Celebrating the Day of the Dead or Halloween? We have a frugal-friendly Dollar Tree Craft. Learn the steps of How to Make a Sugar Skull with affordable supplies.

How to Make a Sugar Skull

We incorporated the traditional Latin-American Day of the Day into some of our Homemade Halloween Decor. This Halloween craft uses the basic of supplies and you might get away with creating this craft for only $1 if you have some of these supplies on hand!

What is Day of the Day?

The Day of the Dead “Día de los Muertos” is a three day festival commemorating friends and family who have passed away.  It is often a misunderstood holiday  as some attribute it to the American holiday called Halloween.  This Latin American Holiday began with the Aztec Harvest at the end of summer. This multi-day festival is a time to honor loved ones who had gone  before and not to recognize ghosts, goblins, witches or other scary mythological creatures.

The day of the dead celebration takes place October 31 to November 2. Children who have died are represented by skulls and are celebrated on November 1. Larger sugar skulls represent adults, whose celebration takes place on November 2. These dates coincide with the Western Christian holiday All Saints Eve and All Souls’ Day. The Mexican holiday also overlaps with the better known holiday, Halloween on October 31.

What is a Sugar Skull?

A calavera (English translation for skull is a representation of a human head. The term is most often used for edible or decorative skulls made from either sugar or clay. In celebrate of Día de los Muertos, calaveras were crafted. Sugar skulls represent a departed soul, often with the souls name written on the forehead. This too can be replaced with hearts, perhaps a number of hearts to represent the number of souls being honored. Sugar skulls are often adorned with colorful folk artwork. These adornments include hearts, flowers, paisley patterns, and dots.

Halloween Dollar Tree Craft Supplies

For this Halloween craft, we used a plastic skull from The Dollar Tree. It was only $1 (wink!) I also used chalkboard paint I had on hand and chalkboard markers. Hairspray will help keep the chalkboard markers in place once your craft is complete.

Sugar Skull Craft Supplies:

  • 1 Plastic Skull (I got mine from the Dollar Store)
  • Black Chalkboard Paint
  • Chalkboard Fluorescent Markers
  • Optional: Aerosol Hairspray

Sugar Skull Craft Tools:

  • Paintbrush
  • Wax Paper (to protect your table)

Sugar Skull Craft Tips

You can purchase Dollar Tree Skeletons and skulls online. Another option is to check out Michael Crafts Skulls and Halloween Decor.

Another craft option is to use chalkboard makers but to go over that with glow in the dark puffy paint. That will really pop with a black light and a makes fun glow in the dark party decor.

When picking up your Dollar Tree supplies, don’t forget our other Halloween Dollar Store Craft- How to Make a Halloween Wreath Under $10.

How to Make a Sugar Skull

Learning how to make a sugar skull is not that much of a challenge. I used the internet to get inspired including Pinterest and Etsy. Etsy has some cute sugar skull patterns. When creating your pattern, think hearts, circles (dots), flowers and paisley patterns. Always start with your larger patterns.

To get started:

First, paint the plastic skull with the black chalkboard paint. Use the wax paper underneath the skull to protect your table.

Allow paint to dry fully. I would suggest at least a day.

Once dry, begin drawing your designs on the skull with the chalkboard marker of your choice.

To make a faux sugar skull like mine, begin with the eyes. I drew flowers in the sockets.

Next, I moved to the forehead where I drew a flower using hearts.

I outlined the nose with an upside down heart shape. I added birds kissing on the chin.

Finish with larger designs before adding your details. Added details include swirls and dots.

Allow chalkboard marker to dry completely before touching it.

Lastly, if desired, seal the chalkboard marker in place by spraying evenly with hairspray about 6-inches from the skull surface.

Optional: Another idea  is to use chalkboard makers but to go over that with glow in the dark puffy paint. That will really pop with a black light.

52 Week Savings Plan. In one year’s time you could save $2620! This 52 Week Savings challenge is a printable PDF you can download and start following in the new year. Happy savings!

