Make your own LEGO Travel Case. This DIY LEGO craft has building block compatible tape and a tin pencil case. It’s a great travel with kids idea!

DIY LEGO Travel Case

DIY LEGO Travel Case

We live in the suburbs of DC. When we take road trips, it takes hours just to get outside the surrounding area of the district. For example, we recently took a trip to the Outer Banks which was supposed to be a  trip less than 5 hours. The car time took 9 hours! Talk about some creative ideas mom had to come up with the make her entire family of 5 happy. That was a trip without a single DVD too!

My number one tip when traveling with kids is making sure that you have snacks. Having well fed tummies makes everyone happy. Also, I find too much sugar in my kids equates to getting car sick, so I have water over a sugary drink. Beyond food and drinks, I have to gather creative crafts. this personalized LEGO bin came in handy when taking our last road trip. We sorta made a game out of it. My girls love the Food Network challenges where they are required to get five ingredients. I told the girls they could use 9 LEGOs to make something and then we compared our final creations and had a vote on who was the most creative.

For this DIY LEGO Case, we found this LEGO Compatible Tape to be best, but there are a lot of building block tape options on Amazon.  Since I am a last minute shopper, my Amazon Prime Membership allowed it to arrive in 2 days and I whipped up this craft really quick before our adventures!

What do you find necessary for the road when you travel with kids? Take a peak at our  Road Trip Hacks and Tips.

Supplies:

  • LEGO compatible tape
  • Metal/tin school box
  • Scissors
  • LEGOs or building blocks

DIY LEGO Travel Case Supplies

Directions:

  1. Open your tin school box and measure the top from side to side (only the flat surface, don’t worry about the edges).
  2. Now cut around seven pieces of Lego tape the same length (more if your box is larger).
  3. Carefully laid the tape down onto the flat metal/tin surface until all pieces are laid out.
  4. Once you have it in place, press firmly along each piece.
  5. Fill the other side with Legos, close the box and bring with you wherever you go.

Of course if you want a yummy sugar cookie recipe, we have one of those too! You will need some black Licorice Twizzlers Twists. If you have trouble finding those, we found some online. This will make the bristle of the brush and Air Heads will make your paint brush stick.

Artist Paint Palette Cupcakes

Ingredients:

  • 8 Sugar Cookies, prepared
  • 1 Container White Frosting

Artist Paint Palette Cookies In process

Directions:

  1. Take each orange and cherry Airheads candy and cut them in half. Cut each of the halves in half lengthwise so you now have 4 pieces of each flavor. Roll each piece into a paintbrush shape.
  2. Cut ½” pieces of the black licorice. Slice each one open so it isn’t a tube shape. Lay each piece out and cut them each in half. Lay one piece of licorice over the end of each paintbrush.
  3. Cut small thin rectangular pieces of the white Airheads candy. Wrap one of these around the seam where the licorice is laying on the paintbrush. Make sure you wrap them tight, so the paintbrush and licorice bristles don’t come apart.
  4. Divide the frosting into 5 small bowls and color each frosting bowl a different color. You can put each color frosting into a small plastic bag for piping if you choose to, or just use a knife to dollop.
  5. Cut out a small hole in the bottom half of each cookie so it looks like the hole on a paint board palette.
  6. Pipe a dot of each color frosting along the top half edge of each cookie.
  7. Use a dot of frosting to attach a paintbrush on top each cookie.
  8. These little paint palettes are cute and easy to make for any party!

Chalkboard Art and Hand Lettering Tutorials

Hand Lettering Tutorials

I happen to be stuck between Gen X and Millennials. That put me right between the transition from paper and pencil writing to the more recent heavy reliance on technology. So in school, I learned penmanship and handwriting, but after college I only rarely picked up a pencil or pen — my handwriting skills went out the window!

Everything went through email, Word, PowerPoint and every other form of technology possible. I feel like it’s reached a new level in recent years. In all honesty, I go days without picking up a pen, and I know I can’t be alone!

With all that being said, my handwriting is awful. I mean, it looks super juvenile. Maybe even worse.  Just like my fourth grade cursive class, I had to re-learn the talent of script and handwriting. In an effort to improve my general handwriting, I came across the art of hand lettering design — and fell in love!
