Fig Newtons Easter Bible Cookies

Ingredients:

Fig Newton Cookies
Decorating Icing in a color of your choice
Red or yellow fruit roll ups
Scissors

Directions:

Outline the top of a Fig Newton cookie with a thin rectangle frame of decorator’s icing. This can be in any color that you like, but we prefer white.
Next, make two vertical lines with icing on either end of one side of the cookie. This will make the spine of your Bible.
Draw a cross with icing in the middle of the top of your Fig Newton cookie.
Cut a small rectangle shape from a Fruit Roll Up. Gently push it into the filling on top of the cookie. This will be the top of your bookmark for the Bible.
Cut another rectangle from the Fruit Roll Up, but this time, cut a small triangle out of the bottom edge of it. Gently push this piece into the filling on the bottom of the cookie so that it sticks out slightly. This will be the bottom of the bookmark in your Bible cookie.
Stick the cookies in the fridge or freezer for a bit to let the icing start to harden, or serve immediately.

I am not necessarily a lazy holiday decorator, but I am a pretty frugal decorator, especially when it comes to the seasons. Why? I have a hard time buying new things for the home that are only used for a month or two. Because of this reason, I often look to the internet and Pinterest for help – Thank God for Pinterest! That is why I love these FREE, yes FREE, printables. Pick up these free spring printables to create a pretty accent to your home, your crafts, gifts, tables, and more. Easter eggs and bunnies are fun, but there are other ways to instill Easter traditions with your kids. One of our very popular posts, is Christian Easter Crafts featuring Resurrection Eggs, Gardens, and Rolls. This post has some of the most crafty ways to tell the story of Jesus’s death and Resurrection, each providing the final story of an empty tomb.

To help you prepare for Dr. Seuss Day, we wanted to share this adorable Green Eggs and Ham Dr. Seuss Cupcakes. Made with boxed cake mix and a few simple ingredients, make these cupcakes for kids on March 2.

Green Eggs and Ham Dr. Seuss Cupcakes

“I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-Am!” Whether are Sam-I-Am, Sarah-I-Am, or Whomever-I-Am and love or hate green eggs and ham, we have a fun Dr. Seuss Cupcake for you! This cupcake is an adorable after school snack for Dr. Seuss Day on March 2. Use your favorite vanilla cupcake mix, some green icing and vanilla icing topped with black rope licorice to make these adorable cupcakes!

Enjoy!

Ingredients:

10 to 12 Prepared Cupcakes (6 white and 4 to 6 Green cupcakes)
1 Container White Frosting
1 Container Green Frosting
2 cups (Roughly 4 to 6 cupcakes) Crumbled Green Cake
Black Rope Licorice

Directions:

Prepare vanilla cupcakes according to the package. Make sure a few of your cupcakes are green (use a few drops of green food coloring when mixing the batter.)
Cook according to package directions and cool.
Frost all the white cupcakes with the white frosting in a flat, smooth layer.
Mix the crumbled green cake with a tablespoon or two of green frosting until it comes together so you can scoop it. (Note: When I made my white cupcakes, I tinted 4-6 with green coloring to get my green cake.)
Use a small cookie scoop, a put a rounded scoop of green cake mixture on the center of each cupcake so it looks like a green egg yolk.
Take a piece of licorice rope about the length to make a circle shape on top of a cupcake. Lay a piece on each cupcake in a circular shape around the edge, it will naturally curve and not be a perfect circle. This is what you want it to do, so just press it into the frosting so it lays down. It should look like the edge of an egg.

Upcycled Farmhouse Table with Homade Chalk Paint

So I am a frugal shopper. Before reading this post, that fact should be a given to anyone from my blog title alone. I am someone who will run into Goodwill or the Salvation Army for a piece of furniture. If I lack the time, I also search the Facebook market place for my home wants, and pick it up locally in my area.

In addition to discount furniture shopping, I often find myself having to paint my projects. Often after I purchase, I see they are the wrong color for my space or in desperate need of attention. I am not the biggest fan of painting, but my dislike is outweighed by my desire to save a penny. Speaking of saving a penny, painting can be surprisingly expensive especially when buying chalk paint. I have gotten pints of chalk paint for as much as $40 (and a pint is not much.) I have seen them for as much as $70 – ridiculous! To save more, recently, I discovered Rusty Hippo DIY Chalk Paint Powder. This turns your affordable latex paint into chalk paint!

This paint booster works beautifully with Flat, Eggshell, and Satin paint. Please note semigloss or oil based paint are not recommended.

