Camping? If you love to camp, you know that camping organization is key in planning your trip – after all once you are in the wilderness, there is no grocery store right around the corner! Having a thorough list everything you need on a camping trip is essential to make your trip go off without a hitch.

What are the best meals for camping?

Menu planning is essential for camping. It is best to carry as many dry or canned ingredients as you can on the trip. You will have to worry less about things getting sour for items that need to go in a cooler. Since carrying only non-perishable items isn’t practical, it is essential to carry a cool for items like eggs, cheese, and milk. Make sure you follow this camping hack for carrying eggs in your cooler that won’t break! You will be so grateful to arrive at your campsite without breaking a single egg!

It’s also wise to plan camping meals either in a one-pot dish or in individual packets. If you are looking for some meal ideas on your trip, our family loves these individual S’mores Campfire Cones and Campfire Hot Dogs – also great for backyard fun!

Get creative with these fun nighttime camping activities that go beyond the standard board game and ghost story.

Camping Flashlight Hide and Seek

Have you ever heard of flashlight tag? This is one of the most fun camping activities, and it helps the kids get some energy out before it’s time for bed.

How to Play Flashlight Tag

Flashlight Tag Directions: Similar to hide and seek. Everyone carries their own flashlight but only the person who is IT has their’s on. Instead of tagging with hands, you tag with light. Once you’ve been tagged, you turn on your flashlight, point it toward the sky and stand still. Another player can free you by crawling in between your legs (or tagging you). Once everyone is frozen IT wins and the game starts.

Before everyone hides, establish a perimeter (area you cannot go past.) This is especially important for campsites or unfamiliar areas.

We have plenty of other night games you can play outdoors! Print our night games for kids. This includes Glow Sardines, Flashlight Tag, Gloweyball, Ghost in the Graveyard, Firefly, Kick the Can in the Dark, and Night Statues.

Weather Not Great? 12 Tips for Camping in the Rain

Make lemonade out of lemons and enjoy these 12 Tips for camping in the rain. Family camping in the rain activities for both staying dry and getting wet.

tips for camping in the rain

Camping is such a fun vacation to have. It is so simple but yet many people will share some of the most wonderful memories that they have from camping trips recently or from years gone by. It doesn’t matter if you go as a couple, with a group of friends, or take your kids along for the ride, it’s a vacation that suits almost everybody.

Picture the scene, your tent is up, your chairs are out, there’s a BBQ in the background and you hear pleasant chat and kids laughing. The sun is shining and everyone is having such a great time. But wait! The sun doesn’t always shine, does it? You hear rumbling in the distance and the dark clouds begin to roll in.

Camping can still be a great vacation even when it rains. Although camping in the rain is very different, there are so many camping in the rain activities and things you can do that the whole family will enjoy.

Here are some tips for camping in the rainy weather and camping suggestions if you find yourself camping in bad weather.

camping in the rain tips

Camping in the Rain Tips

If the rain isn’t for you, hang tight. You could make some really cool memories out of these lemons. If you have a camping rain shelter, when life gives you lemons, stay at your campsite and make some lemonade.

Some of us just can’t stand the rain. The best thing is we can all check a forecast ahead of time and if it does forecast rain at any point during your vacation you can be prepared. Here are some of the things you can do if you plan on staying inside the tent when it starts to rain.

Bring with you some emergency board games

One of the first things you could do would be to pack up some emergency board games. These are great for evenings anyway even when you aren’t camping in the rain but they are perfect to pull out when the weather starts to descend. Games like Monopoly or Ticket to Ride are great games that take a little longer. Also consider these indoor games if you have the space. So the chances are when you are done, the rain will have stopped and you can venture outdoors.

Card games are always a winner

Card games are also great for when it starts to rain. There are many card games that are age-appropriate for kids and you could even use the time to teach them something new. Again cards are perfect to keep you entertained and occupied at night and a lovely bonding activity before bed.

Make hot chocolate

There is nothing cozier than being warm and listening to the rain and there is something quite magical about being outside yet still warm and dry. Make it extra special by making some camping hot chocolate. Pack a supply just in case and then enjoy the moment.

Use a device and watch a movie

If you brought iPads with you, which let’s face it with kids is likely, then why not download a few films to one of them in case you end up camping in the rain. You can put one on and then watch it together while you wait out the weather.

Hang your clothes to dry

It is likely inevitable your clothes will get wet. When your clothes are soaked, it might be tempting to dump them in the corner but this will add moisture to the temp and also smell like mildew.

