What is Elf on the Shelf?

What is Elf on the Shelf? This is Elf on the Shelf Explained in one minute.  Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. This holiday tradition has an Elf on the Shelf book and a Scout Elf doll. The Scout Elf book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits.

While Elf on the Shelf lives at the North Pole, he begins visiting families every Christmas season checking on naughty or nice behavior of children. The Elf on the Shelf first visits each Thanksgiving. Each family is able to name their special elf.  Each evening, Scot Elf returns from the North Pole to report to Santa on a family’s behavior. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. You must find him!

It is important VERY IMPORTANT, you do not touch The Elf on the Shelf or her/his Christmas magic will be lost! The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve.

Elf on the Shelf Rules

There are a few rules when it comes to adopting an Elf.

Name your Elf on the Shelf

Give your North Pole visitor a name. Look at our 50+ ideas of Elf on the Shelf Names.

Do Not Touch Elf on the Shelf

Elf looses his magic if he is touched by humans. Do not touch Elf on the Shelf. If you need to move Elf (for example, he/she has fallen) use our Magic Elf Grippers to move Elf. Also read about Elf being touched in the In Case of Elftastrophe an Elf on the Shelf Emergency Guide Book.

Elf Moves at Night

No matter what, Elf cannot move when you are watching. Elf on the Shelf moves at night when everyone is asleep. There may be a few occasion when Elf will need to move during the day when the kids are at school. Sometimes Elves fall asleep too. Look at our list of Reasons Elf Did Not Move plus a tip to make sure he/she moves each day.

Elf Cannot Talk

Elf is always listening, but Elf cannot talk. Tell Elf about your day, about your Christmas Wish List. You can even leave notes for Santa with Elf and he/she will deliver them at night to Santa Claus.

Elf Must Return Home at Christmas

Elf must go back to his home in the North Pole at Christmas. Look for a postcard. Elf might send you mail on his vacation or from his home! Typically Elf leaves on Christmas Eve night with Santa on the sleigh. Some elves stay and watch you open presents, returning to their home with magic the next day.

Can parents touch the elf on the shelf?

Frequently it’s asked, can adults touch Elf on the Shelf.   Parents, it’s important to follow the rules of Elf on the Shelf. Elf must never be touched. However, if Elf has an accident or falls, it is important to move Elf from any dangerous spots (for example, the floor where your pet dog might pick it up.) You can use these Magic Elf on the Shelf grippers, so parents can touch and move Elf on the Shelf without actually “touching” the Elf.

Parents may also use a gloved hand OR if Elf must be touched with the skin of a human, Elf should sit out for another 24 hours.

Attention Parents: See the list of frequently asked questions at the Official Elf on the Shelf Page.

This Holiday Rosemary Wreath Craft is something that can be done in a matter of minutes. It can be done with small hands (by the help of mom) or as a DIY Christmas gift creating a creative way to make your house smell good this Christmas season.

How to Make Your House Smell Good

When our house was on the market in Florida, I got accused of having too many plugins in my home. I was told that it looked liked it masked a foul scent in the home (though that was not true.) I just love a scented home. In fact, scents take me to times and palces all the time, so I gravitate toward them for the rush of a deja vu moment.

There are many ways to make your house smell good. You can spent money on plug-ins, like I did when my house was on the market or you can adapt some of these Fresh smelling home tips.

First, a Holiday Simmer Pot. We shared this one with you last week. It’s great for when you are hosting and want the home to have an inviting smell.

Next, look at our Spring Cleaning Tips and Hacks. It doesn’t have to be spring to adapt some of these ideas. One idea I love is Pine-Sol in the toilet.

Of course, There are also Essential Oils. You can add a drop of essential oils to already existing potpourri, pine cones, or other absorbent items in your home or you can use an Essential Oil Diffuser and let the scent float into the air while it warms.

Of course, you can Hang fresh herbs. Herbal wreaths give a pleasant aroma. We our Holiday Rosemary Wreath Craft. We shaped Popsicle sticks into a star/snowflake and hung using a beautiful buffalo check ribbon. Supplies and directions listed below.

Advent Calendar Fillers for Kids

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

June 22, 2021 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Christmas, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Social Media

The family Christmas tradition of Advent, often begins on December 1. These Advent Calendar Fillers for Kids will fill your home with the magical delight of the holiday season as they prepare for the coming of Christ and Christmas.

Advent Calendar Fillers for Kids

An Advent Calendar was something that came late to us in Christmas Traditions.  It was something I did growing up by lighting a Christmas candle and because I was unaware of other types of calendars, it wasn’t a tradition we formed in our own home until my girls adopted it on their own.

What is Advent?

Advent means the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. For Christmas, the season of Advent is the time of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. In Latin, Advent means coming. For Christmas, this is the coming of Christ or the birth of Jesus. Christians use this season of Advent to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas. The birth of Christ.

What is an Advent Calendar?