Mixing Instructions:

1.) Pour Rusty Hippo DIY Chalk Paint Powder into water and stir until smooth.(30 Seconds)
2.) Pour the Powder/Water mixture into Your paint and stir until Smooth. (60 seconds)

BOOM! You’re All Done! That is just under 2 minutes total. Easy Peasy, right?! If only you furniture was done too!

Note: This chalk paint additive can also turn into chalkboard paint, simply double the amount of powder for the same amount of paint.

Back to my Upcycled Farmhouse Table. There are a few ways to prep your old table. Some paints do require sanding before. I know Annie Sloan and most chalk paints do not. On your ever day latex paint, I prefer to sand so that the paint grips. There are two ways to sand prepping your table. 1.) with sand paper or 2.) with a sander. We actually found a DEWALT Sander to be quite inexpensive (especially for the number of times you might use sandpaper in the future) and you feel like a bad-ass sanding your table like a true Fixer Upper pro. Again, this prep work is often optional!

After sanding, dust off the extra dust and mix your latex paint and Rusty Hippo DIY Chalk Paint Powder using directions on the back of the bottle, or what we shared above. Any color latex paint works. We grabbed a pint at Home Depot for about $15. We mixed in our Rusty Hippo Powder to turn our latex paint into chalk paint. Some people prefer to use a round brush for chalk paint, but I have used many type of paint brushes. Just make sure your brush isn’t a cheap brush or your bristles will fall off on your table (project) and stick – In my opinion, this is the worst!

After you paint, let it dry and then plan to sand small touches of the table. I will sand using 200 or 220 grit sandpaper or sand sponge. I personally find the sandpaper easier than the sponge because it can be molded – it can be bent, folded, etc.

When you sand, focus on the edges. You want your piece to look rubbed, older, distressed. Add small sanding touches where the original color of the wood comes through. Step back and look at your piece. You can always add more sanding, but it’s harder to over sand and then have to go back and paint.

After you sand, brush off all all the loose powder and get ready for Waxing. I prefer to wax. This seals the table and protects it. Often it is option, but I say do it! I like to use a clear finishing wax. To apply the wax, I like to use an older t-shirt to put the wax on the table because, unlike a towel, it does not leave behind debris. One coat of wax is fine unless you feel your piece might be mistreated along the way – for example you have young kids or you are working a table where every one sits at multiple times a day to eat. Once you are waxed, your product is finished! You are officially a paint and wax pro! Great work Joanna Gaines (…or Chip Gaines!)

Hosting a Dr. Seuss Party? Ready for Dr. Seuss Day on March 2nd? Whatever the special occasion, we all love the classic The Cat in the Hat. Celebrate Dr. Seuss with one of your favorite characters in Rice Krispie Treat form! No one can mistake that red and white hat filled with mischief and fun! Make Dr. Seuss Day memorable with a tray of these at a party or even an after-school snack with friends! They’re so easy to make, let the kids join in the fun of stirring and decorating!

Ingredients:

Ingredients for Rice Krispies:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
Two 10 oz. bags of mini marshmallows
10 cups Rice Krispies cereal
1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional)

Ingredients for Dr Seuss Rice Krispies:

2 T solid shortening
3/4 cup Wilton white chocolate melts

Directions:

Directions for Rice Krispies:

Spray a 9 x 9 pan with Pam and set aside.
In a large sauce pan, melt the butter over low heat.
Add the marshmallows to the melted butter, stirring constantly.
Once the marshmallows are melted, remove from the heat and stir in the cereal and optional salt until well-coated.
Using a rubber spatula (spray with Pam for easier handling), transfer the cereal mixture to the prepared pan and press down firmly and evenly.
Allow the Rice Krispies to cool in the pan completely.

Assembly Directions for Dr. Seuss Treats:

Line a baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. Set aside.
Cut the prepared Rice Krispies (from recipe above) into 6 even long rectangles.
In a medium microwave-safe bowl, microwave the solid shortening for 40 seconds or until melted.
Add the white chocolate melts and stir until completely melted.
Immediately coat each Rice Krispies stick with the melted white chocolate and place on the baking sheet to “set” for at least 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, cut each Airheads piece into 2 pieces lengthwise. You will have 18 pieces total.
Once the chocolate on the Rice Krispies is dry, take an Airhead piece and wrap around a Rice Krispies stick at the very top of the stick. Pinch at the back to seal.
Wrap another Airheads piece around the stick about 1/2-1 inch down from the top one. Pinch at the back to seal.
Repeat step 7 with another Airheads piece. Complete steps 6-8 until all of the Rice Krispies have 3 airheads pieces alternating with white chocolate for the hat.
With the black write-on gel, pipe two eyes, a nose and whiskers on each stick.
At the very bottom of each stack, pipe a large “X” with the red write-on gel. Fill it in with the gel to resemble a bow tie.
