Washington DC with the Kids

{10 Things to Do with the Kids in DC}

If you have kids and live in the DC area, it only makes sense to get out there and explore what this awesome city has to offer. Whether you’re new to this area or just want to get out and re-explore the nation’s capital with your kiddos, here are 10 things to do with kids in DC.

Hello Bei Bei! The Smithsonian Zoo debuted their newest 5 month old Panda bear today! #pandastory #beibei

A post shared by Ashley Recio Langston (@frugalcouponliving) on Jan 16, 2016 at 1:12pm PST

1.) The National Zoo – One of our favorite things to do in the DC area with our kids is the National Zoo. This 163-acre zoological park is in the heart of Washington, D.C. They are home to 2,000 individual animals. Open to the public 364 days a year, it is free to visit but does cost to park. Try public transportation as both the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park Metro stops are within walking distance of the Zoo.

2.) National Air and Space Museum – If your kids love to learn there are two National Air and Space Museums. There is one on the mall (the area of DC where most Smithsonian Museums are located) and one out near the Dulles airport (our favorite) in Virginia. The museums maintain the world’s largest and most significant collection of aviation and space artifacts. Take a look at Wright Flyer, Apollo 11, the Space Shuttle Discovery, and more! No matter which location you’re close to, you can check it out!

3.) National Museum of Natural History – We are huge history buffs around here, so going to the National Museum of Natural History is a no-brainer. If you’ve never been to this museum before, it’s focused on everything from bones to mammals to mummies to Human Origins. The African Elephant the exhibit most recognizable but also check out the live butterfly pavilion, Tarantula feedings, the biggest blue diamond in the world, and a Live Coral Reef.

4.) International Spy Museum – Feeling like James Bond? This is one of the most fun museums in the DC area and kids love it. There are tons of exhibitions, experiences, and educational programs to dive into. The mission of this museum is to explore the craft, practice, history, and contemporary role of espionage. It is really neat how each museum has special details for children to make the visit engaging and exciting.

5.) National Mall – Don’t be confused, this is not a place for shopping. The mall is a park in the art of the District where you can see dozens of museums, monuments, and the White House. Walk from the Capital, down the large row of  Smithsonian Museums, past the Washington Monument, glimpse the White House, pass the WWII Memorial, see the beautiful Reflecting Pool and finish at the LIncoln Memorial – a great spot to catch the sunset! Although it’s called a “mall”, your brain will be the only thing receiving new inventory as it is a rich place for exploring.

6.) A National’s Game – “Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd…” Whether you’re a fan of baseball or not, going to a National’s Game is a must for any bucket list. You might even feel like a local!

Finally braving the city after the large rush of inauguration visitors. Today’s trip is to the Natural History Museum to visit Q?rious Microscope Lab. You can view dinosaur bones, insects, minerals, animals and so much more…. any idea what that yellow eye staring back at us is? It’s the lesser bird-of-paradise.

A post shared by Ashley Recio Langston (@frugalcouponliving) on Jan 28, 2017 at 9:46am PST

7.) The Spark Lab located in the National Museum of American History – We visit the Spark Lab at least once a month if not more often. It is a great place for my girls, ages 6 and 7, to try hands on experiments with the knowledge and supervision of some pretty smart volunteers. It also brings a love and passion for science and technology, something I love having instilled at such young ages. While you are in the American History Museum, be sure to see the Flag that Inspired the Star-Spangled Banner. Also take a look at The Natural History Museum and go to their hidden gem, Q?rious Microsope Lab.

8.) U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing – This is such a cool place for kids to visit in the DC area. Of course it’s unique because it’s not every day kids can see where currency is made and engraved. Whether you’re visiting or live in the DC area, you have got to check out this place. I visited as a young kid and it is the place I remember most!

A lot of history is being uncovered by these two girls at the Newseum in DC…. did you use your Bank of America card for a FREE museum entrance today? @newseum #bankofamerica #museumsonus #newseum #dc

A post shared by Ashley Recio Langston (@frugalcouponliving) on Aug 2, 2015 at 11:50am PDT

9.) Newseum – This kid friendly DC attraction is best for older kids as it features dramatic pictures and stories that made the national news. Exhibits include 9/11, the Vietnam War, and a section of gripping Pulitzer Prize winning photos. Bank of America cardholders can get free admittance the first weekend of the month. You can also buy tickets online to save 15%.

