Hosting a Unicorn Birthday Party? Swoon over these whimsical Unicorn Party Favors. They are not only easy but adorable and cute for any unicorn lover!

Unicorn Party Favors

Unicorn Party Favors

We were helping a friend come up with some ideas for her unicorn themed party and had to share with you this party favor idea. You can have the kids make it at the party for a fun little craft during the celebration or you can pre-make them ahead and send them home as party favors with the kids! They really are fun to make and require only a little assistance from adults!

We pre-bought candy, but another fun idea is to pick up a unicorn pinata and when children collect the candy from the pinata they can make this fun unicorn treat! I think Salt Water Taffy would be a fun, light colored candy for the unicorn!

Enjoy!

Yields: 4 Party Favors (multiply as needed)

Unicorn Party Favors Supplies Needed

Supplies:

  •  4 Clear Plastic Cups
  • 4 Clear Disposable Piping Bags
  • 1 pkg. Multi-Color Paper Confetti
  • 1 Bag Mini Fun Mallows Marshmallows—fruit flavored
  • Pastel-Colored Candies (I used Sixlets, Taffy, and Lifesavers. Salt Water Taffy is fun too!)
  • Pink Cardstock or Construction Paper
  • 4 Bag Ties
  • Curling Ribbon
  • Tape
  • Black Permanent Marker

Unicorn Party Favors In Process

Directions:

  1. Fill each clear piping bag with marshmallows about halfway up. Tie them closed with the bag ties and cut off the top of each bag above the ties. These are the unicorn horns.
  2. Use the pink paper, and cut out 8 little pink ears, about 2 inches tall.
  3. Cut 8 pieces of the curling ribbon, 6 inches long. Tape the ends of 2 ribbons together to a piece of candy. Curl the ribbons with scissors.
  4. Put a little confetti into each cup and put a unicorn horn in them with the points of the bags pointed up. Hold onto the horns so they stay up straight while you fill the cups with candy. This will hold the horns up.
  5. Tape 2 little pink ears on the fronts of each cup at the top and draw 2 eyes under each ear.
  6. Place the candy with the taped-on curling ribbons right on top of the cup in front of the horn. Have the curling ribbon hang down right between the ears, so it looks like a horse’s mane hanging down.
  7.  These cute unicorns would be fun at any party!

Top 5 Pinterest Pins for May 2018

Often I see a different perspective of Frugal Coupon Living than the average reader. First, I can see what is trending, where traffic is going, and this helps me get a feel for what excites you as a reader. Other times, I navigate blindly through my site and pin what excites me as a woman/mother (for example, one of my upcoming posts is Thomas the Train ideas (coming soon!) in an effort to selfishly plan for my almost two year old’s birthday.) I have done this before when I planned for my (once up on a time) eight year old’s birthday and created a list of ideas for Littlest Pet Shop birthday party theme (Pin to Pinterest).

So in an effort to show you “hey this is popular, did you see it?” I hope to begin a new series of the Top 5 Pins. In this series, each month, I will share with you five of the best performing pins from the previous month. I encourage you to pin them for later to your favorite Pinterest boards and make sure you are following Frugal Coupon Living on Pinterest!

Note: You might notice that Father’s Day was trending in May, though it takes place at the end of June. This is common for Pinterest. After all, you mamas plan ahead, no? (Wink!) Enjoy!

The simplest Character Cake Tutorial. We made an easy Thomas the Train Cake for our train birthday party theme, but this cake can be done with your child’s favorite character including Elmo, Paw Patrol, Dora and more.

Character Cake Tutorial – Easy Thomas the Train Cake

Character Cake Tutorial - Easy Thomas the Train Cake

Have you ever seen a cake at a party and thought they must have spent a fortune, then to find out the hostess made the cake themselves. I am always impressed by people’s talents only to find out that some things just aren’t as impossible as I think. With the dawn of Pinterest, Instagram and more,  creative food crafts are much easier than one would think. We had fun with this Thomas the Train Character Cake*. Using a coloring sheet and some creativity, we made this cake look like a million bucks! Follow our steps with Thomas and make your own character cake to fit your party’s theme.

*In retrospect, I wish I would have done white on the outside instead of blue because it would have made Thomas stand out more!

Thomas the Train Cake Tutorial

Supplies:

  • Baked Cake (any size works, I did 2 9×9 round cakes stacked on each other)
  • Picture of character (the more simple the picture the better!)
  • Printer/copier/scanner – or you could go to an office supply store that has copiers that enlarge or shrink images
  • Frosting – I used the Wilton’s Buttercream Recipe and find that this works best
  • Food Coloring
  • Frosting Bags
  • Frosting Tips – I used either the plain Circle Tip or the Star Tip
  • Scissors
  • Toothpicks

Step by Step Character Cake Tutorial - Thomas the Train

Directions:

