Take a look at this homemade sand playdough on Frugal Coupon Living. We paired this kids craft with a fun pirate vignette for all the more fun. Aaarrgghh!

Pirate Homemade Sand Playdough

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh! It’s talk like a pirate day every day when you have this Homemade Sand Playdough. We had fun with this creative, crafty vignette. Create a fun pirate scene for hosting a party or just for an afternoon of play at home. This DIY project is much easier than you think using your every day pantry ingredients including water, vegetable oil, flour, salt and cream of tartar. We added some fun elements like decorative sand, gems (our loot), and pirate figures. Of course you could personalize this to any scene creating an under water adventure with mermaids, fish, and coral. We think this could be a fun scene for finding nemo. My girls wanted to use the leftover sand playdough for Barbie. Create a fun shoreline for Barbie to sit down and relax on her next beach getaway. If creating sensory play for for preschoolers, get some small dump trucks and go over giant mounds of sand! Whatever your style, you choose the scene, you choose the fun!

Pirate Homemade Sand Playdough

Supplies:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 cup decorative sand
  • Aquamarine gems
  • Pirate play figures and accessories

Directions:

  1. 1. Add the water and oil to a large sauce pan and stir to combine. Add the flour, salt and cream of tartar and whisk until all of the ingredients are wet and the flour lumps have disappeared.
  2.  Keep stirring over medium heat until a stiff ball of dough forms and you can no longer stir the dough easily (3-4 minutes). It will look like a ball of pizza dough.
  3. Immediately remove from the heat and place the warm playdough on a level workspace. Knead for 1-2 minutes or until soft and smooth.
  4. Flatten the kneaded playdough out on your workspace and sprinkle 1/4 cup of the craft sand on top. Knead the sand into the playdough and add another 1/4 cup of sand. Continue to work the sand into your playdough with your hands until its well mixed.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining sand on top and add a few aquamarine gems for water. This homemade sand playdough will give your kids hours of sensory and role playing fun! Add pirate figurines, trees, treasure chest, crocodile, etc…any kind of fun pirate accessories you may have. This is a great sensory activity!
  6. ENJOY!!

You can keep in an airtight plastic bag or container for up to three months. We think Tupperware works great!

Also take a look this fun up-cycled craft. A Upcycled Jelly Fish made from a recycled water bottle. Pin to Pinterest.

Six Awesome Ways to Do Water Play with Kids this Summer

We’re just a weeks into a long summer and you want to make sure you have plenty of ammo in your mommy arsenal to keep the kids busy! It’s a great time to be outdoors but oh so hot. Try some of these fun, and simple activities to keep kids cool and in the fresh air. With the exception of just a few items most of these supplies should be laying around your house or garage.

Bottle Sprinkler – Poke a clean 2 liter bottle with holes all around. Attach a male to male adapter that you can pick up at your local home improvement store for just a couple bucks. Connect your water hose. Drape the hose over a branch, turn on water. You now have now completed a homemade, recycled (pat yourself on the back here) and easy peasy project.

Ice-cavating – Use a butter tub, or other disposable small plastic container. Drop several of your child’s favorite plastic toys in, fill to 1” from top with water. (Speaking of toys, dinosaurs make a fun archeology dig.) Freeze overnite. A few minutes before you’re ready to go outside and begin pull container from freezer to allow ice block to loosen from the sides. Take ice block outside and lay it in the grass. Give your child spoons, a magnifying glass and a bucket of water with cups for pouring . Encourage your child to experiment with different techniques to melt the ice and free their toys. Older children can be given additional items such as salt, or a mallet. If using a mallet or sharper tools, please keep children closely monitored.

Sponge Balls – Cut standard kitchen sponges into 3 strips, alternating colors-stack the sponges, twist small rubber brand around the middle, then spread the sponges and fluff them out. Give each child a bucket of water for rewetting, and several sponge balls. Don’t forget to stand back!

Water Bag Piñata – Gather a 5 gallon plastic bag (garbage bags can be picked up at Dollar Tree), a rope, a bandana or other blindfold, a stick or broom handle. Fill plastic bag with 1-2 gallons of water, then tie a knot in bag. Tie the rope just below the knot. Blindfold your child, and have an adult drop rope and bag over a limb- you can either tie it so it remains stationary or tease challenge your child by raising and lowering the bag as they swing. It could be fun to fill with new small water toys you picked up at the dollar store.

