Kids Garden Journal

How is your summer going? We are doing okay. Since moving from Florida, I am grateful for hot days that still offer cooler evenings. We didn’t get much of that in the south. It was a hot day and night!

Summers in DC have evolved. I want from having very young kids, to elementary aged kids, to very young kids (again!) It has caused me to get creative with activity having a range of ages and desired activities. As my toddler has aged, and his little brothers trail behind him, we have kept to our home. It isn’t for lack of desire to go out, it’s for fear to go out.  Chasing after 18 month old twins is so hard – they split and run different directions. To appease my (almost) 3 year old’s heart, we have tried to find creative toddler crafts and science activities on Pinterest. I am so grateful for Pinterest, anyone else?

If you are trying to busy your little one’s summer bucket list, take a look at this Garden Journal. We suggest grabbing a clip board and a starter gardening kit for kids. Let us know what you plant!

…And mom, if you are not a friend of nature, remember this can be inside too!

I am happy to share printables. When sharing with others, please lead them to my website instead of emailing them the file(s). It takes time, effort and money to put the freebies forth and I earn when you visit. Thanks for visiting and thanks for sharing with others!

I like to order my prints at Staples. It saves on ink and is only a few short miles from my home. I pick-up at the store, but of course you can upload them online and then have them shipped to your home.

Our Pinterest community and I  would love to see how this worked out for you. Share your garden journal.  Leave a comment and/or add a photo here on Pinterest!

Pampers Easy Ups at Sam’s Club

June 27, 2019 by Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living Filed Under: Baby, Coupons

published date: June 27, 2019

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Pampers at Sam’s Club. The opinions and text are all mine.

Three of my five kids are potty trained. Well, almost three. We have been working on one…

Potty training is not like jumping on a bike. Every time that I prepare for a new child entering the field of “child meet potty” I have to prep myself. Yes, you guys, this is just as hard for mom! Additionally, each child is unique. Some are smart (disclosure, all my kids are smart) and some are not as over achieving (I will not mention names.) Also, with all three kids, I have done it at a different age, and that makes all the difference!

With my oldest, I potty trained right before she reached the age of two. She did fine. She is/was a type A personality, but there was some verbal communication that would have been nice for her to have. With my second child, I waited until almost 3 and a half. This was not because she wasn’t ready, it was because I wasn’t ready. Having waited, I can say that she got it the quickest of all my children! With the third, he is 2 and a half. Our nanny was ready so inevitably, he had to be ready too. And he has done great, but mastering the skill of #2 has led to some days of constipation for fear of using the potty.

A few tricks I can share are go all in. The day you decide to do it, take off the diaper and don’t turn back. We normally hang around the home naked for a few days. A lot of juice and we set a timer every 20 minutes. If he/she doesn’t go at 20 minutes, then the new timer is 5 minutes until potty is done and we reset to 20 minutes. Going number two, is a bit more challenging. Begin to look for clues in bowel movement behavior. My boy would hide and begin to hold his bottom with his hand. We did a lot of reading on the potty. Often children are going from standing up to sitting down, so knowing how to use the muscles in a new position takes thought.

Rewards. Rewards vary by family and child. Initially, our reward was an M&M for successful potty trips. Because I am a sucker for this blue eyed, blonde haired boy, he got a truck for a successful number 2 on the toilet. He is a smart boy and really struggled with victory over number two (sometimes your kids who over think, over think on the potty too!) This construction truck was his reward! Other reward systems I have done, have been sticker charts. One potty we owned, sang a song every time my child used the potty (that became quickly old, though!)

One of the hardest areas to master with potty training is night. One suggestion I have, is limit drinks before bed. Have the last drinks about 1 to 2 hours before you put your child down. Have your child empty his/her bladder before they go down for the night. With two of my three children, I would remove them from bed at my bed time (normally around 10 or 11) and carry them to the potty. I would not wake them but would whisper in their ear, go potty. I did this for years!

22 Memorable Prom Tips for the Ultimate Night

Memorable Prom Tips – create the ultimate night with these tips from beauty, to decorations, etiquette, photos, style and more. Make it a night to remember, not to regret!

22 Memorable Prom Tips

Prom night can be one of the most fun and memorable events in your high school career. Make sure, on this night, you are bold and confident. It’s okay to go without a date. It’s okay to go with a date. It’s okay to do the asking, boys don’t always have to ask and why not be in charge of who you want to go to prom with? You can even make it a night to remember with your best girlfriends.

Have fun. Your biggest and best high school memories are going to be small moments. That doesn’t mean this big night can’t have smaller events. You aren’t going to remember the entire night but you will have a set of experiences that you file away and pull up later.  Do that sober and excited on juice, apple juice. Be confident, hold a smile, and when something goes wrong, embrace that moment, laugh, and move on. How you handle each smaller moment determines how the bigger night goes.

