Newborns 101

Having a newborn is an exciting experience for new mothers and fathers. You finally get to see this beautiful baby that you’ve been growing for 9 months. You will experience a lot of positive things when you’re looking this beautiful baby in the eye. Keep in mind that with everything positive, there are some things to keep an eye on. After you have your beautiful baby, keep these tips in mind.

I got many great tips from readers when creating this post. See all their great advice in our Facebook Thread full of Newborn Tips!

Amazon Baby Registry Discounts

Guess what mom! It is not too late to register that baby. If you sign up for a Free Amazon Baby Registry at Amazon.com, add everything you need to your wish list. Get extra Amazon Baby Registry discounts and get an extended return period. Additionally, you can pick up your own Baby Registry Welcome Box from Amazon. This Welcome Baby Box is exclusive to prime costumers who have opened an Amazon Baby Registry. The Baby Registry Welcome Box contains product samples for mom and baby.

Tips for a Newborn

{aka The Fourth Trimester}

Babies don’t need to take a bath every day: There is a misconception that babies need to take baths every day. This is far from the truth, giving your baby a bath every day can eventually dry out their skin. It’s not as if your baby is running marathons to get sweaty and dirty. You can easily use a washcloth to wash them up. Also, hold off a full bath until their umbilical cord stump has fallen off, generally around week 3. When bathing, don’t let the cold hair shock them. A happy baby is much easier than a miserable one. Cover your baby with a warm washcloth or two.

newborn-tip-7

Ask for help if breastfeeding isn’t going okay: Breastfeeding is hard. For some moms, it comes easy and for other moms, it takes a lot of work. It’s okay to ask for help whenever breastfeeding isn’t going okay. Don’t make yourself feel like there is something wrong with you if breastfeeding isn’t going as smoothly as you thought.  If you are having latch-on issues while breastfeeding your baby, you can use breast shields to help the process.  One of the best resources I had before my first baby arrived what this book – The Nursing Mother’s Companion. I took lamaze class but I only read one book before baby, after all labor is only hours, breastfeeding is months!

newborn-tip-6

Line up people you can talk to and receive advice: Having a newborn, especially for the first time, can make you question everything. In fact, you will probably have a million questions. Line up several people you can ask questions, just in case you have them. It’s nice to be able to text your mom, sister, aunt, or cousin, just in case you want reassurance. When the advice gets too overwhelming, follow your own mom instinct.

newborn-tip-10

Let yourself heal from childbirth: Allowing yourself to heal from childbirth is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your body. Give your body time to heal. In fact, take as much time as you need. If you want to sit and watch movies the week after you give birth, then do it! Your body has been through so much in the past 9 months, it needs that healing time. This is a great time to snuggle and get to know your newborn.

newborn-tip-1

Be Loud: Guess what?! The womb is a loud place. Don’t’ be quiet for baby when they sleep, you will regret this when they wake up at every other sound when they are older. Vacuum, turn on the TV, let the older kids play, and make some noise. Let them get used to sleeping with sound, especially if they are not the only baby.

newborn-tip-12

Don’t feel like you need to have everything down the first week: Being a mom to a newborn takes some time. Some moms leave the hospital thinking they will be 100% awesome at everything that has to do with having a newborn. Slow down and remember that it takes time to learn something new. Don’t be hard on yourself if you don’t have everything down the first week or even the first month. Everything will come in time!

newborn-tip-11

Join a mama group of some sort: During the next few weeks after having a newborn, you are going to have lots of questions. You are going to want to know answers to all of the questions you have. You are going to want to make sure you’re not alone in some situations that come along with having a newborn. Join a group to relieve some of those new mama anxieties. This also gives you a good time to get out of the house so you feel like you are taking care of yourself and not only baby.

newborn-tip-3

Take turns taking care of the baby with your spouse: Make sure your baby has ample time alone with Daddy.  His touch and voice are different than yours, and this will begin a bonding process for baby and daddy. One of the best things you can do as a new mom is let your spouse help. Even if your spouse is resistant, pressure them into helping. Of course, you can do this is in a nice way. Not every person feels comfortable with newborns, but you can easily work your way into helping them feel comfortable. Getting comfortable with newborns comes with experience. The more your spouse is able to help, the easier it will be on everyone.

newborn-tip-9

I hope you find these tips for newborns helpful. If there is one thing you do after having a baby, embrace it as much as you can. There are not any words to describe how fast the newborn stage goes. It seems to go slow at first and then takes off like a rocket ship. Do you have any tips for those with newborns? I’d love to hear your tips!