We know this year is coming to an end and we are bringing you all the challenges to clean up your home (with our monthly declutter your home checklist) and now your bank account.

We have a 52 Week Savings Plan! This Printable Challenge PDF is a chart to guide you $2,620. Seriously, what would you do with that money?

52 Weeks of Savings

What is a 52 Week Money Challenge? This 52 Weeks of Savings challenge is an incremental savings plan that will help you save money throughout the year. The idea is simple: start the year off by saving $10 the first week, and then put away an additional amount each week after that for 52 weeks. At the end of the year, you’ll save $2,620!

Looking for ways to save? Follow this 30-Day No Spend Challenge with also lists creative ways to save including free activities to fill your weekend (and week).

52 Week Savings Plan

We offer a 52 week savings plan to save you $2,620. I really encourage you to follow this plan. Don’t skip weeks. Save the amount it says each week.  If saving this much is out of your budget, adjust the plan to save half of what it listed each week. That means if $10 is listed, save $5. Next year, if your budget is not as tight, save the amount listed!

The weeks go in this order. Save $10, save $25, save $50, save $75, save $100. Then you repeat the steps backward. Save $75, save $50, save $25, save $10.  So in 9 weeks, you are only saving $100 once. However, you are saving $10, $25, $50, and $75 twice in that nine week period. Does that make sense?

52 Week Savings Plan Amounts

Save $10: Week 1, Week 9, Week 17, Week 25, Week 33, Week 41, Week 49

Save $25: Week 2, Week 8, Week 10, Week 16, Week 18, Week 24, Week 26, Week 32, Week 34, Week 40, Week 42, Week 48, Week 50

Save $50: Week 3, Week 7, Week 11, Week 15, Week 19, Week 23, Week 27, Week 31, Week 35, Week 39, Week 43, Week 47, Week 51

Save $75: Week 4, Week 6, Week 12, Week 14, Week 20, Week 22, Week 28, Week 30, Week 36, Week 38, Week 44, Week 46, Week 52

Save $100:  Week 5, Week 13, Week 21, Week 29, Week 37, Week 45

How Does that Savings Plan Add Up?

The $10 weeks will save you $70 (7 weeks).

The $25 weeks will save you $325 (13 weeks).

The $50 weeks will save you $650 (13 weeks).

The $75 weeks will save you $975 (13 weeks).

The $100 weeks will save you $600 (6 weeks).

Total is $2620!

Savings Tracker for Kids

Are you a role model for your child when it comes to finances? Do they see you savings money? Do they see you tithing or donating money to charities?

I admit when it comes to money, my husband and I haven’t done a great job being role models. We speak about money. We speak about the cost of things, but they don’t see the behind the scenes. A friend and I talk about this one. She found a lot of importance in putting a check in the offering plate while my husband and I tithed to our church electronically. However, it wasn’t the kids saw us doing. It wasn’t something they could hold or touch or realized the importance (for us) of donating to our church.

The same is true of our savings. Our kids do not see us saving money because it isn’t something they can touch. That is why introducing the 52 Week Savings Plan Challenge was something new and thought provoking to our home. Saving their parents money was of course exciting to the kids but I wanted to introduce saving “their” money, especially for children who get an allowance.

Save money with this month long No Spend Challenge. Download your no spend tracker and get an bonus checklist of No-Spend Weekend Ideas printable. Who is ready to turn their spending habits into saving habits with me?

No Spend Challenge Tracker and Ideas

Did 2020 have anyone reevaluating their spending habits? I am raising my hand.

In 2020, March whipped in so quickly and stayed so long. Then March turned to April, April to May and here we are in June. We actually moved in the middle of the 2020 epidemic and our spending was unable to freeze trying to get a new home in order. We gave ourselves three months with the promise, once June came, we were going on the No Spend Challenge.

