Homemade Furniture Polish

One of the things I love about making my own natural cleaners from Essential Oils is that I can use the same things to clean the floor as I use to make a moisturizer for my skin (did you see our Homemade Wrinkle Cream) – they are that safe AND effective. Another thing I love about my EOs, is they go a long way and keep my costs down. This mix makes an excellent conditioning and restorative furniture polish for wood – I have found this recipe also bring new life to cutting boards and wooden spoons too!

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. Beeswax
  • ½ cup Olive oil
  • 5 drops  Orange Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • Optional: I often add a few drops basil or bergamot for an yummy earthy smell.

Directions:

  1. Place olive oil and beeswax in a small saucepan and heat over medium, stirring frequently until melted.  (If you are interested in making your own home and beauty products from essential oils I suggest you purchase a saucepan just for it.)
  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes then stir in Essential Oils.
  3. Pour into a glass container (citrus oils will eat at plastic), small 4 0z. mason jars are the perfect size for this recipe.

To Use:

Scoop some out, and spread on wooden surface, buff with a soft cloth until most of it is removed. To condition cutting boards and spoons repeat the same process.

DIY Valentine Wreath – Burlap Wreath Tutorial for Under $10

DIY Valentine Wreath

I made this wreath last year for Valentine’s Day and I love it!  It was so easy and very cheap.  I got all of my materials at Hobby Lobby in two separate trips so I was able to use two 40% off coupons.

Supplies:

  • 1 or 2 wire hangars (I used two and wired them together) – FREE
  • 2-3 yards of Red Burlap – $5.98 (use 40% off coupon)
  • Letters ‘X’ and ‘O’ in Chipboard – $2.49 each.  I used a coupon for one so paid $3.49 total.
  • Two sheets of scrapbook paper – $.59 total (on sale for 50% off)
  • Ribbon – already had on hand
  • Mod Podge – already had on hand
  • X-ACTO Knife – already had on hand

burlap-wreath-tutorial

Directions:

  1. Stretch your hangar into a circle or unhook it to put two hangars together.  I just overlapped mine to the desired size.
  2. Lay the fabric out flat and measure 5″ widths and cut.
  3. Begin putting the fabric on the hangar going back and forth until the whole strip is on.  Repeat until the hangar is full.
  4. Twist the hanger back together to close.  I had to get more fabric later because all they had was 1 1/2 yds!   You will want it to be much fuller than this!
  5. To make the letters, lay the scrapbook paper face down and glue the letters on using the Mod Podge.
  6. Once dry, trim the paper around the letters with an X-ACTO knife, then Mod Podge the surface to seal and provide a shine.
  7. Glue the letters together with hot glue and then glue the ribbon onto the back.
  8. Loop over the top of the hangar and add a bow to cover. Ta-da!

Try it and let me know how it turns out!  I plan to make one for Easter too!