An Advent Calendar is a popular Christmas Tradition for Families. Typically beginning on December 1st, an Advent calendar is a 24-day calendar used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. The start date of a religious Advent calendar can vary year to year based on the church, but in every day American tradition, the calendar begins on the first day of December.

On each additional day of advent, a box (envelope, bag, present) is opened. There is only one opening a day.  The point of the calendar is not to countdown, but rather to count up towards the days before Christmas. The internet is big on the debate of, do you start with the first number (one) or with the highest number on the calendar. While the entire Advent community is torn, as a family we have started with day one. Think about it like this: if you were using candles for your advent calendar, you’d want to end up with 24 lit candles, not one candle lit.

Homemade Advent Calendar DIY

More and more the tradition of Advent Calendars are beginning to stick. While it used to be hard to find an advent calendar, they can commonly be found online (like Amazon) or in stores like Kohl’s and Target.  We prefer turning this into a Christmas craft with a Homemade Advent Calendar. Take a look at he 25+ ideas we have gathered for your own Homemade Advent Calendar.

Advent Calendar for Adults

While there are plenty of fun advent calendar for adults, we primarily will focus on advent calendars for kids. That being said, we wanted to give our bigger a few ideas to keep your creative juices flowing and unique gift ideas filled. One advent calendar idea for her is always from my favorite beauty store, the Sephora Collection Advent Calendar. We think this one is always a winner. Another advent calendar idea for him is is the Advent Calendar of Beer (fill the box how you want – I bet you can share with him too!)

Friendsgiving

This year might be the first Thanksgiving, in my almost 40 years of life, we are not with family.  In fact, I will spend a good chuck of it flying my girls back and forth from Florida to Virginia, only to not celebrate with them. I am not looking forward to it. This Thanksgiving is our first ever Friendsgiving – time with friends and giving thanks for the “family” we have 1,000 miles away from family by blood.

What is Friendsgiving?

Friendsgiving is not that old. It originated in 2009. It is a celebration of Thanksgiving among friends when you can’t be around family (or chose not to be) for the holidays.

We have the perfect post to get you started – Friendsgiving Thanksgiving Ideas with Friends. Share and Pin to your Thanksgiving Pinterest Board and grab ideas when you gather with friends!

This Fall Simmer Pot Recipe would be perfect for your stovetop if you are hosting!

Fall Simmer Pot Recipe Ingredients

The prep time for this simmer pot is only 5 minutes.

  • 1 orange, cut into chunks
  • 1 apple, cut into chunks
  • 1 sprig rosemary
  • 3 cinnamon sticks (This is a great price per stick!)
  • Water

Another suggestion is to keep the apple whole and press cloves into the apple. The cloves would replace the cinnamon sticks. Amazon also sells cinnamon essential oil and clove essential oil if you would prefer to add oils instead of the actual product. I think the product looks so beautiful so it would be something I would keep, but I wanted to give you the option.

You can use any pot to simmer that holds your ingredients but I fell in love with this discounted cooper simmer pot, isn’t it beautiful!?

Winter ONEderland First Birthday Party Ideas – A Winter Wonderland party in hues of silver, white, pink and blue is perfect for a child with a winter birthday.

Winter ONEderland First Birthday Party Ideas

What is a Winter ONEderland Party?

A winter ONEderland party is a first birthday party with a winter-scape theme. It can incorporate a lumberjack theme for boys or a Nutcracker theme for girls. Or stray from the the theme and crate your own snow filled home full of magic and delight.

Winter Wonderland Party Food

Stick with a color pallet and work on the food from there. We suggest silver, white and either blue or pink. I lean closer to the girls first birthday parties are pink, blue are blue – but have at it – whatever color you choose.

When picking  the theme, it’s important to have food that matches the colors.  Sugar cookies with food coloring mixed with royal frosting can go with every color pallet.   Every party goer will have their inner child come out with Clear Rock Candy Sticks. Snowballs can be made with white powdered sugar donut holes. Additionally, white powdered sugar donuts with shots of milk are a sweet treat.

To counter the sweet, don’t forget to add the salt. Sea salt can be added to many sweet treats and look like crystals.  Cheese and popcorn can be a good balance. Carrots can be snowmen noses.  Consider telling your invited guests, that this is a dessert party and have them eat lunch or dinner ahead.

Where drinks are concerned, have a place marker labeled “melted snow flakes” for your water table. For another drink option, add a hot cocoa bar. You could also look at our S’mores Recipes for ideas on this winter tablescape. For mix-ins, add bowls of marshmallows, whip cream, cinnamon sticks, and white chocolate spoons.

First Birthday Party Present Ideas

Sensory toys are great for this age group. They are just coming into the age of discovering with their hands and being able to hold and explore and option.

First Birthday Toys Include:

  • Sensory Blocks
  • Sensory Balls
  • Touch and Feel Puzzles
  • Board Books (This one is the best!)
  • Activity Center
