What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Rudolph Family Elf on the Shelf Idea

Do this idea because it will make you laugh every time you look at the photo (and you will have a picture, because capturing this memory in your Timehop is inevitable!) Enjoy that forever photo!

Elf turned the entire family into Rudolph. We picked up Googly Eyes from Michaels and Red Pom Pom Noses from Michaels. They had smaller wiggly eyes but I liked how it make the eyes look large and buggish. I had poster putty to hold up the facial features.

After Elf was gone, I took everyone’s disguise off except for my second daughters. She often doesn’t pay attention to detail sin the home, details in general, and it stayed for a couple days while the rest of the family enjoyed the chuckle. She has such great humor that she let us keep it up longer! It makes me giggle when I walk by. If you have a child that is good with such humor too, consider leaving it up. Enjoy the laughter for as long as you can!

Simplistic Wire Holly Wreath Craft for Christmas

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

published date: November 03, 2019
modified datt: November 03,2019

DIY Minimal Christmas Wreath. Tutorial on how to make a simplistic wire Holly Wreath craft for Christmas. A few simple steps and supplies create a beauty farmhouse wreath.

Holly Wreath Craft

We wanted to add our own ideas to last year’s DIY Christmas Wreaths. Because we are pretty pumped about simplistic crafts, this wreath was just that – easy.

Using wire, felt, and pom-poms, create an easy and elegant Christmas Wreath for the door, to hang from Kitchen cabinets to display to adorn a Christmas vignette in your home.

Christmas Wire Wreath Supplies

Just a few simple supplies make this elegant holly wreath.

  • Copper craft wire – 14 or 16 gauge (we used this Copper Wire)
  • Craft pliers (this pack of three is highly rated)
  • Felt fabric (we used two sades of green)
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue or hot glue gun
  • Pom poms

You can actually find these red pom poms at the Dollar Store!

Christmas Holly Wreath Directions

You can use 14 gauges or 16 gauge wire to make the wreath base. Determine the size of the wreath and circle the wire 2 to 3 times creating the determined round wreath base. Coil the open ends of the wire around the base band. (Our wreath is about 8 inches across.)

Next, cut small pieces of wires from the same wire bundle. These small wire pieces will be used to create branches around the wire base.

Like the image below, take any one of the wire pieces and coil half of the wire around the base tightly. Keep the other half (more or less than half as you prefer) of the coiled wire facing outside or inside of the round wire base.

Continue to add the small wire pieces to the wire wreath base. Keep the branches relatively close (but not too close) to each other. Spread apart like branches on a bush or tree.

Personalize your wreath: You can coil and fill the whole wreath base with the small wire branches or you can fill one fourth of the base like I did.

Next, we chose two different shades of green colored felt fabrics (or you can chose one color if you want to). Trace small leaf shapes on the selected felts and cut them out nicely.

If using hot glue, prepare the hot glue gun. Take a felt leaf cutout and attach it with a small wire branch on its outer edge by gluing any one of the open ends of the leaf. Glue half of the leaf with the wire branch, keeping the other half intact.

Continue to glue felt leaves with the wire branches.

Once the open ends of the wire branches are filled take the remaining felt leaves and slightly fold the half of the leaves along the middle line. This is to give the leaves a cute 3-D look. Apply glue along the fold to secure it.

Now attach the half folded leaves between the previously glued leaves on the wire base. Try filling the wire branches.

Done attaching the leaves? Finally, select some red or white pompoms and attach them on the leaves.

Display and enjoy!

Our Pinterest community and I would love to see how this worked out for you. Share your final Wire Wreath Craft craft.  Leave a comment and/or add a photo here on Pinterest!

Turkey Sugar Cookies (Pin it to Pinterest)

This recipe is the most simplistic. Make the attached sugar cookie recipe or grab a pre-made store brand. Use icing as glue and create decadent feathers with candy corn.

Turkey Nutter Butter Cookies (Pin it to Pinterest)

The most popular Thanksgiving Food Craft, the flexibility of this food craft is nice. How much you want to go with this cookie is up to you. You can have a stand up turkey or a lay down turkey instead.  Add left over Halloween candy to spruce up the design or keep it simplistic with icing and candy corn.

Rolo Pilgram Hats (Pin it to Pinterest)

On the show we made these with chocolate peanut butter cups but you can also do with caramel cups. Pick up store bought frosted fudge cookies and glue on the top of the hat to make the perfect little snack for your little Pilgrim.

Chocolate Covered Oreo Turkeys (Pin it to Pinterest)

This turkey craft is likely for experienced and steady of hands baker. Mix colors and create bright feathers on your Oreo Turkey using a pretzel as a template. Again, how little or how much of the activity and design you want to do is up to you.

A hostess will love these ideas for how to make your house smell good including our Holiday Rosemary Wreath Craft and Christmas Scents Essential Oils Blends.

Holiday Rosemary Wreath Craft

This Holiday Rosemary Wreath Craft is something that can be done in a matter of minutes. It can be done with small hands (by the help of mom) or as a DIY Christmas gift creating a creative way to make your house smell good this Christmas season.

How to Make Your House Smell Good

When our house was on the market in Florida, I got accused of having too many plugins in my home. I was told that it looked liked it masked a foul scent in the home (though that was not true.) I just love a scented home. In fact, scents take me to times and palces all the time, so I gravitate toward them for the rush of a deja vu moment.

There are many ways to make your house smell good. You can spent money on plug-ins, like I did when my house was on the market or you can adapt some of these Fresh smelling home tips.

First, a Holiday Simmer Pot. We shared this one with you last week. It’s great for when you are hosting and want the home to have an inviting smell.

Next, look at our Spring Cleaning Tips and Hacks. It doesn’t have to be spring to adapt some of these ideas. One idea I love is Pine-Sol in the toilet.

Of course, There are also Essential Oils. You can add a drop of essential oils to already existing potpourri, pine cones, or other absorbent items in your home or you can use an Essential Oil Diffuser and let the scent float into the air while it warms.

Of course, you can Hang fresh herbs. Herbal wreaths give a pleasant aroma. We our Holiday Rosemary Wreath Craft. We shaped Popsicle sticks into a star/snowflake and hung using a beautiful buffalo check ribbon. Supplies and directions listed below.

Christmas Scents Essential Oils Blends

Christmas Scents Essential Oils

If using Essential Oils in your home, take a look at some of our Christmas Scents Essential Oils. You can blend scents or use them independently. Consider yourself needing cinnamon essential oil. They make up most of the holiday blends.

A few Essential Oil Christmas Scents include…

Candy Cane Essential Oil Blend

  • 4 drops of wintergreen essential oil
  • 2 drops of cinnamon essential oil

Christmas Tree Essential Oil Blend

  • 3 drops of balsam fir essential oil
  • 3 drops of cedarwood essential oil
  • 2 drops of pine essential oil

Gingerbread House Essential Oil Blend

  • 2 drops of clove essential oil
  • 1 drop of cinnamon essential oil

Eggnog Essential Oil Blend

First, glue the ends of 8 Crafts sticks together to look like a star/snowflake. Make sure they are evenly spaced.

In between every two sticks should be shaped like a “V”, glue two craft stick on top of every “V” to look like an inside down “V”.

Mix a tablespoon of white paint with a tablespoon of water to make it into a white wash.

Whitewash the star with a paint brush and your white whitewash paint and let dry.

Measure your rosemary to your craft sticks and cut to the size you need for each craft stick.

Carefully hot glue on rosemary spring to each craft stick and let dry.

Cut a 12” piece of ribbon, wrap around one star point and tie the ribbon.

Hang your Rosemary wreath inside so you can smell it all day.
