What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD

Online you can find ENDLESS Elf on the Shelf Accessories, Books, Games and Toys.

Free EOS Printables Gift Ideas

Download these free EOS printables. Gift ideas for all seasons and reasons. This Evolution of Smooth lip balm ads a cute small but thoughtful gift to these punny printables.

Free EOS Printables Gift Ideas

I always get warm fuzzies when  think if EOS lip balms. In 2017, we spent much of Christmas day in the hospital. I had one of the twins in the NICU from an early deliver and another 3 day old at home. In addition to two young newborns, I had three older kids. Our hospital did something cool. Santa came and gave donated presents to the kids. The kids could choose from his workshop what they wanted. My daughter chose an EOS lip balm set of 6. It was a pretty nice gift, about $25. I remember feeling exhausted but filled with warmth in my heart for whoever mad this kind donation. So unnecessary, but such a sweet way for the kids to feel the joy of the season in the cold walls of a hospital.

There are a lot of EOS printables you can pay for, but since this is Frugal Coupon Living, we found you Free EOS printables – Enjoy all these seasonal gift ideas for everyone on your list!

I recommend you buy EOS in bulk. Near the register at the grocery store or pharmacy, they can cost a little more. If buying 25 for an entire classroom of kids, the price can add up. Look for seasonal sets that might be on sale or buy EOS in larger quantities. I think the lowest cost I have seen for an individual package is $2.99, but they average closer to $4.99.

Happy printing. Happy gifting!

How to Make An Easy Marshmallow Shooter

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

This July Fourth, make sure to add this Easy Marshmallow Shooter to your list of activities for the kids. This DIY Marshmallow Launcher combines a cup, a balloon and many laughs.

Easy Marshmallow Shooter

Marshmallow Shooters

For obvious reasons, the Fourth of July is always big in our home location of Washington, D.C. Since having the younger kids, however, we do not always get out together in the evening for the big fire works. One of us goes leaving the other home with the kids. It’s a balance as finding a babysitter on July 4th isn’t really an option.  Every time it is my turn to get out with the kids, I get tears in my eyes. Nothing makes you more patriotic than watching fireworks with the National Monument(s) in the background. The years that I stay home with the younger kids, however, the warm feeling of the holiday disappears. It’s just another “day.” To involve the younger kids this year, and still have some holiday fun at home, we created these Marshmallows Shooters.

Add this to your list of Summer Bucket Items and Upcycled Crafts. All it takes is a toilet paper roll, scrap paper and a balloon. Of course you will need marshmallows, use the extra marshmallows to create these Seasonal Rice Krispies Treats.

Marshmallow Launcher Supplies:

  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Scrapbook paper (we used red and white stripe)
  • Balloons (we used blue)
  • Rubber bands
  • Glue stick
  • Marshmallows

Each toilet paper roll and balloon makes one shooter.

DIY Easy Marshmallow Shooters

To create these shooters honestly takes a matter of minutes. The hardest part is getting the perfect cut of scrap paper and gluing it on the toilet paper roll!

Easy Marshmallow Shooter Directions:

First, cut the striped scrapbook paper to fit around the toilet paper roll and glue into place.

Tie a knot in the bottom of a balloon (not inflated).

Next, cut off the top (round part) off the balloon.

Wrap the open end of the balloon around the bottom of the toilet paper roll and secure with a rubber band.

To use, place a marshmallow in the shooter and pull the knotted end back. Let go of the balloon to shoot the marshmallow out.

Our Pinterest community and I  would love to see how this worked out for you. Share your final craft.  Leave a comment and/or add a photo here on Pinterest!

Toy Story from Frugal Coupon Living

It all started with the twins Toy Story Buzz and Woody Pajamas. From there the evolution of Hamm, Slinky Dog, Jessie, and Alien.  Alien Costume was purchased here. For the slinky dog, we bought dog ears, tail, a dog nose and paws. I also purchased brown pants and a brown shirt.  We wrapped a jump rope in aluminum foil for the slinky. For Hamm, we purchased pink pants, had a pink shirt, and purchased a pig kit with nose, tails and ears. My husband wore a Toy Story Shirt. I wore a Jessie shirt and purchased a cheap red cowgirl hat. I bought this bandanna kit earlier in the year for other reasons.

