School will be starting soon, and it can bring nervousness for the little ones. Books are a great way to help calm those jitters. We found some fun books to read for the first day of school for your little ones!

Is your child starting school for the first time or going to a new school this year? First Day Jitters is the perfect book for them. This is the story of a girl starting over at a new school where she knows no one. She reluctantly goes, and is befriended by a teacher who helps her jittery transition go smoothly.

Have a little one going to preschool? You’ll want to read The Night Before Preschool the night before school starts. This book is geared toward smoothing kids’ fears about the first day of school. A little boy named Billy is so nervous he can’t fall asleep. The friends he makes the next day at school give him a reason not to sleep the next night, either, because he’s too excited about going back!

Is your kiddo going into Kindergarten? The Night Before Kindergarten is a must-have. Join the kids as they prepare for kindergarten, packing school supplies, posing for pictures, and the hardest part of all – saying goodbye to Mom and Dad. But, maybe it won’t be so hard once they discover just how much fun kindergarten really is!

The Night Before First Grade is a great book to ease the jitters of starting first grade. This book is about Penny, who is excited to be in the same classroom as her best friend. This humorous take on Clement C. Moore’s classic tale has a perfect twist ending that will surprise readers – as well as the “heroine” of the story – and help all about-to-be first-graders through their own back-to-school jitters.

Do you have a second grader? Second Grade, Here I Come! is a must-have book. This book of heartfelt, relatable, and silly poems bring to life the highlights of second grade – reading those big-kid books, trying out for the school play, and even dance breaks to wiggle “arms and legs and kaboodles. . . like a big bunch of second-grade noodles!”

Start the year off right by reading The School Year Will Be The BEST! On the first day of school, new classmates are asked to share what they would most like to happen in the upcoming year. Whether it’s looking good on picture day or skateboarding at school, everyone’s wishes are shown in humorously exaggerated illustrations. As the first day draws to a close, there can be no doubt – this school year will definitely be the best!

Do you find yourself in a school year rut? Have a great start to the back to school season with these lunch and snack prep essentials. Download a weekly school lunch planner, printable lunch notes, and a list of healthy lunchbox ideas for kids. Enjoy!

School Lunch Planner

If the end of last school year taught me anything, I taught me to plan our meals. Meats were out of stock, I was ordering groceries online and in order to not waste food or to have enough of what we like, I had to plan our meals. It is not that I didn’t plan before, but I was able to spread our food out and use it for the best purpose. I felt like a pioneer woman on a home school prairie.

I am taking that meal planning a step further as we head back to school with a weekly lunchbox planner. This will allow me to assign food to days before it goes bad, for me to pack non perishable food ahead and for me to use all the foods we have before opening something new.

School Meal Planning List

Included in our School Lunch Planner are…

  • Pantry Inventory List
  • Shopping List
  • Prepping List
  • Notes List

Each day is also listed Monday to Friday and includes what to pack for snacks and lunch.

Make some DIY giant dominoes for the family to play with. If you think that all you do with dominoes is stand them up and knock them down, think again! You can read the real rules of dominoes here, but there are so many ways to play with them. And if you DO want to line them up just to knock them down, go for it! | Lemon Thistle

Add this rainbow paver hopscotch game to your backyard to let the kids get some exercise whenever they’re feeling a little restless. You can color coordinate them with your outdoor space if you’d like, but the rainbow colors look so fun. | Happiness is Homemade

Have you ever heard of Kubb? It’s also called Viking Chess or Skulls and Femurs. Sounds pretty tough, right? The game is actually loads of fun once you learn how. Each game requires 2-6 players, and the game goes by quickly, so it’s easy to rotate people in and out if you have a crowd. | Our Handcrafted Life

This ring toss game is extremely portable, so it’s a good idea to take it with you wherever you’ll have a bunch of kids playing together outdoors. Again, this is a simple game that toddlers and preschoolers can play as well, so it’s perfect for all ages. It’s also pretty inexpensive to make. | Mom Endeavors

This DIY ladder golf game, or ladder ball, is easy to assemble or disassemble, making it a wonderful choice for camping trips with the family. The poles come apart and can be laid flat for easy transport and storage. Toss the bolas (the balls tied together) at the rungs of the ladder. Each rung is worth a certain number of points. In ladder toss, the first to 21 without going over wins! | Homemade Heather

If you’ve never played pick up sticks, you’re missing out! It’s an easy game, but it can be so much fun, especially when you’re playing with kids. The object of the game is for someone to drop the bundle of sticks, and then you take turns picking up one stick at a time without moving any others. It’s harder than it sounds. If you move any other sticks, your turn is over. | Delineate Your Dwelling

Get twisted up and tangled up in a game of backyard bubble wrap Twister. You can find large rolls or sheets of bubble wraps on Amazon or sometimes in the moving and packing supplies at your local home goods store. Use one of the large sheets to make a fun game of backyard twister. Use paper plates to trace the circles and color them in. It’ll be a hoot listening to the bubble wrap pop as you play. | Chica Circle

Don’t forget we have a fun shaving cream Backyard Twister Game in our Visual Summer Bucket List Ideas.

Nearly every Southerner has played horseshoes at least a time or two in his or her life. It really is entertaining when you play as pairs. You can easily build your own horseshoe pit in the yard to play this fun game yourselves. And yes, you do need a pit to stop the horseshoes. They’re quite heavy, and you don’t want them flailing along the ground very far! Turn your own backyard into a game pit to paly time and time again. | Creatively Southern

For another cheap and fun game to play with a group of kids, this bowl bean bag toss is perfect. This reminds me of the Grand Prize Game on the Bozo the Clown show. What fun! | One More Moore

Of course competitive games, always need a winner. Declare a winner or victory amoung the opponents with some of these fun trophies or MVP medals. What’s your favorite outdoor game?