Third Trimester 101

Forty weeks seems like forever, especially with a never-ending, growing belly. It’s now here and it’s hard to believe it’s already the third trimester in your pregnancy. People have different opinions on the third trimester. Some say it goes fast and some say it goes slow. However, you look at it, there are some things you need to buckle down and do this trimester. Check out these tips to keep you on track!

Baby Registry Welcome Box from Amazon

Guess what mom! It is not too late to register that baby. If you sign up for a Free Amazon Baby Registry at Amazon.com, add everything you need to your wish list. Get extra discounts, and get an extended return period. Additionally, you can pick up your own Baby Registry Welcome Box from Amazon. This Welcome Baby Box is exclusive to prime costumers who have opened an Amazon Baby Registry. The Baby Registry Welcome Box contains product samples for mom and baby.

Tips for the Third Trimester

{Week 27 to Birth}

Stay hydrated: One of the most important things you can do for you and your baby during the 3rd trimester is stay hydrated. Drink as much water as you possibly can. Water keeps you from swelling up and helps get rid of all of the toxins in your body. Water is basically the one thing in the world that you cannot get enough of. It will also be helpful to have a hydrated body in labor.

Read up on breastfeeding or bottle feeding: When it comes to feeding your baby, this is an important decision. No one is telling you to make a decision now, but you should, at least, read up on your options. You can plan to feed your baby a certain way, but won’t really be able to make a decision until baby day gets here. One of the best resources I had before my first baby arrived what this book – The Nursing Mother’s Companion. I took lamaze class but I only read one book before baby, after all labor is only hours, breast feeding is months! One other book I read after (I wish I had read sooner) was The Happiest Baby on the Block.

Finalize any insurance paperwork for yourself and baby: Insurance can be a real downer when it comes to having a new baby. Make sure you take care of everything you can, insurance wise, pre-baby! You don’t want that stress following you around the days before or even post-birth.

Enjoy a babymoon away with your spouse or family: If you have the finances and the time available, why not enjoy some time away before baby gets here? Traveling with a newborn is anything but easy for most people. Little babies are very demanding and often get more attention than your spouse. Get the travel bug out of your system now and enjoy those last few moments with just the two of you.

labor-playlist-relaxing-songs-frugal-coupon-living

Create a music playlist for at the hospital: Another productive thing you can do during your third trimester is create a music playlist for the hospital. It’s always way better listening to your own music than someone else’s. Studies have shown that listening to relaxing music can help with the ease of the process of delivery and the pain. Here are some suggestions in case you want something other than your spouse’s loving and encouraging words.

Labor and Delivery Playlist

20 Relaxing Songs for Your Labor Playlist

  1. The Best Day by Taylor Swift
  2. Better Together by Jack Johnson
  3. You’re Beautiful by James Blunt
  4. A Thousand Years by Christina Perri
  5. Let It Be by The Beatles
  6. Just Breathe by Pearl Jam
  7. Arms Wide Open by Creed
  8. Closing Time by Semisonic
  9. I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz
  10. Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles
  11. Little Wonders by Rob Thomas
  12. The Luckiest by Ben Folds
  13. Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
  14. Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle
  15. He Gave Me You by Sierra
  16. What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
  17. Handprints on the Wall by Kenny Rogers
  18. Lullaby by Dixie Chicks
  19. Dream by Priscilla Ahn
  20. All That She Wants (is another baby) by Ace of Bace – for good humor!

