Your First UBER Ride is FREE!

What is Uber on Frugal Coupon Living

What is UBER?

What is UBER? UBER App is Powerful Way to Get Where You Need to Be…Cheaper

If you have visited a larger city, or needed to get somewhere without a car, chances are you have hailed (or tried) a cab. With hailing a cab comes frustrations and irritations. Late arrivals, missed signals and ridiculous and unknown pricing can all cause one to second guess getting a taxi in the city. UBER is a smartphone “taxi” app that came along back in 2009 and has slowly been changing the transportation landscape ever since. This idea is a very interesting take on the economic model we pattern our lives around….we buy and sell based on reputation and convenience.

With UBER, you send a signal through an app that you need a ride. That signal is then given to a driver that is nearby (through the wonders of smartphone and satellite technology) and all payment is done via credit card – no cash necessary. The driver picks you up and then takes you to the desired location. This business model, at it’s core, is pretty solid. You do not need to carry cash OR even tip!

How it Works:

1.) Download the app.  Use my Uber promo code, ashleyl4951ue, and get $20 off your first UBER ride.

2.) Request your ride.

3.) Track your driver and their arrival time on your GoogleMaps-like map.

4.) You have your driver’s name and car color and make so you can make sure you get in the right car. They often an UBER sticker on the side of the window. They also have your picture so they will know what you look like.

5.) Place your end location in the app and your driver will get you there. No need to pay (as your credit card info is in the app) or offer a tip.

There are some challenges that UBER has faced over the years, however. One such problem is the safety of the drivers and riders. Because the drivers are vetted to some degree, that is somewhat under control. Drivers MUST PASS background checks and have a constantly monitored driving record that meets certain standards. While not foolproof, it is a fairly solid program to keep riders safe. The flip side of that equation, however, is still somewhat a point of contention. Compared to a taxi, however, there is RECORD of your travel, location and diver leaving a safe history to your whereabouts and who you are with.

Prices are, of course, another important aspect of the program. They implement what is called surge pricing and the model is based on supply and demand. At high traffic times, the pricing goes up. When demand is lower, rides are much cheaper. Compare these prices, though, at all times to a cab. Living in the city (DC), we have found this service to be much cheaper than the alternative. For our family of four, UBER IS EVEN CHEAPER THAN THE METRO!

This is important when selecting a car. There are also many different levels of UBER rides. You can get luxury automobiles, SUV sized vehicles (UBER XL or UBERSUV) and various other types of Uber rides if you are willing to pay for them. The key is to fit the Uber experience to what you are comfortable with. When we have more than 5 people, we always select UBER XL

UBER has carved out one heck of a niche in a powerful market. The company is worth billions and they seem to be expanding all the time. Right now, they are in hundreds of cities across the globe and that number is only going to increase in the coming years. It is the ride of choice for our DC Family of four!

We love UBER…often more affordable than the Metro for larger parties and cheaper than a Taxi. DID YOU KNOW? Your first UBER Ride (up to $20) is FREE?! Go to www.frugalcouponliving.com and search UBER for your code. Grab it now, add it to your app and use later!

You have seen from past posts how much we love homemade gift ideas. There of course is something “frugal” about a DIY gift but more importantly, there is something personal. The fall season is of course a great time to do these crafty things. The activities of the season can be costly and sometimes creating a gift from home not only saves money it can emphasize the importance of the season, spending time with family and creating and presenting a present that required thought and time.

We had fun making these painted plates and mugs with painter makers. While we made them for our family and had a little side fun creating a people food craft we could also eat, they also would be great gift ideas for the grandparents this holiday season!

Painted Plates Craft

Supplies:

  • Painters markers
  • Plain white plates/mugs
  • Newspaper

Directions:

  1. Wipe off each plate or mug surface with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol and let air dry.
  2. Use your markers to draw fun pictures of your family – make sure to date them!
  3. Let your plates completely dry.
  4. Place your plates onto a baking pan and into the oven at 225° for 30 minutes (do not preheat your oven).
  5. Let your plates cool off completely, hand wash well before use.

In our afternoon craft activity we shared some McCain Smiles Fries. They are made with real potatoes and seasoned with sea salt. We added some ketchup for a yummy after-school snack while we crafted. I found the fries in the frozen section at our local grocery store.

mccain-fries-store-frugal-coupon-living-blur-cropped

If you are in a pinch, also check out the McCain 5 Minute Fries, also made with real potatoes but they only take 5 minutes to cook! For dinner, my family enjoyed the McCain Sweet Potato Fries. We served with Italian chicken and Brussels sprouts. Yes, my kids love Brussels sprouts – cut them up, season with salt, pepper and olive oil and toss in the oven for 1 hour at 350 degrees. You can serve either of these on your painted plates, I just suggest hand washing over using the dishwasher.

How does your family celebrate the beginning of fall together?

Although this post is sponsored by Welch’s® Frozen Fruits, all opinions are my own.

Welch’s Blueberry Fusion Muffins

Just the other day I bought blueberries on sale for buy one, get one. When I came home from the store and placed them in the refrigerator, I remember I told my husband that “I should wash and freeze these” but the time just wasn’t there and the thought never crossed my mind again. A week later, I was tossing both containers in the garbage because they had gone bad that quickly! We never got to the muffin recipe I had intended to make for the kids. It felt like such a waste and I was upset with myself or not taking the time to freeze them. What was the point of the sale and purchase if I was just going to end up tossing out the fruit?