Hang wet clothes on a DIY clothesline. under extra tarps to dry. When the sun comes out, you can remove the tarp so you clothes get direct sunlight. Add hand warmers to shoes to keep them warm and to speed up the drying process. Taking time to manage the moisture factor will make your trip a lot more pleasant.

Camping in the Rain Activities

camping in the rain activities

If you want to embrace the rain, get your camping rain jacket, wet gear and water boots and let’s make some life-long memories.

Some people don’t mind the rain and often expect it when camping. There are lots you can do if you want to embrace the rain. Here are some suggestions.

Go and explore

One of the first things to do would be to put on your waterproofs and head out in it. Go for a walk and explore. Nature looks different in all kinds of weather and you may be able to spot some insects and animals that you might not have done if the sun was shining. If you do not have the proper rain gear, grab a garbage bag and turn it into a DIY poncho.

Open water swimming

Don’t stay dry, get wet. Swimming is always a fun activity but swimming in the rain just takes it to the next level. Besides, you are already wet so you may as well just enjoy it. Open water swimming in lakes and rivers are great options for when it rains. Obviously use precaution and make sure it is not thundering and lighting.

Fishing

Fish seem to come to the surface a little more when it’s raining. So if the family are keen fishers then this could be the perfect time to go out with your fishing gear. Dress up in your waterproofs and pack some warm drinks to keep you going.

Water games

Put on an extra layer of clothes or strip down to your wet gear or swim suits. Try something out of the norm like these Minute to Win it Water Games.  Be prepared for 16 splash-tastic 60-second challenges. Laminate your minute to win it directions and supply list before you packing for your camping trip.

Outdoor games

Take all your camping games and play in the wet weather. Using many common supplies found on your camping checklist, enjoy these outdoor games in the rain. You can even go on a camping scavenger hunt (just add the clues to the inside of a Ziploc bag) to keep them protecting from the moisture.

Take your dog out

If you brought your dog camping with you then why not take them out for a walk? Your dog really won’t mind the rain, and it can be a fun activity for everyone to do. You will need to prepare with lots of towels before you leave, so you can get cleaned up the moment you arrive back at your tent.

Jumping in puddles

Finally, the simple activity of jumping in puddles is fun for any age, adults included. So if you have been camping in the rain then there is a big chance there will be plenty of puddles for you to explore.

Also be sure to check out our Rainy Day Activities. This incudes a list of fun things to do in the rain kids activities for indoor (or in the tent) and outdoor fun. (Share on Pinterest)

Camping for awhile? These Overnight Camping Hacks and Tips will add camping activities to a great trip. (Share on Pinterest)

Let’s hope this has given you plenty of ideas on the activities and tips for camping in the rain the whole family will enjoy if it is during your camping trip.

Elf on the Shelf Pom Pom Ball Run

What is great about this next Elf on the Shelf idea is it can be transformed into a DIY activity for toddlers and kids.

Have you heard of a cardboard tube marble run? Using the same concept of a marble run with toilet paper rolls, we created a DIY Pom Pom run for Elf on a Shelf and your toddler.

DIY Toilet Paper Roll Marble Run

Start savings those cardboard tubes. Toilet paper rolls and paper towel tubes are excellent for this easy Elf on the Shelf idea for toddlers. Instead of using the common marble for this hands-on activity, we used Christmas pom-poms to say in the Christmas theme!

Cardboard Tube Run Supplies

  • The Elf on the Shell Doll
  • Cardboard Tubes
  • Washi tape or masking tape
  • Pom-poms
  • Basket or bowl

How do you make a marble run out of toilet paper?

elf on the shelf toddler idea diy marble run

You can make a run out of toilet paper using a few craft supplies. Gather your marble or pom poms, some tape and cardboard tubes.

First find a vertical wall that has space.

Start as high as you want with the first toilet paper tube and tape to the wall.

Add the next tube so it is mostly connected.

Tape another tube and begin to form a path from the top of the wall down to the bottom.

At the bottom of the last tube, have a basket or bowl to collet your pom-poms or marbles.

Toilet Paper Roll Run Tip: It is best to use pom-poms when creating this Elf on the Shelf idea for toddlers. If you have small pets like cats or dogs, be careful as they can eat the pom-poms and that would cause an emergency vet visit. It is also important to monitor children who still put small items in their mouth. This would not be a safe Elf idea for them.
