What are tips for using handprint worksheets?

Since not all handprints are the same, there are a few things to keep in mind. Talk to the kids and let them know that their handprints are not going to fit exactly into the handprint area, but that close enough is fine! That way, they won’t stress out about it and can move on with the rest of the activity.

You can also encourage them to think outside the box and trace their own handprints to recreate some of the transportation vehicles. This shows them that they’re capable of following directions and also using analytical thought to create something new and different, too.

While these A-Z transportation printables focus on quite a few options, it’s not a totally complete list. Have the kids use what they’ve learned and create another page about a vehicle that they haven’t done. They’ll love creative independence!

Make sure that once you print the worksheets, you take the time to laminate them. This is a great way to make this an activity that the kids can play with over and over again. Use markers that are erasable so that the kids can wipe the sheets clean and do these worksheets again!

Instructions

Once you download the public transportation workers, it’s a simple and fun process!

First, get the worksheets. Download your Transportation Printable Worksheets 

Once they’re printed, make sure that they are in alphabetical order, and start. You can leave it as easy as that, or make it more, too. The options are up to you!

Talk to the kids about the different vehicle on the page, and then have them either stamp their handprint in the handprint area or trace and color it in.

You can also paint small hands with a paintbrush and allow each child to stamp their hand on their artwork. Let the hand dry and then continue to color your transportation coloring page.

They do this for each of the printable pages and work their way through! It’s actually a catch-22 in that it’s a fun activity for kids but also a cute keepsake for grandparents or you!

Can these be used for first grade too?

Yes, use for preschool all the way to emergent readers in kindergarten, first, and second grade.

Do these include lowercase letters?

No. The alphabet worksheet set uses all capital letters.

Can you use other mediums of art?

I recently saw a meme about a mom announcing “screen time is over.” The image of this meme was depicting a grown man in a toddler fit. It gave me a good chuckle. Can you relate?

No matter the age of your child, I am sure we can all relate to temper tantrums once screen time has been declared over. In many cases, the temper tantrum is my own as screen time allows me (as a parent and at-home working mother) to get things accomplished… you can relate to this too, right?

If screen time or the end of screen time in your home is a real juggling act, we have technology tickets that might create incentives, rewards, and structure in your home.

What is the definition of Screen Time?

The screen time definition is pretty straightforward. Let’s try to definite it without using the words. Screen time is the number of minutes that one spends on an electronic device which can include a computer, television, iPhone, tablet, gaming system, or Kindle.

Is Screen Time Bad for Kids?

Yes and no. Just like chocolate and sweets, everything that is for you can either be good or bad. It must be used in moderation.

There are a few reasons individuals might express why too much screen time is bad.

Why screen time is bad…

  • It can affect vision

  • There is a rumor it makes tics worse

  • It can cause aggression

  • It can create ADHD

  • It creates an inability to focus

While I have listed a few reasons people do not prefer screen time, I am not going to go over the reasons screen time is bad. In fact, you can quickly do a web search and get plenty of reasons your child should not have screen time. That is up to you.

As a former teacher and mother of five, I am here to show you why screen time is actually good for kids.

Benefits of screen time include…

  • Learning to focus

  • An ability to sit still

  • Education Learning

  • Rewards

So clearly there are good and bad reasons for screen time, now let’s talk about how to do it in moderation.

Screen Time Rules

Knowing the rules of screen time can save you from the temper tantrum we mentioned above.

If screen time is a reward and certain limits are expected, it’s important to go over rules and expectations with kids. If your kids know their expectations then they know what is to come.

Family Rules for Screen Time might include…

  • Staying in safe online environments
  • Not talking with other people online
  • Not going to cat rooms
  • Setting a timer for screen time
  • Completing responsibilities first

Scholastic actually has a good resource of screen time rules when creating some that work for your family.

Two things that I have found helpful in my own struggle with screen time, are giving the children control and also letting the child know how much time they will have beforehand. When I share the amount of time they can play, my kids are not caught off guard when time is officially up because they began “playing” knowing they only had x number of minutes. While this has not solved all my parenting problems, holding true to time has been really helpful.

