Halloween Safety Tips on Frugal Coupon Living

14 Important Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween season is upon us and most of us get pretty excited. From taking our kids to haunted houses and trick or treating, to decorating our own yards and porches with the latest ghouls and ghosts, Halloween can be dangerous! If we don’t take special precautions and pay close attention, Halloween can go from being a ton of fun to being a real life nightmare.

Never fear, however. We have all the tips you need to make sure your Halloween is perfectly safe. Here are 14 extremely important Halloween safety tips to follow this coming spooky season:

Make sure costumes are not flammable and fit – Costumes that are flammable are among the most dangerous on the market. While most commercial costumes are now flame retardant (make sure you check anyway), homemade costumes are not. Be super careful about what materials you use and that the costume fits snugly and comfortably. A loose or ill fitting costume can make your kids trip, fall and hurt themselves.

Travel in groups – Never be alone on Halloween if you are leaving the house. That goes for kids and adults. There is no good reason to be outside on Halloween alone.

Coach your kids to politely decline an invitation to come indoors – Even if it is cold outside, you should always coach your little ones to stand on the porch and not go inside unless they know them.

Make sure walkways are well lit – When you go to put your decorations together, make sure you light up the walking areas and any part of the trick or treat zone. Kids will otherwise trip, fall and hurt themselves on your property. That is not good for anyone. We suggest carrying a flashlight.

Avoid decorations that could be dangerous – Decorations that can be dangerous might be spikes, sharp points of any kind, open flames and even smoke such as what comes out of a machine. These things can be really cool looking and scary, but they can cause far more problems than they are worth. Use the fake stuff instead that is soft and harmless.

Inspect all candy – Homemade candy is great and all but it should not be eaten from strangers. Be sure your kids know to hold off on eating candy until you get a good look at it. Look for signs of tampering and damage.

Wear reflective clothing strips – These are now sold all over the place and you can literally make any costume glow in the dark. Take these strips and paste them on their bags of candy, backsides and front. The strips are not going to mess up the costume and will light your little one up and make them easily seen.

Carry a light – It helps for them to see where they are going and it also helps to let them be seen. These lights could be incorporated into the costume. If you are a Star Wars character, your light could be a light saber. If you are a pirate, why not carry a lantern?

Use crosswalks whenever possible – Crosswalks are not foolproof by any means but your odds of safely crossing goes up when you use them. Corners are the best options even if there are no crosswalks simply because cars tend to naturally slow down in those areas.

Leave the electronics at home – Why bring the tablets, computers and video games? A cell phone tucked away in case of emergency is okay, but a distracted kid on Halloween night is a dangerous proposition.

Use the sidewalk – The sidewalk is the safest place for you and your trick or treaters so spend some time making sure they stay there. Coaching your kids before they go out really does make a difference.

Always supervise younger kids – The younger set should always be followed closely by a parent or guardian. There are too many dangers to trust a teenager or other child to do it.

Avoid masks when possible – Masks are great from Halloween parties and haunted houses, but not for trick or treating. They make your child even more clumsy than they are without one. Why not paint the face they want instead and allow them to see where they are going?

Slow down – The number one safety rule on Halloween night is to slow down. That goes for drivers, children and parents. We all need to take it easy, enjoy the night and get home safely. Slowing down will help us all to do that.

DIY Gift Wrap Box Tutorial – Present Made from Reynolds Wrap Box
Pin to Pinterest

Not only are they thrifty-but these boxes are a perfect size and shape for filling with Christmas goodies. Rescue your aluminum foil, and saran wrap boxes from the recycle bin and put them to work for you-creating a lovely and unique gift. A simple but thoughtful gift for a teacher, hair dresser, dog groomer, neighbor, as a hostess gift or put one in the mailbox to thank your faithful mail carrier. You can fill it with small cookies, candies, nuts, mints, clementines or it would even be a fun for a child filled with small toys. This would also make a great project to include your child in creating- use plain brown shipping wrap and let them color, stamp or place stickers to cover the box prior to wrapping.

Supplies Needed:

  • Aluminum or Plastic wrap box
  • wrapping paper
  • ribbon, raffia, or string
  • tissue paper
  • glue stick
  • scissors
  • 2 brads

Directions:

  1. Start by removing the blade from your box.
  2. Lay the box on wrapping paper, loosely wrap and cut the paper so that it is slightly- about 1” longer than box all around.
  3. Spread glue all over the top flap of the box.
  4. Press paper onto box, smoothing out all air bubbles- leaving excess paper inside the box that reaches into the “cavity” of the box, where your treats will go.
  5. Glue the next section of the box, and continue all the way around, pressing out the bubbles as you go.
  6. Glue the inside flap and again press the paper down.
  7. Fold the box ends inward, like you would a present, as in the photo-secure with glue.
  8. Use a hole punch to make a hole in the center of the top flap, and close to the bottom at the base of the box.
  9. Insert a brad and secure it by spreading the tines open.
  10. Place a layer of tissue paper in the bottom of the box.
  11. Fill box with desired filler.
  12. Tie ribbon or raffia to one brad to secure it, wrap around the other end several times to hold closed.
  13. Top with a bow and gift tag to complete your gift.

Sweet N’ Sassy Buffalo Wings Recipe – Football Gameday Appetizers

Gameday Sweet N’ Sassy Buffalo Wings Recipe
(Pin to Pinterest)

Day 2 of our Superbowl Party food series and here is a popular party standby- Buffalo Wings. Football parties generally mean appetizers, dips, chips, and other finger foods- its hard to serve a full sit down meal when noone is sitting down for all the shouting they are doing at the t.v. But buffalo wings are perfect for a one handed hold while waving your other at a bad call. These Sweet N Sassy Buffalo Wings will “fly” right off the serving platter, sweet with a spicy little kick. The combination of sugary sweetness and heat is so delicious they don’t even need a breading, we just cook these wings up naked. Add more hot sauce if you really like the heat! With just a few common ingredients needed and less than 30 minutes to prepare this is a great recipe. Whether you are hosting your own party or need something to bring to on-a dish like this is a perfect addition to gameday flavors! Serve next to traditional buffalo wings and dips.

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 bag of chicken wings, thawed
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 2/3 cup of brown sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. Hot Sauce
  • canola or vegetable oil

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl toss stick of butter, brown sugar and hot sauce. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a deep fryer or in a large pan on stove to 375°
  3. Carefully place wings in oil, there should be enough oil to just cover wings, be careful not to over crowd the pan so wings will cook evenly.
  4. Fry wings for 10-15 minutes, until they start to brown.
  5. Remove wings from oil, and lay on a plate lined with paper towel to drain for 1 minute.
  6. Place still hot wings in large bowl with butter, brown sugar, hot sauce mixture and toss well to coat completely. No need to even melt butter unless you wish, the hot wings will melt the butter as it coats.
  7. Repeat steps with all wings until done.
  8. Serve with ranch, or other creamy dip.

Helpful tip: Provide cups of toothpicks or plastic serving spears throughout your food table to make eating finger foods easier on your guests.