Sand and Water Table – Make your own sand and water play tables by purchasing some inexpensive bins from Wal-Mart or the Dollar tree. Fill one with sand, and one with water. Provide your child with simple household items like; spoons, cups, sand toys, medicine droppers, funnels, colanders, etc. Besides just being plain old fun this will allow you to sneak in some learning- Measuring, mixing, bouancy, The Scientific Method (hypothesis) and fine motor skills through pouring, and scooping. Won’t you be the clever mama?

Squirt Gun Phonics – Here is another sneaky learning game, you can do this on your driveway, or the side of a wooden fence or shed. Draw random letters, numbers, words, or even shapes for the little ones. Ask your child to “shoot” the letters as you call them out or sound them out. This is also a great muscle building activity to help develop fine motor skills.

Have fun and don’t forget to let yourself get caught up in some of the water fun with your kiddo’s this summer. These sweet memories will linger in their minds long after the school bell rings.

Make Bathroom Cleaning Fun (Really!)

Make Bathroom Cleaning Fun (Really!)

With Grove Collaborative + Mrs. Meyers

It’s no secret that cleaning the bathroom isn’t my favorite task.

When I was little, my mom used to make up games to make it more fun. “Let’s see if you can get all these towels folded in two minutes. Go!” Then I’d rush to get everything done before the timer ran out.

Nowadays, no one claps and cheers when I finish folding towels or scrubbing the sink. But there’s no reason I can’t still make bathroom cleaning a little more enjoyable! Are you with me?

Start by grabbing this free Bathroom Basics Kit of Mrs. Meyers hand soap + lotion + tub & tile cleaner + Grove Collaborative walnut scrubber sponges from Grove Collaborative! Then come back here for my tips to make cleaning the bathroom a little more fun.

  1. Make it a game: Cleaning the bathroom always feels like it takes forever, but you’d be surprised how little time tasks actually take. I like to set a timer like my mom used to do and see how quickly I can complete each task. For example, it only takes one minute to wipe down the counters and sink — and makes a huge difference in how clean our bathroom feels. Who knew?
  2. Buy cleaners that smell fantastic: Nice smelling cleaners go a long way toward making the bathroom cleaning experience more pleasant. I actually look forward to using this Mrs. Meyer’s tub & tile cleaner — it cleans effortlessly and smells so fresh! I’m using the lemon verbena scent right now, but I’m looking forward to trying the lavender next time around. The best part is there are no harsh fumes, so I don’t have to hold my breath while I’m scrubbing the bathtub.
  3. Squeeze in a workout: We all know there aren’t enough hours in the day.So why not combine a few of tasks on your to-do list? Even though the bathroom is a small space, you can really work up a sweat. I like to see how many steps I get while carrying towels to the laundry room and taking out the trash. Plus, I do a few squats and lunges while I’m washing the floors and tub.
  4. Clean while you’re in the shower: I love hot showers and could spend all day in there. So while I’m enjoying the water, I give the shower walls and glass a quick scrub down to keep them shiny. It makes cleaning the bathroom a lot less painful (and is a pretty productive use of water!).  I stash my Mrs. Meyer’s tub & tile and Grove Collaborative scrubber sponge on the ledge in my shower as a reminder. The Grove sponges are perfect because the non-abrasive scouring side gets into the grout while the soft side gets the glass squeaky clean.
  5. Listen to an audiobook or podcast: This is my favorite way to clean and the best way to escape! Playlists are a great way to pump yourself up when you’re cleaning. But lately I’ve discovered that listening to audiobooks while I’m cleaning is a great way to catch up on reading that I wouldn’t otherwise have time for. I usually get so engrossed in my page-turner that the time flies by.
  6. Treat yourself: Beautiful soaps, hand lotion, or a bouquet of flowers are a nice reward for all your hard work. These Mrs. Meyer’s soaps and lotions are a super luxurious treat — no artificial scents here, just essential oils!

Bonus tip: Speaking of ways to make cleaning more fun, skip the grocery store and stock up on supplies from Grove Collaborative instead. Grove delivers the best natural household products from Seventh Generation, Method, Mrs. Meyer’s and more right to your door, on your schedule.

I used to hate running to the store for glass cleaner or toothpaste, but now I look forward to my monthly shipment from Grove. It feels like a present for me, but I’m actually helping my family stick to our budget! Grab your free kit and try Grove Collaborative now. You can read more about this FREEBIE here!
