If you have been watching Oprah in her 25 seasons of shows, chances are you have caught one of the seventeen appearances by the Judds - that is right, 17 times! Known for their country duo vocals, this mother-daughter team are perhaps just as recognized for their comical and dynamic relationship.

I (Ashley Nuzzo at Frugal Coupon Living) had the opportunity to hop on a conference call with Naomi (mother) and Wynonna (daughter) Judd this week. They have a new docu-series, beginning on OWN – the Oprah Winfrey Network, in which they hope to heal old wounds, reconnect with fans, and share in their journey of gracing America with their talent in their 18-city reunion tour. The first tour in 10 years!

Not being your typical media reporter, I wasn’t sure how to prepare for this call or what to expect. I must say that this mother and daughter did not disappoint. Wynonna had me laughing aloud in the corner booth of a Starbucks and Naomi shared with me a few life lessons in just one hour. I must say that our short phone call had me yearning for more of their new docu-series and for more of getting to know my own mother better.

Questions I wanted answered by these lovely ladies:

What do you hope your series will share with viewers?

• The show is about the healing relationship of a mother and daughter as they journey on their first musical tour in 10 years. Nothing is scripted and nothing is fake. Real Life and Real Situations are what you get. Naomi shared, “The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.” Perhaps this is one of many first steps into a deeper relationship of a mother and daughter.  In the conversation, they share “If you don’t call your mother after this show you need therapy!” Their talk definitely had me yearning for my own mother more.

Tell me something positive about your mother/daughter.

• Wynonna describes her mom, Naomi: Amazing work ethic, raw, vulnerable, a real character. She is fully present when engaged with someone. She remembers facts about people and is always asking others how they feel. She is one of the most curious people I have ever known.
• Naomi describes her daughter, Wynonna: Her heart breaks wide open and she is so giving. Giving in the aspect that she often forgets to put herself on the list. Tender hearted. Funniest human being ever! (She speaks of one taping segment where she had to pull out her asthma medication as they were so tickled.) Full of Joy, laughter; she lives in the moment. She is in awe of the depth of her instinctive musical gift.

Tell me your favorite moment while taping.

• While I didn’t get their favorite moment I heard of being real, genuine, true, and moments of “Bend-Over-Double-Belly-Laughs.”

Share one of your favorite money-saving tips.

• Wynonna (who currently has feathers in her hair) shares Rhinestones always help! They go on to speak of accessories and accentuating. Details make the outfit. Even if you own three used dresses (as Naomi once did), making it yours with a flower in your hair, a nice cardigan or the perfect accessory can make you look like  million bucks.

There were also questions I didn’t initially have. However as I grew deeper into their conversation much more flowed than what I prepped for. Beyond having me laughing nearly the entire phone call, Wynonna reminded me of a very important gift to bless your family with – an ability to listen. Naomi went on that one should not assume, but rather speak only for oneself. When they two are engaged in a topic that might be too heavy for one party, their simple code word is “flooding” – meaning I can’t take this all in right now, please give me a moment or longer to think, take time, and then respond.

What get’s me this season?…well you must watch the opening trailer. I LOVE their banter – “Do I have to continue to walk four feet behind you or can I walk with you?”; “She brings out the best and worst in me”; “I just pray this tour is going to allow us to have a deeper understanding of each other.”