Are you worried about prom going off without a hitch? We got you covered!  While hiccups always happen, yes – expect the unexpected – we have tips and tricks to help you have the most memorable prom night.

Make it a night to remember, not to regret!

Keep that hair in place! Hold up that hair with this beauty hack. Spray your bobby pins with hair spray before placing them in your hair. This will help with the hold.

Don’t blow the budget. Save money when it comes to the makeup. Kara Larkin Llifestyle has a great list of professional vs drug store makeup swaps still giving you a million dollar look!

Chicks before…. ah forget it. Take photos with your besties. While a boyfriend or prom date might be temporary, many of the friendships will hold strong through the ages – from college, to weddings, to babies and more. Grab some photos with your best girl friends (without the guy!) Barefoot Blonde has an incredible, editorial friend-shoot for some prom photo inspiration! Photography by Stephanie Sunderland.

Hold them up.  No more pulling up on that strapless bra. A bra strap wrapped around your torso below your strapless bra will help keep your strapless bra in place and free from slipping! Genius. Thanks PureWow!

Don’t blink! Do your eye shadow before doing your foundation. Girl with Glam shows you how to make the most perfect winged eyeliner using tape – who would have guessed?! Practice a few times before the big night!

Talk with your hands. While a mani and pedi are nice, don’t break the bank on expensive acrylic nails. There are so many press on nails like these Ombre Glitter Press-On Nails under $5 from Forever21. There are 24 nails total, so just put a few extra in your purse should you loose one in the evening.

Walk on red; not the red carpet. Get designer looking shoes with red paint shoe bottom coat and restorer. I suggest stretching your shoes (see our tip below) and rubbing sandpaper to the bottoms (to prevent slippage) before painting them!

Get organized. Carry all that you need with help from the Anatomy of a Prom Clutch from My School Outfits. Have a perfume sample, your lipstick, safety pins, and blotting paper sheets!

Big girls don’t cry. Apply two coats of mascara. Layer waterproof mascara on top of your regular formula to make your mascara last longer. Our favorite mascara is L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara.

Dance in comfort. Get fancy with this bedazzled, glittery Converse tutorial from Love Maegan (website down)

Pin it correctly. Ladies, watch this video on how to properly pin a boutonniere from Snippet and Ink.

Pucker up! Go matte with your lipstick. Follow these steps from Beauty Tips for Her for making your lipstick last 8 hours. Powder is the trick!

The night sky. If you are in charge of the decor, a beautiful backdrop is a black felt curtain, string lights and star lanterns. (Source)

Say it with balloons. Grab balloons that announce the year. We love this friend-shoot from Seniorologie; it could be fun with the guys too! You can find numbered foiled balloons here.

Kissable lips. Gently to gently buff away flakes and hydrate lips with an exfoliating lip scrub. Having exfoliated lips will help keep your lipstick on prom night.

Don’t go hungry. Eat something and drink lots of water before going out for prom. If hosting a dinner night, finger food is good for snacking and keeping clothing clean. Consider this Epic Charcuterie and Cheese Board from Skinny Taste. The protein will be great before heading out the door!

Break in your shoes. Make sure to break in your shoes! Take a thick pair of socks, wear your new shoes, and use a hair dryer to blow on the tightest areas. Keep repeating until the shoes fit comfortably! Also rub sand paper on the sole of the shoe to prevent slipping on the dance floor!

Hide your money. Have your hands free and invest in this must have prom accessory: the garter purse. Hide extra money, your credit card, and even your phone!

Stay hydrated. Serve a party punch for the crew to sip while getting ready or taking photos. We love this recipe from Savor Home. Be sure to include a straw to protect lipstick!

Check it and forget it. Waiting until the last minute only ads stress. Take a look at the prom planning tips, from Sarah Jane. A to do list that goes as far as three months out!

Zits suck. Don’t let a pimple mountain ruin your night.  Blushing Basics gives you a step by step tutorial on how to conceal a zit. Don’t pop it, hide it!

Etiquette 101. Don’t shy away or be afraid to eat in front of your date. Going to a fancy dinner for the first time? Here is a diagram with some basic rules of etiquette for your your formal dinning.  Know which fork or spoon to use, which glass to pick up and how to pass the table and salt. (Source)

Glow in the Dark Glowing Volcano Science Experiment

Our Glowing Volcano Science Experiment is much easier than you think using common ingredients found in your household to create a chemical reaction with a product of carbon dioxide. You will never guess the lava ingredients!