10.) The National Harbor – This awesome place to visit is located in the District in Maryland. I suggest going toward the end of the day, it is a great place to watch the sun set and grab a bite. You can literally shop, dine, play, and stay at The National Harbor. We love the Gaylord National.  Seasonally, both ICE (winter) and movies and the park (summer) are great. Recently, they have added a casino, MGM National Harbor.  You do have to travel a little to get to it. The best way is by car, try UBER and get your first ride free!

Since moving to DC, we have been able to experience so many places, full of rich history. We love learning and exploring, so DC is the perfect place for us. Have you ever visited any of these 10 places for kids in DC? I’d love to hear your experience!

12 Best Insider Tips for Visiting Walt Disney World

This post may contain affiliate links or ads. Read my privacy policy and disclosure policy here.

Are you wondering if there is something you are missing when you visit Walt Disney World? With the parks so spread out and big, there is bound to be something that only an insider knows about… you know, Disney Secrets! We gathered some of the best tips for your next Disney World vacation so you are sure to make the most of your time there.

12 Best Insider Tips for Visiting Walt Disney World

walt disney world-insider-tips

Maybe you have visited Walt Disney World before or maybe this is your first time, either way here are 12 frugal and fun insider tips for your visit to Disney World. You never know, you might find out something new about the huge Walt Disney World parks that end up being a favorite family tradition.

disney world strollers

1. Strollers at Walt Disney World:  To start off let us talk about getting around the parks with kids and babies.  If you have either Magic Kingdom pass, a park hopper pass or other park pass combos you will want to know that bringing a stroller is a good idea for babies and kids, even for bigger kids.   There is always stroller parking next to each ride to you won’t’ have to worry about what to do with your stroller when you’re on a ride.  A stroller can serve as a place to store snacks and lunches, hats and sunblock and even and place to keep any souvenirs you buy.  Be sure to bring something to use as a cover for your stroller because it rains a lot in Orlando area.

2. Fast Pass+   Next, you will want to get your Fast Passes sorted out. A fast pass helps you pass up the long line. Fast Passes available for the most popular rides so you don’t waste all your time waiting in lines.  Fast passes do have rules so be sure to read up on them here on the Walt Disney World Fast Pass+ page. The hardest Fast Passes to get are rumored to be the Dwarf Mine Train and Frozen Ever After rides so try for those first thing when you arrive. Be sure to arrive during your Fast Pass + time so you don’t miss your turn to get on your favorite rides.

3. Free Drinks: If you are looking for a quick caffeine fix or just a cold soda pop refresher visit the Club Cool hosted by Coke Cola in Epcot. You can sample a wide assortment of Coke flavors from around the world. By the time you sample all 8 you might not need to buy a drink. Aren’t freebies the best!

4.Visit During the Off  Season: Walt Disney World can get very busy during peak times of the year such as spring break and during the summer when kids are out of school. Visiting mid-week on the off season times throughout the year means shorter lines, often cooler weather and more time on rides.

The off season times include the months of January, except the weekend they host the marathon, in
February, except for the long President’s Day weekend,  anytime between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, October is fun with all the Haloween decorations and falls right in that time period, and between Easter and Memorial day.

5. Schedule your Disney dining at Least 180 ahead. If you want to get the best deal and to be able to dine with your favorite character be sure to use schedule ahead dining.

6. Ride Swap: Here’s another Disney Secret! Ride swap is for parents with kids or babies who are too small to ride on some of the rides or for kids who just happen to fall asleep. One parent can ride then switch with the other parent without having to wait in line again.

7. Ride Closures:  You won’t want to be disappointed so check ahead before scheduling your trip to make sure your favorite ride isn’t closed for maintenance.  At any given time 2-3 rides will be closed for rehab.

8. View the Fireworks from the Rides! There are several rides that give you the perfect view of the nightly fireworks show. The lines for these rides almost disappear as the fireworks show is about to begin and it’s more fun seeing the fireworks from a ride than fighting a big crowd near the main street. My favorite view of the fireworks show is from Thunder Mountain.

9. Free Movie & Marshmallows: Every evening at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort you can join Chip ‘n Dale around the camp fire for a sing-a-long and s’mores. Afterwards, enjoy a classic Disney movie under the stars. The best part about it all is that it’s free for everyone, not just those who are staying at the Fort Wilderness Resort.

10. Open the Park:  When visiting Disney World arrive early and dress really cute in your matching Disney themed outfits adorned with Mickey’s ears and you have a good chance to be chosen as the family to open the park. It will be an unforgettable experience for the kids.