So here we are! Who is ready to tackle this 30-day No Spend Challenge with me? In addition to the 30 Day Challenge Checklist, I also have list of no spend challenge ideas for the weekend. Distractions to keep you from pulling out your wallet.

No Spend Challenge PDF and No Spend Challenge Ideas

No Spend Ideas

Does not spending money sound, well, challenge? It does for me. Honestly, it brings me anxiety. The second the word “no-spend” is spoken, I begin the “what if” pattern in my head. What if I need xyz; what if we need xyz; what if I can’t do this? As the primary spender for them home, I decided to take this 30 days at a time. As a family of seven, we decided this challenge did not include groceries, essentials, medical purchases or emergency needs. The challenge only included impulse buys, non-essentials, entertainment, and restaurants.

Weekend No Spend Challenge Ideas

A few free activities to fill your weekend (and week).

  • Visit the Park
  • Make a Goodwill Run (Take our 30-day Declutter Challenge during this time)
  • Host a Potluck Dinner
  • Have a Netflix Movie Night
  • Volunteer
  • Visit the Library
  • Complete a Puzzle
  • Have a Bonfire Night
  • Have a Game Night (See our Family Game Night Ideas)
  • Go Sightseeing In Your Home Town
  • Read a Book
  • Batch Cook Frozen Meals
  • Clean the Car
  • Go Hiking
  • Have a Scavenger Hunt (See our long list of Scavenger Hunt Ideas)
  • Make Paper Kites or Paper Airplanes
  • Learn a New Skill
  • Draw or Paint
  • Camp in your Backyard (See our Camping Hacks and Tips)
  • Have a  Picnic
  • Make Pizza
  • Visit a Free Museum (see our Museum Scavenger Hunt in our Stay-cation Spring Break Ideas)

When this is over, have you set new spending habits? Consider having a spend month (or spend week) with discretionary spend. After this month or week, repeat the process and watch the ability to control impulse buys become a natural habit. I bet you reach some savings goal like filling your savings account, paying down payments on student loans, and/or paying of credit and debit cards.

Winter ONEderland First Birthday Party Ideas – A Winter Wonderland party in hues of silver, white, pink and blue is perfect for a child with a winter birthday.

Winter ONEderland First Birthday Party Ideas

What is a Winter ONEderland Party?

A winter ONEderland party is a first birthday party with a winter-scape theme. It can incorporate a lumberjack theme for boys or a Nutcracker theme for girls. Or stray from the the theme and crate your own snow filled home full of magic and delight.

Winter Wonderland Party Food

Stick with a color pallet and work on the food from there. We suggest silver, white and either blue or pink. I lean closer to the girls first birthday parties are pink, blue are blue – but have at it – whatever color you choose.

When picking  the theme, it’s important to have food that matches the colors.  Sugar cookies with food coloring mixed with royal frosting can go with every color pallet.   Every party goer will have their inner child come out with Clear Rock Candy Sticks. Snowballs can be made with white powdered sugar donut holes. Additionally, white powdered sugar donuts with shots of milk are a sweet treat.

To counter the sweet, don’t forget to add the salt. Sea salt can be added to many sweet treats and look like crystals.  Cheese and popcorn can be a good balance. Carrots can be snowmen noses.  Consider telling your invited guests, that this is a dessert party and have them eat lunch or dinner ahead.

Where drinks are concerned, have a place marker labeled “melted snow flakes” for your water table. For another drink option, add a hot cocoa bar. You could also look at our S’mores Recipes for ideas on this winter tablescape. For mix-ins, add bowls of marshmallows, whip cream, cinnamon sticks, and white chocolate spoons.

First Birthday Party Present Ideas

Sensory toys are great for this age group. They are just coming into the age of discovering with their hands and being able to hold and explore and option.

First Birthday Toys Include:

  • Sensory Blocks
  • Sensory Balls
  • Touch and Feel Puzzles
  • Board Books (This one is the best!)
  • Activity Center