This example of waste is one reason I love frozen fruit. Frozen fruit is perfect for baking treats, creating healthy smoothies, many breakfast foods and more! The fruit is also frozen at its freshest point giving you that high quality, perfect taste straight from the bag. I also can use the fruit at the time I choose instead of having to monitor it for refrigerator life and rush to a recipe I am not ready to make.

This past week I gave Welch’s Frozen Fruits a try. My family loves muffins, one of our favorite muffin recipes is a blueberry muffin one that was passed down from my grandmother to my mother and now me. My children love muffins for breakfast, snacks, desserts and in their lunch box. I love that Welch’s Blueberry Fusion flavor is available at any time at my local Mejier store – this means I can make my recipe with the convenience of ingredients in my pantry and berries in my freezer. It upped our family recipe by adding with the blueberries a touch of cherries and mango (from the Welch’s Blueberry Fusion bag) and it came out delicious – simply pure joy in every bite!

welchs-blueberry-fusion-muffins-frugal-coupon-living-meijer-blur

I shopped at my local Meijer. You can see the Welch’s Frozen Fruit 48 oz Blueberry Fusion in the frozen aisle. I found it near the frozen desserts and breakfast items. Right now if you shop at Meijer, Shaw’s, Shoprite, Big Y, Jewel, or Hannaford’s, be sure to take this $1.00 off on Welch’s Frozen Fruit coupon. This coupon is good from October 1st, 2016 to November 30th, 2016. I bet these would be good for some holiday recipes. When shopping, consider these other flavors – Welch’s 48 oz Tropical Blend and Welch’s 48 oz Antioxidant Blend.

How to Buy Everything You Need for Baby on Craigslist

How to Buy Everything You Need for Baby on Craigslist

Baby #3 has been described as our Bargain Baby. With the first I bought everything brand new and by the time I was done with the baby items (after two children) everything still looked brand new and was handed off (often free) in great condition. If you think about how long a baby goes through each milestone, the time isn’t long. Then during that milestone (say the first 3 months), how often is that particular toy/outfit used. It isn’t often! This means, other people like me, have baby items that are like new and need to be removed from their home.

When you think of the word Craigslist, you probably get a little nervous. I have bought baby stuff over the years on Craigslist and I thought it would be a good topic to cover. Buying baby items off Craigslist doesn’t need to be scary as long as you go through the steps wisely and safely.

Search in Your City

The first step to buying everything you need for baby on Craigslist is to search for your city. You can simply type in “Your City Craigslist” right into Google. Your city will pop up. If you don’t have a city on Craigslist, then the closest city near you will pop up. If you are in a big metro area like me (Washington DC) you can ask to narrow down your search by zipcode, this helped me with not having to travel far when looking for baby items. I found one item as close as a few blocks away by using my zip code.

Search for the Baby Item You Want

The cool thing about Craigslist is that so many people are selling their unneeded baby items. There will hardly be a day when you’re looking for something on Craigslist and aren’t able to find it. There is a search bar on CL and you can simply search for what you need. Some baby items I focused on were a stroller, infant tub, bouncer, and baby monitor. Two items I wanted to be brand new were the swing (so the motor would be fresh) and baby bedding – you never know!

Search in Baby/Kids Section

One thing you should note when looking for baby items on CL is to search in the baby kids section. The baby+kid section is found right under “for sale.” Once you click on baby+kid, you’ll see all of the amazing items that are BABY! This is really where you’ll want to use the search function. I also love the way CL has set this up, so it’s super easy to view the items you want.

Only Look at Posts with Pictures

If I’m going to be honest, I only look at baby items that have pictures. You’re sort of wasting your own time if you don’t do the ones with pictures only. Pictures really help you to get a feel for the item and to see if it’s in good shape. You can tell a lot from a picture, so make sure you study is close. Look for stains, rips, tears, and anything else that may look off to it. Before you even meet the person to buy, you can always ask for more pictures of the item. I assume a CL item that has stock photos is in bad condition.

The Price is Right

Most people are buying from CL because they want a good deal. I never buy anything unless it’s going to be a good deal. What’s the point? You can save a TON of money by buying on CL. Some people just don’t want to deal with selling and this is the easiest for them. Remember that you can always negotiate the price too! You have so much power when it comes to buying items second hand. Most people just want it out of their house, so you might as well challenge it. It also is okay to ask for a bargain. I try to take off 10% and ask if they will sell the item for that new price. Often times they accept.

I comparison shopped at baby consignment shops and the price was more. There were two reasons I assumed this was the case. First the consignment shop takes a cut and second the consignment shop won’t barter. Most people do not want to got through the hassle and inconvenience of going through these types of baby stores.

Don’t forget about Facebook Garage Sale Groups

One of my favorite places to supplement finding baby stuff is Facebook Garage Sale Groups. I like to try and find the big stuff on CL, but then I keep an eye out for small stuff on Facebook. You can get items like diapers, wipes, and baby odds and ends for so cheap. Buying baby stuff in the store is kind of pointless, when you can such a better deal by buying on CL or Facebook.

Be Safe

I advise meeting at a public location with a spouse or friend. In my case, I meet people in the early evening when my husband is home from work. He goes with me and we meet someone away from my home. Craigslist can have spam so if it doesn’t feel right, don’t buy it. Go with your instinct. If selling, ask for cash. If buying, ask if they want cash or if a check is acceptable. I do not do money orders – this often is spam. Have a cell phone with you when making your exchange.

What tips would you offer someone buying baby items on Craigslist?