11. Kids Meals: Our family loves this Disney Secret. Save big money on order a kids size meal. Adults can order a kids size or order an adult size meal and split it since the adult sized meals have generous proportions.

12. Animal Kingdom: Visit the Animal Kingdom in the morning. This is when the animals eat. Most of them will be out for you to see. The kids will love it!

Top 5 Disney World Moments Children Can’t Miss

A Disney World vacation can be the highlight of a childhood filled with family vacations, and with so many great options it’s not always easy deciding what to do. Planning a Disney trip with one child in mind is hard enough, but if you have several children that you will be taking to Disney World, making sure they each do things they enjoy can be a challenge. Thankfully, there are so many can’t miss moments found in every Disney park that are at the top of the list for every single visitor, no matter their age.

Kilimanjaro Safari

The Animal Kingdom is the most overlooked parks by guests at Walt Disney World, but not by Disney. It is a fantastic place to spend an entire day with kids, especially those that are enthusiastic about animals. While some guests pass it off as an expensive zoo, you only need to pass through the gates to know that it is so much more. The Kilimanjaro Safari is one of those rides that children remember for years, and is one that you shouldn’t miss. Everyone boards an open air safari jeep that makes its way through an entertaining and wild trip through the safari. Lines are short enough and every trip is different so don’t hesitate to get in line again if children make the request.

Mickey Mouse & Friends Greeting

Every child, and guest, at Disney World cannot miss a stop to see Mickey Mouse and friends. This is one of the most popular moments and photo opps in the whole park, with everyone lining up for photos, autographs and hugs, where ever the characters congregate. Check park listings to find out where characters will have scheduled meet n greets, but your best option is to reserve a character meal time when kids can get plenty of one on one time with several characters all at once. You also can consider a Fast Pass.

The Pirate’s League in Adventureland

Disney is all about giving in to fun and make believe, so why not indulge in the ultimate make believe experience and let your children have their moment as a pirate. Head over to Adventureland and let children take part in The Pirate’s league experience, where they will can dress up, wear face paint, learn to be a pirate and set off to find treasure. Taking part in this experience also gives children the chance to be a part of a very special and fun Parade of Pirates through Adventureland. If you have more of a princess, check out the Bibbidi Bobbidi Botique in Downtown Disney or the Magic Kingdom.

Toy Story Midway Mania

This ride at Disney World (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) is so popular because its so much fun, but it also provides families with good memories because it has a way of making kids out of all of us. Children love it when their parents get down to business and compete in this video game ride with them, nothing wrong with fun competition. Make sure to ride Toy Story Mania together, as a family and its sure to be one of your favorite moments of your entire vacation. If you still want to grab more of Buzz, also check out the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

Wishes Nighttime Spectacular

There are a lot of ways to spend an evening at Disney World, and with two parks putting on firework shows, it can be hard to choose where to end your night. Disney World makes it easy for families to pick and children will definitely be thrilled to see the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular in The Magic Kingdom. More than just a firework show, Wishes inspires kids to dream and sends them to bed with stars in their eyes.

These are the top 5 Disney World moments that children can’t miss.  Each one is iconic, sure to create memories and fun for children of all ages.

Gaylord National Christmas at the Potomac 2017

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year….” After this weekends visit to the Gaylord National, I really can’t get the song out of my head… I am ready for Christmas!

Visiting the Gaylord National was an amazing way to get into the holiday spirit. The resort and convention center were beautifully decorated. This year, the Christmas activities and spirit is magnified with JOY – A Holiday Spectacular Atrium Show. In this musical, the rich harmonies of classic and moderns songs create a musical tapestry that celebrates the JOY of this incredible time of year.

Gaylord National Christmas at the Potomac 2017

At the beginning of our day, our family experienced brunch – Rudolph’s Holly Jolly Breakfast. Enjoy the company of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, and Clarice. Enjoy a tasty breakfast buffet, play reindeer games and Sing-A-Long with your new friends. Our 13-month old son, would not stop clapping and laughing the entire brunch – and boy did he indulge in an omelet!

After breakfast, we had a lovely visit with Santa – it appears everyone was on the nice list this year! Also enjoyed the Gingerbread Decorating Corner, Build-A-Bear Workshop and Scavenger Hunt, Potomac Express Train and Carousel. This picture isn’t too clear, but this little guy enjoyed his first train ride – toot, toot!

Gaylord National Christmas at the Potomac 2017

Unfortunately, this year I was unable to participate in my favorite, annual Christmas activity – ICE! I am on bed rest with the twins so I enjoyed it through my family’s eyes.

