who is the Elf on the Shelf for? The Elf on the Shelf is perfect for a family that celebrates Christmas and the arrival of Santa. If you area  family that celebrates the birth of Jesus, there are many ways Christians can use Elf on the Shelf in the home too.

In addition to the spirit of Christmas, the Elf is also a good reminder to younger children to be good. Kids’ behavior can change with just the prompting of “don’t forget the elf is watching!” It’s like immediate Santa surveillance.  This positive Christmas character’s purpose is not to bring shame or anxiety to young children but rather to remind them that this season is about good deeds and acts of kindness toward others.

Elf on the Shelf Tradition

elf on the shelf tradition explained

This Christmas Tradition begins with a book and a red North Pole Visitor aka The Elf on the Shelf. Of course, this holiday tradition can be adapted to any Elf doll. For most families, the same Elf arrives every year. That means after year one (when your family adopts and names their Elf on the Shelf) the same Elf will arrive each year. It is your families dedicated elf. Some families grow their Elf family with the arrival of Elf babies or multiple Elf dolls.

A to Z Alphabet Scavenger Hunt

Download and enjoy this fun letter treasure hunt. Preschoolers & young readers race through the home/classroom as they discover objects that start with each letter of the alphabet in this cute alphabet scavenger hunt printable.

Alphabet Scavenger Hunt Printable for Toddlers

The alphabet is an important tool for learning to read and write. This alphabet scavenger hunt around the house (or classroom) is a fun way to help your child practice identifying letters from A to Z!

Letter Scavenger Hunt

Help your toddler and preschool child learn the alphabet a fun activity that not only uses review and repetition, but gets them moving!
To get started you’ll want to make sure that you’ve reviewed the alphabet and all 26 letters with your child previously so there’s no frustration with the activity- nothing slows learning more than boredom or confusion.

How to Play

The goal of this game is for your child to identify all 26 letters in the alphabet. For each letter, they will need to find an object that starts with that letter sound around the house.

Once they find the object, they will need to identify which letter of the alphabet the object starts with so you can write it down.
To make sure things go smoothly, you might want to make sure there are some special items laid out or on display for letters like X, Y, and Z that might be harder to find. Items like a yarn ball for Y or a zebra stuffed animal for Z work well.

If your child is younger and identifying objects by their starting letter is difficult, work as a team to talk about the objects. You can say the name of the item, sound out the first sound/letter, then have your child repeat it back to you. Ex. “T-t-truck. Tuh, tuh, truck starts with the letter T.”

For an advanced version for older kids or emergent readers, you can even set a timer or create a time limit. Make it a race between two kids and see who can do the letter treasure hunt the fastest and get the most letters correct. You can even award points of items that are not duplicates. For example, one person got a ball and one person got a baby for the letter B. The winner gets the most points.

When all 26 letters have been found and identified, review the objects and letters with your child again. You can even talk about what sound each letter makes and how that sound is different from other letters.

If you need ideas for ABC objects around the home, take a look at this list of ideas for each letter of the alphabet.

More Alphabet Ideas

For older learners, you can also use this opportunity to help your child practice their writing skills by having them trace the letters after finding the objects! You can include both uppercase letters and lowercase letters to trace.

Make a yummy lunch that features different letters of the alphabet such as ants on a log (celery, peanut butter, raisins), cheese and crackers, or animal crackers. Trader Joes has some fun graham cracker alphabet letter cookies. They are a perfect snack for letter recognition.

Get active with an alphabet hopscotch! Write down different letters on some construction paper or cardboard then lay them out in order on the ground. As you call out each letter, have your child hop on top of it.

Use post it notes. Label 26 post it notes, one with each letter of the alphabet. The kids have to go around the home or classroom and place one sticky note on an object that starts with that letter.

Have your child lay down on their stomach then call out different letters for them to find around the room and trace with their finger.
There are so many ways to play and learn with the alphabet- use your imagination!