Glow in the Dark Glowing Volcano Science Experiment

Our Glowing Volcano Science Experiment is much easier than you think using common ingredients found in your household to create a chemical reaction with a product of carbon dioxide. You will never guess the lava ingredients!

Glow in the Dark Glowing Volcano

Kids love science experiments that wow or have some sort of unexpected twist. One of my kid’s favorite science experiments is this fun twist on the classic baking soda and vinegar volcano experiment – the glowing volcano!

It’s super easy to put this five minute science experiment together, and you probably already have everything you need right at home, so no need to run to the store for last minute supplies.

You would never guess the secret ingredient of our lava – a highlighter marker! I mean who would have known!? If you don’t have a highlighter marker, you can also use the inside of a glow stick to make this volcano glow.

As I mentioned, you do need a few supplies but I bet you have everything at home already.

Supplies:

  • Highlighter marker
  • Scissors
  • Small jar or bottle
  • Playdough
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Glitter
  • Dish soap
  • Flashlight or black light

If you do not have a highlighter, we used orange and pink, then you can use glow sticks – just carefully break them open.

Nothing in this experiment is difficult but we do recommend adult supervision as you are working with ingredients that would not be good for ingestion.

Volcano Steps and Directions:

You will want a jar for your volcano base. Wrap the jar or bottle with playdough to make the shape of the volcano. The color of the playdough isn’t very important, though brown playdough is sort of fun for this activity! Make the base of the volcano wider than the top to make it look more like a volcano.

Cut the highlighter marker open and remove the ink pad from inside. Cut the ink pad open.

Pour about ½ a cup of vinegar into a small bowl or another jar. Place the highlighter ink pad into the jar and squeeze it to remove all of the dye. It’s not a bad idea to have gloves on during this process.

Add a few drops of dish soap to the vinegar. Add some glitter to the jar and stir.  You can see what our bowl of lava ingredients looks like below.

Pour a small amount of the vinegar liquid into the volcano jar.

This is a good time to dim the lights or move the volcano to a dark room. The closest isn’t a bad place.

Turn on your black light or flashlight. A black light is best but either will do.

Scoop a small amount of baking soda and add it to the volcano to make it react. Watch it glow!

Did you know? Once you’re done oohing and awing over the glowing volcano, talk a little about the reaction making the volcano erupt. The reaction between the vinegar (dilute acetic acid) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) generates carbon dioxide gas. It’s the carbon dioxide releasing from the chemical reaction that causes the volcano to fizz, and when you add dish soap, the bubbles stick around just a bit longer! The ingredients from the highlighter marker react with the light, causing the volcano to glow.

Our Glowing Volcano Science Experiment is much easier than you think using common ingredients found in your household. Can you guess the lava ingredients? #FrugalCouponLiving #Volcano #ScienceExperiment Click to Tweet

Glow in the dark eggs – a science experiment for kids. Easily create a naked egg through a chemical reaction of dissolving an egg’s shell in vinegar. Make it glow with this added ingredient for extra creativity and fun!

Glow in the Dark Eggs

Glow in the Dark Eggs Science Experiment for Kids

Did you love our 5 Minute Science Experiments for Kids? We wanted to come up with some more ideas for you to enjoy!

At our house, we’re big science lovers. We love making fun science experiments with the kids that aren’t just the basic experiments, but that have a fun twist in some way. We found out that by using a highlighter marker as a dye, you can make the classic rubber egg science experiment glow in the dark!

How does it work? The dye in the highlighter marker is highly reflective, so when you shine a black light or a flashlight on the egg, it glows in the dark! You can also use this experiment to teach kids about osmosis, chemical reactions, and why vinegar dissolves egg shells.

If you don’t have a highlighter marker, you can also use the inside of a glow stick to make the eggs glow.

Glow in the Dark Eggs Science

Glow in the Dark Eggs Supplies:

Not many ingredients are needed in this science experiment. Many of these supplies are probably found in your own home!