Glow in the Dark Glowing Volcano

Kids love science experiments that wow or have some sort of unexpected twist. One of my kid’s favorite science experiments is this fun twist on the classic baking soda and vinegar volcano experiment – the glowing volcano!

It’s super easy to put this five minute science experiment together, and you probably already have everything you need right at home, so no need to run to the store for last minute supplies.

You would never guess the secret ingredient of our lava – a highlighter marker! I mean who would have known!? If you don’t have a highlighter marker, you can also use the inside of a glow stick to make this volcano glow.

As I mentioned, you do need a few supplies but I bet you have everything at home already.

Supplies:

  • Highlighter marker
  • Scissors
  • Small jar or bottle
  • Playdough
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Glitter
  • Dish soap
  • Flashlight or black light

If you do not have a highlighter, we used orange and pink, then you can use glow sticks – just carefully break them open.

Nothing in this experiment is difficult but we do recommend adult supervision as you are working with ingredients that would not be good for ingestion.

Volcano Steps and Directions:

You will want a jar for your volcano base. Wrap the jar or bottle with playdough to make the shape of the volcano. The color of the playdough isn’t very important, though brown playdough is sort of fun for this activity! Make the base of the volcano wider than the top to make it look more like a volcano.

Cut the highlighter marker open and remove the ink pad from inside. Cut the ink pad open.

Pour about ½ a cup of vinegar into a small bowl or another jar. Place the highlighter ink pad into the jar and squeeze it to remove all of the dye. It’s not a bad idea to have gloves on during this process.

Add a few drops of dish soap to the vinegar. Add some glitter to the jar and stir.  You can see what our bowl of lava ingredients looks like below.

Pour a small amount of the vinegar liquid into the volcano jar.

This is a good time to dim the lights or move the volcano to a dark room. The closest isn’t a bad place.

Turn on your black light or flashlight. A black light is best but either will do.

Scoop a small amount of baking soda and add it to the volcano to make it react. Watch it glow!

Did you know? Once you’re done oohing and awing over the glowing volcano, talk a little about the reaction making the volcano erupt. The reaction between the vinegar (dilute acetic acid) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) generates carbon dioxide gas. It’s the carbon dioxide releasing from the chemical reaction that causes the volcano to fizz, and when you add dish soap, the bubbles stick around just a bit longer! The ingredients from the highlighter marker react with the light, causing the volcano to glow.

Our Glowing Volcano Science Experiment is much easier than you think using common ingredients found in your household. Can you guess the lava ingredients? #FrugalCouponLiving #Volcano #ScienceExperiment Click to Tweet

Add these Items to your Baby Registry

Are you expecting a baby? If this is your first, you probably are overwhelmed and have no idea exactly what you need and what you can do without. Even if you already have a kiddo, there could be some new items on the market that you’re not sure if you need. We’ve got you covered! You’re going to want to make sure you Add these Items to your Baby Registry.

Not expecting a baby but know someone who is? This is a great guide to see what your friends will need for their baby showers!

This Skip Hop Moby Bath Tear-Free Waterfall Rinser Bath Cup is a necessity. I used this with all 5 kids, and it made rinsing the shampoo out of their hair much easier. You can use it to rinse your little ones’ bodies, too!

This Safety 1st Easy Grip Brush And Comb Set with Sleep Baby Nail Clipper Set is another thing I’m glad I had. The soft brush is made just for babies’ heads, and the nail clippers are a must to keep your baby’s nails short so they don’t scratch up their faces.

OK…I know this is one that will weird you all out, but you have to trust me on this! The NoseFrida Snotsucker Baby Nasal Aspirator looks really gross, but it works amazingly to clear out clogged up little noses. There is a block in the tube to prevent the snot from going into your mouth, so it’s really not as a gross as it looks. This works SO much better than the nasal aspirator balls, and everyone I know who has this LOVES it!

This sleepsuit is something I couldn’t live without with my babies. You start using the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit when your baby is around 3 months old, and it helps transition from the swaddle babies are used to to sleeping in just a sleeper. The Magic Sleepsuit is designed for back sleeping and helps establish good sleep habits and patterns.

If you like to get your sleep (who doesn’t?!), this will be your Baby Bible. The book On Becoming Babywise helps you naturally synchronizing your baby’s feeding time, waketime and nighttime sleep cycles, so the whole family can sleep through the night. I used this with all 5 of my kids – including my preemie twins – and it worked perfectly with all of them!

This Sleep, Relax and Focus Sound Machine is another way to help your babies sleep well at night. It has 10 different sounds that soothes infants and parents, improve concentration, create confidential conversation and block inside or outside undesirable noise.

Make sure you Add these Items to your Baby Registry!