Create a birth plan: One of the most important things you can do during the third trimester is create a birth plan. While no birth plan is perfect, you can, at least, have an idea of what YOU want to happen during your birth. Believe it or not, you do have a lot of say when it comes to HOW you want to have your baby. Who do you want in the room? Do you want an epidural? Do you need music or a scent to help you relax?

Enjoy your last few weeks as a pregnant mom: As uncomfortable as you may be these last few weeks of pregnancy, you should enjoy them as much as you can. If you’re a first-time mom, get some naps in. No one can really prepare you for how tired you’ll be when your baby actually gets here.

Complete a walkthrough of the hospital: It would be very nice to know where you were about to have your baby. You can take tours of the hospital in which you want to have your baby. Tours are typically free and it only takes a few minutes of your time. Well worth it to be prepared in the long run.

Start prepping meals for your freezer: Food isn’t the first thing you want to deal with after having a baby. Although some people may bring you meals, it’s so nice to have frozen meals in the freezer ready. You can start prepping these meals in your 3rd trimmer to enjoy after your baby gets here.

hospital-bag-collage-frugal-coupon-living

Pack your hospital bags for you and baby: And one of the most fun parts of having a baby is getting those hospital bags packed!

  2. Nursing Pajamas and Robe – We love the Everly Grey 4-Piece Pajama Set.

  10. Slippers – We love the Jessica Simpson Bow Ballerina Slippers.

Getting ready for baby during your third trimester may seem like a lot of work, but it’s possible to prep and have an easy transition. Many call this the nesting stage and taking advantage of the last minute to do list and rest is very important for baby and mama. Your newborn is coming!

say-hello-to-essential-oils-frugal-coupon-living-good-reference-guide

Have you been looking into essential oils but don’t know where to start or which brand to try? I am part of the amazing family of Young Living Essential Oils. Essential oils are a fabulous natural substitute for many household chemical laden cleaners, medicines, and even beauty products. Having looked into several companies I was convinced that Young Living was the way to go and use them on myself and both of my girls daily.

I like using Young Living Essential Oils because

a) They grow the plants on their own farm so they know exactly where the oils come from, and they use no pesticides or herbicides in the growing or distilling of the oils.  Many companies acquire their oils from a third party and who knows how they have been treated or sprayed with.

b) They are therapeutic grade, this means that they are safe for topical or internally. Therapeutic is safe, natural, and pure.  Non-therapeutic are not safe for topically or internal use. You will not be able to get all the wonderful benefits that essential oils have to offer if you cant use them fully.

c) They are of a great quality but very reasonably priced, sometimes using all natural, products means paying a premium price but not with Young Living’s oils. Oils are priced reasonably even in singles but your best savings is in purchasing the Premium Starter Kit.

Essential oils can be used everyday in so many ways – headaches, scrapes and burns, tummy ailments, rashes, to wake you up, to calm you, sunburns, household cleaner, and much more!

Here are just a few things some of my favorite oils are good for:

  • Lavender – calming, insomnia, bug bites, sunburn
  • Frankincense -asthma, inflammation, immune boosting
  • Peppermint – headaches, fevers, nausea,
  • Thieves -strep throat, toothaches, infections

This is just a quick list of the many ways that Young Living Essential Oils can be used on a daily basis, and there are many more ways to use these oils to naturally treat you and your families ailments.

Here’s how to sign up:

1. Head over to the Young Living page here and fill out your information.

wholesale-member-option

2. Be sure the “Wholesale Member” option is checked so that you don’t end up paying retail prices.

3. Be sure the “sponsor ID” and “enroller id” say 1819360 (so that I can send you your FREEBIES)

4. If you do not feel comfortable putting in your social security number (this is only for tax purposes if you decide to turn this into a business) then you can get an EIN from the IRS in just a few seconds here and use that number instead (the IRS just needs to be able to connect some number with you for tax purposes). They need a Social Security Number or an EIN because if you make $600 or more per year selling Young Living products, you will receive a 1099 form in the mail (which is required by law). Young Living will never share this info with anyone.