  1. First decide what size cake you want to make (see the cheat sheet below to help with sizing.)
  2. Find the image of the character you want (I just Googled ‘Thomas the Train coloring pages’), like I said, and go for simple and easy when choosing!
  3. Print out the image, then resize it according to the size cake you want to make.
  4. You can either do this with a home scanner, or you can go to your local office supply store where they have those capabilities (usually costs under $1.00)
  5. Be sure to have 2 images printed out. You will be cutting one up and using the other one as a reference guide.
  6. After you have baked your cake and its cooled and your frosting is prepared, divide up the frosting and add the food coloring according to your character’s colors.
  7. Place colored frosting in frosting bags with tips.
  8. Cut out your image around the border and place on the cake.
  9. Trace with a toothpick.
  10. Pick up image and cut along a different border in the image, working your way inwards, align to the traced edges you just did and trace a little more with the toothpick.
  11. Once you have all your lines traced, use your other image as a guide (because it can get a little confusing just looking at all the lines and trying to figure out what is what), and start filling in with colored frosting!
  12. I used the simple dot method to fill in and find this the easiest and most effective way.
  13. Slice and enjoy!

More What to Read this Summer from $9.04

Like the books we shared with you yesterday and want other fantastic books to read this summer on the cheap? We have More What to Read this Summer from $9.04!

All the Light We Cannot See tells the story of a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. This book is on sale for $10.20.

In her powerful novel Orphan Train, author Christina Baker Kline tells the story of Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer who is close to aging out of the foster system. Helping an elderly woman named Vivian clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvenile hall. Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life—answers that will ultimately free them both. Get this book for $9.27.

If you love books by Liane Moriarty, you’ll want to pick up The Husband’s Secret. This books is the story of a woman whose husband wrote you a letter to be opened after his death that contained his deepest, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not only the life they built together, but the lives of others as well. But, when she stumbled across that letter, her husband was still very much alive. This description is so intriguing, that this is one book I need to buy, especially since it’s only $9.99.

In 1936, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team – the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers – defied the odds and defeated the German rowing team in the Olympics. The Boys in the Boat tells their story, and you can grab this book for just $12.97.

If you love thrillers, you’ll love Something in the Water. In this book, a couple on their honeymoon in paradise find something in the water while scuba diving, and they must make a dangerous choice: to speak out or to protect their secret. Their decision will trigger a devastating chain of events. Get this book for $16.20.

Louis Zamperini was a delinquent as a child and, as a teenager, channeled his defiance into running. When World War II began, he became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, Zamperini survived against all odds, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead, he faced thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation and enemy aircraft. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Unbroken is his story. This fascinating read will captivate you and is on sale for $9.04.

Fourth of July Recipes

Fourth of July Recipes

Ready for July 4th, Memorial Day, or even Labor Day? One of my favorite traditions during the 4th of July is grilling, cooking, and of course eating all of the tasty food! Whether you are going on a picnic, celebrating at home, or meeting up with some friends, don’t go about your plans empty handed. Scroll through these recipes for the 4th of July and recreate some of these creative and tasty red, white and blue Fourth of July recipes. From tasty cheese boards for the adults to food crafts for kids, there is something for everyone. You can never be too prepared with these 4th of July snacks, cupcakes, and appetizer inspiration! More used to having the traditional grilled options on the 4th of July? We also included a twist on your favorite Independence Day recipes like a classic hamburger and hot dog!

What is a traditional 4th of July meal?

Most Americans enjoy grilled meals on the 4th of July, including hamburgers and hot dogs. These are often accompanied by sides like potato salad, corn on the cob, and more. The great thing about the 4th of July is that there is no “official” meal, so you can experiment with new recipes and ideas year after year!

What is not usually served at a July 4th cookout?

Since July weather is hot, it’s best to avoid hot beverages while you’re celebrating Independence Day. It’s also not typically the time to serve something fancy. In our house, we usually celebrate outside with the kids running around and games being played, so food that’s easy to serve up and eat is always the best option.

Fishing Cupcakes Ingredients

Ingredients*:

  • 8 Prepared Cupcakes, unfrosted
  • 1 Container Aqua Blue Frosting
  • 1 Package Pull N’ Peel Licorice
  • Mini Pretzel Sticks
  • 1 Package Gummy Fish
  • Large Red Gumballs
  • ½ cup White Candy Melts
  • Red Hots Candy Candy

*Yields 8 cupcakes, multiple as needed.

Fishing Cupcakes In Process

Directions:

  1. Frost cupcakes with the blue frosting with a smooth layer. Using a knife or offset spatula, touch the frosted cupcake and gently pull up so it creates a little peak to look like a water wave. Do this all over the top of each cupcake.
  2. Melt the candy melts per package directions and dip each gum ball until half covered. Shake off any excess and set the bobbers white side up on top of each cupcake. Put a red hot on the white chocolate on top of each bobber and let these set about 15 minutes so the chocolate hardens.
  3. Take a half piece of licorice and tie the end on to the end of a pretzel stick. Press the other end of the pretzel into the cupcake so it sticks up in the air and the licorice hangs down like fishing line. Trim the licorice if it is too long. Repeat this for each cupcake.
  4. Place a fish on each cupcake right in front of the licorice fishing line.
  5. These very cute cupcakes would be great for a little fisherman’s party!