Gaylord National Christmas at the Potomac 2017

ICE!—our signature holiday attraction—is back with a new theme in 2017! Experience favorite scenes from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer brought to life in this walk-through winter wonderland carved from more than two million pounds of ice.

ICE! is an indoor winter wonderland featuring:

  • Walk-through holiday attraction, kept at a chilly 9 degrees
  • Two million pounds of ice sculptures hand-carved by 35 artisans from Harbin, China. Learn more about The Making of ICE!
    Four ice slides
  • Colorful ice sculptures depict the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
  • A stunning crystal clear ice sculpture scene of the Nativity

Dress warmly, but don’t fret. You are given a Blue Parka for your comfort. We wore our ski hats, ski gloves, wool socks, and scarves with our parka. I even had the girls put their ski coat below their parka. Had to stay warm, 9 degrees is cold!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Circus Out of this World

Alright friends…. no not miss this opportunity – Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Circus Out of this World.

Last night the family and I made it to one of the last circus events by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®.  I was truly grateful for the opportunity to experience this event with my kids. It is something I remember growing up and knowing that they are on their farewell tour, I wanted to get one last look. The kids were mesmerized with all the acts and animals.  Honestly, I was too – how do they do all these tricks and acts? It is mind blowing!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BSm23_qFBcY/?taken-by=frugalcouponliving

To me the most amazing act was the motorcycles in the circular cage. I think my husband was most terrified of seeing the lions and tigers in the cage.  Also incredible were the trapeze artists and it was really cool to watch the basket “ballers” on their unicycles.

I enjoyed that the kids talked about it the next day. My daughter, while reminiscing, wrote down all the animals she saw – so here is her list! A kangaroo, lions, tigers, a leopard, horses, pigs, goats, donkeys, and more. As an adult, I really loved watching the relationships the performers had. The animal trainer was a 3rd generation lion tamer. You could see how much he loved his animals. You could see as well the years of discipline the trapeze family had as well as the motorcycle drivers.  You wouldn’t believe the tricks some of the acrobats could do on these horses! I was talking to my husband on the way home, I have no idea what can compare to this show. I am truly sad to see it go as there isn’t anything out there that is the same!

In Out Of This World, audiences will be riveted by an interactive, action-packed storyline filled with space-age family fun and technology, which deepens their connection to the performers. Through the lens of a magic telescope capable of discovering the most spectacular circus stars in the galaxy, they will join the Circus Space Fleet on a heroic mission of good versus evil to bring performers back to Earth, traveling to interstellar worlds of sand, water, fire and ice.

For the first time, the show features thrill skaters in addition to unbelievable performances by gravity-defying acrobats, majestic animals and hilarious clowns. Imaginations will run wild throughout the nonstop display of artistic athleticism, with acts seamlessly transitioning from floor to air to ice, a feat never before done in Ringling Bros.

Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 800-745-3000, via www.ticketmaster.com, and at the Verizon Center and EagleBank Arena box offices.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Circus Out of this World

The other day my husband I were walking down the street when we spotted an elephant that looked much like the ones you saw in the circle growing up. This lead to our conversations about our own experiences of the circus growing up. We then talked about the end of an era for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®. It was sad. We didn’t give it much though until I saw it was coming to our area!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® is Bringing the Out Of This WorldTM Circus Experience to Washington, D.C. Area.  Families in Washington and Fairfax can see Ringling Bros. one last time before the circus closes permanently in May 2017.  Prepare to see the most extraordinary performers and exotic animals one last time when the ultimate circus spectacle Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents Out Of This World comes to the Washington, D.C. area.  You and your loved ones and friends can witness incredible acrobatic performances on different planets.

Top 10 Restaurants in Washington, DC

When you’re in the DC area, you have to eat! Food is at the forefront of this melting pot of cultures, backgrounds and history and there are so many great restaurants to enjoy! For any city, I personally use the app YELP to help me find types of food and popular bites. I love that you can see dollar signs, photos of their dishes, and reviews from real people.. Luckily, for all who visit the District, there are tons of options when it comes to choosing a restaurant you love. Here are some of our favorite picks (from a local) …

1.) Old Ebbitt Grill: Established in 1856, the first thing that comes to mind when you visit Old Ebbitt Grill is that this restaurant is practically in the backyard side yard of the White House. Take a look on their website not only for a menu but also take a look at some of their very own recipes. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and have a variety of foods on their menu. The food is traditional, as far as American food goes, and it is delicious. We have brought many of friends for the feel of true city DC. Expect to see many working individuals as it is in the heart of government. You’ll want to make reservations at this restaurant or be prepared to wait. That’s okay, their bar is pretty fun too!

