Elf on the Shelf Ideas | Melted Snowman Cookies

We love bringing you new Elf on the Shelf Ideas. We also love sharing Christmas Food Crafts! That being said, we had to combine our two holiday loves into one – Elf on the Shelf Melted Snowman Cookies!

We wanted to make these cookies simple. We used refrigerated sugar cookie dough for our base. This is something to make with your kids, maybe cookies you use for Santa, or make them alone while the kids are in school. We made them alone since our kids still believe in Elf and then hid them that day. In the evening we took them out with a hair dryer as if Elf had melted the cookies. We used a Felt Letter Board to write the phrase – Whoops!

Melted Snowman Cookies Ingredients and Supplies:

  • Refrigerated sugar cookie dough

Frosting Ingredients:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

Decorating Ingredients:

  • Marshmallows
  • 1 cup light cocoa candy melts
  • 1 cup vanilla frosting
  • Orange food coloring
  • Miniature M&M’s

Materials:

  • Baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl

These cookies are fun to make with the kids, but it might be a good idea to make them while they are at school and hide them so that you can make this cute little Elf on the Shelf vignette.

Melted Snowman Cookies Directions:

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

You will want to form the cookie dough into ping pong sized balls, press partially down and place on the baking sheet.

Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

When your cookies are out of the oven, let them cool and mix together your frosting.

To make your frosting, combine your powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup and almond extract until creamy.

Pour your frosting in a decorating bag and cut a small tip off the end. Use the decorating bag to draw a wavy circle on the cookie and fill in with frosting.

In a microwave safe bowl, heat the light cocoa candy melts on 50% power for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until melted and poured into a decorating bag.

Also mix together 1 cup of vanilla frosting with orange food coloring and scoop into a decorating bag.

Use the brown and orange decorating bags to draw a face on the marshmallow.

For the snowman head, place the marshmallow onto the cookie towards the back of the cookie.

You will want buttons! Place two M&M’s onto the cookie in front of the marshmallow.

Use the brown decorating bag to draw stick arms on each side of the marshmallow.

Enjoy your Melted Snowman Cookies!

Homemade Edible Christmas Gifts.  Last minute gift ideas that do more than sit on the shelf, they fill your belly!

Edible Christmas Gifts

Edible Christmas Gifts

We love DIY Christmas Gifts.  However, often waiting to the last minute for gifts puts me in a place of purchasing and often that purchase is something not from the heart. My last minute gifts become, something I like to call, “Shelf Sitters”. Shelf sitters are gifts that take up room and don’t have a reason for use.  I had a lot of these during my years of teaching elementary school.

One of the gifts I always appreciated, especially on busy winter school days, was something that filled my belly during the day. If I was feeling extra nice, those gifts made it home to share with my family.  We found the tastiest recipes, some tried and true, for your Edible Christmas Gifts.  Take a look at these gift ideas that do more than sit on a shelf!

Top 5 Pinterest Pins for May 2018

Often I see a different perspective of Frugal Coupon Living than the average reader. First, I can see what is trending, where traffic is going, and this helps me get a feel for what excites you as a reader. Other times, I navigate blindly through my site and pin what excites me as a woman/mother (for example, one of my upcoming posts is Thomas the Train ideas (coming soon!) in an effort to selfishly plan for my almost two year old’s birthday.) I have done this before when I planned for my (once up on a time) eight year old’s birthday and created a list of ideas for Littlest Pet Shop birthday party theme (Pin to Pinterest).

So in an effort to show you “hey this is popular, did you see it?” I hope to begin a new series of the Top 5 Pins. In this series, each month, I will share with you five of the best performing pins from the previous month. I encourage you to pin them for later to your favorite Pinterest boards and make sure you are following Frugal Coupon Living on Pinterest!

Teacup Mother’s Day Card Craft

Tea Cup Mother's Day Card Craft

Who doesn’t love the chance to celebrate Mom? (And as a mom myself, of course I’m totally unbiased!) Regardless of how much I love having a special day dedicated to moms everywhere, kids get so excited to express their appreciation and love for their moms, too. If your house’s day-to-day activities get as hectic as mine do, you’ll know there’s just not much time typically to stop and say how much we appreciate each other.

I know you all love our Mother’s Day resources as much as I love the holiday — one of our more popular posts is our Mother’s Day Preschool Crafts.  Since you all loved those curated Mother’s Day craft ideas, we wanted to come up with something creative and craft our own Mother’s Day Card Craft! This Teacup Mother’s Day Card Craft is for a tea-rrific mom! I mean, whose mom doesn’t love relaxing with a hot cup of tea? Best of all, it’s simple and easy for the kids to create on their own or with Dad’s supervision. This Mother’s Day Card Craft uses upcycled egg cartons, scrapbook paper, and pipe cleaners. Even with it’s humble supplies, this Mother’s Day card for kids looks so impressive. Mom is sure to appreciate all the crafting work that goes into this special Mother’s Day craft!

Be sure to pick up our favorite tea bags! We think your mom will love them too – they make an amazing gift and perfect accompaniment to this Mother’s Day card craft!

Want to really take the tea theme to the next level on Mother’s Day? Have a Beau-TEA-ful Mother’s Day incorporating some of these Tea Party Ideas! Throw Mom a tea party with beautiful decorations, table settings, and tasty treats to make her day truly special.

Supplies:

  • 1 Cardboard Egg Carton
  • Watercolor Paints
  • 1 Sheet White Cardstock Paper
  • 2 Sheets Patterned or Colored Paper (scrapbook paper)
  • 1 White Pipe Cleaner
  • 2 Pipe Cleaners, any color
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • 2 Tea Bags
  •  Scissors

Directions:

1. First, cut 2 pieces of cardstock about 4”x 6” in size and cut 2 pieces of patterned/colored paper about 3”x 5” in size. We used white card stock and colored scrapbook paper.

2. When you have your paper cut, center each piece of patterned paper on top of each white piece, and glue down on them. These are your two cards.

3. Grab your egg carton. Use the bottom part of the egg carton and cut 2 of the egg holders from the end of the egg carton. Cut off one side of each egg holder, making sure to leave the other 3 sides intact. When you lay it down on the flat cut off side, it will look like a little round cup.

4. Once your teacups are cut, use the watercolors to paint each little egg holder cup any color you choose, we used blue and purple. Let these dry for a few minutes.

5. While your tea cups are drying, cut 2 pieces of the white pipe cleaners each about 3” long. Cut 1 piece each of the colored pipe cleaners about 3” long. Twist a white piece with each colored piece so you now have 2 pieces that looked striped.

6. Make each one into a small handle shape and glue each one to the egg holder cups. I glued one end on the inside top, and the other end to the outside so they look like cup handles.

7. Glue each teacup with the flat cutout side down onto the cards. Put one of the tea bags into each little cup and let the string dangle over it.