  • Eggs
  • Jar
  • Highlighter marker
  • Scissors
  • Vinegar
  • Flashlight or black light

Extend this project! If you have all these ingredients, also try our Glow in the Dark Glowing Volcano Science Experiment!

Vinegar Eggs Science Experiment

Glow in the Dark Eggs Directions:

This process will take a few days but only take a few minutes to prep.

First, fill a jar with vinegar and set aside.

Cut open the highlighter marker and drop the ink pad into the vinegar. Make sure you squeeze the pad to remove all of the ink from the highlighter pad.

Carefully place one or two eggs into the jar. Set the jar on the counter for about 3 days.

Remove the eggs from the jar when bits of shell rise to the top of the jar. Rinse any remaining shell from the eggs.

Next, dry off the eggs and take them into a dark room.

This is the fun part! Shine a black light or flashlight on the eggs to watch them glow. The highlighter ink reacts with the light, making the egg glow!

Once you’re done admiring the egg’s glow, you can pop the egg open to examine the parts of the egg. The squishy membrane, the egg white, and the egg yolk are all clearly visible when these eggs are popped, which makes it a fun lesson in themes including the construction of an egg, osmosis, and chemical reactions.

Glowing Eggs Vinegar Experiment

What Happened?

A shell of an egg  is made up of calcium carbonate. If you soak this egg shell in vinegar, you start a chemical reaction that dissolves the calcium carbonate shell releasing carbon dioxide gas. The egg insides remain intact and are held together by a membrane just inside the shell.

DIY Easter Card Cricut Directions:

First, open Cricut Design Space.

Click on projects and do a search for the Valentine Cricut Card Set (we are using that template to make an Easter card.)

When you find it, click on it and then click the customize button to open it in Design Space.

Duplicate one of the pre-made cards in Design Space by right clicking on it and selecting duplicate.

Now drag the duplicate card template to an empty spot on the mat.

Next, all of the text boxes need duplicated by right clicking on them and dragging them to the appropriate spot on the new card.

Double click on the text to change it to say what you want it to.

Once the text is in place, the next step is to click the image button and choose an image.

Once the image is in the right place, be sure you are still clicked on it so it is highlighted and go to the top of Design Space and look for the Linetype box. Change it from cut to draw. This will change how your image looks.

Once the new card is set up the way you want it, highlight the larger card area and look on the side of the screen where you can see the different layers.

Now you will notice a highlighted grey box, this is your main card. Right above it you will see two text areas under the group heading and the design you chose This is all under a main attach heading.

Highlight all of these sections then go to the bottom and click attach. If you have done this right, the entire card will move where you want it to in Design Space instead of just individual sections of the card.

Make as many cards or different designs as you want repeating the steps above.

When you are done, be sure to click save and name your project.

Now you are ready to click the make it button.

Once the design is opened and ready to make you might notice the cards are spread out over several mats. This is ok.

Place a piece of 12 x 12 white cardstock on the light grip Cricut Mat.

Press the continue button at the bottom of the screen.

The software will look for your Cricut Device and automatically find it.

Now you are going to be asked to choose the material. Click popular and choose either the 60 pound or 80 pound cardstock depending on which you are using.

Once you make your choice, the load tools and mat section will come up. It will tell you to load the Cricut Pen in clamp A and the fine point blade in Clamp C. Be sure to listen for the pen to click in place because if it does not, it will not work. The machine will still work however.

Once this is done, press the load/unload button on your machine to load the Cricut Mat with the paper on it.

As soon as the C on the machine begins to blink, press that button and the machine will begin to draw.

The machine will ask you to change ink colors once the text is done. This is optional. I chose to change the fine point pen to a different color (a brown named tawny).

Let the machine finish drawing the design then it will automatically start to cut the rest of the design. Just let the machine work.

Once the machine is done, the load/unload button will begin flashing. Press it to unload the mat.

Now use the Cricut Spatula to carefully loosen the design from the mat. Doing this keeps it from bending or rolling when you remove the cardstock from the mat.

Finally, once the design is removed, simply add two crayons to each card.

Fill out the to and from areas or let your kids do that.

Now the cards are ready to be given out for Easter. Receivers can use the crayons to color the card!
