Six Awesome Ways to Do Water Play with Kids this Summer
Pin to Pinterest

We’re just a weeks into a long summer and you want to make sure you have plenty of ammo in your mommy arsenal to keep the kids busy! It’s a great time to be outdoors but oh so hot. Try some of these fun, and simple activities to keep kids cool and in the fresh air. With the exception of just a few items most of these supplies should be laying around your house or garage.

Bottle Sprinkler – Poke a clean 2 liter bottle with holes all around. Attach a male to male adapter that you can pick up at your local home improvement store for just a couple bucks. Connect your water hose. Drape the hose over a branch, turn on water. You now have now completed a homemade, recycled (pat yourself on the back here) and easy peasy project.

Ice-cavating – Use a butter tub, or other disposable small plastic container. Drop several of your child’s favorite plastic toys in, fill to 1” from top with water. (Speaking of toys, dinosaurs make a fun archeology dig.) Freeze overnite. A few minutes before you’re ready to go outside and begin pull container from freezer to allow ice block to loosen from the sides. Take ice block outside and lay it in the grass. Give your child spoons, a magnifying glass and a bucket of water with cups for pouring . Encourage your child to experiment with different techniques to melt the ice and free their toys. Older children can be given additional items such as salt, or a mallet. If using a mallet or sharper tools, please keep children closely monitored.

Sponge Balls – Cut standard kitchen sponges into 3 strips, alternating colors-stack the sponges, twist small rubber brand around the middle, then spread the sponges and fluff them out. Give each child a bucket of water for rewetting, and several sponge balls. Don’t forget to stand back!

Water Bag Piñata – Gather a 5 gallon plastic bag (garbage bags can be picked up at Dollar Tree), a rope, a bandana or other blindfold, a stick or broom handle. Fill plastic bag with 1-2 gallons of water, then tie a knot in bag. Tie the rope just below the knot. Blindfold your child, and have an adult drop rope and bag over a limb- you can either tie it so it remains stationary or tease challenge your child by raising and lowering the bag as they swing. It could be fun to fill with new small water toys you picked up at the dollar store.

Sand and Water Table – Make your own sand and water play tables by purchasing some inexpensive bins from Wal-Mart or the Dollar tree. Fill one with sand, and one with water. Provide your child with simple household items like; spoons, cups, sand toys, medicine droppers, funnels, colanders, etc. Besides just being plain old fun this will allow you to sneak in some learning- Measuring, mixing, bouancy, The Scientific Method (hypothesis) and fine motor skills through pouring, and scooping. Won’t you be the clever mama?

Squirt Gun Phonics – Here is another sneaky learning game, you can do this on your driveway, or the side of a wooden fence or shed. Draw random letters, numbers, words, or even shapes for the little ones. Ask your child to “shoot” the letters as you call them out or sound them out. This is also a great muscle building activity to help develop fine motor skills.

Have fun and don’t forget to let yourself get caught up in some of the water fun with your kiddo’s this summer. These sweet memories will linger in their minds long after the school bell rings.

Water games are great for bringing forth the inner kid in everyone. Take a look at these outside water game ideas. These games range from the basic ones for beginners to the elite games for the serious water athlete.

What are some fun water games?

Who doesn’t love a water balloon fight? Break out the inflatables and fill up those kiddie pools, because it’s time to get wet and wild! Let’s get started with the six classic games with water. Check out our favorite outdoor water games for a cooling summertime activity.

Water Balloon Toss

water games water balloon toss

Water balloon games are a must. This classic game is a great way to beat the heat and have some fun with friends. All you need is a group of people and a bunch of water balloons. Form two lines facing each other, and give the first person in each line a balloon.

On the count of three, they’ll toss the balloon to the person across from them. If the balloon pops or someone drops their water bombs, they’re out! Keep going until there’s only one person left in each line, and then the two winners will face off against each other. Now, without a doubt, this is considered fun water games at home!

Sprinkler Races

sprinkler races water games

This is a great game for young kids who love to run around and get wet. The hose is a great resource. Set up a sprinkler in your yard or park, and then have the kids line up at one end. On your go, they’ll race to the other end and back again. The first player to cross the finish line is the winner! You can even make this a team relay race full of challenges and obstacles.

Water Balloon Piñata

water balloon piñata outdoor water game

Pop! This game is a fun twist on the classic piñata. Instead of candy, fill up a water balloon piñata with water and tie it to a tree branch or other high surface like a clothesline. Then, have the kids take turns hitting it with a stick or plastic bat until it bursts open and drenches them with water! This game is must in the great outdoor water games for families list! It’s perfect for a very hot day.

Sponge Relay Races

sponge relay race water agme

Split everyone into teams and line them up at the start line. At the other end of the course, place a bucket filled with water. The first person in each team will dip their sponge into the bucket, run to the other end and wring it out over the next person’s head, then pass the sponge off. In this water relay, the team that finishes first is the winner!

You can twist this game up. Make it a challenge by mixing it up with some bubbles. Use Dawn, bubble bath or Johnson no-tear baby shampoo. Instead of pouring over the next player’s head, be the first team to move the most water from one bucket to the next with a sponge toss as the mode of transportation.

Squirt Gun Tag

squirt gun tag water games

This game is a blast for kids of all ages. One person is “it” and has to chase down the other players and tag them with their squirt gun. Once someone is tagged, they’re out. The last person standing is the winner! If you are looking for something with younger kids, this water play is a toddler approved game.

Water Obstacle Course

backyard water obstacle course games

Sprinklers, kiddie pools, and slip and slides can bring together one amazing obstacle course with water. Introduce as much water as you want with running sprinklers, hoses, water guns and more. You can time this DIY water course or just make it a fun challenge to master.

Best Outdoor Water Games for Kids

Here are a few of the splash-tastic water games included in this set:

Water Balloon Toss

Supplies: Water Balloons

You know the drill. Toss the water balloon until it drops – splash! See which pair can continue to get the farthest apart from one another, without dropping the water balloon, to be declared the winner!

Pass the Water

Supplies: Buckets, Water, Plastic Cups

Get ready to get soaked with this exciting team competition game. Be the first team with the most water in your bucket and you win! All you need is water, enough plastic cups for each player, and two buckets.

Spray Off

Supplies: Balloons, Buckets, Squirt Bottles

Think you can control your balloon with a squirt of a water bottle? Show off your skills by guiding your balloon through the air and into the waiting trash can before your opponent does. All it takes for this game are two trash bins or storage buckets, balloons, and two squirt bottles.

Puddle Jumper

Supplies: Ping-Pong Balls, Water, Cups

This is a game of skill that puts your lungs to the test as you blow your ping pong ball from one cup of water to the next. Clear all the cups before the other team does and your team will be declared the winners!

Frozen T-Shirt Relay

Supplies: Frozen T-shirts

This game is a classic, classic as in it was played in the 80s (and maybe even before.) Freeze a wet t-shirt and each team must unravel that frozen t-shirt and get it over their head in… you guessed it, 60 seconds!