Let your kids take charge. For example, when our kids get screen time, they set up an alarm on the kid’s Alexa to go alert them when their time is up. This allows me to not keep track of time and also gives them their own responsibility to monitor their time and get off when their time is up. Before beginning their game, they say “Alexa, tell me when 30 minutes is over” …and that is what she does! Tip: You can also work on Alexa giving them a 25-minute reminder, in addition, so they know they need to wind down where they are in the game.

Outdoor games for a family gathering are great for backyard fun. Turn on the grill, cook the hot dogs, and grab a frisbee. Can you throw a frisbee between two sticks? While it might sound simple, it’s harder than you think! Everyone race to the start line for this is a great fun outdoor game.

How to Play: Arrange sticks like goal posts and play flick and sticks family reunion outdoor game similar to football with a  flying disc. Pass the frisbee and get the frisbee through the sticks. Watch the points add up.

Junk in the Trunk

Shake that booty to get the ping-pong balls out of the box that is attached to your booty! The more you shake, the more you’re going to have everyone laughing. This is one hilarious family reunion game sure to produce fun. Perfect for all ages.

How to Play: In this minute-to-win ti family reunion game, swing your hips to have ping pong table balls fall out of an empty kleenex box.

Supplies: an empty box, tape, string, ping-pong balls, scissors

Defy Gravity

Indoor games for family gatherings are important on rainy days. Can you defy gravity? If you can keep three balloons up in the air for 3 minutes, you’ve won the game and can be proud of that feat!

How to Play: Keep 3 balloons in the air for a set time. Add more balloons and a shorter period as skilled participants continue to win.

Roll-On Buddy

Find a round object and see who can roll it across the room first. The kicker? They have to use their nose to get it from one side of the room to the other!

How to Play: Grab an egg, potato, orange, lemon whatever. Each player will get on their hands and knees and use their nose to move a round object across the room. The faster player wins the race.

Face the Cookie

Put an Oreo on your face and see if you can work it down to your mouth, without using your hands! Who can enjoy their tasty treat the fastest?

How to Play: In this traditional one-minute game, move a cookie from your head to your mouth without using your hands. It’s silly, the younger kids love it and the adults can join in on the fun.

Charades

This game is always on the top of the list of fun family reunion game ideas.  Charades is a great ice breaker and is an easy family reunion game indoors when the weather is not ideal. You get the charades templates from us to play. It couldn’t be more simple!

How to Play: Most people know this family card game, act out a list of words without using your voice. Use our list of game cards or use the game card templates and add your own personalized charade words for families.

Family Feud

Survey says… You’ll need to make a purchase for this game but it’s one game that everyone is going to have a blast using. Play the Amazon Family Feud game off Amazon to see who can get the most points!

How to Play: See how well you know the American population. Take turns guessing answers to popular themes and questions.  Use the game included on Amazon or grab your own family reunion family feud game in our Etsy shop. (just search Family Feud in the store search bar.)

Donut on a String

This funny family gathering game is often found at kids’ birthday parties. It is played with a sweet treat of donuts but can be used with apples and steams too – kind of like apple bobbing in fall only post 20202.

How to Play: Tie a donut on a string and see who can devour it first, all without using their hands!

Hot Potato Selfie

Use a cell phone and pass it around a group. Everyone has to pretend to take a selfie and the last person holding it, has the hot potato!

How to Play: pass around a cell phone. Pretend to take a selfie or take a selfie for memories. What a funny family reunion game full of photographic evidence. Play the same as a hot potato game. If the music stops and you have the phone, you are out.

Supplies: cell phone, music

Suck It Up

Can you suck enough air through a straw to hold and transport Smarties from one place to the next?

How to Play: This minute tow in it game for families is great. Use a straw to move smarties from one plate to another plate. The fastest person is the winner. YOu can also make this a team game and extend the time. The first team to finish moving the Smarties wins. Play with Skittles, M&Ms, or other small candies too.

Supplies: Smarties, straw, paper plate

Steal the Bacon

Common family reunion outdoor games can also be moved indoors. Put an object in the middle of the room and hand out numbers. When the number is called, those two people with the number have to hop up and race to steal the object in the middle of the room.

How to Play: Split into teams. Give each player a number. (Each team will have a number 1, 2, 3… etc.) Call out the number and that player must run to the center of the circle and grab the item and move it back to their team. The team that gets the bacon most often to their group, wins.