5. Select which starter kit you want to get. To get the FREEBIES, you’ll need to check the option that says “Premium Starter Kit”. You can get the kit that’s $150 or you can get the kit that’s $160 with the Bamboo Diffuser (in my opinion, the Bamboo Diffuser looks nicer, but doesn’t put out as much as the diffuser that comes with the $150 kit).

6. There’s a Step 3 of the sign-up process that you can skip if you don’t want to mess with that part, OR you can get a couple of extra free oils if you know already that you would like to order monthly (see BONUS step below!)

7. Go through the checkout process.

8. After you sign up, send an email to frugalcouponliving@gmail.com letting me know that you signed up through this promotion. Somewhere in the email, be sure to put the promotion code “Essentails Oil Offer”.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does signing up make me a “distributor”?

Nope! You are not required to sell anything at all to anyone. When you become a wholesale member, you get a special link that you can share with friends and get a “thank you” check from Young Living for their purchases, but there are no minimum sales amounts at all. In fact, 90% of the wholesale members in Young Living don’t do the business side at all. They are buying from Young Living because of the quality alone.

Am I required to make a minimum purchase each month?

There are absolutely no minimum monthly purchase requirements. To remain a wholesale member, you have to make $50 worth of purchases per year to keep your membership. But if there’s a year that you don’t make a $50 purchase, you can reinstate your wholesale membership discount by just placing a $50 order.

If you do find yourself making regular purchases each month, then Young Living has a rewards program called Essential Rewards where you can make a nice percentage back in product credit each month on all of your purchases. So that’s a neat program to join if you find that you *want* to purchase regularly, but it’s not a requirement for being a wholesale member.

Why should I buy from Young Living instead of other essential oils companies?

It does seem like a new essential oils company pops up every day, doesn’t it?

I can’t speak to the quality of other companies, but I can say that Young Living is the only company that has their own farms (in the regions where the plants should be grown), can absolutely guarantee that no pesticides or herbicides were used in the growing of any of their oils (they use essential oils for pest control and they do all of the weeding by hand), has their own testing equipment (they do both in-house and 3rd party testing, and use many different testing methods not just GC/MS which only tests for certain chemicals, not whether those chemicals are synthetic or not), and only uses the first distillation of oils instead of adding chemicals to get more out of the plant.

Young Living also is the only company that I know of that is directly in charge of essential oil farming operations. Every other company that I know of goes through some kind of an “oil broker” to buy their oils. They have to trust that the oil broker is telling the truth, who has to trust that the essential oil distilleries are telling the truth, who have to trust that the farmers are telling the truth about what they say they are doing.

With Young Living, you just have to trust one company instead of several.

It’s a trust step either way since anyone could be lying, but I personally feel the most comfortable trusting Young Living since they are a full-disclosure company. Anyone can visit the farms, participate in the harvesting and distillation, view the Young Living labs, and see the entire process. That’s not an option with other companies.

How will I know which oils to use for what?

One of the benefits of getting a starter kit through this promotion is that you also get to join our private Facebook group that’s specifically for questions about essential oils! We have a wealth of information right in our Facebook group and there are always other “oilers” who are happy to share their experiences.

The reference guide that we are giving away as part of this promotion is also a HUGE resource. You can look up almost anything in it and see which essential oils and supplements can be helpful.

Does Young Living only sell essential oils?

Young Living actually has an entire line of personal care products, supplements, meal replacements, energy drinks, and more! Almost every product incorporates essential oils (for example, frankincense is absolutely wonderful in facial products), but there’s a wide variety of products available.

What if I live outside of the United States?

For those who live in Canada, we will mail the book and labels, but will need to either reduce or remove the gift card to cover the extra shipping charge.

International orders of 100 PV or more will receive a $25 Amazon or Paypal gift card. Many times the only kit that is offered to those that reside outside of the US doesn’t have a PV at all. To receive the gift card, you will need to have a minimum of 100 PV in your final order.

What about overseas US military?

If you are military with an APO/FPO address, you can still receive the same promotion as those in the United States since the address is here in the US.