2.) Founding Farmers: Another great pick in the DC area of restaurants, Founding Farmers is also located between the White House and Georgetown (there is also a location in Virginia at Tyson’s Corner). It opened in 2008 and offers customers a farm-type vibe. You’ll find they offer everything from brunch, dessert, and more. The food is made from scratch every day and you will find a variety of foods available! This restaurant is one of my favorites!

3.) Cava Mezze: You’ll love Cava Mezze for the simple fact that they offer a traditional Greek menu. I would call it a Greek Fusion as the food is creative, fun and tasty. The setting of the restaurant is warm and cozy. It’s a comfortable, casual ambiance but everyone will be dressed nicer – jeans and a nice top to dresses that sparkle .  It’s a great place to grab a glass of wine, some cheese and sample the items on their menu. They have four locations, but this particular one is in DC. Some of their menu staples include Grape Leaves and Spanakopita, tableside flambéed Saganaki (you must get this!) and braised Elysian Farm lamb shank. This is also one of my favorite restaurants. I love that they have a “fast food” option with a sister restaurant called  Cava Grill. You can find this in malls or shopping areas. There are over a dozen locations.

4.) Fiola & Fiola Mare: One thing you will love about Fiola is that they are focused on Italian food all of the way. Although they are two separate restaurants, they owners are the same. Fiola DC is focused on offering sophisticated food for many of DC’s finest. Fiola Mare is focused on flavor and texture with the various types of seafood they offer. It is also located on the edge of the Potomac River making it a beautiful view at night.

5.) Le Diplomate: This restaurant in the DC area offers French food. They offer simple, but delicious items like cappuccinos and croissant rolls. They also offer items like Onion Soup Gratinée, Steak Frites and Escargots, and items like Bouillabaisse and Entrecôte de Boeuf. Grab a glass of wine and enjoy their extraordinary menu. This is a very nice restaurant. You can expect to pay top dollar for this top quality French food in DC.

6.) Carmines: This restaurant is focused on Southern Italian Cuisine and they do a mighty fine job of it. You might recognize the name from their famous NYC locations. Carmines is more focused on value and offering their customers a great experience and large family-style dishes. On their website, they show a general menu, where you can find that they offer items like Porterhouse Steak and Veal Cutlet. They also of course, have more simple items like Chicken Marsala and Cold Antipasto. Take a look at the review I did HERE.

7.) The Red Hen: Another restaurant with  Italian influenced food. They offer dinner, wine, cocktails, and desserts. The prices on their dinner menu are reasonable. They offer pasta, appetizers, and other traditional Italian foods. Their website is very detailed and gives you a good idea of what you’ll experience if you decide to visit. I personally love the atmosphere an ambiance with their open kitchen feel.

8.) Blacksalt Fish Market & Restaurant: When you are this close to Maryland and the coast, seafood is fresh and great. Visit Blacksalt Fish Market & Restaurant for lunch, dinner, and brunch. Their menu is pretty pricey, so you’ll want to keep this in mind before you visit. If you are looking to save, lunch is probably your best time to visit.  They do have great reviews, so it may be worth every pretty penny you spend. You can eat light later in the day.

9.) Rose Luxury: Located on Capitol Hill, this is a place that reflect the heart of DC. They are open Monday through Saturday only from 5-10 PM, and they serve dinner and drinks nightly. Good to know in case you are thinking of visiting earlier in the day. They offer a small menu with items like Beef Ribeye, Hand Cut Chitarra, and Confit Goat. Yeah, you’ll definitely want to check out the menu before you head out, however, the prices are reasonable. I love the description on their website “- Order yourself a nice cocktail or glass of wine, Choose a couple of Small/Family Style dishes to share, Eat, go home, come back tomorrow!”

10.) Rasika: Finally, a restaurant in DC that offers modern Indian cuisine. My husband lived in India for a year, so his standards are pretty high. This is an award winning restaurant in which the owner started in 1989. They have won many RAMMYs and the owner has a long list of other awards. They even have been named in the top 20 restaurants in America by Zagat 2014. Need suggestions on what to order, consider Naan and Tandoori Chicken (my favorites) or their tasting menu to get a sample of it all!

If you’re looking for a restaurant in DC to try out, these top 10 are sure to NOT disappoint. If you have ever eaten at any of these, fill me in, did you love/hate any of them?