Supplies: paper and pen, objects like a bean bag

Scavenger Hunt

This family gathering game is common, however, there are crazy ways to twist it up. Give each team 30 minutes to find all the objects on the scavenger hunt list. Use the included list or make up your own clues. Whichever team finishes first is the winner!

How to Play: There are many ways to incorporate a fun scavenger hunt into a family reunion. Use one of our many scavenger hunt contests or use the rules in this family gathering printable set including finding a penny, taking a photo in a grocery cart, or finding an empty refrigerator box (challenge accepted!) This is silly fun and can be played with each team hopping in a car and going for a set period of time. Also, grab our mall scavenger hunt game too. Worm Search

Fill a bowl with whipped cream and gummy worms and have each person fish around using only their noses. The first person to get all the gummy worms out wins!

How to Play: Grab the camera before the game begins. In this pie-eating contest, each contestant tries to find a worm in a sea full of whipped cream. The first player to get all their worms out of the whipped cream wins the game.

Penny for Your Thoughts

Is anyone in your family good with stacking pennies? See who can stack 25 pennies in just one minute of time!

How to Play: This traditional minute game requires a steady hand and fast speed. Using one hand, stack 25 coins in one minute. The fastest player wins.

Water Balloon Toss

You know the drill. Toss the balloons filled with water back and forth, back and forth.

How to Play: This is a traditional outdoor game that is great for a hot day. Pair into partners and toss a water balloon back and forth, don’t let the balloon drop or you are out. You can change it up by having a list of commands during the game for those that find a balloon toss too easy.  If you love this game, add water minute to win it games too.

Wanna Spoon?

Do not worry, this isn’t a traditional spoon race relay – it’s a fun twist using a steady hand.

How to Play: Using a spoon, your mouth, and your skills of picking up ping-pong balls race to win the game. Players will use only a spoon and their mouth – no hands! The fastest player wins.

Supplies: plate or bowl, ping-pong balls, spoon

Watermelon Challenge

Cool off on a hot day with a fun watermelon game. Too easy? Line up the melon and turn it into a relay race for family bonding. Also, take a look at these outdoor games.

How to Play: Kind of like a pie-eating contest with fruit. Slice a watermelon into equal parts. Whoever eats their portion fastest without using their hands, wins!

Never Have I Ever

Have you ever played never have I ever? It’s a game in that you get to answer questions based on if you’ve ever done them or not! The prize? A lot of candy!

How to Play: This might get one sugared up. Instead of taking shots, play with candy. Come up with your own never have I ever… you finish eh statement. Funny ideas can include gotten a speeding ticket, ridden a camel, danced the chicken dance, etc. Adults can play at night time, the traditional way with beverages (also check out these adult drinking games!)

Heads Up!

You’ll need to download the Heads Up! app on your phone to play! You then hold the device to your forehead and have each teammate see how many words they can describe to you.

How to Play: This fun game only requires a smartphone and an app. It’s similar to Charades only you use words to describe the key phrase. See which player guesses correctly most often to declare a winner!

When the kids are little, it’s fun to find creative activities and crafts to do with them. And let’s be honest, the kids will be super pumped to dip their little hands in paint and be a part of creating the alphabet sitting right next to you.

How do you keep the paint from staining kids’ hands?

Some paint will stain hands and sometimes, there isn’t anything that you can do about it. Instead of acrylic paint, the BEST way to keep the paint from staining their hands is to use a washable paint (like this low-cost set.)

You can also add a tad bit of lotion on their hands and have them rub it in before dipping their hands in the paint. This is a great way to add an extra barrier to their skin and can help avoid having stained hands for weeks!

Why are handprint crafts important?

I get it – I’m a parent (and former classroom teacher) and I know the thoughts that surround messy play. But, in my mind, messy play is great for creative play, imaginative play, and fine motor skills as well. In addition to working on fine motor skills and creativity, hand, and fingerprint art leaves a piece of history behind. It captures tiny hands on a certain date and year so you can look back at the little handprints and ask yourself through nostalgia “how did they grow so fast?!” It’s two birds with one stone – learning and sweet keepsake crafts.

Since each printable letter of the alphabet has a space for the kids to dip their hands in paint and be a part of the process, this will also keep them engaged during the entire alphabet activity. That is HUGE for little kids!