How to Use the Back to School Games

There are several ways to use these games. You can have a fun last day of summer with your kids and some neighborhood friends or even help set these activities up for your child’s classroom.

The beginning of the school year can bring a lot of anxiety. For teachers, these back to school activities make great simple icebreakers or team-building games as students share a challenge and try to solve a task. It’s a great way to make a new friend as you introduce new classmates to you and the classroom. They might find school a fun place to return to!

They also make great back to school party games if you want to invite classmates over to meet before the first day of school too! Have so much fun playing games that are a bit school themed. End summer break and excite your child about their school supplies and the first day of school. You can even choose one of the games to play each day after school paired with a fun snack!

How to Play Minute-to-Win It Games

The basic idea of a minute to win it game, is you have 60 seconds to complete a challenge. You can complete the task before the time, or you can complete the task within the time.

How to Score

With each game, the adult (or individual in charge) decides how points are awarded. For example, the first person/team member that finishes gets 3 points, the next team 2 points, and the last team one point. Alternatively, you can award one point to anyone that finishes. This scoring system needs to be established ahead o the game so that there is no confusion as the games are played.

How to Establish Teams

Before the game begins, teams must also be established. You can play as an individual, in pairs, or even in teams.

Individual: For smaller groups of kiddos, individual rounds are best. This gives each player an opportunity to earn their own points and play each 60-second challenge. If any games call for multiple players, you will pair up for that game but each player will be awarded individual points for “winning” the challenge.

Pairs: Groups of 2 to four players are also good with small groups. This means each player will not participate in every game but rather a handful of the 18 back-to-school games. This is also a great way to pair younger kids with an older student or peer. Group members will be working on earning points for their team.

Team: If playing with a bunch of kids, large teams are best for group games. One member of the team will be selected for a challenge each round. If desired, you can do the challenge multiple times. Challenges are completed to declare yourself the winning team!

There’s no limit to the ways you can use these fun games so download the printable packet to get started!

More of the Best Games to Play at School

Why are fun classroom games great for kids? Playing games releases endorphins aka happiness and thrill. When these endorphins are released, it’s a great time for connection with peers, friends, and new classmates. That makes the beginning of the year a perfect time for establishing relationships and teamwork through fun icebreakers. In addition, parents and educators can use holiday games for each new season to reconnect with brain breaks during those mid-year lulls.

Start the school year with some excitement. Enjoy these other kids’ games including back-to-school bingo, indoor games, games for a bunch of kids, and games perfect for a small family game night! A sweet sixteen party can be as simple or as lavish as you want it to be—the key is to make sure that your teenager feels like the star of the show on her big day.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Pick out the Decorations

Your teenager’s Sweet Sixteen is a big deal, so you want the decorations to reflect that. You can go with a simple theme like “16 and Fabulous” or get more specific with a Hollywood or Masquerade party theme.

Sweet 16 birthday party themes can include…

  • White Themed Party
  • Sleepover Birthday Party
  • Spa Themed Party
  • Hollywood Birthday
  • Mardi Gras Birthday
  • Backyard Movie Night
  • Costume Party
  • Winter Wonderland Party
  • Masquerade Party
  • Glow in the Dark Party

Whatever you choose, be sure to incorporate your teenager’s favorite colors, things and style into the décor.

Choose the Food to Prepare or Order

For a Sweet Sixteen party, you’ll want to serve foods that are age-appropriate and will please a variety of palates. Consider adding some of the celebrant’s favorite foods. Fingers foods are great as you only touch what is picked-up. A dessert table or candy table is a must for teens!

Some basic food ideas include…

  • Pizza
  • Slider Burgers
  • Popcorn
  • Candy Station

Don’t forget to have fun and that means serving food that is also fun!

Choose a Location

The location of the birthday bash is important. You want it to be big enough to accommodate all the guests, but not so big that it feels empty. A house backyard or apartment is usually a good choice, but you can also rent out a community center or banquet hall.
